60cm:Decathlon Triban 520 Disc review
The baguette, the beret, Brigitte Bardot, French icons all. But are they about to be joined by Decathlon’s Triban 520 Disc? The French sports megastore has a deserved reputation for producing quality bikes — including Tour de France-level machines — at prices that undercut just about everyone else's out there.
The Triban 520 Disc is one of our Bike of the Year bikes for 2019. To read reviews of the other contenders and the categories tested across road, mountain and women's bikes, visit our Bike of the Year hub page.
The best cheap road bikes 2019: 10 great choices for £600 or less
Best bikes from Decathlon: top road and mountain bikes reviewed
The newest incarnation of the Triban 520, now without the B’Twin branding, takes that and ratchets it up a notch. This is the least expensive of our sub-£1,000 Bike of the Year test bikes, though you wouldn’t know it from the Triban’s components, and it’s not an online-only purchase either.
You can actually see the Triban in the flesh, lift it up and caress it — if that’s your thing — and part with your cash at a ‘real’ bike shop, even if it is going to be a large out-of-town superstore.

Decathlon reckons this is ‘the most comfortable ride’ it has ever designed
So, has Decathlon cut corners speccing this Triban. No. The shifting and drivetrain are based around Shimano 105 — itself exceptionally good at £729 — and at this price I’ll easily forgive the non-series Shimano RS510 chainset and Microshift cassette.
The brakes, then? No. Decathlon has really gone to town here, upgrading from rim brakes to discs. The TRP HY/RD are mechanical-hydraulic hybrid, standard levers and cables actuating hydraulic pistons. This is normally the province of gravel and adventure bikes costing well over a grand.
Another distinctive feature of the Triban 520 Disc is the geometry. Even the other ‘endurance’-flavoured bikes on test have racier angles than this, and if you’re looking for an aggressive point-and-shoot racer cast your gaze elsewhere. But I racked up the miles on this in comfort, the more upright position perfect for both long-distance commuting and inner-city riding.
The brakes, levers, derailleurs and chainset alone would cost you £623 — and all this on a bike costing just £107 more than that

(#1A/B) Since the development is to be built in America, there needs to be at least enough parking for one full-size auto per unit, for commuters, families with minivans, and so on. I tried a few different formats, including a wall of stilt parking near the road, but in my opinion most of them blocked too much light or covered too much of the lot with pavement.
Something about using the neighborhood community center as a wall with a gate, however, really stuck out to me. It feels vaguely ancient, like something medieval people or Romans might have done.
(#2) I felt that I didn’t have a good understanding of the necessary size for the interior, however, so I went and modeled a unit with walls of the desired thickness. There are 60cm of wall between each townhouse, for some nice solid masonry with acoustic damping properties. On the ground level, a 10m2 one-cart garage is allocated to each two-floor 7x10m unit. To preserve some level of privacy, each unit has a rooftop deck.
While I want direct access to the golf cart built into the house (to encourage golf cart and bike use, and for those with lower mobility), I find that it takes up too much of the building.
(#4A) As before, gates separate or join the back yards. The new 1m tall raised planting bed makes it easier to add a splash of green or color to the back wall of residents’ yards. It also offers an easier route of escape should it become necessary to climb over the wall, or if for some reason you wanted to get a good look over it at the outside.
Conversions! Either main green could be converted to a parking lot (#4B), with a row of backyards knocked out to make more parking. The community center could be converted to shops right on the street (#5B). More work is needed on the units themselves if they’re to be more easily merged or converted to shops plus walk-up apartments. One thought is to add a part to the masonry between units that’s normally pretty thick, but which is designed to be knocked out to add a doorway during major renovations.

Adam Leibow’s 60cm Cheviot
This bike gets me the weirdest looks when I roll up to the coffee shop, has the funkiest rear brake cable setup and takes up the most space in my tiny apartment, but I'm the most stoked on it because it rides and looks so good. I don’t think anyone else has the green with the 2.0 cream big bens. I use this bike for commuting, grocery getting, and mixed terrain group rides. I filmed a group ride in the east bay on it with my gopro, peep my youtube channel. I love how the long chainstays keep the front wheel on the ground while riding up steep fire roads and provide such a stable feel on descents. I slammed and bent the bashguard on a root in GGP and it’s the sickest beausage. Since it’s so heavy and relaxed, I feel like the pressure’s off to go fast all the time and it makes passing people feel even more impressive. Even though it's a 60cm, my gf can ride it cause of the droptube. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s sick of the “same-old” of the bike world and wants something completely new to break [gender] barriers with. Dope bike all around. Thanks!
--Adam
Despite the laid back bike, Adam is no slouch on trails. He has all kinds of bikes but he’s always on this one when I run into him on the street. Thanks Adam! -will

60cm:Prologo Dimension NDR Tirox CPC saddle review
Tirox is the name that Prologo uses for the titanium tubing employed on its short Dimension saddle, which measures 245mm long and 143mm wide.
How to choose the best saddle
Best women's road bike saddles
Prologo uses carbon fibre for its hull construction and the hull itself changes thickness, getting significantly thinner towards the central channel.
The stepped-down nose has a box section underneath into which the rails are bonded. At the rear, Prologo uses its U-Clip system where you can add a mount point for a variety of accessories.
The NDR in the name means this version comes with deeper high-density padding. It was developed for mountain bike cross-country world champion Manuel Fumic, but is aimed at on- and off-road.
Even with the extra padding, the 207.1g weight is suitably light. The P.A.S.(perineal area system) channel is one of the best designs around; wide, well-shaped and running the full length of the saddle.
The real winner here is the CPC cover. The tiny volcano-shaped rubberised tubes offer incredible grip in the wet and give the surface a more fluid feel. In hot weather the separation from the saddle surface keeps you comfortable.

51.3 km Outside & Frame sizing.
The weekend was dry, but only sunny in bits. Of course it did not come out fully until I was home and had a shower. It was cold and my toes refused to talk to my body until I had that hot shower. The rest of the day was a nice sunny weekend in the village.
Generally I felt fine riding and my average speed over the loop was over 25 kph. I pushed over 300 Watts climbing the bridge to Vancouver then the sprint past the cars to get to the bike route.
It was 4 degrees C. I had 4 layers on top and two on my head. I doubled my gloves as well. My rule of thumb is if you can stand still for a while comfortably outside you are good for moving at speed with the workout heat production. The wind chill balances the waste heat. Interesting thing is the human body is about 23% efficient. So for every Watt of power you put on to the road there are 4.3 ish Watts of heat produced. When I was climbing that bridge It was like I had a 1300 Watt toaster running in my body.
Bike Sizing
When I got home and had a moment I saw that GCN had put up a video about sizes of bikes with numerous complaints that they did not actually tell someone how to pick the right size.
So for all you out there who want to know the fudge factors for frame sizes here they are. You need two numbers. Your overall height and your inseam. Inches or mm both work. Most bike sizes are called out in cm.
In my case I am 73 inches, 1854.2 mm or 185.42 cm tall.
The inseam is not the one for pants. Imagine standing straight legs in bare (or stocking) feet. Place a large book between your legs pushed up as far as you can without hurting yourself. Measure the distance from the book spine to the floor. Many bike shops have a wooden fence rail type thing.
My inseam is 33.5 inches or 851 mm or 85.1 cm.
99% of riders will choose a frame based on those numbers.
First method your height divided by 3. For me that is 62 cm bike or extra large.
Second method is 2/3 your inseam or for me 57 cm or large.
Third method is your inseam in mm minus 270mm 851-270=581 (58cm)
Once you have the frame size you need to establish the height of the seat from the pedals. A method from Greg Lemond (the last American to Win the TDF without PEDs) is to take 88.6% of your inseam as the distance from the center of the cranks to the seat. For me that is 752mm.
The simple method is to sit on the bike and put your heel on the pedal at 6:00 and have a dead straight leg.
I have two bikes one is a 60cm and the other is 58cm. I have adjusted the seat using the heel strike method and it is within a mm of Lemond’s factor.
There are a few more adjustments to do once you have a frame size.
First is the fore and aft location of the saddle. That is a debate point in professional bike fitting who like to use protractors and motion capture video. The simple method is to sit on the bike with one pedal at 3:00 and drop a plumb bob from the notch below the kneecap which should be exactly over the pivot of the pedal. Adjust the seat until it is so, or a compromise for each side.
Next is the distance for the handlebars from the steering tube. For most that is a specific part called the “stem”, I have a long torso for my height so I have a 120mm stem on both my bikes. The stem is easy to change. My 60cm bike came with a 110 so I swapped it for a longer one. The way to measure this is stupid simple. Place your hands on the shifter hoods arms comfortably straight and look for the front axle. If it is visually blocked by the handlebar you got it right.
There are a couple more fiddles that are for comfort. The height of the handlebars is set by spacers and by the vertical angle of the stem. Higher is for comfort and endurance, lower is for speed and discomfort. Mine is set as low as the frame allows but is still relatively upright.
Professionals and racers (and triathletes) typically have undersize frames so they can get in a very low crouch. Getting your spine parallel to the ground makes for minimum drag. Some tall pros look very silly on their bikes.
If you are reading this and taking my advice you are obviously not a pro.
My general advice is to always go to a bike shop if you are new to this. Shop around. If someone tries to sell you a clearance floor model that is too big or small it is not being helpful. If they measure you then that is a good sign. Frame sizes also vary by what you want to do. Recreational riding (such as mine) is not racing so I tend to larger frames. If I were young and a racer I would have a smaller frame and adjust other things.
Most shops and some physio professionals do custom bike fitting. It can be expensive, but if something is not feeling right or there is pain then getting professional help is good. For me I have only done my own fitting, and I can tell when another rider is not quite properly adjusted.
So Ride on Spring is coming!

Evan Elliot’s 60cm Rambouillet
This is my road bike. I ride it on the weekends, sometimes with the Bay Area Rivendell Riders group. The parts are a mix of Nitto, Suntour, Tektro, and Shimano, with a Campagnolo front derailer just because. With the 650B wheels, this bike can fit 42mm tires—plush! I love the orange color, with its pearly gold shimmer. (Orange is the fastest color. Fact.) Even more, I love the ride. Comfortable and quick, stable and lively, light on its feet but planted, too. I don't know if this bike is faster than my other bikes because I pedal harder, or if I pedal harder because the cranks seem easier to turn. I think the answer is yes.
-Evan
Thanks for sending Evan!
