UN chief: World is at `pivotal moment’ (AP) U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a dire warning that the world is moving in the wrong direction and faces “a pivotal moment” where continuing business as usual could lead to a breakdown of global order and a future of perpetual crisis. Changing course could signal a breakthrough to a greener and safer future, he said. The U.N. chief said the world’s nations and people must reverse today’s dangerous trends and choose “the breakthrough scenario.” The world is under “enormous stress” on almost every front, he said, and the COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call demonstrating the failure of nations to come together and take joint decisions to help all people in the face of a global life-threatening emergency. Guterres said this “paralysis” extends far beyond COVID-19 to the failures to tackle the climate crisis and “our suicidal war on nature and the collapse of biodiversity,” the “unchecked inequality” undermining the cohesion of societies, and technology’s advances “without guard rails to protect us from its unforeseen consequences.” In other signs of a more chaotic and insecure world, he pointed to rising poverty, hunger and gender inequality after decades of decline, the extreme risk to human life and the planet from nuclear war and a climate breakdown, and the inequality, discrimination and injustice bringing people into the streets to protest.
World marks 20th anniversary of 9/11 (AP) The world solemnly marked the 20th anniversary of 9/11 on Saturday, remembering the dead, invoking the heroes and taking stock of the aftermath just weeks after the bloody end of the Afghanistan war that was launched in response to the terror attacks. Victims’ relatives and four U.S. presidents paid respects at the sites where hijacked planes killed nearly 3,000 people in the deadliest act of terrorism on American soil. Others gathered for observances from Portland, Maine, to Guam, or for volunteer projects on what has become a day of service in the U.S. Foreign leaders expressed sympathy over an attack that happened in the U.S. but claimed victims from more than 90 countries.
Phony diagnoses are hiding high rates of drugging at nursing homes (NYT) The risks to patients treated with antipsychotics—which understaffed nursing homes have often used as “chemical straitjackets”—are so high that nursing homes must report to the government how many of their residents are on these potent medications. But there is an important caveat: The government doesn’t publicly divulge the use of antipsychotics given to residents with schizophrenia or two other conditions. A Times investigation found a pattern of questionable schizophrenia diagnoses nationwide. The result: The government and the industry are obscuring the true rate of antipsychotic drug use on vulnerable residents. The share of residents with a schizophrenia diagnosis has increased to 11 percent from less than 7 percent since 2012. At least 21 percent of nursing home residents are on antipsychotic drugs.
Tropical Storm Nicholas forms in Gulf of Mexico (AP) Tropical Storm Nicholas strengthened as it headed for the Gulf Coast on Sunday, threatening heavy rain and floods in coastal areas of Texas, Mexico and Louisiana. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said tropical storm warnings were issued for coastal Texas and the northeast coast of Mexico. Nicholas is expected to produce total rainfall of 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters), with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches, across portions of coastal Texas into southwest Louisiana on Sunday through midweek. The storm was expected to bring the heaviest rainfall west of where Hurricane Ida slammed into Louisiana two weeks ago.
Britain decides against vaccine passports (AP) Britain’s health secretary said Sunday that authorities have decided not to require vaccine passports for entry into nightclubs and other crowded events in England, reversing course amid opposition from some of the Conservative government’s supporters in Parliament. Sajid Javid said the government has shelved the idea of vaccine passports for now but could reconsider the decision if COVID-19 cases rise exponentially once again. The U-turn came just days after the government’s vaccines minister and the culture secretary suggested that vaccine passports would still be necessary, despite growing opposition from lawmakers. Such passports are required in other European countries, like France. Members of the governing Conservative Party have objected to such passports as an unacceptable burden on businesses and an infringement on residents’ human rights.
Thousands of Catalans rally for independence in Barcelona (Reuters) Thousands of Catalans chanted, sang and waved flags as they marched through Barcelona on Saturday, calling for the region’s independence from Spain. The march, organised by the grassroots Assemblea Nacional Catalana ANC, was the first since Spain’s government pardoned nine Catalan separatist leaders who had been jailed for their role in a 2017 botched bid for independence, which was Spain’s biggest political crisis in decades. Most marchers wore face coverings. Police said about 108,000 people took part. ANC put the figure close to 400,000. The protests took place at a moment of lower tension between Barcelona and Madrid than in past years as the central and regional governments favour dialogue despite their opposing views on independence.
In Hungary, pope meets PM Orban, his political opposite (Reuters) Pope Francis arrived in Hungary early on Sunday, starting an unusually short stay that underlines differences with his political opposite, nationalist and anti-immigrant Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Francis, 84, who is spending only seven hours in the capital Budapest, went directly from the airport to a private meeting with Orban and President Janos Ader in the Museum of Fine Arts. Unlike nearly every other papal trip, there was no live television coverage of the preliminary greetings or the photo opportunities that usually precede and follow such meetings. The pope is making the brief Budapest stop to say a Mass closing an international Roman Catholic meeting, known as an International Eucharist Congress. On Sunday afternoon he moves on to Slovakia, where he will stay much longer, visiting four cities before returning to Rome on Wednesday.
Nine-cent taxi rides in rural South Korea are a “godsend.” (NYT) In 2013, Seocheon County faced a crisis. As its population declined, so did the number of bus passengers, which led to unprofitable routes being canceled, stranding those in remote hamlets who did not own cars. The county’s solution? The 100-won taxi. (Longer routes cost 1,500 won, or about $1.30.) Anyone whose hamlet is more than 2,300 feet from a bus stop can call one, and the county picks up the rest of the fare. The taxis carried nearly 40,000 passengers last year, which cost the county $147,000. Since the 100-won taxi was introduced, people in remote villages have traveled outside twice as often, according to a government survey. More than 2.7 million passengers used similar taxi services in rural South Korea last year.
Strong typhoon cuts power, causes flooding in northern Philippines (Reuters) Several communities remain flooded and without power after a strong typhoon battered the Philippines’ northernmost islands, the authorities said on Sunday, displacing thousands of people. Typhoon Chanthu, which at one point was categorised by the Philippine weather bureau as a category 5 storm, has weakened after powering into the northernmost region, including the Batanes island group, on Saturday, the weather bureau said. “It’s one of the strongest typhoons I’ve felt,” said Dennis Ballesteros Valdez, a resident of Sabtang town in the province of Batanes, which is often pummelled by powerful typhoons. Some 20 typhoons hit the Philippines on average each year, according to the weather authorities.
Taliban flag rises over seat of power on fateful anniversary (AP) The Taliban raised their flag over the Afghan presidential palace Saturday, a spokesman said, as the U.S. and the world marked the 20th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The white banner, emblazoned with a Quranic verse, was hoisted by Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund, the prime minister of the Taliban interim government, in a low-key ceremony. In a tweet, Afghanistan’s first president to follow the 2001 collapse of the Taliban, Hamid Karzai, called for “peace and stability” and expressed the hope that the new caretaker Cabinet that included no women and no non-Taliban would become an “inclusive government that can be the real face of the whole Afghanistan.”
Death and suffering in Iraq a painful legacy of 9/11 attacks (AP) Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. But the terrorist attacks in the United States changed forever the lives of Iraqis. In their aftermath, the U.S. invaded Afghanistan, swiftly deposing the Taliban regime that had been sheltering Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al-Qaida terror network blamed for the attacks. But it was not long before President George W. Bush shifted his attention to Iraq, identifying it, along with Iran and North Korea, as part of an “axis of evil” and asserting that its brutal dictator, Saddam Hussein, was armed with weapons of mass destruction and had ties to al-Qaida. No evidence of either was found. What followed was a U.S.-led invasion of a country in the heart of the Middle East that spurred a decade of war, with consequences that reverberate across the region to this day. After decades of conflict, Iraq today has a relatively stable government, and the car bombings, suicide attacks and death squads have subsided. But the economy is in tatters, its infrastructure is crumbling and corruption is rampant. The government, with its fractious politics, is unable to control the dozens of powerful Iran-backed militias that wield enormous control.

It's been 7 years.
Whenever Tacloban came to mind before, most people who were adept to Philippine history would either associate it with MacArthur's return or maybe picture the San Juanico Bridge.
But ever since November 8, 2013, the first thing that people would most likely talk about Tacloban would be the devastation brought about by Super Typhoon Yolanda (internationally named Haiyan).
Memories do fade when we choose not to go over them every once in a while, but every time the anniversary of the storm rolls around, I am transported back to the details of that horrible November day.
I can never erase the images of thousands of dead bodies on the streets, the creaking sound of the hospital roof being blown away by 195mph winds, the smell of rotting bodies, garbage, intertwining with my own sweat and blood. The awful feeling of dread and loss as my grandfather quietly died in my arms inside the hospital, with the gentle touch of the nurses telling us that we should move his body outside of the room we were staying in so as not to discomfort the other people who had seek refuge in the same room. These things don't easily fade from my memory.
The storm and the humanitarian distaster that came after brought about many personal changes. I left Tacloban to continue a semester of my studies in UP Diliman. I discovered how much I didn't know what it tuly was that I wanted to do. I became so much more aware of how difficult my living situation was and it affected me up until I graduated in UPVTC. Even now, remnants of the storm still pop up in my dreams.
Any news that involves storms always takes me back to Yolanda.
Tacloban is a different city now from what I remembered. There are still traces of the destruction and the ineptitude of our government to handle natural disasters are still a recurring nightmare.
7 years on, Yolanda's wrath may just be a memory to some, but for those of us who have felt head on the distaster, it is clear that the consequences of the storm are still very much a reality we try to overcome.

On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Yolanda hit the Philippines. It has been described as the greatest powerful storm to hit land in recorded history. Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) widely affected urban areas in Philippines. It damaged 3,42 households (161 million people) with 6,300 casualties and 1,061 missing in the Philippines as of April 17. The total number of damaged buildings became 1,084,762: heavily 489,613 and moderately 595,149.
In the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda thousands of aid workers arrived in the disaster zone and millions of dollars in foreign aid poured into the local economy in support of the humanitarian relief and rehabilitation effort. but despite of many help and donations came there is still a problem. Tatay Casimiro Villas experienced one of those, where he could not get the bodies of his dead family members because The government insists on several documentary requirements for them to claim the body but due to Yolanda's brutality there was nothing left of the necessary documents.
But as a normal citizen the only thing to help is to pressure the government to allow attestation by the barangay captain as proof of identity or arrange community visits by document depository agencies so Yolanda survivors can pursue claims without shouldering additional financial and emotional burdens.
Many years already past, I guess Tatay Casimiro Villas already retrieve the bodies of his dead family. I'm only 7 years old when Typhoon Yolanda hit Philippines so I really can't help during those time, but the only thing I can do now is to pray for those dead people to rest in peace.

DRRM kuwentuhan and community walk on the plan and management of Brgy Bahay Toro Project 8 Quezon City
I am Sean Peregrina from UST NSTP CWTS section C-SCI-3 and I conducted a DRRM kwentuhan in our community with my interviewee Mrs. Marie Sol Reyes – Tala, Our Barangay Secretary and my community walk around my community, which is well diverse and also big. Here are some pictures and parts of my interview with our barangay secretary, Mrs. Marie Sol Reyes – Tala:
Barangay Bahay Toro Project 8 in Quezon city Is a well diverse barangay in Quezon city, with well off people to the middle class people and then the informal settlers. There we have a total of 23 subdivisions and many other areas like sitios and other areas not in a subdivision. Barangay Bahay Toro was founded back in the 60s by virtue of city ordinance no. 60 – 45. Our barangay today is not a hazard prone thankfully and it is only rare when they experience calamities and disasters. The one that really struck our barangay was the typhoon ondoy, which was really strong, and the amount of rainfall was more than a lot and after that the whole city of quezon city and not only bahay toro was assessed and the one that really affected the barangays and other areas area clogged drainages due to the bad practice of some people in our community like improper waste segregation and littering. The ones affected the most are people near creeks and the informal settlers who does not follow the process of building permit and all which are not guaranteed safe.
We don’t have many issues in the community today that makes it hazardous but there are some like people who do not cooperate much with barangay representatives and the officials and mostly because they are saying they have rights of privacy but then what they are doing is for the good of the barangay and its people. Some possible solutions the barangay can do is to make it mandatory and enforce it more like put fines or anything if people does not comply for this is really important and it should really be enforced no matter white especially to those informal settlers and some class a and b people who are very ‘pushy’ about their rights of privacy.
And now, our country Philippines are experiencing lots of issues and one is the DRRM preparedness and all especially for the big one and yes it is really an issue for the calamity itself is big and according to Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study (MMEIRS), the big one would most likely leave casualties of 33,500 people dead and an about 113,600 more injured (Rappler.com). I think it should be of priority and importance for this is an impending disaster that will destroy our society if we do not prepare for it.
Then as I conducted the interview and the community walk I realized that our society, not only in our community, is very smart, wise, literate and they know a lot but then we are not good with making decisions. The informal settlers does not secure proper building permit and they are the most vulnerable in our community and they will be the least resilient when the big one comes and I believe that these people will blame the city government and our barangay government even though it’s their fault. I realized another thing that there are good people, who thinks for the safety of our community more than they should and more than their jobs but then there are these bad people who does not care much about the community but rather they just think for their own selves but then I believe that these negative things does not happen all the time.
We can address the issues in our country today regarding DRRM by enforcing it more and by not making it voluntary for most people would take it for granted because we were not struck by very big calamities and disasters for a very long time and it is very bad. The NDRRMC, LGUs and other government officials, with the help of other private organizations and individuals are doing their best in all aspects to ensure our safety and resiliency for the big one and many more hazards and natural disasters are coming, some are expected and inevitable like ‘the big one’(MoneyMax.ph, 2017) but most of the time these are unexpected and so it is really important to enforce the laws and the DRRM plans of the country and the communities and the people in it.
As a member of my community, I believe that I should start by showing good examples such as segregating the waste properly, Avoid littering around some places in our community and all the little things that we can contribute by cooperating with our barangay government which is essential so that they can ensure our safety and in our country as well, we do our duties, we pay our taxes, we do all the little thing we can and must do so that we will have a harmonious and collaborative country which will help us and save us from the upcoming Hazards and Disasters.

Researching Asian Ancestry Is Becoming Easier, Thanks to Those Like Derek Dobson
While Derek Dobson served a proselyting mission in Hong Kong from 1985 to 1986, he posed for a photo on a hillside overlooking the border between Hong Kong and mainland China. As a young man from rural Canada, this was an exciting new experience. Even with his love of the Chinese people and fluency in the language, Derek could not have guessed what powerful ties he would weave over his lifetime with people scattered throughout Asia and the Pacific.
Derek’s Early Life and Career
Derek Dobson was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. At age 9, he and his family moved to nearby Okotoks, a small community just south of Calgary. Like many young boys his age, Derek enjoyed athletics and participated in local sports programs.
As a teenager, Derek was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints through a friend who shared his enthusiasm for sports. It was during his first trip to the Cardston Temple at age 15 that Derek became fascinated with family history. Inscribed on a brass plaque in the entry were the words “Joined here by powers that past and present bind the living and the dead perfection find.” Those tender words stirred up deep feelings of love within him toward his ancestors.
After graduating high school, he decided to serve as a missionary for the Church and was asked to serve in Hong Kong. While there, he met his future wife, Cynthia Jean Lund, a fellow missionary also serving in Hong Kong. Soon after their missions, they chose to marry. Today the Dobsons have 7 children, including 2 who were adopted from China.
Derek obtained his bachelor’s degree in Asian studies from Brigham Young University with a minor in Mandarin. He then proceeded to work in Hong Kong as a country manager for WordPerfect and Novell and eventually pursued an MBA in international business.
Every step of his education and career seemed to propel Derek toward a combination of three great loves—technology, Asia, and family history. Derek started with FamilySearch in 2003 and has filled a series of assignments that increasingly turned his attention toward Asia and the Pacific. Derek is knowledgeable about many of this region’s countries and cultures, including Australia, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. He is fluent in both Cantonese and Mandarin.
Making Ancestral Research Easier Is the Goal
Derek Dobson currently serves as a customer experience manager at FamilySearch with an emphasis in Asian ancestry. His team is presently working on making the website more culturally authentic and inviting for people from all over the world to use FamilySearch’s services and to feel comfortable sharing their information with FamilySearch. Derek explains, “It’s all about trust and willingness to share their data with us.”
This is accomplished by offering different content to users based on language, country, or region. Derek states, “We try to make our website inviting based on the perceptions and practices of the people who are using it.”
“The pursuit of family history is deeply engrained in some Asian cultures,” says Derek. Historically, for instance, Chinese and Korean people have gathered and maintained family records over many generations. The Chinese collections, known as jiapu, are generally maintained by clans, which can be massive in size—millions of people.
Record Indexing Is Vital for Making the World’s Records Accessible
Another key factor to making ancestor research available on FamilySearch is its indexing projects. Indexing is a volunteer transcription effort that makes genealogical records freely searchable online. “The power of indexing drives part of our searching, matching, and hinting we now have on FamilySearch,” Derek explains. Through the selfless effort of countless volunteers, millions of people worldwide have found information about their ancestors.
Derek enjoys reflecting on the original FamilySearch indexing project, one of his earlier assignments at FamilySearch. “Being able to index records has made today’s genealogy very different,” says Derek. He loves to recall how his small development team aimed to make the genealogical and vital records stored in the FamilySearch archives near Salt Lake City, Utah, within easy reach of researchers everywhere.
This was a worldwide effort to index the names and data from 2.4 million rolls of microfilm and make it available digitally online. Genealogical data from 110 countries and principalities was included. Some of the original indexing participants were convinced they would never participate in active genealogical research, yet they found themselves immersed in this exciting activity.
Derek’s Visit to the Philippines—Indexing Renews Records Destroyed in a Typhoon
Because of indexing, the number of vital records available on FamilySearch continues to increase. Yet it is the personal impact of this effort that gives Derek a sense of satisfaction.
Derek recounts a particular experience while visiting the Philippines in 2014. The country had been devastated the previous year by Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Super Typhoon Yolanda), the most severe typhoon to ever hit the Philippines. With winds sustained at more than 140 miles per hour and gusts up to 195 miles per hour, the lands were ripped to shreds and the storm waves were compared to tsunami waves. An estimated 9,000 people died, and property damage was set at nearly $3 billion.
Three small villages on the shore of Eastern Samar, Philippines, were left in shambles. Their vital statistics archives for the local population were completely gone, literally with the wind. “We visited with a local mayor from one of the communities,” says Derek. “We told him we had put their records on microfilm 5 years earlier and had brought copies back with us. He didn’t seem impressed until I showed him a copy of his own birth certificate. Then he burst into tears. He had never seen it before.”
The mayor’s story is one common to many people around the world who appear to go through life unaware of the written evidence of their existence. But FamilySearch is “bringing these records to life” through the efforts of those like Derek Dobson who seek to preserve vital records worldwide and make them accessible online.

Shooting locations can sometimes make or break a film; there are many films in which the location plays a big role in the story. A beautiful or interesting location can really immerse viewers into the movie and enhance the viewing experience.
RELATED: 10 Horror Movie Sets On Which Actors Were Nearly Killed
Some shooting locations can be so exotic or extreme that it can create a difficult or even detrimental situation for production. Here are ten movies with extreme locations, some of which helped the movie stand out, and others that proved to be calamitous.
10 127 Hours (Utah)
James Franco stars in this 2010 survival drama which takes place in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. This movie was filmed on location and director Danny Boyle hired two cinematographers, Anthony Dod Mantle, who had collaborated with Boyle previously on Slumdog Millionaire, and Enrique Chediak to take shifts for the long, grueling days shooting in the canyon.
Franco had to spend a lot of time in a very small space and was often uncomfortable and even in pain during some scenes, which made his job portraying Aron Ralston's harrowing ordeal easier in some ways despite the challenging nature of the set.
9 The Martian (Jordan)
The Martian takes place in the future year of 2035 and tells the story of an astronaut becoming separated from the rest of his crew on Mars in a dust storm and presumed dead. Matt Damon portrays Mark Watney, who must find a way to survive alone on the red planet for the next four years.
Much of the production took place in a village called Etyek just outside of Budapest, Hungary, because it had a huge sound stage that was perfect for filming interiors. For exteriors, however, the crew traveled to Wadi Rum, Jordan. Also known as 'The Valley of the Moon," this world heritage site provided the perfect backdrop for mimicking Mars' vast, alien landscapes.
8 Black Panther (Uganda)
One of the goals for the creators of Black Panther was to have it serve as a homage to several sub-Sahara African cultures while at the same time staying true to the comics. Production designer Hanna Beachler created the world of Black Panther by studying the cultures and technologies of existing tribes and brainstormed how the technology and infrastructure would have advanced had colonialism not interfered.
RELATED: 10 Ways Black Panther Changed The World For The Better
Location was an important aspect in keeping this goal in mind. Black Panther had several locations in which it was shot, including several sound stages in Atlanta, Georgia, on location in South Korea and the Rwenzori Mountains and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is part of a huge forest of the same name, and it's also named by the U.N. as a cultural heritage site and one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.
7 Predator (Mexico)
The original 1987 version of Predator was filmed in the jungles of Palenque Mexico. This location posed several problems, including extreme temperatures and wet conditions. Heat lamps had to be brought in, and many of the scenes took place on hills and uneven ground. At one point during filming, Arnold Schwarzenegger had to trudge through cold swampy water filled with thick mud and leeches while being chased by the Predator. Schwarzenegger called the experience a "survival story."
6 Monos (Colombia)
This war drama was shot on location in Chingaza National Natural Park, and at the Samaná River in Colombia. Filming for Monos lasted nine weeks in these intense but beautiful places. The jungle scenes, in particular, were unusual for a film shoot because of how remote and untouched by humans the location was.
A base camp had to be established for the crew complete with military tents, and food and equipment were carried up the mountains by donkeys. The crew dealt with heavy rainfall, elevation sickness, and scarce resources like electricity and refrigerated food as they filmed high in the mountains.
5 Apocalypse Now (The Philippines)
Production for Apocalypse Now was famously riddled with problems and struggles. One of the many woes the film cast, crew, and director faced was the difficult location. A huge typhoon rocked the Philippines two months into filming, delaying production for three months.
Even worse, some of the sets were destroyed in the storms. Much of the crew ended up flying back to the U.S. to wait out the conditions. Despite all the difficulties production faced, they eventually overcame them, and Apocalypse Now would go on to win the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival. It's now considered by many to be one of the best films ever made.
4 Mad Max: Fury Road (South Africa)
2015's Mad Max: Fury Road was able to achieve its unique apocalyptic aesthetic by shooting in Dorob National Park, located in one of the oldest deserts in the world, The Namib Desert in South Africa. While the scenery was beautiful, the conditions were harsh; actors dealt with sand, wind, and freezing temperatures at night.
RELATED: Deadpool & 9 Other Movies That Barely Escaped Development Hell
There were also other environmental difficulties in terms of conservation. A leaked report had stated that some endangered plants had been damaged during filming. Despite the rough and destructive nature of the scenes, the claim of environmental damage was later disputed, and the Namibian Coast Conservation and Management Project said that the report was an unfinalized draft and shouldn't have been used to make a judgment call.
3 Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (New Zealand)
This epic collection of movies were made famous thanks to their beautiful scenery and stunning landscapes. In fact, New Zealand has enjoyed an increase in tourism partially due to The Lord Of The Rings, and travelers can go on "Lord of the Rings Tours" where they can visit the movie's actual locations. Over 150 locations in New Zealand were used for the movies, including the city of Matamata and Queenstown, which is a resort town on the South Island.
2 Jaws (The Atlantic Ocean)
Steven Spielberg's decision to shoot a portion of the principal photography on the open ocean caused a few different problems and delays. At one point, one of the boats carrying the cast and crew actually began sinking and had to be evacuated, and a stuntman almost drowned while he was trying to get footage of real sharks to add to the movie.
Because of these difficulties, much of the crew doubted and disliked Spielberg on the set of Jaws, but, in the end, it became the first of many successes. The decision to shoot on the water paid off as the ocean scenes were all the more realistic, evoking danger and a lack of control.
1 The Revenant (Canada)
This rugged and brutal tale finally earned Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar. The harshness of The Revenant is reflected in its setting. The Canadian Rockies was where much of the scenes were shot, but the cast and crew also filmed in remote areas of Argentina, Italy, and Montana.
There were some crew members that quit the shoot because of intense conditions and freezing weather. DiCaprio stated that wading through freezing river waters for this movie was one of the most difficult tests of his career.

US reimposes tariffs on Argentina and Brazil (Bloomberg) U.S. President Donald Trump said he is reinstating tariffs on steel and aluminum from Argentina and Brazil. The move amounts to retaliation against two nations that have become big suppliers of soybeans to China, grabbing market share away from the U.S. during Trump’s trade war. Rural U.S. voters, including farmers who have been damaged by the conflict, are a key constituency for Trump.
U.N. Climate Meetings Begin With Message of Urgency (Foreign Policy) This year’s annual U.N. UK PM Johnson to strengthen prison sentences to boost security (Reuters) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would strengthen prison sentences, vowing to boost security after an attack in London by a man jailed for terrorism who had been released early. Less than two weeks before Britain heads to the polls, law and order has taken top billing since Usman Khan, wearing a fake suicide vest and wielding knives, killed two people on Friday before being shot dead by police. London held a vigil for Jack Merritt, 25, and Saskia Jones, 23, both former students active in a program on prisoner rehabilitation, who were killed by Usman Khan near London Bridge.
French unions call for unlimited strike (Eurointelligence.com, Times of London) Three French trade unions called for an unlimited strike starting this Thursday. They promise to immobilize the country with planned strikes on the train and metro networks, roads, and airports as well as in schools, energy companies and hospitals. Will the trade unions be able to guarantee an orderly strike? Or will it become a cyclone of various grievances and explode on to the street, as Le Monde puts it? Students already have said they will join in, accusing the government of inaction over rising poverty. The gilets jaunes are also preparing to go back on the streets again. These protesters will test Emmanuel Macron’s determination to push through the pension reform. This is not about whether the reform is sensible or not. This is about testing his resilience. Taliban Ready to Resume Negotiations (Foreign Policy) Both the Taliban and the Afghan government appeared caught off guard by U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement during a Thanksgiving Day visit to Afghanistan--his first since taking office--that the Taliban was ready to agree to a cease-fire deal. But the insurgent group responded quickly, with a spokesman saying on Friday that they were “ready to restart the talks.” It’s not yet clear if the renewed discussions will lead to peace. Key disputes still need to be resolved, including the Taliban’s refusal to talk directly with the Afghan government. And, contrary to what Trump said last week, there are no signs the Taliban is ready for a cease-fire--a condition that has long been a sticking point for the insurgent group, which primarily uses violence as leverage.
India eyes Trump’s Turkey treatment (Foreign Policy) Trump has held off enacting mandatory sanctions on Turkey in response to its purchase of a Russian missile defense system, a decision that could have implications for U.S. strategic allies elsewhere. India, in particular, is watching these developments closely: It recently purchased its own S-400 system from Russia in addition to a contract for local production of 464 T-90S battle tanks. Much of its own future security relationship with Moscow will depend on how Washington chooses to respond. The move is a sign that second-rate powers in Asia and beyond could find it advantageous to play the great powers off of each other for their own geopolitical gain.
Closer ties between Moscow and Beijing (Foreign Policy) A 1,800-mile long pipeline will begin delivering natural gas from Russia to China today, marking the completion of a major project for both countries. The pipeline, announced after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and sought to reduce its reliance on European energy customers, is part of a trend of greater cooperation between Moscow and Beijing. Trade between the countries has reached record levels, and joint military maneuvers suggest the economic cooperation has expanded into growing military ties.

4 dead, 6 missing in Cebu mine landslide
#PHnews: 4 dead, 6 missing in Cebu mine landslide
CEBU CITY – Four miners were confirmed dead while six others have remained missing following a landslide at the mining site of the Carmen Copper Corp. (CCC) in Toledo City in midwestern Cebu Monday afternoon.
Local authorities here have searched the area since early Tuesday to rescue the still missing miners.
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Central Visayas (MGB-7) has sent a team to Toledo City to assess the current situation.
MGB director Wilfredo Moncano said on Tuesday official investigation on the incident is now ongoing.
“The mine pit operation is temporarily suspended to determine the cause of the landslide,” he said.
Moncano cited initial findings which indicate that Typhoon Vicky may have “exacerbated the already waterlogged limestone and mudstone layer from the prior typhoons that weakened its contact with the intrusive rock base.”
He said a fault line called the Barot fault was also observed in the slide area and may have contributed to the landslide.
MGB-7 regional director Armando Malicse and Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Central Visayas regional executive director Paquito Melicor Jr. are also expected to visit the area.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Mines of the Philippines said the incident is quite unfortunate.
“Atlas is known for its strict adherence to the highest safety and health standards. Nevertheless, accidents happen in any industry. This is why the Chamber and its members are constantly looking for ways to further improve our safety and health protocols,” it said in a statement.
“The important thing is for the industry to learn lessons from incidents such as this to continue to improve its protocols and practices. Undoubtedly the industry as a whole will absorb the lessons from this incident,” the chamber added.
The landslide occurred at around 4:15 p.m. at the Carmen Pit, CCC’s mine operations site.
Toledo-based CCC is an operating mine of publicly-listed Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC).
In a statement disclosed to the stock exchange Tuesday, ACMDC said “the incident was traceable to the incessant rains for the past several months and aggravated by Typhoon Vicky which hit parts of the Visayas, including Toledo City last Friday, December 18, 2020.”
“The Management of CCC is doing all the necessary action to assess and address the overall situation. We will continue to inform the concerned agencies as well the general public of further developments,” the mining firm said. (PNA)

ENGLISH VERSION
1. NARCISO OLALO August 22, 2013 Message of God I WALK WITH JESUS CHRIST WITH THE HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS. THIS MEANS THAT GOD WANTS US TO KNOW THAT THERE WILL BE AN UPCOMING TYPHOON. WHILE WE WERE WALKING, HE TOLD ME “IT’S ALREADY LATE IN THE EVENING, AND I DON’T THINK PEOPLE ARE THINKING OF ME AS TO WHERE I AM NOW, WHAT THEY ARE DOING? THEY ARE SO BUSY AT WORK FOR MONEY AND NOT CONTENTED OF SIMPLE LIFE. NOW, IT’S TOO LATE BECAUSE MANY WILL BE HAPPENING THAT WILL BE FRIGHTENING AND GOD SCREAMED “TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ATTEMPTED TO KILL YOU, EVERY ONE OF THEM WILL DIE; I RATHER KILL THEM” THE WORD OF GOD. LET US GO BACK TO GOD. THERE WILL BE AN UPCOMING STRONG TYPHOON IN VISAYAS AREA AND CAMIGUIN. THIS IS WHAT I SEE IN THE MESSAGE FROM GOD, AND I STILL WISH THAT THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN BUT ACCORDING TO GOD, EVERY MESSAGE THAT I CONVEY WILL OCCUR OR ELSE PEOPLE WILL CALL ME A LIAR.” THE WORD OF THE LORD.
2. Narciso Olalo October 1, 2013, • Sept. 30, 2013, and October 01, 2013 Message OF God: In one night prior to 12:00 midnight, I saw this and I awoke. When I went back to sleep, it showed again, so it is covered on October 1. I simply share the message from God, and it’s up to you to believe it or not. Of all the messages that I shared with you all since God started to use me as an instrument to share His messages, this is the strongest typhoon that will ever happen says the Almighty Father. The word of the Lord. I found a supermassive flood that will occur. I saw that the households were covered with water; people were climbing up coconut trees to save themselves and some trees were falling apart. I was crying, and I said “Lord Jesus Christ, forgive all the people and I saw that there were many dead people, drowned in the water and difficult to recognize any place, lost telephone signals” and I shouted, “Lord Jesus Christ, you said this in the bible that you won’t repeat it like in Noah's time.”
3. Narciso Olalo October 20, 2013 The message of God: I saw a great tragedy that will happen according to the message from God. There will be a shortage of coffin, the reason is unclear. Also, I saw heavy traffic, and people were even walking due to heavy traffic. I saw a one-way road, upper and lower road. Everybody should be careful. Your faith in God will save you from this tragedy.
4. Narciso Olalo October 25, 2013 The message of God: God said that there will come a time that there will be a shortage of coffin, and this is scary. If you will ask me, I will rather be called a liar rather than this typhoon to happen because many lives will be lost. But what did God say to me? "All messages that you sent to them will happen or else people will say “you’re a liar” or what you are saying is not true. Therefore, all messages that I asked you to share with the people will happen. “The word of the Lord.
5. Narciso Olalo November 7, 2013 "There's no way to run, There's no place to hide, stay where you are at mag hihintay nalang kayo na matatabunan ng lupa at tubig dahil ang tunay na naniwala sa akin na si Jesus Christ walang kinakatakutan." ang salita ng Diyos

But the nation appeared to avoid a major disaster because the rapidly moving typhoon blew away before wreaking more damage, officials said. Latest Tropical Storm Heads for Philippines as Relief Efforts Continue; USD 45 Million Appeal Launched
Manila – As tropical depression Ulysses developed into a tropical storm by Monday evening (09/11), the International Organization for Migration (IOM)–with government and other partners—continued to provide urgent humanitarian aid across the region. The storm is headed towards the Bicol region, which is still reeling from the devastation wrought by Super Typhoon Goni and Typhoon Molave in recent weeks On Monday (09/11), the United Nations and humanitarian partners in the Philippines launched an appeal for USD 45.5 million to bring life-saving assistance and protection to hundreds of thousands of people affected by the recent typhoons. Launching the appeal, Gustavo Gonzalez, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in the Philippines, said the humanitarian community is ready to translate “solidarity into concrete support” through a coordinated response, combining emergency relief and early recovery, with support from donors. According to Philippines state weather bureau PAGASA, Ulysses is projected to make landfall over the Bicol region and Quezon province by Wednesday (11/11). The 21st tropical storm in the Philippines this year, Ulysses comes as much of southern Luzon is recovering from two other storms—Super Typhoon Goni (Rolly) and Typhoon Molave (Quinta)–which left dozens dead and caused extensive destruction across the region. Typhoon Goni struck as the Philippines faced multifaceted challenges, affecting a total of 1.9 million individuals, over 950,000 just within the Bicol region. Currently, some 128,200 individuals remain displaced with 72,500 staying in 744 evacuation sites. The Philippines has one of the highest levels of COVID-19 transmission in the Asia Pacific region. More than 398,000 cases have been confirmed, of which 29,018 are active. As of 10 November, some 7,674 have died, according to the Department of Health (DOH). Although relatively less affected, Albay reports 990 confirmed and 75 active cases, while Catanduanes has 133 confirmed and 9 active cases. IOM continues to conduct rapid needs assessments in the most affected provinces of Catanduanes, Albay, and Camarines Sur, Bicol Region, with the support of USAID funding. In addition, assistance from the German Embassy in Manila arrived in Virac, Catanduanes, via the Philippine Coast Guard vessel Gabriela Silang on 7 November. A total of 244,200 assorted personal protective equipment (PPE) and 500 modular tents have been delivered to help enforce proper COVID-19 protocols in evacuation sites. “We only see them on television. Now we have ours,” said Jean Triumfante of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) of Virac in Catanduanes, referring to the modular tents that were handed over and distributed at evacuation centres in the municipality. USAID Philippines handed over 300 shelter-grade tarps to the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region V to be distributed to most affected displaced communities in the provinces of Albay and Catanduanes. “We really need to support these communities in rebuilding their homes, building back better, and also getting some livelihood support to them. Cash assistance would be important and, of course, all other kinds of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene support . Psychosocial assistance is going to be very much needed as well. We stand with the government and support you fully,” said Kristin Dadey, IOM Philippines Chief of Mission. “Our house is gone, but we’re all alive, so I’m still thankful,” said Maria, a resident of Baras, Catanduanes, who lost her home to landslides brought about by heavy rains from Goni. She and her family are currently staying in a day care centre near their now-levelled house. The modular tents will help families like Maria’s to socially distance themselves while living in displacement sites. “This was the first time we experienced a storm this strong. We evacuated and stayed with a neighbour a day before the storm, but, when we returned, our house and everything else was gone,” said Grace, a beneficiary in Barangay Sugod, Tiwi, Albay. She and other families have set up their temporary shelters with the tarps they have received. Psychosocial First Aid sessions are also being conducted by IOM doctors during their assessments in the most affected areas. Priority needs for the province of Catanduanes are shelter (tarps, Shelter Repair Kits (SRK), typhoon-proof core permanent shelters), food, non-food items (clothes, kitchen utensils), hygiene kits, generator sets, cash for work, alternative livelihoods (other than farming), medicines, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, and school supplies. On Sunday (08/11), UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines, Gustavo Gonzalez, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven Robinson, Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Moragas Sánchez, and IOM Philippines Chief of Mission Kristin Dadey, together with Albay Province Governor Al Francis Bichara, visited ground zero in the municipality of Tiwi where nearly 100 per cent of homes were damaged or destroyed by Goni. “Seeing the devastating effects of the Typhoon, we express our deep concern for the thousands of families affected by this disaster,” said UN Resident Coordinator Gonzalez.
