I love this revisit of season 7 Gallavich, because I love those episodes. They are absolutely the comfort episodes I'm most likely to put on if I just want to watch some Gallavich (and then bonus Monica chaos, with Lip falling apart in the corner.) But when I see this sort of literal celebration of the season and those precious two episodes, I always think of the people who watched that shit LIVE. And they were not celebrating.
Context is everything. When you know how the story ends, and you know that isn't the ending, and you know you can just fully skip season 8 on your rewatch, 7x10 and 7x11 are really lovely, bittersweet, emotionally cathartic episodes.
I try to keep this in mind in fandom -- though to make it silly, maybe I can also keep this in mind in life -- that sometimes all you need is a little time and a different perspective, and it's not that bad. It might even be pretty good.
#or literally turn into a comfort episode#I love these episodes so much my brain can't totally comprehend not loving them#but I always knew Mickey came back when I was watching#so I never got that awful kick to the stomach#I tell myself#I would have been livid is that was the way they ended it#particularly if the whole show had ended at 7x12#and there was no real reason to send Mickey away#but while I have no doubt this is true my heart is never in it#because I love everything these episodes give so much#the bleachers and the dock and the van#and Ian giving Mickey all his money#the two of them just ditching Damon in a parking lot#Mickey's disdain for Kind bars#so much going on#shameless 7x11#7x11 celebration#gallavich

every October 12th I think about how we’re supposed to believe that the team would have forgotten Reid’s birthday in 7x11 when it is also literally Emily’s
like, the implication is either that they celebrated Emily and didn’t remember she and Reid are bday buddies; or that even after Emily reminded the team of Reid's bday and organized his belated bday celebration in the conference room, no one remembered that they’d also missed hers
considering the latter option makes me particularly emo since Reid's 30th would also have been Emily‘s first birthday after having come back from the dead in March
yes realistically I understand this is just another example of continuity errors on the show
but still

M*A*S*H - Viewguide, S7
Are you interested in the long-running anti-war situation tragicomedy M*A*S*H (1972-1983), but there are simply so many asterisks and so many episodes?
Well I can’t help you with the asterisks, but nor can I help myself: I started watching all 11 seasons of M*A*S*H, and bringing back for you my viewing selections, chosen for The Qualities.
— — —
Season 7! An exceedingly sweet one, I'd say. Not as throw-back rambunctious as the previous season, but just real cutie.
Am also really getting the sensation at this point that our moorings have become entirely loosened from time. We're just, floating, slowly revolving in place, the only indication of the outside years the silvering of Alan Alda’s hair. In the fourth episode of this season it’s stated to be October, 1952, and then seven episodes after that it’s September, 1951. Later we celebrate the one year anniversary of the Officer's Club we built five seasons ago and also next year. When are we? We're in M*A*S*H.
Oh and BJ has a mustache now.
Gee-whiskers.
M*A*S*H - Season 7 Recommended sequence
7x03 ‘Lil’ - A very fun older lady colonel comes to the 4077th and bonds with Sherman, but the real ticket is that Hawkeye realizes he truly does not know what the “BJ” stands for, and I realize that Radar is HR. Weeping, why is that…so funny…. The standard level is noticeably lower ever since we entered Season 4, for sure, but that's also why we privilege this one for being the flirtiest, gayest episode this season by a mile, including even Margaret and Lil herself.
7x07 ‘None Like It Hot’ - They Were All So HOT, and the boys order a camping tub from Abercrombie & Fitch. Everyone wants in. You want in. Get in here.
7x11 ‘Point of View’ - Brand-new experimental swing for M*A*S*H, and I’M LIVING. For this whole episode, we’re only seeing what a soldier is seeing. They’ve just set up a camera guy on a cot, and we watch our characters coming in and out of his frame of sight, talking to him, talking to each other at a distance, occasionally just being observed without their knowing. It’s again doing part of what S4’s ‘The Interview’ does, but organically: showing these people we know so well from an outside perspective. It’s incredibly revealing. I was in love with it. Episodic television!!
7x14 ‘An Eye for a Tooth’ - Margaret is in adorable high spirits as her divorce from Donald gets ever closer, and in her charming joie de vivre gets roped into an escalating prank war with her hungover besties Hawkeye and BJ, and the surprise scamp of the hour: Charles, chaos vampire.
7x10 ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ - When I saw this title I just chuckled “Bring me it,” like a king gesturing to a plate of figs. And They Were ALL SO COLD. Blanket cloaks, a ~stunning~ new Winchester parka, everyone with their shoulders hunched up going “Hhha!”, and a couple wonderfully strange and macabre plot points in the cold night that I don’t know, just perfectly deliver a type of atmosphere that enchants me.
7x13 ‘Out of Gas’ - They’re still All So Cold, getting lightheaded from being stuck using ether in the O.R., and Father Mulcahy is on the black market again: rules.
7x20 ‘Hot Lips Is Back In Town’ - Do not let the title mislead you, this is an episode about Major Margaret Houlihan, hilarious, gung-ho, magnificent, being single and ready to revolutionize triage.
7x21 ‘C*A*V*E’ - Now for some reason this title just absolutely sends me. I can't even figure out how I'm pronouncing it in my head except that maybe it's sort of like Tim Curry saying “SpaACE!” Anyway this episode fucks, they evacuate everyone to a cave amid shelling and Hawkeye, rolling his weight from foot to foot at the entrance while his body tries to suffocate him, is like, so, time to reveal I have severe claustrophobia? Hell yeah it is.
7x22 ‘Rally Round the Flagg, Boys’ - Flagg returns, popping out in literal jump scares to people’s literal shouts, truly great, and that’s even before we get to see what happens when you toss him at Charles Emerson Winchester, encountering him for the first time. Sherm directed this one :)
7x23 ‘Preventative Medicine’ - In this season's only dark ep, but oh baby, Hawkeye, with an eerie, damned air, sets out to commit medical malpractice. Run don’t walk: to the trolley problem episode. Run. Don’t. Walk.
7x25 ‘Ain’t Love Grand’ - In this episode, Klinger addresses the fact that he’s wearing a Class A uniform by grinning that he has “a little rendezvous later and we promised each other to dress in something kinky,” and I about lost my glass. Also, Mike Farrell, director of this one, uses his first outing to announce that he conceives of Hawkeye as this cute terrible gremlin who lives to torment him in...ways.
7x26 ‘The Party’ - Sunshiny social engineer BJ Hunnicutt gets it in his tall head that their loved ones should have a party together back in the states, for the connection and comfort that will bring both them and the 4077th. This one had me, as the books say, blubbering. So dear & sweet I could expire !
And that's your set. For the die-hards, full season-long notes as usual coming soon.
Season 1 • Season 2 • Season 3 • Season 4 • Season 5 • Season 6 • Season 7 • To be continued

Riverdale, Ep.7x11 - Halloween 2 (spoilers)
With only 9 episodes left, the series finally, finally starts to deal with the main storyline. Maybe. I honestly don't even know anymore.
It's almost Halloween, which is apparently Veronica's favorite time of the year. And so she decides to go to school dressed as a witch. Not just a witch, a sexy witch. Yeah, that costume wouldn't fly in schools today, let alone in 1950. Also, it's not even Halloween when she does it, so why is she shocked people are staring? Anyway, apparently Riverdale doesn't celebrate Halloween anymore. Well, children do, but teenagers can't because a few years ago two River Vixens and two Bulldogs died in a crash when they were acting foolishly that night.
Veronica decides to host a special Halloween event at the theater. She invites everyone to come, but Jughead, Reggie, Betty, and Archie won't be there because of their own storylines. Alice gets wind of Veronica's event and, well, threatens her in Alice's own special way.
Toni wants Cheryl to go, but Cheryl can't as she always hosts a slumb....ah, skip it. Cheryl has someone else hold the party and she sneaks out. They, along with Kevin, Clay, and Veronica do a rendition of songs from Rocky Horror that somehow simultaneously does and does not get the point of Rocky Horror (yeah, I don't get how that managed that either.). Alice sneaks in and see all the naughty things going on. This will be a problem in the future (or they'll forget it next episode. Who knows anymore). At the end of the episode, Clay and Kevin confront Veronica on why she's sleeping at the theater. She tells them everything is fine.
Also, Cheryl, Toni, Fangs, and Midge go to Pop's where they decide to loudly talk about everything they don't want the people of Riverdale to know. Of course, Evalyn (oh, you're back again. Again.) just happens to hear everything.
Meanwhile, Betty is trying to figure out if she's into Reggie or Archie. As Reggie has never had a true Halloween before, she suggests she and Archie take him trick or treating, to a cemetery, and to...neck in a haunted house. So, Archie and Reggie put two and two together and realize Betty might be into both of them. And they agree if Betty seems to be interested in one of them more then the other, the other should bow out. So, they go trick or treating, they go to the cemetery (where it becomes obvious to Reggie that he should bow out), and then they go to the haunted house....oh look, it's Ethel's home. (Really, Jughead is the only one who gives two fucks about Ethel in this series).
Reggie bows out and starts to go home. Only to be picked up by Jason, who has been constantly driving around with other Bulldogs causing mayhem. Meanwhile, Betty and Archie are still at Ethel's home about to maybe have sexy times, when Betty sees the Milkman. Archie and Betty run away and go to her house. They're about to kiss when they are stopped by the second most horrible thing in Riverdale; Alice.
Archie is woken up in the middle of the night. Seems like Jason's car went off a bridge and there are players hurt.
Finally, Jughead is trying to convince everyone there's a Milkman who's a killer. Uh, this is why he needs a Betty type partner. Someone needs to reign him in before he starts, oh say, slapping milk cartons out of people's hands. Later, he talks to Ethel (oh, she's still here. Nice.). This convinces Ethel to escape The Sisters. Of course, she can't stay with Jughead as she'll easily be found. So naturally he suggests Radberry's apartment as it's paid for for the rest of the year (and surely the Landlord won't stop by). Jughead and Ethel try to solve the murder of her parents by going to the Pep Comics Halloween party to try and find the author of the original Milkman story. They are unsuccessful. Well one author is mentioned (I will NOT dignify this, Riverdale, with naming him), but he apparently killed himself saying he'll never write anything as good as that story. Jughead takes Ethel back to the apartment. Ethel goes inside and we see the milkman. Jughead walks down the hall but is stopped by Ms. Machina again, who lets him know about the milkman. Jughead bursts into the apartment to see the milkman dead and Ethel standing over his body with a bloody knife. (Also, quietist death ever. Those walls are clearly paper thin and yet nobody hears a thing).
