ok i hate those ambiguous math notation ragebait posts so so much. however. it's worse when the notation is not ambiguous and someone is insisting that it is
#numbers do not lie#<- they do sometimes but thats my math tag lol#anyway. not even TOUCHING the post i dont want to subject everyone to it#and like. disclaimer that notation can vary. and that im being pretentious about this. BUT#you know the multiplication notation with parentheses where you have a thing sort of attached to outside of the parentheses?#like 5(x+3). that's called implicit multiplication#it's clear in that notation that the 5 and the (x+3) are like. together. that is One Thing. it's just split up into factors#8 [division sign] 2(2+2) is NOT ambiguous notation specifically BECAUSE of the implicit multiplication#it takes priority over the division sign. that 2 and that (2+2) are glued together#and so the 8 is divided by both of them. they go TOGETHER on the denominator#it would be ambiguous if they had used a multiplication sign instead of implicit multiplication#this is WHY people use implicit multiplication!#well also because mathematicians are lazy and always want to use as few symbols as possible lol#idk i dont have words to explain this more formally but math makes so much more sense when you forget order of operations#and just think of the numbers as things attached together in various ways#not things you are Doing Something To in a specific order#makes the grammar of it much easier to grasp imo#math is about relationships a lot more than it's about sequences of steps
