Florida elections since 1990
Popular vote percentage:
Total votes (millions):
President George H.W. Bush won Florida in 1992, though this was almost certainly because of Ross Perot who did best in the Democratic counties of Pinellas, Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade. Had he not run, Bill Clinton probably would have won Florida as he did in 1996 and as Al Gore probably did in 2000 (see below)
By all rights the 2000 presidential election was too close to call; it was within a fraction of a percent, just a couple hundred votes. A statewide recount after the fact revealed that Al Gore would have won, but the partial recount in November and December 2000 was illegally stopped by George W. Bush's brother Jeb (who happened to be governor), and the 5-4 conservative majority Supreme Court decided not to start it up again because it was too close to the constitutional deadline by which votes are supposed to be counted. "There isn't enough time to recount now that we've wasted all this time not recounting. Sorry, better luck next time."
The 2010 Senate election was a three-way race between a Republican, an Independent, and a Democrat in distant third. This was because of Charlie Crist; he was elected governor as a Republican in 2006, but became an independent midway through and chose not to run for re-election in 2010, instead running for senate as a third party, splitting the Democratic vote and ensuring the election of Republican Marco Rubio. Crist then became a Democrat and challenged incumbent governor Rick Scott (the bald bastard) in 2014, losing by a nose. He then ran for the House, in which he serves to this day, but Republicans have targeted him personally and are erasing his district in the next election; rather than run in a new district and lose, he has chosen to "save face" and run for governor yet again as a Democrat. It's Crist's fault we got stuck with Rubio in 2010, so I have no doubt he'll screw us over and give us at least two more years of DeSantis; I say two years and not four because I am sure he'll win, but then he'll run for president in 2024 (or VP if Trump chooses to run). I have no doubt Joe Biden will win the popular vote in 2024 (Democrats have won 7 of the last 8 times, including the last 4 in a row), but given Republican fuckery in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, I have serious doubts about the electoral college.
DeSantis was elected in 2018 after running on a platform of anti-intellectualism, literally running as "I'm dumber than my opponent! He thinks he's smarter than you, but I know I'm not!" And in a post-Trump era, this worked surprisingly well (though he was helped by the fact that Republicans stopped counting votes in three predominantly Democratic counties; Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach. Sound familiar? If you pay attention to Florida politics, these counties come up A LOT. Oh, and poll watchers discovered boxes full of uncounted votes in December, but no lawsuits ever came up because the Democrats were broke, and moreover they didn't want to look like they were rejecting the results; no, that's the Republicans' job; Democrats have to lose with grace while Republicans never accept defeat). Andrew Gillum came closer than any other Democrat this century, but 2022 is looking to be a VERY bad year for Democrats regardless of who they pick
They're also passing strict anti-voting laws; they won in 2020, but for the first time in years the Democrats sent in more mail-ballots than the Republicans, so they've decided that was too close for comfort and are making it harder to vote by mail. They are also closing polling places, shortening hours, and getting rid of drop boxes to discourage voting; low turnout helps Republicans
It's a midterm year with the Democrats in the majority; historically the majority party loses seats in the midterms, and the Democrats are on a knife's edge as is
Compounding this last fact, we just had a census, so 2022 is a redistricting year; Republicans control the legislature and get to redraw all the maps, so the House is gonna become an even deeper red stronghold with no legal recourse because the conservative Supreme Court said that while partisan gerrymandering is unconstitutional, it is also unjusticiable, meaning that while it's illegal, the courts can't enforce it, only Congress can. When half of Congress benefits from gerrymandering, there's no way in hell you'll get two-thirds of them to limit their own power and influence.
It's a shitshow within a clusterfuck
Rubio and DeSantis will almost certainly be re-elected. Absolute best case scenario the House goes from 16-11 to 17-11 after Florida gains a seat, but more likely it will go 20-8 or 21-7. They're targeting Charlie Crist's seat for sure, as well as two others, so realistically I predict 19-9, though a handful will be swing districts, so the actual makeup of the House will vary over the next ten years as party strength ebbs and flows.
2008 was a good year for Democrats, 2010 and 2014 were great years for Republicans; who knows what the future holds?
