These are in reverse order, but it seems I may have found what is causing the hydraulic lifter noise. I’m pretty sure that there is supposed to be oil dripping out of the rocker arm shaft, but there isn’t. I tried priming the pump by removing the distributor and driving the oil pump with a power drill, but nothing came out. I then tried priming the pump with oil under the distributor, and still nothing came out. So now I’m left wondering if I have a failed oil pump or if I put the head gaskets on the wrong way. Guess imm have to go back through my pictures to make sure I didn’t do it wrong. Ok, I got the valve covers off, and can see that many of the pushrods and rocker arms are loose at top dead center. But I don’t actually know that to do now. 😂 maybe I’ll turn the crank one more time to be sure and try swapping the rocker arm shafts because I honesty can’t see any other adjustments I could make. But I’m dreading getting all the #permatex coated cork gasket off the heads. Luckily I got rubber gaskets this time so if I have to do this again it hopefully won’t be as painful. Also, I’ve started listening to #lordoftherings while working on the car. Got through #thehobbit and am now on #thefellowshipofthering. Painting more bits. This time the #horns and some #brackets that I removed last week. Stripped off all the old cracking paint, rust, and dirt and painted them with #por15. And unlike the last time I did the prep work right so the finish is all smooth and pretty. More cleaning and painting. It feels like I spent all of last week cleaning 50 years of funk off this car or washing that gunk off of me. Latest is I was cleaning the frame and cross member in the engine compartment. Need to finish it up a bit, then treat it and paint it with #por15 before moving on to the sheet metal for the engine compartment. Taking this beast apart. I think I’m finding why this thing was leaking so much. Most of the gaskets were old and brittle and in some places there weren’t any gaskets, they just gooped silicone gasket seal between the metal. Think today I’ll clean up the valve covers, water pump, fuel pump, and oil pan and maybe paint them tomorrow.
