Snare drum merupakan drum yang dilengkapi dengan beberapa baris tali senar (terbuat dari kabel baja, atau plastik) yang direntangkan secara memalang pada membran yang terdapat pada sisi sebelah bawah. Beberapa jenis snare drum yang umumnya digunakan dalam organisasi kemiliteran menambahkan sejumlah senar tambahan pada sisi bawah sebelah dalam dengan harapan untuk mendapatkan suara yang lebih jernih, caixa brazil bahkan meletakkan senar pada membran di sisi atas.
Sama Seperti halnya alat musik perkusi lainnya, snare drum dibunyikan dengan cara dipukul dengan menggunakan alat pemukul khusus (yang lebih dikenal sebagai drumstick) termasuk pula kuas dan rute, untuk bunyi yang lebih lembut. Saat dimainkan menggunakan stik, drummer bisa memukul snare drum pada membran, pinggiran membran, atau bahkan stem besi penutup pada sisi-sisinya. Masing-masing jenis pukulan tersebut akan menghasilkan suara yang berbeda-beda. Snare drum snare drum umumnya terbuat dari bermacam-macam ragam jenis kayu, ataupun metal, biasanya diameter snare drum berkisar 14 inci. Marching snare drum umumnya berukuran lebih dalam dibandingkan ukuran snare drum biasa yang digunakan pada orkestra, ataupun drumkit.
