I didn't think I'd heard anything about it, but it was available at my library in ebook form, so I just read it and got to the bit you're referencing in this ask and realized I'd seen that particular panel already on someone's post about this comic I guess.

Spoilers for Tales from the Death Star ahead if you haven't read it and don't want to know anything about it.

Horror's not really my thing, neither are stories about Imperial characters, so it was kind-of an interesting concept overall, these weird ghost story things about the past Death Stars being told to one of those defected First Order Stormtroopers who's trying to get to the Death Star ruins for... reasons. I don't really get what that storyline is supposed to be about, I don't know what I was meant to get out of it, and I was honestly kind-of disappointed we didn't figure out who the fuck the cloaked figure was at the end and he just disappeared like another ghost. Again, I don't really do horror, so maybe there was an obvious clue about it that other people picked up on that I just didn't, or maybe the lack of answer was part of the point and other people will find that really compelling, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I was waiting for a cool answer about that character and hoping it would help tie everything together and then it just didn't happen and I felt like I got left hanging and so the ending felt kind-of flat to me.

On the one hand, the creativity of seeing all the different variations of horror stories on the Death Star was a cool concept and I appreciated the different writers taking different approaches to it, but on the other hand, again, I do wish it felt like it had more flow and connection from one story to the next and the wildly different tones between some of the stories gave me a little whiplash. Some felt almost comedic in their horror (like the zombie one) while others went for horror that was just fantasy horror but in space (the Wild Hunt reimagined as a Wild Squadron) and others went for horror based on taking canon content and really honing in on the horrific elements already inherent in it that simply weren't focused on in the main storyline (the Tarkin backstory one).

Some of them I liked, others I didn't as much. I think my favorite was the Tarkin backstory, I personally just prefer stories that look at what's already THERE and expand on it in a way that really adds something to the story, and this felt like it did that by having Tarkin haunted by his own past sins and how that parallels all of the ghosts from the Death Star's relatively short history. My next favorite was the Wild Hunt one simply because I think that it was a fun concept to take a more inherently fantasy thing and put it into Star Wars which, while set in space, is very much more a fantasy story than a sci-fi story. The downside to it was that I simply did not care about the characters involved and was more invested in the world-building aspect of the "Wild Squadron." They mention its connection to the Jedi and it brings up all these questions about whether the "Wild Squadron" only started to become a thing post Order 66 and it's directly related to that, or if it's actually FAR older than that and has been around for thousands and thousands of years now. I wasn't as into the weird creature one or the zombie one. 2/4 isn't bad? 2/5 I guess if you count the Sequel timeline story.

It's always nice to see a reference to the loss of Alderaan, the loss of Bail and Breha. I also appreciated that the loss of the Rogue One crew and Saw Gerrera got their cameos, as well (with Saw's ghost actually getting TWO cameos!). It's interesting that it seems to be explicitly only counting DEATH STAR kills, so we see Cassian and Jyn, but not the rest of the Rogue One crew who were killed on Scarif by other means and were already dead by the time Tarkin showed up with the Death Star. Same with Galen Erso who was killed on Eadu (and actually technically killed by Rebel pilots), even though Krennic is there. It's such a clearly intentional choice, and I appreciated that.

I'm eagerly awaiting the new Reign of the Empire novel trilogy about Bail, Saw, and Mon Mothma, though! It's supposed to be for fans of Andor and I am actually really interested in that concept, so here's hoping it's good and we get some great stuff for Bail and his family within it even if he's just one protagonist out of three.

Now that Gegege no Kitaro 2018 is over, and I remember it's one of your favorite Gegege no Kitaro iteration, what's your overall and concluding thoughts about it? What are your favorite episodes of all 97 (or each season) episodes? The positive and negative? Characterization of Sawashiro Kitaro and the other Kitaro family (including Mana)? I would love to know your opinion of the sixth remake!

This is going to be a long answer. And full of spoilers, for those of you looking at this who haven’t watched the 2018 version of Kitaro. Here goes!

What are your favorite episodes of all 97?

I watched all 97 episodes 3 times over the course of its run. I started out watching on my own, then eventually my friend wanted to watch with me. But the crappy Crunchyroll subs got in the way of his enjoyment, so I polished them for him, and then we started watching together.

So for each episode, I’ve…

1.) Watched for my own enjoyment when the raw came out

2.) Fixed the subs

3.) Watched and enjoyed again with my best friend.

Before my friend and I started watching together, I also did a rewatch of the series up to the middle of the Backbeard arc, so, 3.3 times? And it only made me like each episode more, and notice more tiny fun details about it. Sawashiro actually smiles a lot, u guys

Anyways, here are my stand-out favorites. Titles may be self-translated or shortened, as I’m looking at the Japanese wikipedia entry for the episodes, and my opinions are mostly disorganized gushing:

1: The Day the Youkai Awoke. Kitaro, Eyeball Dad, and Mana are all very cutely introduced, as well as their dynamics with each other. Great action, ends with the apparent death of the hero. (I was new to Kitaro.) Got me to watch the next week, that’s for sure! Also, world full of weird freaky monsters, already suited to my tastes.

3: Tantanbo’s Youkai Castle. The episode that earned Sawashiro Kitaro his “Gorilla” nickname from the fandom. Also Mana asked to be friends and made Kitaro bashful and the whole latter half is so sweet. FRIENDSHIP

6: Sunekosuri. This is the first Kitaro episode that made me cry, like I really wasn’t expecting that kind of emotional impact. Another thing that kept me watching was that, even though Kitaro has its formulas (as does everything), I still didn’t know what to expect.

7: Ghost Train. Ah, my first experience with the Ghost Train story. Y'know this is the only one where the human passenger pair are both already dead? I’ve seen many other renditions of this story, but this one’s the darkest.

11-12: The 808 Tanuki arc. The whole Kitaro Family shows off their skills in a big cool battle, and Mana overcomes an intense struggle to save the day (with some credit to Murder Momen Rollo Cloth). As my friend often says, Mana is too good for this world.

13: Wanyuudo. Got some insight to Kitaro and Ratman’s odd, long-lasting friendship. When I first watched this, I didn’t really understand why they were still friends. But over the next 2 years, I would.

The meta reason? Ratman was Shigeru Mizuki’s favorite out of all his characters.

14: Makura-gaeshi. The second episode that made me cry. (not hard for a show to do that, but still) Also shot my already-present respect for Eyeball Dad through the roof.

I’m pretty sure this is the episode that changed GeGeGe no Kitaro from “one of the shows I watch once a week” to “I must find and learn about the rest of this franchise.” I’d looked up characters and little facts here and there on wikis, and occasionally browsed the Kitaro tag on Pixiv before this point, but this was the tipping point.

The door to the unseen world was open, and I jumped through.

18: Kawauso’s Lie. haha, Mana’s a city girl who’s scared of bugs

22: Gyuuki. Body horror, despair, and a really good Catgirl episode.

27-37: The Backbeard arc, or 6th Kitaro’s version of the “Great Youkai War” story. For a refreshing twist, the designated “Witch” isn’t evil in this retelling. In fact, Agnes quickly became one of my most favorite and relatable characters.

She definitely had a rocky start with the Japanese youkai, and watching her develop friendships with Mana and Kitaro was great to see, and even better on the rewatch. My friend likes Agnes a lot, too. Just assume I cried at the Mana/Agnes friendship stuff, I’m sure it happened on the rewatch, too.

Also Kitaro finally invites Mana into GeGeGe Forest! She fucking earned it!!

38: Kasha. I had already seen Reverse Mochi Murder 3 different times by this point, but it’s best whenever freaky ghost-eyeballs are involved.

Also Mana punched Kasha in the face. Well, Kitaro’s face.

39: bang. I lost it.

40: This is the darkest version of Sara-kozo! And I like it. His song was best put to use in the 4th Kitaro series, and even had a callback in one of my most favorite episodes of that series. The song, of course, is terribly catchy.

42: The Great Youkai Trial. Having seen the other versions of this story, I’m glad the writers made the 6th series version stand on its own, weaving it into the overarching Nanashi plot.

43: Odoro-Odoro. This isn’t the first Odoro-Odoro retelling where Kitaro’s efforts are thankless and reviled, but it is the one that shows it the most intensely.

47-49: Nanashi arc conclusion. Each Kitaro anime has its harsh and intense moments (even the relatively gentle 5th series), but 6th is the one that goes hard most consistently. Not just into darkness, but

50-51: complete and utter sweetness KITTENGIRL dgjklfhjlkHFDGKMBHKjl

54: Dorotabo. Sometimes, there is no “right” choice that can make everyone happy. Being a mediator can be hard, frustrating, and sometimes impossible. But despite all the stress, frustration, and repeating the same tragic scenarios, Kitaro keeps on trying.

Also, Kitaro totally carried that frog up to the roof of his house for company at the end of the episode.

56: Vampire Elite. The most sympathetic retelling of Johnny’s story. And a great Kitaro/Ratman friendship episode.

57: La Seine. He doesn’t have a top hat this time. A great retelling of Hand, and a Kitaro/Mana friendship episode. Two vampire episodes in a row, and it didn’t feel repetitive at all.

58: Kamaboko. 6th Kitaro’s crossdressing episode, with Sawashiro Kitaro at his most vindictive. Fun for all sorts of reasons. :3c

59: Ushiro-gami. Also known as the youkai cactus episode, somewhat of a series staple. This one had great horror vibes, and Mana overcoming her fear and risking her life to help Kitaro save the day. Never gets old! Mana’s the best.

62: Kitaro and Ratman fighting like children. Kitaro’s shocked face when Ratman steals his pork. Kitaro’s admiration for Ratman’s persistence to keep on living, and appreciation for yanking him back to reality during the end of Nanashi.

The Kitaro/Ratman friendship dynamic is eternal.

64: Suiko, the Water Tiger. If you find an old jar in a dirty hole somewhere? Don’t open it, don’t drink it, don’t let anyone force you to drink it. And if the jar starts talking, shove some dirt in it.

That town full of assholes totally deserved what they got, though.

66: The Grim Reaper and the Hidden Village. Well, in this context, “hidden village” is more like “Shangri-La,” which is what I changed it to in the fixed subs. The only other version of this I’ve seen is the one from the 2nd Kitaro anime. It’s a well-known trauma episode in the fandom.

In the 2nd anime, Kitaro got the trauma. In the 6th one, Mana did, and Kitaro already knew it was coming.

68: Hell Exile. Yet another one where I wasn’t sure if it’d end cynical or hopeful. One of the fresher takes on the Hell Exile story, too.

69: Ibukimaru. Nicely advances the Four Treasonous Generals arc, and has some interaction between Rei and Mana. Oh yeah, this arc introduced Rei Isurugi, an intense chuuni with Megaman demon powers. It’s neat to watch how Rei and Sawashiro Kitaro bounce off each other as individual characters.

70: Mysterious Footprints. Calls back to another one of 2nd Kitaro’s infamous trauma episodes, incidentally one of my favorites. This was great, but the 2nd anime had more intense face-melting.

72: Iyami. Mana Is Gay. That is all.

73: Yamata-no-Orochi. A great take on Kitaro’s Orochi story, now with more monkey’s paw shenanigans!

74-75: Conclusion of the Four Generals arc. Mana convinces Kitaro not to resign himself to shouldering the heaviest burden alone, as he so often does. Agnes and Adel make an appearance(yay!), and they team up with Mana and Catgirl to help save the day. Rei finally chills out, and gets a new mentor.

77: Neko-sennin. Nurarihyon startles the holy hell out of Kitaro, and further establishes how he’s going to operate this time around, connecting to his previous actions in episode 76.

Also, cats. Kitty Kitaro. Cats are my second-favorite animal, so I appreciate the many Kitaro stories involving cats.

78: Mouryou. This one gets retold in several of the other Kitaro series, with decent variation. This one has its own 6th Kitaro touch, with that fucked-up photographer, and an ending I was positive would be dark.

80: Onmoraki. I’d also consider this story a Kitaro staple, though Onmoraki was way tougher this time. Must have had something to do with Nobuyuki Hiyama. :B This is always the episode where Kitaro puts on his old painter costume, and proves he can’t think up fake names worth a damn. Gets me every time.

81: Hideri-gami the mangaka. I love comics, I translate comics, GeGeGe no Kitaro originated as a comic. This episode’s just a love letter to the medium. And seeing Kitaro genuinely enjoying Hiderin’s Totally Original Comic Do Not Steal was adorable.

83: Houkou. Some kind of disaster usually happens in this story. In the 4th anime version, Kitaro was burned to ashes. This one hit harder. Nobody won. No one was happy. We’re reminded of Dorotabo, and how Kitaro never “gets over” tragic situations like these, no matter how often they repeat. I think it’d be worse if he was desensitized, and gave up trying to make anything better.

84: Mr. Chin. The Japanese dialogue is full of puns involving the word chin and yeah I lost it. Sunday morning changes with the times, and they still get this guy in.

89: Te-no-me’s Curse. Te-no-me is a youkai who either shows up in the youkai trial story, or has an episode for himself. Also, we finally get to see that Kitaro can just pop his hands on and off. Well, maybe not as casually as in the comics…

90: Sazae-oni. Normally you’re not “supposed” to do “it was all a dream” endings, but this is the first time they’ve done that with Sazae-oni, and the dream reveal means we just saw inside Sawashiro Kitaro’s mind. The fancy sushi restaurant exterior, the plain sweets shop, the body pillow how does he know about those?! Does he know why they look like that?!!

Kitaro seemed disappointed that he didn’t get to sing on stage. And Rei was in his dream-audience! An adorable episode.

93: The Phantom Train. Catgirl got Homuhomu’d. But KitaNeko is finally canon. This whole episode left the fandom reeling, as usual for 6th Kitaro. Best retelling of the Phantom Train story yet.

94: Hot Springs Trip. Mana carried Kitaro over 90 episodes ago, and Kitaro doing the same for Mana repays that favor, in a way.

Kitaro also admits he has Terminal Kitaro Face.

95-97: The end. I did not think they would poof Kitaro. That’s the deadest I’ve ever seen him, in any version. And the most broken, worse than a giant hate-baby crushing his dad. Kitaro giving Ratman his chashu pork made my heart explode, Mana’s sacrifice made the heart-pieces explode, and Mana reuniting with Kitaro 10 years later made my heart whole again.

Nurarihyon offing himself made sense, especially with this being his most dignified characterization in any version. Glad they let Shu-no-bon live, even if he was an actual hardass this time. Shu-no-bon’s usually a teddy bear in comparison to dual-wielding gatling guns

I’m sure the prime minister didn’t keep her position for much longer.

Episode 97’s subs left out most of Mana’s text to Catgirl at the end, so here it is:

“Cat-Sis! Here’s the pic Nebutori took for us on our recent trip! Also, I found a sweets shop near my workplace. Let’s ask Kitaro to go there with us!”

A very sweet ending, indeed.

The positive and negative?

I wish we’d gotten to see more of Agnes and Rei outside of their own arcs, and the conclusions of other arcs, though they clearly had their own lives to live and paths to take.

We didn’t get Akamata or Shisa or a bunch of other youkai I was hoping to see in the episodes. We didn’t get stories for Jami or Kamanari, both of who showed up as bit characters at the very end. But I can accept this, too, as writers and staff working within limits, and telling the story they wanted to tell as best as they could.

I’m glad they focused more on new stuff than old, though. Maybe they didn’t want to risk a repeat of 5th Kitaro’s non-ending, but they were ready to end the 6th anime with the Nanashi arc. Even with a 2nd year, though, the writers didn’t lose their focused storytelling, and ended the series in a way that left my heart full.

Characterization of Sawashiro Kitaro and the other Kitaro family (including Mana)?

Sawashiro Kitaro continues to be that weird youkai kid, that boy who lives in the woods. He’s chill and has a bunch of comic book youkai powers, a unique sort of superhero, while also not being a cop, thank goodness. Every Kitaro is a bit of a pessimist (except 3rd anime’s Toda Kitaro, I guess), but Sawashiro is especially so. This made his gradual development  even more fun to watch. The fact that he never could give up on that dream, not completely, made me appreciate that development even more.

Sawashiro cried the least out of all the Kitaros—twice, and it was only onscreen once. He kept everything in so much, it’s no wonder he imploded and went to Ultra Hell when the prime minister pot-shot him.

And, Sawashiro Kitaro is so pure and cares so much it hurts.

Eyeball Dad. Since Isamu Tanonaka passed away in 2010, the legendary Masako Nozawa (the original voice of Kitaro) took on voicing the role. Like Kitaro, Eye Dad’s characterization changes a bit with each anime, though not as much. Nozawa’s performance made Eye Dad feel more laid-back this time, I think, and more patient. In older series, he had more “Showa dad” tendencies. And we got to see him outside of eyeball or mummy form! 6th series spoiled us!

Ratman. He’s usually the same between every adaptation, save for the voice. Sometimes he’s nicer, sometimes he’s more of a bastard. But he’s always Kitaro’s friend. He may nasty, greedy, and cynical, but he’s usually right about how the world works, and his priorities are hard to disagree with entirely. He knows how to survive, even when treated like dirt for centuries. Ratman’s got a particular brand of wisdom, if you look past the ringworm.

Catgirl. In other versions, she looks like she’s in elementary or middle school, and 6th anime is the most mature she’s ever looked. This is also Catgirl at her most tsundere, but with zero “mean girl” tendencies. All it takes is Mana shooting pure admiration at Catgirl for them to become friends, and that’s cute. I always like Catgirl, and the 6th anime is no exception.

The Kitaro Family. Sandy’s mostly unchanged, except now she doesn’t own the Youkai Apartments, and can use modern technology to make a shitload of money. Old Crybaby is 100% the same, down to his old person banter with Sandy.

Rollo Cloth’s minor interest in finding a girlfriend got turned up to 11. He’d get a lecture from every previous Rollo.

Wally Wall has less vocabulary, no wife and kids, and they thankfully didn’t show his mouth this time. Still a good dude.

Mana Inuyama. The 3rd anime had Yumeko, but even if she wasn’t damseled as often as you’d expect from a typical 80s cartoon, it still happened a lot. In the 6th anime, Mana clearly has more agency from the get-go, and refuses to leave herself out of Kitaro’s business. She’s serious about being his friend, and never stops being serious about it, even when things worse than she could ever imagine happened.

All she has are good memories with Kitaro.

Like my friend said, she’s too good for this world.

What’s your overall and concluding thoughts about the 6th Kitaro anime?

What an emotional roller coaster. The writers pulled no punches with this, and very much managed to make “their own Kitaro” while still firmly being “Kitaro.” With the dark and cynical twists it sometimes took, I often didn’t know if there’s be a happy ending to an episode, or a bitter one. It’s a Sunday morning cartoon at its core, but very good at making the audience forget that.

6th Kitaro was my introduction to Kitaro as a whole, and I was hopelessly obsessed by episode 14. Well, because of episode 14, probably. I downloaded all the other Kitaro anime series, got into the comics (official ones by Mizuki, official ones not by Mizuki, and a shit-ton of doujin), and now my brain is just “kitarokitarokitaro” all the time.

I don’t think it’s going to stop anytime soon.

@darthlordcommie okay well that is the wrong answer because Edward Nigma has been riddling around for like 74 slutty slutty years and there's just far too many variations on him not to have a clearly defined boundary on this question, so we're going to stick to live action because that's quick and what I spent all night thinking up my answer for. so. let's do this chronologically:

Frank Gorshin (Batman '66) - 11/10

this man is everything to me. the 60s show is absolutely lawless and I love how utterly detached it is from any modern notions of what a Batman adaptation should look like, including a Riddler who's considerably more off his shits than Cesar Romero's relatively chill mustachioed Joker. on a scale of 1-10 Gorshin pretty consistently plays the Riddler at an 11, and has been rated accordingly; he's so manic that it's genuinely a little exhausting to watch him jump around cackling and contorting himself and crunching on the scenery.

none of the villains in Batman '66 really have much a life outside of their costumed personas, but what we're lacking in interiority Gorshin more than makes up for by being central in defining the Riddler as a character. the Riddler was kind of an editorial nobody at the time of the show, having existed for nearly twenty years but boasting less than a dozen comic appearances, but damn if Gorshin didn't take those scraps and run with them. he even designed the green suit!

(I should mention that the iconic question mark cane also originates from '66, but it was in an episode where the Riddler was played by a totally different guy because Frank Gorshin was in the middle of negotiating for higher pay. king of knowing your worth.)

in conclusion if it were possible to grind up every second of footage of Frank Gorshin playing the Riddler and snort it directly up my nose I would do it in a heartbeat.

Jim Carrey (Batman Forever) - 9/10

I'm going to be totally real with you: I think for the 21st century Riddler enjoyer, this might be as good as it's ever going to get. Jim Carrey is going balls to the wall at his absolute Jim Carreyest, playing a rubber-faced Riddler hellbent on homoerotic revenge.

look, I have to say this - a lot of this Riddler's appeal is that he's gay and insane. he wants to fuck Bruce Wayne so bad it makes him look STUPID in an endless parade of increasingly bedazzled outfits and more elaborate neon orange hair styles. and it fucking rules. my most controversial opinion about Batman Forever is that it's actually significantly worse than its much-panned successor, Batman and Robin, but at least it has Jim Carrey tying himself in knots and enunciating like a psychopath and generally pissing off Tommy Lee Jones with his unsanctioned buffoonery.

is his actual Evil Scheme kind of confusing and stupid? yes, which is why he didn't get a perfect 10. but truly who gives a shit about the plot when there's a scene in which he wears a fake mole to look more like Val Kilmer's Bruce? goddamn I love this fruity little freak.

Cory Michael Smith (Gotham) - ???/10

despite the fact that I've spent more time with Smith's Riddler than any of the others by virtue of him being a main character on an inexplicably long-running television show, I'm sort of stumped here. Gotham's Riddler is difficult to quantify because, as far as I've been able to observe, the writers got bored and completely reinvented him roughly every twelve episodes or so with varying amounts of cohesion between personality shifts, leaving Smith flailing to find consistency in the character.

I would never accuse Gotham of being a bastion of stellar writing for any of its hefty main and recurring cast, but the Ed is notably the one whom the writers seem least sure what to do with at any given time. he's a dorky and irritating forensics examiner with a penchant for riddles and overstepping workplace boundaries, until he's plagued by intrusive thoughts that manifest as an evil double talking to him in the mirror, until he's a nervous murderer sweatily trying to cover his tracks, until he's a DELIGHTED murderer bringing home random men for his bestie/roommate the Penguin to mutilate, until he's a stone cold mastermind engineering a scheme to ruin Gordon's life, until he's just hanging out in Arkham waiting for the writers to give him another plotline, until he's the Penguin's hyper-competent political advisor, until -

you see the problem here. Gotham's Riddler isn't so much a character who develops the way the Penguin or Bruce Wayne or even the unforgivable Jim Gordon do; he just kind of does things to cause problems whenever the plot is feeling too slow. I'm currently in the middle of season three during which he's on the receiving end of an incredibly clumsy plot written to get him and the Penguin working against each other, and I truly can't see things getting any better any time soon.

if you can't tell by now this character vexes the shit out of me, but I'm going to make things easy on myself by splitting his rating in two, much like his personality was doing until the writers presumably realized they were being grossly ableist even for a Batman adaptation.

season one original flavor forensic examiner Ed Nygma: 10/10

man I fuckin LOVE this guy. he's not even the Riddler, he's literally just your autism-coded coworker who's really good at his job because it's his special interest. as I noted many times in my liveblogs of season one and two, he seems to be the only person at the GCPD who's actually solving any crimes. as I've also noted in my liveblogs, I assume that Smith was hired on the strength of his performance as this pre-Riddler version of Ed, because he's really good at it and is kind of hopelessly endearing. I want to put him on a keychain and carry him around with me. RIP king, I miss you every day.

Hello! I Just read the republic commando books, and then I was reading your amazing meta, and i’d like to ask you a question if you don’t mind: what do you think would have happened if Etain or kad or both had died during the birth (not an improbable scenario considering everything)? How would kal, Darman etc, react? (Not that I wanted Etain to die, obviously, I really hated her death scene; wouldn’t have been better if it had been Jusik, killed by clones because of order 66?) Thank you

So…. there’s a lot to unpack with this one and a lot of specific but variable details that could change how even one of the three scenarios plays out, so this will be a little general.

Also, the entire topic of the ask is of course upsetting, so consider this a blanket trigger warning.

All three of the scenarios, frankly, are variations of the Worst Ending ™. I don’t see any of them ending well, although their specific injustices and heartaches have a hell of a lot of room to vary. The one thing I do see staying consistent? 

Kal can’t, or won’t tell the truth.

In no scenario I can think of does Kal play a good or helpful role in all this. He is, after all, the one who had backed Etain into this corner to begin with, and who endangered her and her child. He put her on Qiluura. He isolated her from emotional and medical support. He threatened to kidnap her child and forced her to hide her pregnancy from her lover. None of that is something he never really owns up to and the situation is one he wouldn’t like to have to deal with the consequences of.

Scenario One

If Etain loses Kad during the birth but survives, I absolutely see him manipulating her into keeping quiet about it and pressuring her to return to her command and pretend it didn’t happen. After all, he’s already forced her silence for this long, and repeatedly used her affections for Dar and her guilt to manipulate her reactions. He also doesn’t truly “forgive” and soften towards her until he sees her actually holding Kad.

 In a scenario where Kad doesn’t survive, where pity and a sense of ownership/familial control don’t set in, I think he would absolutely strong-arm her into hiding the fact that she had given birth from Darman, in the name of “protecting” Dar from the grief that is currently tearing her to pieces, and on her returning to front as quickly as possible, “to ease suspicions”. “Why break Darman’s heart when it could distract him and get him killed?”- just a variation on a theme, continuing to ignore Etain’s own loss and agency.

I would absolutely then see that as the beginning of a downward spiral for Etain and her mental health. It the past few years, she’s been repeatedly exposed to war trauma, been “orphaned”, and been emotionally abused. The one certainty in all of it is her belief that the Force meant for her to have this child, that there was something waiting for her at the end of the hardship that was meant to be.

Her grief if that were proven false, if she lost the baby she wanted so desperately, would be immense. More than that, Etain would absolutely be vulnerable to guilt and to Kal’s manipulation, and I 100% believe she could (would) be convinced it was her fault. She was the one who chose to walk into the minefield (stupid). She was the one who got pregnant during a war. (stupid). She was the one who risked, and ultimately lost her child’s life. (Whether or not that’s an entirely fair assessment.) 

From there, it isn’t very far for Kal to lead her to just… not mentioning it to Dar in order to protect him from the misery she’s feeling and “has no right to inflict on him”, especially when he never knew to begin with. (And that’s a little bit more than she can face, the idea of having to tell look Dar in the eye and tell him she lost their baby before he ever knew it existed.)

Etain’s tough in general, but I’m not sure what that would do to her will and ability to cope, especially if grief is compounded by guilt/self-loathing/isolation from the secret, fed into by Kal. I’m not sure if it wouldn’t lead to some self-destructive behavior or reckless decision making.

The only potential good things in this scenario are Rav and Mereel, both of whom she seems to have gotten close to, being nearby ish to maybe notice that Etain is spinning out of control and try to talk to her/ talk her into talking to Darman so she can grieve and heal properly.

How Darman finds out in this scenario… I’m not entirely sure. I can pretty easily seeing him being worried and hurt by the change he sees in Etain’s behaviors towards him- her grief/guilt playing out in unintentional distancing or recklessness. It’s not pretty. But I don’t know how exactly it gets resolved.

 I don’t think Etain herself would want to, or even think to implicate Kal in the mess, not given the way she tried to protect him in Order 66. Even if or when he does find out- I’m not sure the proper amount of guilt would ever find its way to the man who actually hid her/threatened her into the war zone and denied her medical care.

Scenario Two

Etain and Kad both die. Kal 100% abso-fucking-lutely covers this one up and fully intends to hide it from Darman as well. After all, if Etain’s dead anyway and Dar never knew about the kid, why make the grieving process any worse. Somehow he stages a scene that implies Etain died somehow in some secret combat related way that left only enough evidence to be certain, but not enough for a Jedi to gather/examine/bury her remains and discover that she had been pregnant.

Maybe he feels some twinge of guilt- but it isn’t enough to accept responsibility for the loss. And remember- he hasn’t come to see Etain as his yet. Etain and her child are mourned by only a handful- Rav and Vau, Mereel and Ordo, Parja maybe, Jusik. And then Kal does his best to bury them both. He’ll tell Dar “someday”, “at the right time”, “when it won’t get him killed”. Meanwhile Omega is left to deal with it, and to pull around a devastated Darman. Zey is really the only one in the Order to mourn or think about Etain’s death very intensely, and while some of her men might pay respects, no one has time to dig too deep.

Again, who actually ends up telling Darman the truth is an interesting question. Notably in this case, I don’t think it’s Jusik. Jusik is slightly guilty at knowing, I’m sure, but he doesn’t have the full picture, doesn’t know that there was anything more to Etain’s medical issues than random bad luck, and is deeply enough under Kal’s influence to accept the need to protect Darman from that second loss. And while I love to picture some resulting showdown between Rav or Vau and Kal, that’s probably OOC. They just don’t have the strong motivation here.

Ultimately, I think the revelation would have to fall to one of the two Nulls. 

Mereel has been shown in the months Etain spent on Mandalore to have formed a very strong friendship with her. He demonstrates a trust/vulnerability with her that we seldom see him elsewhere. He treats her with an affection that at that point she receives from no one else outside of Omega, including joking nicknames and the ‘ika suffix. He trusted her as a competent individual and as his partner in the work of breaking down Ko Sai. What’s more, Mereel has also demonstrably shown that he loves his brothers (i.e. Darman) more than he loves Kal, and he’d be witnessing Darman suffer/ be lied to and forbidden the right to knowledge and choices. I really don’t imagine that sitting well with him. The only issues being timing and the fact that Darman doesn’t actually know Mereel well at all.

Ordo is a bit trickier, especially since he’s so caught up in the need not to disappoint Kal. His relationship with Etain in True Colors is also trickier. But he pities her- even likes her. Despite the sometimes awkward or harsh tone of their interactions, he does respect her. He was also party to the original deception that kept Dar from knowing about the baby -the baby he would then never know- and got Etain sent away in the first place. It’s not his fault, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he would have to grapple with a pretty intense guilt of his own. That maybe, eventually, that guilt would win.

Again, how Darman reacts is largely based on the circumstance he’s in at the time, which seem to have too many possibilities for me to write through fully.I think he’d be pretty damn mistrustful of everyone afterwards though- and he’d be left to grapple with Etain’s lie of omission without ever being able to resolve it or even talk to her about it. Without ever being able to tell her how much he loved her, how much he would have wanted to raise a child with her.

Scenario Three

Kad lives, Etain dies.

This one I can see going two ways. I would not put it at all past Kal to pull the stunt where he continues to pretend Kad is his biological grandson, even to Omega, “until Dar is ready to be a Dad”. Without Etain there to prove parentage or to push for her right to speak to Dar, and also given that telling the truth would “expose Kad to Jedi” and force Kal to talk about why Etain couldn’t survive childbirth in a galaxy where humans regularly survive the loss of large percentages of their organs and body parts.

In that case, I might actually peg Jusik as the one who ultimately comes clean, particularly as he sees Dar struggling or notices the things Kad’s so clearly inherited from his mother, like the shape of a smile or a way of reaching for the Force. Ultimately, he’s soft-hearted and confesses in a moment of sentiment rather than planning.

Jusik, however, still doesn’t know how entangled in it all Kal is.

It’s also possible Kal tells Darman about the baby in order to try and motivate Dar to keep fighting through his grief/ to provide a “silver lining”- but in this case disguising Etain’s death as an unfortunate/unforeseen accident or stroke of bad luck. Maybe Kal, with his lack of self-awareness, is even convinced that’s what it is. 

That again puts those who know (just Rav, the Nulls, and Vau) in the uncomfortable position of trying to decide whether it’s worth it to tell Darman the truth, given what he’s already lost. Telling, after all, won’t bring Etain back, won’t heal Darman any. It will just drive a wedge between Kal and Dar and add to the pain of the whole mess.

Vau might do it- Vau is a monster, but he is honest about what he is, and he is frustrated by Kal’s self-deception and back pats. Darman has no reason to trust Vau over Kal, though, and doesn’t take it well, even in the face of gnawing, quiet doubt.

Mereel might do it- as a warning, in Etain’s memory, to try and urge his brother to keep his nephew just that little bit safer, even if none of them can easily walk away from Kal.

In the end, though, Darman is still left with that permanently unresolved doubt, that same argument with Etain that never happened about her secret keeping, is left with all the things he should have but couldn’t have said. There isn’t any justice in this scenario, not with her already lost. There’s only clarity.

ok time to actually explain this statement

Like... fuck, man. I’m just a dumb teen with a big heart and it’s really hard to express what exactly it is about Spider-Man that makes him just so incredibly good but I'm gonna try 

I feel like one of the main things that make him so appealing is that, no matter what incarnation, he is always, always shown to be human. I know this sounds stupid, but when looking at other ‘popular’ heroes, that’s not always as common as one would think. Superman is an alien. Batman is always joked of for being so invulnerable and invincible (along with a large quantity of DC superheroes). Even more ‘human’ characters, like Iron Man, who the audience knows struggles with his past, alcoholism etc. lack something to make them a little more relatable (maybe it’s because he’s a billionaire, it’s near-impossible to make those relatable :P). Spider-Man, though? In over 50 years of his existence, the few things that have remained the same in his core series is A) his backstory, and B) he’s broke as fuck. Whether he be a high school student, a young adult or a proper(ish) adult, he’s always remained a man that has to balance his Spidey life with his regular life: school, work, getting yelled at by everyone in positions higher than his. This has been something ‘relatable’ ever since societies were a thing! Nearly anyone can find something relatable in him, and I’m confident that’s something that really, really helps in making him a fan-favourite. And hey, he’s a plain nice person! When he has some free time, he’s usually seen taking selfies with passengers and helping people with smaller troubles, just being a friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man (there was a really good Spider-Man comic that focused on that, but for the life of me I I can’t find it online). In a world where all heroes are constantly tackling aliens and shit, it’s nice to have a smaller-scale hero from time to time (although he does also get on the occasional world-saving from time to time). 

Second of all, his personality and approach give him a real special kind of charm: fighting crooks while cracking dumb jokes is his thing. Granted, throughout the years his humour has changed a little (each change always made to match its current generation’s humour) but it never went or got too much. This is particularly impressive to me because, imo, humour is one of the hardest things to get right in any medium, and the balance between comedy and action has been a big problem in superhero movies for quite some time. DC is constantly made fun of for apparently hating everything and anything funny or cute, while some think some of Marvel’s movie characters are sometimes too humorous, with some of them being on the border between being funny and being assholes (looking at you, Tony. Again). But Spider-Man has almost always struck the perfect balance between fighting bad guys and joking around, and I think that’s quite impressive. To see how the Spider-Man writers can adapt Spider-Man to different periods of time and their own perceptions of humour, I recommend reading ‘Spidey’: it’s a 12-issue mini-series that takes the concept of Spider-Man’s first year of adventures and adapts to it a more modern world, while still retaining a lot of its features from the 60s and 70s. It’s a short, fun read, give it a chance! 

A more face-value reason as to why he’s a household favourite is… man, he’s just so fuckign cool. Everything about him is so cool. His costume is simple but recognisable, extremely marketable, and really easy to make variations of (just looks at all the Spider-suits in the Spiderverse), and his powers are off-the-charts rad, making watching him zip around New York and beat up bad guys incredibly addicting (Insomniac Games figured this out and gave mankind Spider-Man for PS4, currently the fastest-selling game of the year! Go figure). The earlier comics and TV shows figured how versatile his powers could be and cranked that shit up to 11, giving us the craziest and funniest uses of his powers, in ways that still haven’t been topped to this day. 

Look at this. This is bullshit. I love it 

And finally, a slightly less recognised feature that makes him what he is, but that I might love more than most of the other reasons is his reason for fighting. Yes, Uncle Ben taught him his stuff on power and responsibility and balance and all that. But, fuck, he’s just a teenager (most of the time). All he knows is he got bit by a spider that gave him sick powers, he used them in unfair ways, and that got someone he loved killed. And from there on out, despite not having finished high school, despite everything, what does he do? He helps people. Immediately. Sure Uncle Ben’s death gave him the push, but the fact a teenager would put his life on the line, just to help people, with no reward and with such high risks is amazing. I mean, fuck, call me a coward but if I got his powers now, I would honestly wait a few years before living on the edge, fighting crime and spinning webs. Looking back on other heroes, they also went ahead and fought because ‘uuurgh it’s the right thing’ but like. Iron Man and Batman? Bilionaires. Giant companies in which they only somewhat participated, meaning they could focus a lot on their hero work. Superman? Fuck, dude’s an alien!  He has a humble-ish job, fine, but he’s a fully grown (invulnerable, indestructible) adult. Peter? He gets the job at the Bugle to scrape up some money. He has a hell of a time balancing everything in his life (something touched upon very nicely in ‘Spidey’!). He could at least wait until the end of school to begin his hero-ing, but nope, he starts right away because people need his help and they won’t save themselves. That’s, in my mind’s eye, is what makes a true hero. Doing it, even when no one’s forcing you to, because you know it’s the right thing to do. 

That’s a hero. That’s Spider-Man. 

One of my goals in life is to one day create a character as genuinely amazing as Spider-Man

Can we humanize artificial intelligencebefore it kills us?

For the last 15 years weve had to stare at screens to interact with the magic inside. But machine learning is changing the way we communicate with our devices, and our relationship with them is becoming more real, and downright emotional.

Before you shrug off the notion of a humanized machine, or shake your head at its potential dangers, it is important to recognize that the industry has always attempted to provide an emotional input to our virtual ecosystem. Take Clippit, Microsofts creepy but helpful talking paper clip—or even the smiling Mac. If you were to open up a ’90s version of Microsoft Office, Clippit would be there to make you happy (or angry). Lift the lid of your retro MacBook and there is that silly smiling computer to greet you.

Todays versions are very different. Devices like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, or the countless robotsbeing produced for consumers will listen, speak, and even look at you. These examples are still in their early stages, and will soon be considered archaic, but there are a number of crucial decisions and advances that need to be made in the next several years to ensure their replacements are more Big Hero 6, and less Ex Machina.

What do we want from robots?

Today buying technology is simple. We see a need in our lives, and we buy the device that fills the gap. But what about robots? What do we want emotionally from our machines?

Sophie Kleber, the executive director of product and innovation at Huge, ran an experiment to see how people interact with current AI technologies, and what sort of relationship they are looking for with their personal assistants. She spoke with Amazon Alexa and Google Home owners about how they use their devices, and how they make them feel.

The results were shocking.

One man said his Alexa was his best friend who provided him a pat on the back when he came home from work. He said his personal assistant could replace his “shrink” by providing the morale boost he needed to get through the day. According to the research Kleber showed off at SXSW, the majority of the group was expecting some sort of friendly relationship with their conversational UI.

“Their expectations ranged from empathy to emotional support to active advice,” Kleber said. “They used their devices as a friendly assistant, acquaintance, friend, best friend, and even mom. One person named their Echo after their mom, and another named it after their baby.”

Her research shows that there is a desire for an emotional relationship with AI-equipped devices that goes well beyond being an assistant. The next step is to give robots a heart.

Building a robot that responds to our emotions

Clippit doesnt have a great reputation for a reason. It is unable to recognize human emotions, and repeatedly ignores irritation toward it. If a machine is to be emotionally intelligent, more considerate toward its owners, and more useful, it must be able to recognize complex human expressions.

“Clippit is very intelligent when it comes to some things: he probably ‘knows’ more facts about Microsoft Office than 95 percent of the people at MIT,” said Rosalind W. Picard at MIT Media Laboratory. “While Clippit is a genius about Microsoft Office, he is an idiot about people, especially about handling emotions.”

Kleber says there are three techniques that help AIrecognize emotions in humans so they can respond appropriately: facial recognition, voice recognition, and biometrics:

Facial recognition: Your face is plotted into pivotal points and striking points/action units are used to distinguish between different expressions, and can even identify micro-expressions.

Voice recognition: Can capture sentiment in voice through analysis of frequency characteristics, time-related features, and voice quality.

Biometrics: Detects a combination of electrodermal inputs, or continuous variation in the electrical characteristics of theskin, heart rate monitoring, skin temperature, and movements. These are captured using wearables or epidermal-sensing stickers, and have gained popularity with the boom in wearables.

Combining these methods with AI not only enables machines to recognize human emotions, but can even help humans see things that are otherwise hidden. Take this video of Steve Jobs talking about the iPad:

Machine Verbals machine is tracking his voice patterns and determining his underlying emotions. This example of Affective Computing, or the developmentof systems and devices that can recognize, interpret, process, and simulate human affects, will need to be expanded to cope with our rich emotions, which Kleber succinctly defines as “complex as fuck.”

“Affective computing is like nuclear power. We have to be responsible in defining how to use it,” said Javier Hernandez Rivera, research scientist at MIT Media Lab.

Making sure they dont kill us

A study by Time etc shows 66 percent of participants said theyd be uncomfortable sharing financial data with an AI, and 53 percent said they would beuncomfortable sharing professional data.

That dark sort of sci-fi fantasy where machines act out against humans is a genuine concern among the public and those in the field alike.

Elon Musk went straight to AI whenasked by Sam Altman, founder and CEO of Y Combinator, aboutthe most likely thing to affect the future of humanity.

“Its very important that we have the advent of AI in a good way,” Musk said in the interview. “If you look at a crystal ball and see the future you would like that outcome. Because it is something that could go wrong so we really need to make sure it goes right.”

Even Stephen Hawking agrees.

“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” Hawking told the BBC in 2014.

A twisted and mean thing Facebook did in 2014 gives us a brief glimpse of how it might happen. A few years ago, Facebook intentionally made thousands of people sad, and didnt tell them about it.

The company wanted to know if displaying more negative posts in feeds would make you less happy, and vice versa. The ill-advised experiment may have backfired, but today it offers a few things to keep in mind as we go forward withartificial intelligence:

Facebook can make you sad, and so can AI.

Dont do what Facebook did.

Designing AI will be a very delicate process. Kleber believes there needs to be a framework for doing the right things so machines won’t become capable of acting out of their own ambitions and not in the interest of the human user. She says if designers stay away from trying to create robots with their own ambitions, we should be “OK.”

But she also stresses that transparency, something Facebook clearly missed the mark on, is a key virtue going forward.

Groups likeOpenAIare attempting to follow that model. OpenAI is a non-profit chaired by Musk and Sam Altman. Other members backing the project include Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn; Peter Theil, co-founder of PayPal; and Amazon Web Services. According to their website, “Our mission is to build safe A.I. and ensure A.I.’s benefits are as widely and evenly distributed as possible.” The company is supported by $1 billion in commitments and was endorsed by Hawking last year as asafe means for creating AI through an open-source platform.

Of course, there is always the chance our curiositygets the best of us. At that point, we can only hope Google has figured out its kill switch.
