Everyone is developing their year-end lists, debating and hemming and hawing and trying to handle Beyoncé dropping her new album after already releasing their lists. I'm not going to try to come up with any such rankings. There is too much music for me to try to rank this over that. Instead, I was thinking I would just write up a post about a song that came out this year that most people probably haven't heard.
I've listened to this a lot since it was released last May. Cato is half of Groove Armada, and his album Times and Places evolved from all of the down time he experienced while touring the world for the last decade or so (there are some recordings out there of him playing this song on tour, but it had never been officially released). This is the final track on the album, and it has that feel of walking home in the pre-dawn light after clubbing, dancing, and blurring memories. It's very much in the Ambient/Chill vein, the kind of song I'd hear in college when I was out at the big clubs and sat in an upstairs lounge to get away from the sweaty bodies and thumping bass of the main dance floor. Lots of times this past summer, I'd put the song on repeat while doing this and that, and it cycled through itself while I barely noticed when it would end or begin again. I'm not saying this is the best song of the year, but it's one I'll always associate with 2013.
