Music fills the fall air this week with Dirty Projectors, Joni Mitchell's birthday bash, a Bill Withers' tribute and avant-garde jazz. New films and restored masterworks screen as part of the AFI Fest and Il Cinema Ritrovato, plus the Cinerama Dome celebrates its 55th birthday. There's lots of food talk, too, from oysters to women in the kitchen. And, in honor of the midterm elections, you can come have a donut with KPCC on Tuesday.

MONDAY, NOV. 5; 10:30 p.m. An Evening of Comedy & Magic with Turner and Brandon UCBT Sunset — 5419 W Sunset Blvd., East Hollywood Turner Barrowman and Brandon Scott Wolf host a night of comedians and magicians mixing it up on stage. TUESDAY, NOV. 6 - TUESDAY, NOV. 20 32nd Israel Film Festival Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre, Beverly Hills; Laemmle Town Center 5 Theatre, Encino and the Skirball Cultural Center, Brentwood The largest showcase of Israeli cinema in the U.S. brings more than 40 narrative films, documentaries, shorts and TV shows. The festival opens with a gala screening of "The Other Story," a drama about the divide between secular Israelis and ultra-Orthodox Jews as seen in the relationship between a grandfather and his granddaughter. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7; 7 p.m. It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World Cinerama Dome — 6360 Sunset Blvd., Hollywood Built in only 16 weeks, the Cinerama Dome held its first public screening on Nov. 7, 1963. To commemorate the occasion, ArcLight Cinemas screens the same film with special guests Karen Kramer (wife of director Stanley Kramer) and Sandy Hackett (son of actor Buddy Hackett). Sepulveda Blvd., Brentwood Food historian Lara Rabinovitch, examines L.A.'s restaurant culture through the lens of gender. For this installment, she welcomes Roxana Jullapat, chef and owner of Friends & Family, to share her stories and experiences. The conversation will cover their professional journeys, kitchen culture and some of their fave places to nosh in L.A. The night wouldn't be complete without sampling some of Jullapat's food. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7; 7 p.m. Social Muscle Club (SMC) Bootleg Theater — 2220 Beverly Blvd., Westlake SMC comes to L.A. for the first time ever. The social gathering, an antithesis to stress, loneliness and a "capitalistic, competitive working world," began with a group of Berlin-based artists. It's a way to meet new people and take part in a sharing game. Each person around a table offers something they can give away and makes a request for something they want to receive. These offers and requests can be for something material or something abstract. "The giving and receiving happens around tables, amongst performance, music, food and surprises." COST: $5; MORE INFO

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7 - SUNDAY, NOV. 9 Valley of the Heart Mark Taper Forum — 135 N. Grand Ave., downtown L.A. With a focus on family, identity and dignity, writer-director Luis Valdez ("Zoot Suit") tells the story of two immigrant families — the Yamaguchis and the Montaños — who are trying to provide a future for their American-born children after the Great Depression. Sharing farmland in the Silicon Valley, the families' oldest children secretly fall in love. The stakes are heightened when the Yamaguchis are sent to an internment camp during WWII. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7; 7 - 9 p.m. Well-Read Black Girl: Glory Edim in Conversation Balch Auditorium, Scripps College — 1030 N. Columbia Ave., Claremont Edim, founder ofWell-Read Black Girl, a Brooklyn-based book club, Instagram and online community that celebrates sisterhood and Black literature, discusses her book, "Well-Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves." THURSDAY, NOV. 8 and SATURDAY, NOV. 10; 8 p.m. wild Up / of Ascension Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts (The Soraya) — 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge The Jazz Club series returns with a program co-commissioned by The Soraya. Curated by composer Ted Hearne and wild Up's conductor Christopher Rountree, the musical journey is inspired by John Coltrane's legendary 1966 album, "Ascension." The night of avant-garde jazz features pieces commissioned in response to each track of Coltrane's album and includes works by Hearne, Bjork, Julius Eastman, Jen Hill and a U.S. premiere from George Lewis. The festival's offers movie lovers hundreds of hours of narrative features, documentaries and shorts. The festival's opening and closing films are Mimi Leder's "On the Basis of Sex," inspired by Ruth Bader Ginsburg's life, and Josie Rourke's "Mary Queen of Scots." A notice on the official Weibo microblogging service account for the movie “One Second” apologized but gave no details other than to say it was not possible to show the film at Berlin.

New York Film Festival 2017 Lineup: 'Call Me By Your Name,' 'Lady Bird,' 'The Square' and More

‘The Meyerowitz Stories,’ ‘The Florida Project,’ ‘Mudbound,’ ‘Zama’ and ‘Ismael’s Ghosts’ are also included in the main slate.

The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced the main slate of the New York Film Festival.

The fest — which will open with the world premiere of Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying, close with the debut of Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel and showcase Todd Haynes’ Wonderstruck as its centerpiece — has stacked its 25-title lineup with breakout films from Sundance, Berlin and Cannes, as well as buzzy projects that will be unveiled at Venice and Toronto.

Two Sundance standouts, Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name and Dee Rees’ Mudbound, will screen alongside a handful of buzzy Berlin films: Aki Kaurismäki’s The Other Side of Hope, Agnieszka Holland’s Spoor, Alain Gomis’ Felicite and Hong Sang-soo’s On the Beach at Night Alone.

The lineup also features Cannes awards winners Ruben Ostlund’s The Square; Robin Campillo’s 120 Beats Per Minute and Agnès Varda & JR’s Faces Places, as well as Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), Arnaud Desplechin’s Ismael’s Ghosts, Philippe Garrel’s Lover for a Day, Valeska Grisebach’s Western, Chloe Zhao’s The Rider, Claire Denis’ Bright Sunshine In, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’ Before We Vanish and Hong Sang-soo’s The Day After.

Additionally, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Lucrecia Martel’s Zama will screen in New York after premiering in Toronto and Venice, respectively. The lineup also includes Serge Bozon’s Mrs. Hyde which just debuted at the Locarno Film Festival, and Joachim Trier’s Thelma which will first premiere at the Norwegian International Film Festival.

“Every year, I’m asked about the themes in our Main Slate lineup, and every year I say the same thing: we choose the best films we see, and the common themes and preoccupations arise only after the fact,” said NYFF Director and Selection Committee Chair Kent Jones in a statement. “As I look at this slate of beautiful work, I could just make a series of simple observations: that these films come from all over the globe; that there is a nice balance of filmmakers known and unknown to many here in New York; that the overall balance between frankness and artistry holds me in awe; that there are two gala selections with the word ‘wonder’ in their titles; and that eight of the 25 films were directed by women.”

NYFF Special Events, Spotlight on Documentary, Revivals, Convergence, and Projections sections, as well as filmmaker conversations and panels, will be announced in the coming weeks.

The 55th New York Film Festival runs Sept. 28-Oct. 15.
