The Coastal Collection - Part 7
Another month & yet another part of the Coastal Collection is completed. This month I focused on the Bedroom. I've wanted to do a high wing back headboard bed for years and now it has become a reality! Also stepped out of my usual comfort zone and painted on the fibre details to bring the rug to life. I will definately be getting my graphics tablet and pen out more often to work on items like that in the future. Thanks to Felixandre I also discovered the delights of Bing Image creator, got so addicted to creating AI artworkthat I added in a frame to this set to show off some of my favourites! :)
Next month will be the eigth and final part of the Coastal Collection, focusing on the living room. Hopefully we can also fit in a couple of the items that were missed off from the other releases to round off the collection. I've had so much fun creating this large set, but I'll be very happy to finally move onto another concept! YouTube live streams will FINALLY be back on Monday 7th August @ 3:30pm UK time. Didn't expect to be gone for 3 months, but I finally will be back home and settled into my usual routine.
Set Items Include:
High Wingback Bed Frame
Bed Matress

Domestic Jason coming home from patrol (through a window preferably 🤭) to you singing and cleaning the apartment
Ima put Latina housewife (me) twist but imagine whatever song you want. Sorry this was too short!
—
Time Written - 7:14 p.m
—
The bedroom window was open, cream curtains ballooning outboards due to the warm, nightly breeze.
A smell of fresh cleaning products waffed through his nose when he hauls himself inside, catching glances of faint damp patches slowly drying along the hardwood floors.
Loud music played from the kitchen on a propped up tablet, not loud enough to disturb your neighbors, but just enough to prevent you hearing the heavy impact of his boot soles leaving prints along your freshly cleaned floor.
A smile automatically forms on his face at the sight of his girl mopping the kitchen tiles, wearing flops to keep your feet from getting wet. Nearby was a grey bucket half full with a concoction of diluted cleaning ingredients and warm water.
Not a single nerve in Jason’s body wanted to interrupt your work; especially your singing. Believing you were alone, coupling with the loud choice of tunes, you sang along to the lyrics without as much of a care in the world, especially when you believed your singing was awful.
You were his midnight songbird, that’s for sure. He adored your singing voice, even when you missed a few words or exhaled a few things in off pitch. It mattered little to him.
You clearly sang a lot better than he could possibly dance, that’s for certain.
It wasn’t long before you caught witness of red through the corner of your eye whilst you turned, brushing the mop over the same spot along the front of the stove.
“Look all you want, can’t touch without a price,” you tease after standing fully, using your volume buttons on your watch to control the connected tablet’s settings.
“Already put a ring on it, so it’s all free.” Came his quick reply, his smirk still hidden behind his mask.
You’d roll your eyes and scoff, under the supposed assumption that you were too disheveled in the midst of cleaning to receive these words from him.
Again, he didn’t care how you looked or what you were doing.
“Wanna help me with the last bit?” You motioned towards the un-mopped area by your front door.
Out of nowhere, he shifts his gaze elsewhere, purposefully stretching out his arms over his head whilst emitting a loud, over-exaggerated false yawn.
“Actually, think I’m gonna hit it early.”
“Jason,” you call him out, making him laugh and throw his arms back down.
Heavy boots lightly squeak against clean floor when he treads closer as you return the mop to its bucket, hugging your waist close once get got a hold of you.
“Missed you, babygirl.”
“Missed you too,” you smile, amused by his sudden burst of affection. You watch him unclasp his mask, pulling off the front to reveal his ever so handsome face. Dark, slightly silvery curls dampened with sweat nearly cling to his forehead, adding onto his rugged attraction you craved to see every night.
“Could listen to that sweet voice all night,” he hums against your cheek after pressing a kiss against it, trailing down along your neck. “How’s about singin’ a song for me later, hmm?”
Involuntary giggles left you when he found those ticklish, sensitive spots along your skin.
Questions on why he was home at this hour left your mind, all replaced by the feeling him peppering your neck with kisses. His faint stubble added onto the devilishly sweet sensation, making you forget your task.
It wasn’t until he pulled away, your unjustly habit of looking him up and down in his body clinging uniform made you quickly catch his mistake; one he attempted to hide in between pretty comments and loving gestures.
“Your boots got mud all over the floor!”
Jason’s laughter involuntarily grew a lot louder when you chased after him. A sight that every single cape wearing hero would talk about for ages if witnessed. “M’sorry! I’ll clean it up, babe!”
“You better, Jason Todd!”

for @nosebleedclub october prompt #11 - "lawyer's office". i did write this yesterday, just horribly later posting ^^. .
lawyer’s office
.
They fill up the room that morning, the way young people always do. Hands shoved deep inside the pockets of washed out, baggy jeans, long torsos awkwardly hunched forwards, cotton jumpers with uneven strings peeking out at the base of their sternums and hoods thrown back like inverted necklaces around their shoulders. T-shirts with large logos and GAA colours. There is a pile of crumpled bank notes tossed against the scratched, ageing mahogany desk in front of them, hazardously left to die between the three-inch-thick Sweeney file and a copy of last year’s edition of Blackstone’s Civil Practice. They have emptied the full contents of their wallets, including the packaged condom one of them hastily hid back within the folds, a loud cough turning his cheeks red like a sleety, winter day.
‘That enough?’ Liam finally dares to ask. ‘We counted it up, should be about 120 -’
They can sit down, start at the beginning. The money will be a problem for later.
‘Well, it’s our landlord,’ another boy starts. He is short and broad, the nose of a boxer.
‘Yeah, he’s a cunt -’
‘Ah, stop -’
‘Alright, yeah. I’m just saying. So.’
It’s a house-share. Cabra, up in Dublin 7, six people crammed into the old bones of a brick-layered former two-up-two-down. There is an ageing extension, one that’s falling apart, and the foxes eat the mice in the back garden at night. ‘Now, your man, right? The one on the second? Well, he broke the floor of his ensuite shower, we’re not sure how, but -’
‘Probably shagging that girl who’s been - you know the one with the -’ another bearded one interrupts, miming large half-circles over his chest -
Liam shoots him a look. This is not the right place. In the silence that follows, he takes over from Shorty - his voice is softer and more cautious. Embarrassed to be here, almost. ‘Well, anyway. He’s not paying his end of the rent, so our landlord won’t fix it. Until he pays, right? But then every time he showers - well. It, like, proper rains in our sitting room, so -’ He smiles a little, shy. There is a moment of collective contemplation at the difficulty of this conundrum, at the relative guilt of consulting a lawyer behind the other one’s back, too. There’s probably a reason he’s not paying rent. Liam further adds that he tried to talk to their landlord, threatened him with going to the PRTB, but got laughed at in response. ‘Said he’d kick us out to do the renovation works. Fix the shower, then find twenty Brazilians willing to sleep on bunk beds and fill up the place, €500 a head, you know? So, I suppose we were wondering if -’
The young lad eyes the money again, nodding at it like it’ll respond. When he looks up, his gaze is pleading. ‘Anyway, we were hoping you could, you know, write a letter or something?’
A law degree is the right to use big words on expensive stationery.
.
Liam’s been here before, of course. He is familiar with the décor, the exhausted shelves that line the walls, the yellow glow of a banker’s lamp on winter afternoons, when the sky is too dark outside and the rain lashes against the windows. There is a faux-persian rug that frames the centre of the office and the lawyer replaced it once, back in the day. Perhaps, because of the old English setter that used to sleep in the corner and scratched it, and scratched it, and probably peed on it too many times. Perhaps, because of the dark stains that cups of tea and coffee had made over the years, or because of the vomit of a baby. This isn’t the kind of general practice that facilitates yearly visits by tracking heights or flu shots, but it is still the kind of general practice that watches people grow. Decades apart sometimes, the space in which they all happily go on to live their lives, but Liam’s crawled on the floorboards during appointments before, and as a teenager, he played on his tablet with his headphones blasting in the waiting room, dragged by parents who were worried sick, and often didn’t know what else to do with him.
The first time he attends, he isn’t even born yet. Playing football against her ribs under the soft curve of a rounding belly - she is a beautiful young woman, Louise. The brightest, kindest of blue eyes - pale skin and warm freckles on her skin, long blond hair that is definitely bleached but sure, you can’t have everything. She works as a secretary in an office - it is the early 2000s so probably pharma or tech or something - they don’t call her a secretary, she says, but an assistant. Her mother likes it. ‘Not that it’s any different,’ she corrects, polite and a bit shy, her fingers crossing over her stomach. She is small and thin, a stark contrast with the baby she carries. ‘It pays well, right?’
She wants it to stop, though. Wants to know if they can sack her if she says something to HR. ‘The other girls won’t talk,’ she adds, rolling her eyes. ‘I mean he’s doing it to all of us. It’s not just me.’ There were the comments and the jokes and the ‘accidental’ gropes - he even tried to force himself on her in his office once, kissed her and shoved his fingers inside her pants. She was too scared to do anything - thank God his boss knocked, interrupted, she caveats again, shaking her head quickly at the memory. Since then, she’s managed to avoid him. ‘He won’t look at me now, anyway,’ she shrugs, smiling and caressing her belly again. ‘Not with the baby.’
She wants to make sure she’s protected. It’s what her friend told her, that they couldn’t let her go until she’s back from mat leave. ‘He won’t even have us close the office on our own, says there needs to be a man present at all times to supervise, that we’re not capable.’ Louise bats her eyelashes quickly and blows her nose into a tissue. ‘Oh, you’re very kind. I don’t think there’s a need to go to the guards for that, honestly.’ Her mouth forms a laugh but no sound comes out. It may very well be a criminal offence, but getting the police involved? It’s not like her, and they have much more important things to deal with, surely. He’s just an arsehole. ‘I suppose I don’t want it to start up again when I’m back though,’ she sighs. ‘And, for the others, you know?’
She answers questions carefully, dutifully. She has the facts down and has made note of the dates and of the emails, and yes, she thinks there may be CCTV in the corridors, at least. She doesn’t know what the retention period is. And, no, she has not told her husband about this. ‘He’d just be raging. Can it stay between us, please?’
She has a charming smile, Louise. And a law degree, sometimes, pays for the welcome sound of silence rather than that of the advice.
.
He is injured when she reappears, a few years later. It is 2004 or 2005, by then, and he is hoisting himself up the stairs on crutches out on Merrion Square. She is holding the door open, politely shaking hands, and yes, she is still working at that same job, she confirms, chit-chatting as he labours up. This isn’t the right time or the right place to ask what happened with HR and it turns out that a lawyer’s office is rarely one of finished stories. Moments in life are stacked like bricks, like files on shelves, and the spines list client numbers rather than names, themselves always a secret.
She is crying proper, this time around. Was so scared when the hospital called. Their son, Liam, is crawling on the floor now, bright red hair and freckles - four-years-old and vroom-vroom-cars-I’ve-a-blue-one-and-a-yellow-one-did-you-see-that? He pets the dog, slow and gentle - Charlie’s an old man, you know? Darren almost died, Louise explains. She speaks low and covers her mouth, constantly throwing looks back at the floor behind her shoulder, trying to convince herself that her son isn’t listening to them. Darren, on the other hand, is silent and mellow. He looks down, uncomfortable on the faux-leather upholstery of the chairs that face the desk. His legs extend, then retract - once, twice. He massages his knee. He does construction, he explains in a grunt. A wall fell on top of him. He’s fine. ‘Stop it,’ Louise snaps. The doctors weren’t even sure he’d walk.
They’re saying it’s his fault, now, though. The company. They’re saying he wasn’t wearing the proper equipment. ‘No one does. It’s a joke,’ he groans. They just don’t want to pay.
There are norms specific to personal injury in those types of circumstances, apparently. A question to answer as to the burden of proof, too. Do they even have proof? And: do they have to prove Darren wasn’t wearing the equipment, or does he have to prove that he was? It’s probably lost somewhere within endless volumes of workers’ regulations. In terms of public policy, it’s hopefully the former. It would make sense. That could be looked up.
‘Well, we don’t want to burden you too much,’ Louise smiles, sniffling. She is holding her husband’s hand like a lifeline and he is stiff in his posture. They don’t have the money to be too much of a burden, it turns out. They were doing so well, so much better than the generation before theirs. The boom of the Celtic Tiger years and a delusional belief in trickle-down economics - they had a nice house and a baby, and they were thinking of having a second, eventually. ‘I’m obviously still working,’ she adds, now, swallowing, ‘but Darren’s on benefits and with the mortgage…’
It’ll be okay. Something will be arranged. The trainee can have a look. If there’s something, a no-win-no-fee route is always a possibility. It is a route that will not be preferred by the short, balding man who comes in once a month to grumble at the office books and pick up VAT receipts, but maybe that man was just born sad, who knows? The conveyancing side pays well, people down in Sandymount have too much money on their hands. Darren agrees. When he’s better, he’ll come back to incorporate his own business, maybe. He leaves smiling. She nods and sighs at the same time.
Go on, look after yourself, yeah? A law degree isn’t a medical one.
.
There was some money in the settlement. Not much but it covered the bills and the physio appointments, and Darren was able to pour the rest into the launch of Roddy’s Construction Ltd the moment the painkillers allowed him to stand up straight again. They couldn’t eternally survive on Louise’s salary and it gave him something to do other than sit on the couch, drinking cans and wallowing. They were happy for a bit, until 2008 rolled its ugly head around, that is. The equity became negative on everybody’s lips and within two years, Roddy’s Construction Ltd was forced out of existence. It was 2011 and their child was ten and in the lawyer’s office again, the clerk passed around an old Game Boy for him to wait. Louise’s tears were now dry as she signed the papers on the desk with a tight smile. ‘Well, I suppose at least this will allow us to keep the house a bit longer, right?’
Her mother died. Breast cancer, it turns out. There was €43,752 in the estate, which her brother in America is graciously letting her have in full. ‘He’s, er -’ Louise presses her lips together. Has aged a little, soft lines on her forehead and her hair cut to her shoulders. ‘They don’t need it,’ she states. ‘He and Lauren, they’ve - they’ve done quite well for themselves. Even with the crisis, it’s -’ She shakes her head again. There is a hint of irony and something else in her voice when she suggests: ‘Maybe I should have gone to America, do you think?’
Darren isn’t with her today. He didn’t believe it was necessary for him to attend anything past the funeral, and even that, he probably only attended because the notice on RIP.ie announced there would be a gathering at the pub afterwards. He has lots of friends there. The owner, in chief, maybe because her husband keeps the business running. Holds the walls with his presence, like a pillar on the stools at the bar. No, she’s being mean. He’s tried to take on a few odd jobs in a meat-packing factory near his parents’ in Drogheda a few months back. But: his knees are killing him and Louise says she feels guilty sometimes, with her functioning limbs and all the things she can’t understand; he is frying his brain cells with weed to make it stop. Maybe, oops, she shouldn’t have told the lawyer that. ‘I dunno how he pays for it,’ she lets out. ‘It is what it is, you know? Thanks, anyway. For the will and everything, I mean.’
She grabs her son’s Cars backpack off the floor by the entrance and they get a move on. With another tired smile, she closes the door behind her.
A law degree is the sigh that follows.
.
Liam is fourteen, now. They’ve left him outside again, though for once, this is ostensibly about him. Perhaps, he should be here. ‘You’ll talk to him, right?’ Louise pleads. ‘Please -’
‘What the fuck will the lawyer talk to him about?’ There is the voice of outrage in Darren again, his arms thrown up in the air. ‘I’m the one who should be giving him a fucking lecture, I’m his father -’
‘Yeah, and where the fuck were you? Countless times I tried to ring you -’
She was the one who had to get the bus to pick Liam up from the Garda station, last night. Their little baby boy. Got caught trying to nick a bunch of Canada Goose puffer jackets off a shop - the two older kids he was with were held up for the night. Liam being younger, though, and it being the first time - the guards weren’t stupid, for once. They called his parents rather than a judge, and -
‘I was fucking busy.’ Darren is defending himself. The best defence is always attack, that’s what they say anyway. ‘And, it’s you - you’re too kind to him. Always buying him shite he can’t pay for -’
‘He’s in school. He’s fourteen -’
‘Well, I worked when I was fourteen -’
‘Well, you certainly don’t work now -’
She is being unfair, he claims. He and his friend Darragh are opening up a new car repair shop down in Rialto. She easily clocks off at six from her cosy corporate gig every day, but he has things to do. Their son gets arrested for stealing now, and what’s next? She is too lax with him. That scene she made the one time (one time!) he dared yell at Liam. Boys need discipline. What’s next? Selling drugs?
‘Oh, and you wouldn’t want the competition in the house, would you?’
He storms out. Leaves her alone to silently cry again on the chair with the squeaky plastic leather that has scarred overtime. It’s okay. The officer on speakerphone echoing in the lawyer’s office confirmed they wouldn’t be pressing charges. There is no need for her to worry. She apologises. Shouldn’t have said that. Not here. She insists (insists, insists and promises) that Darren doesn’t sell drugs, she just said it like that. There is silence. Darren hasn’t been employed or had a successful venture in years. They’ve managed to keep the house. They’ve got a new car, a Mercedes that roared down the road when her husband took off just now. Neither he nor Darragh know how to fix cars, and everyone knows the kind of crowd that hangs around in Rialto. She works as a contractor for Facebook now, reviewing flagged content for days on end on a computer screen. It pays €24,000 a year. They required an undergraduate degree on the job posting, which she faked on her CV, and she’s been scared they would find out ever since.
A broken, teary smile as she reaches for the tissues on the desk again. She has calmed down. It’ll be alright. A law degree on the wall doesn’t turn an office into a police station. Actually, perhaps the opposite.
.
It is somewhat inevitable. It funds most of the small, general practices around the world, after all. She says: ‘It’ll be amicable.’ There is a pause. ‘I hope.’
Louise came alone this time. Liam is in school. She does not need the tissues, she is grand, thanks, jokes that she has grieved already. The lawyer’s office is the bearer of bad news: they will have to live separated for four years before the divorce is pronounced. Many people don’t know that, it’s an odd quirk in the law, the state finding it hard to cut off the many, winding tentacles the Catholic Church has wrapped around it for centuries. It sucks the blood out of people and families. Louise smiles. They at least got gay marriage last year, didn’t they?
Liam is living with her, she explains. They found a small one-bed in the Liberties. She sleeps on the sofa. ‘I’m applying to work for Facebook proper, now,’ she smiles. Hopefully it’ll pay more. ‘I love him,’ she explains. But she got married at nineteen and had the baby at twenty and didn’t think it would be this hard. ‘Maybe, didn’t think at all,’ she admits. ‘He’s a good kid. He was just a bit stupid for a while. Acting out. He’s been doing better since we left home, since it’s just the two of us. He doesn’t want to see Darren anymore, I -’
Her friends tell her it’ll be fine. She is thirty-five. She is still so young. There is irony in her voice again when she says: ‘Maybe I’ll meet someone, right?’ She doesn’t sound like she means it. She sounds like she wants to be left alone. She nervously toys with her wedding ring, still at the base of her finger. ‘I loved him,’ she declares, then. ‘I love him. I always felt that if I left, I was abandoning him. He changed. After the accident, you know? Or maybe I did. I can’t save him. He doesn’t want to be saved, I don’t think. D’you remember when we first came to you? When we bought the house back in 2000?’
It was an easy purchase and conveyancing is always a good way to rope new clients in. They got the lawyer’s address off of Darren’s sister, back then. The seller loved them. They made a good offer, had stable jobs and a decent interest rate. He worked in construction and she was an assistant. They’d found a property they liked in a gentrifying residential area in Drumcondra. He was from Kildare and she’d grown up in Meath. They’d met through friends in the city. Were just about to get married. Her ring was big and shiny and showy, even if it was just moissanite. He wanted people to know - see - that he loved her. He took her on a trip to New York that winter.
‘There’s someone else I think,’ Louise admits, then. Another pause. Her bright blue eyes look up again. ‘I don’t know. I don’t want to know.’ She shakes her head. ‘He is begging me to stay.’
She doesn’t. She gets herself a decent lawyer and she doesn’t stay.
.
Liam is nineteen now. His friends file out of the office in a concert of jokes and playful shoves, an army of bikes locked around the streetlamps outside.
His mam’s good, he nods, once. Moved out to Bray a couple years back and she likes it there. Has set up a small shop that sells artisanal jewellery and does the markets. He hasn’t seen his dad in a while, but on the phone he sounded alright. Got in a bit of trouble with the guards a few years back, but - ‘It is what it is, like.’ There is not much else to be said; this is watercooler conversation, not the real kind, and the lawyer’s office isn’t a doctor’s office, and it also not a therapist’s. The lawyer’s office focuses on Family law, Criminal Law, Employment Law Disputes, Personal Injury, Wills and Probate; it says so on the website. A law degree is not one that saves anyone, it’s just a prism through which to watch hundreds of lives go by.
Liam’s lips curve a little further to one side; he bites his lip with something daring in his gaze. ‘I’m doing law. In college, you know?’
And, perhaps, the landlord will fix the shower. At the very least, right?

Chapter 7 Part 2: Videre sine videri (Seeing without being seen)
Warning: people die
https://archiveofourown.org/works/47442772
Previous / Masterlist / Next
It wasn’t until right before dawn that they made their final stop, covered by a patch of trees and overlooking a small dry stream bed. Per the path traced with the rugged tablet, there were still about two kilometers left to the coordinates Laswell had provided.
‘‘There should be light if there’s a camp there…’’ Riot commented, barely loud enough for him to hear, and he nodded in agreement.
‘‘We might be able to see better when it dawns, but that would mean it’d be harder to sneak in’’
‘‘Laswell said there were no satellite images, but in the topographical map it shows that there is a small mountain range more or less in the same area’’ She whispered, consulting the tablet while Ghost covered the surroundings, and then she looked up, trying to make out the outline of the woods further down from where they were. ‘‘It’s a long shot, but could it be that they are using the mountain to cover from sight?’’
‘‘We’ll have to get closer to…’’ Ghost turned to look at her sharply when she gripped his arm all of a sudden. ‘‘What?’’
‘‘Smoke’’ She whispered, her eyes fixed on some point over his shoulder. He followed her gaze and then saw it. A weak volute of smoke further down the dry stream they were perched upon. ‘‘A patrol?’’
‘‘Maybe’’ He grunted. ‘‘I don’t want to leave behind anything that could raise the alarm. Let’s go see’’
Riot nodded. Her heartbeat was steady. Her breathing was still normal. She had feared she would be terrified, petrified, paralyzed, useless. But she was almost looking forward to it. Her hand gripped harder her M4, her finger on the trigger.
‘‘I’ll watch your six’’
Ghost turned to look at her, and she could swear there was amusement in his eyes.
‘‘You lead this one, Sergeant. I’ll watch your six’’
‘‘But, sir…’’
‘‘I’m not going to repeat myself’’
Infuriating bastard, I know what you’re doing
Her eyes narrowed, and this time he knew it wasn’t a smile. But she moved, brushing past him to head their path towards the place from where the smoke was coming from, giving it a wide berth to better observe the surroundings.
If he hadn’t been looking at her, Ghost wouldn’t have been able to make out where she was. He was quite stealthy, but with his size, he was bound to make even the smallest noise, a leaf crunching under his boot, a stick splitting, anything. She was shorter than him by quite a bit, and although muscular, leaner than him, and she seemed to glide above the ground.
Riot moved carefully, trained eyes at times on the ground and at times at the front and one side, leaving the other side and the back for Ghost to watch while she guided him among the trees, stopping to listen from time to time. As they approached the zone, they could hear rustling sounds and voices.
It was a small camp, of only four tents, with a small group of six men dressed in fatigues sitting around a makeshift fire, laughing and drinking. Ghost and Riot shared a disapproving look, seeing how close the tents were to the trees, how distracted the men were, how badly defended was their camp, that none of them were keeping watch.
‘‘Ghost to Base’’ He growled into the comm, his eyes again on the camp while she lifted her head slightly to look around, scanning the surroundings.
‘‘Looks like they’re alone’’ Riot sighed, smirking under her balaclava, the situation was so stupidly funny. ‘‘Wind is favoring us.’’
‘‘Reckless’’ Ghost grunted. ‘‘What is their officer thinking’’
‘‘Base to Ghost’’ Gaz’s voice came out of the comm, and they both could almost imagine his smile. ‘‘Good to hear from you. Soap has gone to get Price. How is it going?’’
‘‘No problems so far. We’ve found a small camp with six idiots in fatigues getting drunk’’
‘‘Have you found the camp Laswell talked about?’’
‘‘Not yet’’
‘‘Price is here. Good luck’’ Gaz’s voice was replaced by the Captain’s. ‘‘What’s the situation?’’
‘‘We’re two klicks away from the coordinates. No lights or vehicle sounds. There’s a small camp with six potential hostiles getting drunk around a fire’’
‘‘Are they Russian or Belarusian military?’’
Ghost looked at Riot, who shook her head without looking at him, using her binoculars.
‘‘Nothing on their uniforms, but they are all wearing the same fatigues. A mercenary company?’’
‘‘Understood. Engage. Try to interrogate one or two of them’’
‘‘Roger that. I’ll contact you when we’re done. Over’’ Ghost switched his comm off and looked at Riot again. ‘‘Knives’’
He saw her nod, and noticed she already had one knife in her right hand, her left one tracing the throwing knives in her belt, tapping the blades silently. He started to notice a pattern, like when they were resting and she was doing the same on the butt of her M4.
‘‘For what I’ve seen, all of them are wearing the same plain uniform with no stripes…’’
‘‘It’d be better to get an officer, but it’ll have to do’’
Riot nodded silently again. She had to tell him. In the field, they could just count on each other, and it wouldn’t be fair.
‘‘Ghost…’’ She started, but he interrupted her right away.
‘‘I know’’
What?
She turned her head to look at him, and found Ghost staring at her. His eyes under that mask, under the grease and in the ligering darkness they were in before dawn, piercing through her, pulling her apart and then sewing her whole again, as if he could see every doubt, every thought, every nightmare.
Like a shark’s eyes, she had heard one of the recruits say. But she didn’t think so. There wasn’t emptiness there.
‘‘You do?’’ Her voice came out weaker than she would have liked, but she didn’t care anymore. ‘‘What if…?’’
‘‘It won’t happen’’ Ghost said gruffly, his eyes turning again to stare at the camp. ‘‘I could. You will, too’’
What happened to you?
She was surprised at the sudden rage she felt. A cold, piercing, venomous rage that gripped at her heart as tightly as when she revived Transnistria night after night.
Who made you like this?
His eyes were on her again, waiting for her decision. He was more than capable to continue alone, of that, she was completely sure. That he was having the patience to wait for her was… unexpected. But welcomed. She would try. She, at least, owed him that.
‘‘Say the word, Lt’’
‘‘The three on the left for you. I’ll take the three on the right’’
It was like riding a bike, her old evaluator in the 22 Regiment had said. Once you know, you can do it blind.
He had been right.
The knives had felt heavy at first in her hands, but now she couldn’t feel the weight of the handles, moving slowly between branches and bushes, the leaves brushing on her face and helmet, the sound drowned by the men’s guffaws and drunken singing. Two of them had even started fighting and were rolling on the ground, cheered by the rest.
Ghost appeared from the shadows, grabbing two of the men by their throats and throwing them to the ground forcefully, taking out the air from their lungs so they wouldn’t scream before stabbing them. Riot pounced in that moment, taking advantage of how close two of the remaining soldiers where sitting to slit their throats. The two men that had been rolling on the ground while fighting found themselves with a knife to their throat each when both Ghost and Riot grabbed at them.
Ghost stood up slowly, looking around while cleaning his knife, Riot remained crouched on the ground, doing the same on one of the fallen men’s uniforms. She wasn’t even nervous. Her breathing was normal. Like a walk in the park. Like riding a bike. Normal.
‘‘Ah, shit’’ She sighed in dismay, and Ghost, towering over her, chuckled darkly.
‘‘Got a bit carried away’’ He shrugged, returning his knife to its sheath. ‘‘You’re fast. I barely saw you move. Precise and stealthy.’’
‘‘I’m not as strong as others, I have to make do’’ She was smiling under the half balaclava. Damn, she wanted to holler. She didn’t freeze. Maybe she was not that broken.
The Lieutenant looked around again, and walked over one of the tents to start registering the inside.
‘‘Let’s see if we find anything useful before we contact Price’’
She started registering their pockets and examining their uniforms while he rummaged through a couple of the tents.
‘‘None of them have ID cards or tags, and their uniforms have no labels’’ Riot rose to her feet and walked over the remaining two tents to check inside, keeping an eye on the surroundings just in case.
‘‘Found a tablet here. Full battery’’ His tone was so dry and disapproving that she had to hide a chuckle. If one of the recruits took a tablet to a training drill they would be dead before morning, with a hole in their heads just from the Lieutenant’s eyes.
She was still chuckling when she realized something.
‘‘Ghost, how many cots have you seen?’’
‘‘Four, why?’’
‘‘Because in this tent there’s two, but in that one there’s only one’’
Six bodies and seven cots.
‘‘There’s one more’’ Ghost huffed, the tablet looking tiny in his enormous hands, and she nodded, thankful for her balaclava because she was smiling excitedly.
Time to hunt
‘‘Maybe someone’s taking a shit’’
He looked at her, intrigued by her tone and her uncharacteristically cheeky comment. Her blue eyes had the same mischievous glint he had learned to identify in Soap’s eyes.
Two peas in a pod indeed.
‘‘Go’’
He followed her with his eyes until she seemingly vanished into thin air when she reached the treeline. Boudicca, Soap called her while laughing when she had beaten the mouthy recruit. Johnny trusted her completely, or so he said.
She’s the one you want to come for you if you’re in deep trouble, Lt. She’ll bulldoze anything in her path to get to you. She demolished a prison wing once to get me out.
You trust her, Johnny?
With my life and without doubt, Simon
He trusted his friend’s judgement. Now, if only she did.
Ghost was still trying to unlock the tablet when she appeared among the trees, pushing a terrified man, one of her knives threatening his throat. His uniform was different, with an insignia on his chest, but no stripes whatsoever. If the man had been terrified by being snatched from the forest by an enraged valkyrie, now that he was facing the Reaper, skull mask and all, was almost too much and fell to his knees.
‘‘He’s Belarusian’’ Riot informed, her pulse firm while keeping her knife on the man’s throat, standing behind him while Ghost was looking down at them, arms crossed with the tablet in hand.
‘‘Did he give you problems, Sergeant?’’
‘‘Nah, he was too focused in keeping his willy in his trousers. Think he soiled himself again though’’ The mischievous glint was still there, and he felt a warmth inside that made him confused, and shook it off quickly.
‘‘What force do you belong to’’ Ghost asked, and waited while she translated it to Russian. The prisoner started to babble, his terrified eyes transfixed on the skull plate.
‘‘He says he was in the Belarusian army but now he’s working for a private military company, they are stablishing a base in the area’’ Riot toyed with her knife on his throat, making the man shudder. ‘‘I asked him the location of their main camp and it coincides with our coordinates’’
‘‘Why here?’’ He waited again while she spoke to the man.
‘‘The mountain is an old soviet base from before the Cold War. They are using it to store weaponry…’’ She looked troubled for a moment. ‘‘He says that tablet you’re holding should have photos and intel, they weren’t supposed to take it to the field but they wanted to play music… We found the idiots of the group it seems.’’
‘‘What’s the matter?’’
‘‘He said… Donny told them to not go out and that he should have listened… the password is 664455’’
Ghost typed the password and grunted in approval when the tablet unlocked, starting to browse the folders.
‘‘We’re taking this, it seems he’s telling the truth with the photos, there’s even videos…’’ He clicked on the last one, it was a video of a training drill with a group a soldiers and an officer speaking to them in half English half Russian.
You stupid fucks, will you ever do this shit right?
Riot’s head shot up to look at him, eyes wide, her hand gripping harder her knife and her other hand clawing at the man’s nape. Ghost tensed up instantly.
‘‘Sergeant?’’
‘‘I know that voice’’ She whispered. The glint was gone, and her eyes were back to the cautious, guarded look from before. He turned the tablet to show her the screen, the video paused on a frame that showed a tall, lanky man with a dark moustache and dark hair, in the middle of screaming at someone. ‘‘That’s Donny Floyd’’
Ghost wanted to ask who was that, but the man under Riot’s grip decided to try and free himself, only to find the Lieutenant’s fist, knocking him out.
‘‘Ghost to Base’’
‘‘Base to Ghost. What’s the situation?’’ Price answered almost instantly, as if he had been waiting by the comm all that time, and surely it had been like that.
‘‘We’ve neutralized six hostiles and are interrogating a seventh. He stated that they’re a PMC. We’ve found a tablet with photos and videos, the camp seems to be an old Soviet base inside a mountain. Riot has recognized a man in one of the videos’’
‘‘Who?’’ That was Laswell’s voice. Ghost looked at Riot, whose eyes were now cold and distant again, and her voice when she answered was equally cold.
‘‘Lieutenant Donald Floyd’’
‘‘Shit. Well, it’ll have to do’’
‘‘You knew’’ Riot accused. The venom was back, bitter in her mouth, coating her tongue and palate, constricting her throat, rotting her teeth. ‘‘You knew he was here... that's why you sent me here, because I would recognize him’’
‘‘I had a lead but it wasn’t reliable’’
‘‘Now what, Kate? They can’t get inside a mountain all alone’’
Ghost kept looking at Riot, who was avoiding his eyes. One step ahead, two steps back it seemed.
‘‘What would you have us do?’’
‘‘Riot knows what I want’’
‘‘You… You knew I would kill him for you even without you asking’’
‘‘I want him in one piece and able to talk’’
‘‘If I put my hands on him there will be nothing left for you’’ Riot snarled, rising to her feet.
‘‘If I have to call it, I will, Riot. You owe me’’
‘‘You promised!’’ The Sergeant sounded offended.
‘‘Your orders are the usual. Infiltrate the compound, find the target, and bring him back for interrogation. Confirm, Wolf 7’’
The usual. Wolf 7. Ghost’s mind went back to all the times he had been sent on solo missions to do the same. He should have guessed. In a way, he was strangely glad.
She would understand. She could understand.

A little update on my recent crochet projects:
I made this book/tablet sleeve for my sister's birthday, from this pattern by Green Fox Farms Designs. It was a little tricky in the beginning but a nice pattern overall.
I'm trying to learn Mosaic Crochet now. I've eyed it for years because you can make some incredible designs, but I was a little intimidated by it. I shouldn't have been, it was actually much easier than I thought. I started with something that wouldn't matter and made a dishcloth from this pattern/tutorial by Naztazia Crochet.
I used Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton, which I'm not sure was the absolute best yarn to use, I think it might not be fluffy enough to really show off the design the best. But I wanted to make an actually usable dishcloth, and for that you have to use cotton, and I had this in my stash.
Next, I made this little swatch, following a tutorial video by Tinna Thórudóttir. I extended it a bit and made it into a "mug rug". Made with some leftover Big Twist Acrylic (Joann's in-house brand yarn).
I also finished the shawl I was working on for my mom for Mother's Day (see the beginning in this post), but no pictures yet because I still have to block it.
Upcoming Projects:
Boho Triangle Shawl by Expression Fiber Arts I actually have this mostly completed, just about 7 rows to go. I had some mystery DK weight black speckled yarn in my stash so I just decided to make this shawl. The original pattern calls for fingering weight yarn held double, so I just used one strand of my yarn and a 8 mm hook and it seemed to work out ok.
I want to make this Wind River Blanket (lapghan size) to drape over the chair in my office. I have all the materials (I'm using some Mary Maxim Super Value Black Yarn and a cake of Lion Brand Mandala Ombré in the "Serene" colorway), I just need to start it.
I'm making this checkered bag for myself, in some Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted Yarn. I chose Silver and Peacock as my colors.
I'm making this adorable Bow Purse for my wife's niece in Lavender Glimmer Yarn from Mary Maxim which she picked out herself. Ngl, it's so cute I kind of want to make one for myself too, but I'm not sure someone in their 30's can pull-off a sparkly bow shaped purse, lol.

get to know me tag (useless info edition)
I was tagged by @wildmelon and @stinkrascal ! Thank you both!! <33
What do you have under your bed?
Here? Part of a rug and a bin with my drawing tablet, a plastic skeleton, a notebook, and a tiny TARDIS. At home I have three drawers that are empty, but sometimes get pulled open by Loki (my cat).
2. Favorite candy? (be very specific if possible)
Um, I like fudge a lot. Also sourpatch kids watermelon ones. Also Lindor balls, milk chocolate.
3. Describe your favorite shirt.
I have a lot of favorite shirts. One of them has all 14 (13 + the War Doctor) Doctors from Doctor Who as cats that are playing on/around the TARDIS. Another one is black and has two rows of three fake playing cards that each represent one of the characters from Six of Crows.
4. The last thing you drew/doodled.
Uhm, probably just some boxes/triangles that are black and white and make a pattern in the corner of one of my notebooks. Otherwise maybe some goofy little faces in my Chem notebook.
5. Are you completely sober right now?
Yes.
6. What's one thing that annoys you more than anything?
People twisting and truncating idioms to fit their needs. For example, shortening "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." into "Blood is thicker than water." They mean the exact fucking opposite. Also "Jack of all trades, master of none, better than a master of one." And "Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back." See how the full versions are much less negative? And how the shortened versions are almost always used in demeaning ways? Yeah, that pisses me off.
7. Have you ever gotten your tongue stuck on a cold pole during winter?
No. And to be honest, I'm not sure why anyone tries to lick metal? I don't get it.
8. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
Probably at my house, in my room, reading on my bed, with one or both of my cats snuggled up against me.
9. What was the single last word you spoke?
"Bye!" Said to my dad as we were getting off of FaceTime.
I'm going to tag @sammyshuno @simgerale @whimsyoak @sublimesims @wastelandwhisperer No pressure!! Feel free to ignore it!

Each series targets specific types of users, whether for multimedia, productivity, or durability, making it easy for users to find a model that fits their requirements and budget.
2. Display Quality
Samsung tablets are well-known for their vibrant, high-resolution displays. The Galaxy Tab S series features Super AMOLED screens with rich colors, deep contrasts, and high brightness, which makes them excellent for watching videos, gaming, and creative tasks.
High-resolution displays and great color accuracy make Samsung tablets a popular choice among artists, photographers, and content creators, especially those who use them with the Samsung S Pen for digital drawing or editing.
3. Performance Options
Samsung tablets offer a range of processors, from efficient mid-range options in the Galaxy Tab A series to powerful chipsets in the Galaxy Tab S series, like the Qualcomm Snapdragon or Samsung’s own Exynos processors.
Galaxy Tab S models come with generous RAM and storage options, suitable for multitasking, gaming, and running demanding applications smoothly. For everyday tasks like browsing, streaming, and light productivity, the Galaxy Tab A series is more than sufficient.
4. S Pen Support
Many Samsung tablets, especially in the Galaxy Tab S series, come with or support the Samsung S Pen, a stylus that enables precise writing, drawing, and editing. This makes Samsung tablets a great choice for artists, designers, and note-takers.
The S Pen is highly responsive, with low latency, and supports pressure sensitivity, offering a near-natural writing and drawing experience, making it ideal for creative and professional use.
5. Portability and Design
Samsung tablets are designed to be sleek, lightweight, and easy to carry, with thin profiles and minimal bezels for a modern look.
The Galaxy Tab Active series is specifically designed for durability, featuring rugged builds with water and dust resistance, and is suitable for fieldwork or outdoor environments.
6. Battery Life and Fast Charging
Samsung tablets are known for their good battery life, often lasting through a full day of moderate use. The Galaxy Tab S models, in particular, are optimized for extended use, making them suitable for travel, long workdays, or binge-watching.
Many Samsung tablets also come with fast-charging capabilities, allowing users to quickly recharge their devices and get back to work or play without much downtime.
7. Multitasking and Productivity Features
Samsung tablets offer robust multitasking features like Samsung DeX, which turns the tablet into a desktop-like experience, making it easier to use for work tasks such as word processing, presentations, and more.
Galaxy Tab S models support split-screen and multi-window modes, which allow users to run multiple apps side by side, making them highly productive for work, study, and research.
8. Software and Ecosystem Integration
Samsung tablets run on Android with Samsung’s One UI, which is optimized for large screens and provides an easy-to-navigate interface. Samsung frequently updates its tablets, adding new features and security patches.
