Ooooooh, well, I'd say that really depends on what you're going for!

I'm lucky enough to have enough disposable income that I own a PS5, Switch, and Xbox One S

When I started getting back into gaming in 2016 after a 2 year break, I went with Playstation because their library of exclusives spoke to me. I wanted to get Uncharted because Naughty Dog made my favorite game series, Jak and Daxter on the PS2, and Uncharted was the only thing I felt I had missed by getting a 360. Pretty much all PS4 games are backwards compatible on PS5 (less than 10 won't work but I guarantee they're not things you'll miss). Uncharted, the Last Guardian, Until Dawn, Journey, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, the Last of Us Remastered, the Last of Us 2... there's way more, and ones I have yet to play (God of War), and then there's some I've enjoyed on PS5 like Miles Morales, Bugsnax, Astro's Playroom, new Ratchet coming up. I love the controller so much: they give it a haptic feedback that makes it so you can feel raindrops, or moving across sand, or ice, etc. The downside to the PS5 is that it's $500, hard to find due to a chip shortage, and there have only been a handful of games so far only available on PS5 and not on PS4. If you're on the fence, maybe try finding a cheap PS4 to play some games. Another small factor was that a lot of my friends were getting PS4s and encouraging me to get one. I don't play as many multiplayer games as I did back in the 360 days, so that was not as big of a factor for me. But it might be for you

The Switch is also so good. They are porting more and more games from their old library so it's really becoming a hub to play some gems you've missed. I'm somewhat hopeful they're going to bring Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and Twilight Princess to the Switch... it's funny, I've always considered Nintendo products to be the "Pokemon machine" but they haven't been my favorite experiences on the Switch. I enjoyed Pokemon Let's Go, and I really liked Sword and Shield, though I think it was one of the weakest entries in the series. But I love Breath of the Wild (first Zelda game I've ever beat, special experience), Hades, Gris, and Monster Hunter Rise so much. So tldr on the Switch: it's great for Nintendo exclusives, indies, playing in bed, and on the go. It's also probably the least expensive of all entries, if you go for the latest on each. The games don't tend to go on sale as much, though. A lot of the great Playstation games can be picked up for $10-$15, whereas a great sale for Mario Kart 8, a game that is technically 7 years old because it came out on the WiiU, is $30 and that's a blue moon price. People will say the games don't go on sale, but that's not true, they just don't go on sale as often and not for as much. Another downside is that their online multiplayer services really suck. They don't officially have a voice chat (but I have learned they do have it available for Fortnite, so the damned thing is capable of it), so you have to use something else to talk. A lot of their online service games have some lag, but they did recently update it from what was basically a ~17 year old service. Monster Hunter Rise multiplayer is phenomenal, so maybe that will change

Then there's Xbox. At some point in a few years, I'll probably get an Xbox Series X. I love what they're doing with backwards compatibility, and they're really pro-consumer right now because they fumbled the Xbone generation so badly. I have not yet jumped on Game Pass, but I think I will soon. Game Pass is basically Netflix for games. After your $1 month trial, it's about $12/month, and you get access to hundreds of games with tons being added all the time. It's really great for a budget gamer. I can't speak much to their lineup of exclusives... Halo and Gears of War have never been my bag. They've got State of Decay, which is a flawed but fun zombie game, the Ori games which are phenomenally beautiful (but also on Switch), and Sea of Thieves, a very chaotic but fun pirate game. Not the heaviest of hitters, but they're probably going to have more exclusive games in the next few years since they've bought a ton of studios

Even the Xbox stands out with the Halo 5, Horizin 3 and Gears of war 4. Most of the sports titles are for each of these consoles. The healthier fighting experience is offered by the PS4 with the street fighter V, the Revelator 2, Guilty Gear and the King of fighters XIV. Sony and Microsoft have been at war since the beginning of consoles and provide you with premium quality designs with each new gen console. The Xbox One S and the PS4 slim are equally sleek and offer attractive and impressive design to make it portable and match the gaming setup. The PS4 offers sheer smallness that provides it an edge but it lacks gaming headsets optical input. The Ps4 pro from Sony is fully 4K ready and has a much chunkier and hamburger shaped design but surprisingly the Xbox One X from Microsoft is slimmer than their Xbox S even though it offers much more power.

The advantage of the PS4 controller is that it is the only one that supports charging through micro USB. The Xbox controller depends on the AA batteries with an alternate charging kit that needs to be purchased separately of $25.

The PS4 has widened the gap due to the $299 PlayStation VR. PS4 is the only console that offers VR support and is fully optimised for that. Till now there is no announcement regarding VR from Microsoft.

Both consoles run games smoothly and with great graphic quality but the PS4 leads in terms of resolution as mainstream AAA titles run on full 1080p on the play station while the Xbox shrinks the pixels to 900p. So if your priority is the resolution and pixel density then the PS4 is your best option. But this is only the case in basic models of the products. When we see the premium versions of the consoles, the Xbox one X provides you with 4K resolution and most powerful hardware in any console made till date. The PS4 Pro theoretically plays 4K but it just rescales your game to 4K rather than the true quality. So if you want to experience true 4K quality then the Xbox is your way to go.

If you own a HDR ready TV then you would not want to settle for something that will not match to the picture quality of your TV. Cheat codes may not be as prominent in video games as they once were, but there was a time when entire magazines, TV shows, and websites were dedicated to sharing these commands, codes, and tactics that would change the way you played your favorite games.

The thing about cheat codes is that they’re rarely just about the “cheat.” Yes, there’s a certain joy to becoming invincible, unlocking new items, or just skipping a few levels, but the thing that separates the best cheat codes from an endless selection of similar cheats is the way they would often go on to define the games they were in to such a degree that it almost feels stranger to think of playing those games without cheats enabled.

From tanks that appear out of thin air to secrets that made you the most popular kid in the neighborhood, these are the absolute best cheats in video game history.

15. Grand Theft Auto 3 – Spawn a Rhino Tank

The Grand Theft Auto series belongs in the Hall of Fame of video game cheat codes, but if I have to pick one cheat from this series to highlight, it has to be the “tank” code from GTA 3.

By entering CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE, R1, L2, L1, TRIANGLE, CIRCLE, TRIANGLE (in the PS2 version of the game), GTA 3 players could spawn an invincible Rhino tank that could destroy any other vehicle with one cannon shot. It was the cheat you relied on when you were about to quit playing or were feeling especially frustrated/destructive. Sure, it sometimes broke the game and slowed the framerate to a crawl, but those drawbacks honestly just highlight how insane and delightful this cheat was.

Long before Fortnite let John Wick shoot Superman, NBA Jam was the undisputed king of bizarre character cameos that led to truly wild competitive matchups.

Depending on which version of the game you were playing, NBA Jam let you take the court as Bill Clinton, Reptile, Warren Moon, “Air Dog,” Prince Charles, Will Smith, and so many more truly bizarre characters that we used to impress our friends before we refused to tell them the cheat code we used to unlock them.

13. Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast – Dismemberment Debug Code

For years, Star Wars fans asked the question, “Wait, wouldn’t a lightsaber just instantly cut through anyone it touched?” While most of us knew the reasons that we never got to see that effect in the movies, many of us secretly hoped that we would one day get to see what a lightsaber could really do.

That day came the first time you realized that Jedi Outcast contained one of the best cheat codes ever. By opening this PC classic’s debug menu and using the “helpusobi 1” code, Jedi Outcast players could unlock the “realistic” lightsaber combat option that allowed you to chop off enemy limbs and heads or even just give them the old Darth Maul special.

12. Metroid – The Mysterious Justin Bailey Code

While Metroid’s “Justin Bailey” password/cheat code is certainly memorable for what it unlocks (Samus’ bodysuit design and a collection of gear, weapons, and items), the enduring legacy of this code is its mysterious origins and the many myths it inspired.

For years, fans argued about the meaning and origin of “Justin Bailey.” Some speculated that Justin Bailey was the name of a Metroid developer (or their child) or that it refers to Samus being “just in” her bathing suit. Years later, though, we learned that it’s actually kind of a coincidence that this specific password works at all and that it may have been discovered by someone named Justin who entered their own name and found something incredible.

The battle against elderly sniper “The End” in Metal Gear Solid 3 is arguably one of the franchise’s best boss fights, but if you just don’t have the time for all that, it is possible to skip this fight entirely. You just needed to set your PS2’s internal clock a couple of years into the future before starting this encounter. If done correctly, you’ll trigger a special cutscene that shows The End has died of old age and makes you feel bad about your tactics.

8. Age of Empires 2 – The Shelby Cobra Cheat

Age of Empires 2 features so many memorable cheats that you could honestly argue they helped define the legacy of this classic RTS. However, there is one cheat code that stands above the rest.

By using the cheat command “how do you turn this on,” you can spawn a Shelby Cobra in AoE 2 that happens to function as one of the better siege weapons in the game. Nothing beats turning this strategy game into a Fury Road simulator by assaulting a desert stronghold with a small army of sports cars.

Actually, the only thing more memorable than playing as Akuma was actually managing to input this cheat code correctly. The series of steps required to unlock Akuma is so precise that it’s honestly harder to pull off than most combos in other fighting games. In fact, this cheat code (which required you to navigate the character select screen in a very specific way) was so tough to properly input that even some of those who knew the method suspected it was fake.

The only thing better than cheats that break a game are cheats that break a game and present an entirely new way to experience it in the process.

It’s impressive enough that Nintendo managed to pack this much content into an NES cartridge, but the best thing about this cheat is how easy it was to unlock it. More than a few kids accidentally played the Second Quest by assuming that their character was supposed to be named Zelda.

4. Doom – The “God Mode” Cheat

Doom’s invincibility cheat command (IDDQD) deserves some love for becoming a video game meme before memes were really a thing, but what stands out to me all these years later is how this code kind of changed the conversation about Doom for many.

As the first first-person shooter many of us played when we were young, Doom could be incredibly intimidating in terms of its mechanics, concept, difficulty, and even tone. However, when someone put in this code and made you invincible, it really made it easier to appreciate just what a joy this classic was and how that whole FPS thing was probably going to stick around for a while.

3. The Konami Code – Gradius

It’s the code you knew was going to be on the list the moment you saw it, but the slight twist here is that I’m specifically highlighting the use of the Konami code in Gradius: the game that started the most famous cheat code in video game history.

The story goes that Kazuhisa Hashimoto was working on the NES port of Gradius but found it difficult to properly test the game due to how punishing it was. His solution was to create a cheat command that would give him the power-ups he needed to progress. The game was accidentally shipped with the cheat code still enabled, players discovered it, and the rest is history. There’s just something great about a “work smarter, not harder” game developer/tester pretty much pioneering video game cheat codes as we know them today.

2. Mortal Kombat (Sega Genesis) – The Blood Code

Early arguments between Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo fans usually ended in a standstill. Gamers on both sides typically refused to concede any ground to their “rivals” in the debate over who owned the better video game console.

It feels like it’s been years since we saw a mobile phone handset hit the market that looked dramatically different from its competitors. Ever since Apple came up with the basic shape of the iPhone years ago, manufacturers have been in agreement that the brick-shaped touchscreen design is what consumers want and need. Since then, aside from the manufacturer’s logo and the operating software, mobile phones have largely been interchangeable. That’s why it’s such a delight to see an innovative device like the Black Shark 2 Pro phone, which looks like nothing else on the market. It has a striking appearance, but it markets itself as a gaming phone. What is a gaming phone, though, and do you need one?

If you engage with games on your phone the same way the majority of people do, the answer is ‘probably not.’ As far as you’re concerned, your phone has access to an app store that allows you to download any game you wish, and you can play them hassle-free as much as you like. You might occasionally encounter performance issues if your phone is low on memory or space or is getting a little old, but most of the time, everything works exactly as it should. The concept of a gaming phone isn’t new. 2017 saw the launch of the Razer Phone, a gaming-orientated device that came with a high refresh rate and a processor that wouldn’t have been out of place in a PlayStation or an Xbox. It didn’t catch on as an idea, but as a piece of equipment, it showed what was possible. The design of the Razer influenced the 7 Pro and the Google Pixel 4 when it came to screen design and refresh rate, and may even have influenced the creation of the new 120Hz displays that have become a favorite of Samsung.

The Black Shark hopes to eclipse the competition with a further step up in gaming-friendly technology, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 plus processor to speed things along. That will mean that graphics run 15% faster on the new phone than on anything else on the market, and a CPU speed of up to 2.96HGz becomes possible. The idea of having a fan inside the machine to keep the processor cool is being thrown out as an old hat, too – instead, the phone comes equipped with a liquid cooling system designed to keep the device at peak performance at all times. Most of us are used to the feeling of our phones running hot when we’re asking for a lot from them in terms of performance. Black Shark 2 Pro owners should never encounter that sensation, even after hours of gameplay.

There are a few more features to the phone that are also worthy of mention. As an example, the sensitivity of the touch screen can be adjusted from one game to the next, and can even be made lighter on one side of the screen than it is on another. A Sharkspace slider button enables a ‘gaming mode’ on your phone that works like a gaming-optimized airplane mode, ensuring you never get interrupted mid-game, and background processes are kept to an absolute minimum. Factor in the fact that it comes with a case that effectively turns it into a gaming controller with a screen, and you have a powerful proposition for gaming-orientated phone owners.

The one thing we don’t know about the phone yet is when it will be available in the USA or Europe. News of the phone was first announced in July 2019 with a suggestion that it would be available to buy in time for Christmas, but it didn’t materialize. Now, aside from assuring interested parties that it will definitely be launching at some point in 2020, manufacturers Xiaomi is unable to give a precise launch date. They can, however, give us some indication of the price. A brand new Black Shark 2 Pro comes with a recommended retail price of $599 for a basic model, with tweaked models available for higher rates. When compared to the cost of a brand new iPhone, the price seems reasonable.

The Black Shark 2 Pro appears to have all the right attributes to make it a success. It’s fast, it’s good-looking, it packs some serious power, and it’s cheaper than the vast majority of modern top-end smartphones. The only question is whether there’s a large enough market to support it, or whether it will meet with the same tepid reaction that greeted the Razer Phone when that hit the market three years ago. Are there enough phone-centric gamers to reward Xiaomi for their efforts? We don’t know, but we’re about to find out.

Because developers don’t typically share the full details of their matchmaking algorithms (likely to try to ward off copycats and exploiters), we can only really guess what constitutes “skill” to a formula. For instance, it’s strongly suspected that Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War’s SBMM system accounts for a player’s “Kill/Death Ratio” as well as other intangibles such as killstreaks and total time played in order to match each player with other participants whose own stats and performance metrics are relatively similar.

Why Do People Like Skill-Based Matchmaking?

While the full answer to this question is really based on personal preference, these are a few things that most fans of SBMM systems will probably tell you:

First off, the idea behind most SBMM systems is solid. If you could perfectly match players based on their actual skill levels against each other at all times, you could eliminate frustrating balance issues caused by more general matchmaking systems. Furthermore, you could help ensure that every multiplayer match offered the kind of competitive experience that they were designed to deliver. Granted, there is no such thing as an SBMM system that is perfect at all times, but even imperfect applications of these systems help eliminate some of the more obvious instances of unfair matchmaking.

SBMM is especially important to fairly casual (or “the average”) players of multiplayer games. Imagine coming home, playing the two Call of Duty multiplayer matches you’ll get to squeeze in that night, and being matched against pro or top tier amateur players. While your mileage may vary, you’ll most likely end your game night feeling like you barely had the chance to enjoy the matches you played.

Maybe that’s an extreme example of the problem, but the basic benefits of SBMM remain the same: to ensure a more balanced competitive experience for players of all skill levels. It’s also been suggested that SBMM games tend to have better player retention rates, which could be one of the driving metrics that inspire companies to implement such systems in the first place.

Why Do People Hate Skill-Based Matchmaking?

There are a few potential problems with SBMM, but its most vocal critics tend to be streamers, pro players, and others who spend quite a bit of time playing a particular competitive multiplayer game.

Their main complaint is that SBMM systems aren’t really designed with them in mind. The issue, they say, is that high-level players being grouped with high-level players at all times makes it almost impossible to just sit down and enjoy a game casually. Some claim that even players who are not pros are being treated like professional participants by SBMM systems. As such, they’re constantly having to play at the top of their game against other high-level players.

Other logistical issues impact the benefits of SBMM for high-level players. For instance, some games make it difficult (or impossible) for high-level players to group with their low-level friends in SBMM titles, while most SBMM game also make high-level players wait longer to find a lobby which accommodates their “needs.” It’s also been pointed out that cheaters are more likely to find their way into high-level SBMM lobbies unless they intentionally tank their stats (or kill themselves during matches) to ensure they’re matched with low-level players.

To be fair, critics of SBMM aren’t limited to pros and other players who devote more hours to a particular game. Some contend that even more casual players will eventually reach a skill ceiling where they too will be matched incorrectly with other players based more on perceived skill level instead of preference. To put it another way, SBMM works under the assumption that you want to play a highly-contested game at all times. For some, that’s simply not the case.

There are some possible workarounds for that issue, but before we dive into them, we should really talk about what truly makes SBMM such a controversial concept: the culture of competitive multiplayer games, especially the culture of Call of Duty.

How Did Call of Duty’s SBMM System Divide the Community?

At this point, you may be asking, “So, are really good multiplayer gamers just upset that they’re not getting matched against lesser players?” There’s a degree to which the answer to that question is “Yes.”

In the SBMM debate, there is a group of players who feel that it’s something of a rite of passage for lower-skilled players to occasionally be matched with higher skilled players. It’s a mentality based partially on the old-school methods of matchmaking which didn’t always take skill level into account or at least didn’t emphasize that element as a primary matchmaking parameter. Some players feels that if they went through the process of facing much tougher opponents, then everyone should. There are even some who have called SBMM a system for “participation trophy” players who they believe don’t want to be matched against “better” players.

Not everyone who criticizes SBMM buys into or touts that “participation trophy” mentality, but there is a general feeling among the anti-SBMM crowd that the multiplayer games need a space where SBMM isn’t used. For some content creators, for example, the anti-SBMM mentality is an extension of their desire to more easily produce YouTube highlight videos by playing against opponents of lesser skill.

This brings us to “try-hard” players.

Also known as a “sweaty” player, the exact definition of a try-hard player isn’t exactly set in stone, but the term typically applies to players who other gamers believe are taking a multiplayer game too seriously and are trying too hard to win. The term can apply to cheaters and those who get angry at their teammates during matches, but it’s not uncommon to hear it used to slander anyone who camps with a sniper rifle or uses the most powerful weapon in a game rather than a “fun” alternative.

It’s a popular belief among those in the anti-SBMM community that so-called “sweaty” players are the ones who keep pushing for skill-based matchmaking. This claim is particularly popular with streamers and content creators who say that they’re tired of being matched against try-hard players who force them to play so intensely just to survive a match when they just want to relax, have fun, and occasionally just goof off.

That mentality has been criticized by some who point out that those whose livelihoods are partially based on spending hundreds (or thousands) of hours in a game would also qualify as try-hard players according to broad definitions of the word. Of course, that’s the other problem. The use of “try-hard’ as an insult is really based on perception. You can really throw it out in just about any instance and justify it however you’d like. While many agree that in-game cheaters and toxic teammates are typically deserving of the phrase, the fact is that the usage of “try-hard” is typically proportional to a player’s anger at any given time.

It’s another example of how the SBMM argument often boils down to emotion. What about logical solutions to this potential problem, though?

How Can Call of Duty Fix Its SBMM “Problem?”

Many of those who oppose SBMM in games are often quick to note that the solution to this problem lies in the expansion of a game’s ranked system.

Again, people differ on the details, but the idea is that most competitive multiplayer games should feature at least two modes. The first mode, designed for more casual play, will not utilize SBMM (or will at least use a very toned-down version of the matchmaking system) while the second, a ranked mode, will utilize SBMM and give players official rankings and rewards for reaching new levels.

On paper, it’s a solid solution, based on the belief that SBMM systems don’t offer an accurate indication of a player’s skill level or any incentives to reach a higher skill threshold. In other words, top players are doing all the work of playing against other top players but they have nothing to really show for it outside of the pleasure of playing in a theoretically competitively balanced environment.

The implementation of an expansive ranking system complete with rewards isn’t even all that far-fetched. Games like Hearthstone, Overwatch, and League of Legends all offer some kind of a reward and ranking system. While few would claim that any of those games feature perfect matchmaking, those games are obviously not caught in the crossfire of the SBMM controversy quite like Call of Duty, Apex Legends, and Fortnite.

While an extensive ranking system could solve some of the SBMM problems, it’s not a perfect solution.

The biggest problem with implementing a ranking system brings us back to the question of preference. If you are a casual player and a game offers you both Casual and Ranked mode options, you may assume that the Casual option will offer a more relaxed play experience. However, under the most popular variations of this solution, Casual modes could match you against nearly anyone, meaning that the chances of being matched against players well-above your skill level are much higher there. Meanwhile, in SBMM-enabled ranked option, players would be further incentivized to play with a competitive mindset to earn new rankings and rewards. That could lead to an increasingly toxic gaming environment, especially in team and squad-based modes, while leaving those who want to just play more casual matches with even less options.

Some games, like Hearthstone’s recently revamped Battlegrounds mode, still use an internal rating system to determine matchmaking that doesn’t always match up with the external rank conveyed to the player. SBMM critics point out that such systems make many modern ranking systems useless since they still don’t relay a player’s skill level relative to matchmaking. Some SBMM defenders note that internal matchmaking parameters are often more reliable in comparison to in-game ranked systems that can sometimes be exploited by individual players.

While many SBMM solutions involve some kind of extensive ranking system, further alternatives exist. One of the more interesting proposals involves going back (at least to an extent) to the days of private playlists and custom server selections. Players argue that a more classic approach would not only foster better communities of like-minded players but that they offer gamers more opporunities to find multiplayer matches that fit their needs.

We could go on, but it all comes back to the same point. There’s not really a perfect system, and many SBMM alternatives suffer from logistical hurdles that made SBMM systems increasingly popular in the first place.

Will Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Have a SBMM System at Launch?

The Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War development team has indicated that some kind of SBMM system will be featured in the final version of the game. While Treyarch will undoubtedly continue to tweak Cold War’s multiplayer systems ahead of release, it doesn’t seem like SBMM will be going away any time soon. In fact, at least one member of the series’ development team recently defended SBMM as a concept and cited its uses in just about every major Call of Duty game in modern times.

Of course, the bigger issue is how SBMM has divided the gaming (and especially Call of Duty) community. It’ll be interesting to see whether major multiplayer studios will pursue alternatives or serious modifications to existing SBMM systems in an attempt to bridge the increasingly widening cultural gap.
