I've done this exercise before, but in rigged animation, and in 3D with Maya. It has a bit of a weird pop, and I think I need to space the balls apart further when descending so it falls faster. Good note for next time! Sometimes I see people do crazy camera angles and moves with simple exercises like this, and add so much speed and character to the ball. I want to get there too one day. For bouncing balls I definitely need to work on my arcs, always. And I think it might be a good idea to actually do some straight ahead animation for it as well. Pose to pose is a bit stiff for it (as told to me by a friend) lil guy got bonked

The first major solo museum presentation of fourth-generation Navajo weaver Melissa Cody (b. 1983, No Water Mesa, Arizona) spans the last decade of her practice, showcasing over 30 weavings and a major new work produced for the exhibition. Using long-established weaving techniques and incorporating new digital technologies, Cody assembles and reimagines popular patterns into sophisticated geometric overlays, incorporating atypical dyes and fibers. Her tapestries carry forward the methods of Navajo Germantown weaving, which developed out of the wool and blankets that were made in Germantown, Pennsylvania and supplied by the US government to the Navajo people during the forced expulsion from their territories in the mid-1800s. During this period, the rationed blankets were taken apart and the yarn was used to make new textiles, a practice of reclamation which became the source of the movement. While acknowledging this history and working on a traditional Navajo loom, Cody’s masterful works exercise experimental palettes and patterns that animate through reinvention, reframing traditions as cycles of evolution. Melissa Cody is a Navajo/Diné textile artist and enrolled member of the Navajo/Diné nation. Cody grew up on a Navajo Reservation in Leupp, Arizona and received a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts and Museum Studies from Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe. Her work has been featured in The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (2022); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR (2021); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2019–2020); Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff (2019); SITE Santa Fe (2018–19); Ingham Chapman Gallery, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (2018); Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock (2018); and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe (2017–18). Cody’s works are in the collections of the Stark Museum of Art, Orange, Texas; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and The Autry National Center, Los Angeles. In 2020, she earned the Brandford/Elliott Award for Excellence in Fiber Art.

🎱 🍓 🌵🔪🪲. I reblogged the ask game from you, so I wanted to be courteous and send you an ask! I'm honestly curious about these.
Thanks for the ask, friend! It's really nice to be able to reflect on some of these things!! Sorry in advance for the super long responses lol.
🎱 ⇢ post your AO3 total stats:
Works: 2
User Subscriptions: 6
Kudos: 204
Comment Threads: 84
Bookmarks: 67
Subscriptions: 51
Word Count: 67,351
Hits: 4,652
I honestly have no sense of how these stats compare for the usual fanfic writer, but it makes me happy to see how many people have subscribed to my longfic, especially since I don't always get a ton of comments on new chapters. But it seems people are reading! And definitely more people than read my dissertation, lol.
🍓 ⇢ how did you get into writing fanfiction?
I used to write a lot of original work in high school and early college, but then as things got busy--and as I convinced myself my writing wasn't good enough to be worth it--I largely stopped. I always felt guilty about it. I really enjoyed writing, but didn't think I was creative enough or had the right amount of stamina that it took to complete a long work, and I had this perfectionist idea where it felt like it wasn't worth doing if I couldn't be the best at it.
Then right as the new Bad Batch season came out this year I was struggling a lot with burnout and found that I was spending a lot of time thinking about the show, and decided that I might as well start reading some fanfiction--for the first time ever--and felt like writing it would be a nice creative outlet that might help me recover from my burnout. It really has been great, and some of what's made it so good is actually exactly the sort of things that used to make me think writing fanfiction wasn't worth it. Namely: it's not professionally publishable.
That is, legally, I will never be able to professionally publish and profit from any of what I write--it can only be posted and enjoyed. This actually just took so much of the pressure off. It doesn't have to be perfect--it doesn't even have to be very good, because that's not what it's for.
I started thinking of it more as an exercise for working on my writing skills (things like, okay, in this chapter I'm going to practice writing dialogue, or in this next one I'm going to work more on establishing an interesting setting). As a result, I'm now thinking more about the writing process and improving my storytelling, rather than worrying about trying to make it perfect or good enough to publish or feeling competitive or down on myself when I encounter writing that I feel is much better than my own. It's been really freeing.
All of this happened over ten years since I stopped writing in college, and the other great thing has been seeing that my writing skills didn't disappear. In fact, they've gotten better and grown as a result of the learning I did in the meantime. I'm now much better at envisioning narrative arcs, outlining, getting myself to write consistently instead of just waiting for inspiration to strike me, and a whole load of other skills. It's really helped soothe a part of me that worried that I had abandoned writing, that it was too late for me to "do" anything with it, or that I only would have gotten worse.
🌵 ⇢ share the link to a playlist you love
Parasailing in Rio de Janeiro with a Caipirinha in Your Hand
🔪 ⇢ what's the weirdest topic you researched for a writing project?
I've been spending a lot of time researching historical kitchens on sailing ships and historical brothels for the Pirate AU that I'm working on. Once for an academic paper I was working on a novel that depicts a (non-sexual) human-animal relationship but through very intimate and erotic terms, and I accidentally googled a combination of terms that came back with information on bestiality while on my university's wi-fi.
🪲 ⇢ add 50 words to your current wip and share the paragraph here
The most recent thing I wrote for my Pirate AU (I'm skipping ahead SEVERAL chapters to inspire myself with the steamy bits haha)
“I hardly think I can get into much trouble here. Your crew have been perfect gentlemen.”
Hunter’s eyes glinted in the half-light of the lamps. Though he didn’t move, all of a sudden she was all-too-aware of how close he was, how easy it would be for him to reach out and touch her. “And what about me?” he murmured. “Haven’t you heard from the ladies in port? I’m a scoundrel. A very dangerous man. Maybe you ought to be afraid of me.”
Thanks again, this was a lot of fun!!

1/51 November 14/2023, trying. I know I'm not a good animator, or really an animator in any sense but I hope I'll be better by the time I finish this challenge. And then one day I'll redo all the exercises and have already learned from mistakes Goals: To learn timing and spacing, to get weighty animations with momentum and life in it . And also, just to animate.
Kinda a melodramatic post but that is what my blog is for, all my thoughts reflecting on myself and my art

The Half-Blood Giant (32/51)
Chapter 32: Comfort/ Discomfort
Hunter ran up to one of the dormitory buildings and hid behind it, in the familiar narrow space between the back wall and the hedge. He sat down and hugged his knees to his chest, struggling to hold in his overflowing emotions. He failed miserably, and the tears began to stream like waterfalls down his cheeks. He snorted and sniffled and sobbed, unable to contain himself. He collapsed on his side and curled into a fetal position. He was just so sad and broken inside. He had no energy or will left to go on.
It took him several minutes of crying and wailing before he realized he was behind the wrong dorm. In his distress, he had fled to the side for the giantesses. By this point, though, Hunter really didn’t care. He was already in trouble, so what difference did it make? Besides, if anyone came looking for him, they probably wouldn’t think to check this side right away. Perhaps he’d be safer here. He stayed where he was, wallowing in endless despair.
Meanwhile, Hannah was alone in the human dorm, enjoying some peace and quiet as she finished out her day with some homework. One of her favorite things about the integration school was not having physical education, since the human students got more than enough exercise biking all over the giant campus. She knew some students like Hector would prefer to play sports, but she was not among them. Having a shorter school day on certain days was a blessing as well.
The quiet was interrupted by the earthquakes of a giant’s footsteps, approaching rapidly and making the whole building shake. While the seismic tremors were a regular occurrence, all the giant students were supposed to be in class. A substantial whump rattled the foundation right up to the roof, as if a giant had collapsed to the ground. Hannah looked up, puzzled, before going back to her homework. Massive thumps and bangs were not uncommon when surrounded by giants.
After a moment of quiet, the disruptions resumed. Hannah was bewildered to hear a giant boy crying. Though his sobs were muted, giants were loud simply by nature of their size, and the sound carried over, vibrating the air. Hannah set down her pencil and looked out the window. She couldn’t see much, since the massive wall of the giantess dorm blocked most of the view. She debated what to do. Her chest tightened with anxiety when she imagined walking up to an unknown giant in isolation, without anybody nearby. Such an act could be quite dangerous. On the other hand, whoever this giant was, he clearly was upset and needed comforting.
Her compassion and curiosity won out and she left the safety of the human dorm to find out what was going on. She followed the sobs behind the giant building and found a giant hunched over on his side on the ground. She froze when she recognized his rusty red hair and the bulk of his shoulders and chest. He hadn’t spotted her yet; she still had time to escape unnoticed. However, the memory of Hector’s words stopped her. Hunter needed help. She could plainly see it now. Stripped of his grim, misanthropic façade, Hunter’s true self was laid bare before her, drowning in unbearable pain. She could no longer deny the truth right before her eyes.
Hannah’s heart palpitated as she forced her feet to move towards the giant. She felt like she was trudging through wet cement. She saw him sniffle and then all at once tense up. A bolt shot through her form, shocking her in place. Had he spotted her? For what felt like an eternity, neither of them moved. Hannah couldn’t even breathe. His gigantic head rotated up to her, and those green eyes, overflowing with water, pierced clean through her. Her heart stopped and her mouth froze open.
“Go away,” Hunter growled like a wounded animal under threat. His bass voice boomed into her core. “Leave me alone.” Hannah would have been more than happy to oblige him, but her soul had left her body. She couldn’t move her leaden legs.
Hunter glared at her for a long moment, irritated at first when she didn’t obey his command and simply stared back at him in a state of paralysis. As he contemplated her, though, something broke inside his chest. His features softened as the rage and hate inside him bled out, leaving only bitter anguish. He changed his mind: He didn’t want to be alone anymore. He wanted to be comforted, to hold her precious little form in his hand, close to his chest. Hesitantly, Hunter reached his hand out for her. Hannah’s nerves screamed at her to run, but she couldn’t move, couldn’t even scream as the giant fingers closed around her. To her surprise, his touch was exceedingly gentle, very different from before when he snatched her. She was unable to muster up the willpower to resist as his hand lifted her up and brought her closer.
Hunter examined her in his hand as he lay on his side. Just holding her, gazing upon her, drinking in her hypnotic scent, filled him with calm. There was something about her that he didn’t fully understand. She wasn’t just another human. She was special. She was unique. She was... fascinating, with her cute little face and dainty little limbs. He wanted to know all about her. She sat limp as a ragdoll against his fingers, looking up at him with wide, frightened eyes. He was relieved she hadn’t screamed or tried to run, like he imagined she would. He couldn’t blame her for being a little scared. She was such a tiny thing after all, when compared to a big giant like him.
He drew her in to his chest, pressing her gently against the fabric of his shirt. Hannah sucked in a sharp breath as the giant’s massive body surrounded her. The enormity of his being, the raw power, muscle, strength, and heat of the wall of flesh encompassing her, was overwhelming. She snapped out of her petrification and began to tremble uncontrollably as she became fully aware of just how small and helpless she was in his presence. His substantial chest swelled with his breathing, like the rise and ebb of the tide, and his gigantic heart throbbed with the regularity of a ticking clock. She noticed his breathing was ragged, his chest spasming from his sobs. Despite her fear, she felt sympathy for him.
Hunter sensed her shaking in his hand and held her tighter. Hannah felt a rising panic that he would crush her. She pushed against his chest, but he didn’t let go, pulling her in closer instead. She started to hyperventilate as she realized her strength was insufficient to budge giant fingers that were larger than her entire body. She couldn’t escape. Hunter had calmed down, but she was inches away from losing her wits. She wriggled in his hand, to no avail. He didn’t acknowledge her efforts at all.
“Hunter, let me go,” she pleaded through shallow breaths. He didn’t respond, almost as if he hadn’t heard her. She tried to quell her alarm and relax. He wasn’t hurting her; he was just holding her. He was in pain; he just wanted comfort. Even so, the fact that he wouldn’t let her go terrified her. She repressed the urge to scream and cry. She didn’t trust him. She pressed her hands and feet into his chest a second time, but she was stuck. Her heart was racing, in contrast to the slow, rhythmic pumping of his giant heart that resounded in her ears.
“Quit squirming,” Hunter demanded. He spoke the words softly, but his voice resounded through Hannah, since she was right up to his chest. She went rigid, afraid of what he was capable of. She couldn’t hold still for long before she began to quake again, against her will. Hunter let out a long, laborious, shaky sigh as he crumbled with wretched misery.
“You hate me, don’t you?” he lamented. “Just like everyone else does.” Hannah didn’t know how to respond. She couldn’t speak her thoughts when she was clutched in his huge hands at his mercy. He could easily break her if she angered him. Her little body quivered harder. The giant finally loosened his grip on her, but she didn’t dare try to bolt, lest he snatch her up again. She assured herself, weakly, that she was okay. She hadn’t been harmed, hadn’t been squashed. Her body was intact.
As if the giant intended to ruin her peace of mind, his cavernous stomach interjected with a vehement grumble. Hannah squeaked at the unexpectedly loud, foreboding noise. With her so close to his torso, she could hear the sound with deafening, graphic clarity. She could clearly discern the trickle of gastric fluids within the digestive organ, being sloshed around by groaning, churning walls of meat. Involuntarily, images flashed through her mind of what his internals would look like if she were inside. She recalled being close to his huge mouth as he licked his teeth, his hot breath covering her. What had he said? About humans only being good for filling a giant’s belly? She shuddered.
Hunter’s huge mass shifted around her. She peered up from the confines of his hand to find his immense face looking down at her. He was no longer crying, though his eyes and cheeks had a slight puffiness to them. His gaze was cold and hungry—like a predator. She flinched back and whined, pressing herself into his palm, but she had nowhere to go when he was all around her. His eyebrows turned down with displeasure at her reaction. He swallowed and opened his mouth slightly, as if about to say something, but then closed it again. His stomach roared a second time, stronger and more prolonged in its insistence for a meal.
Hannah cringed and turned her head away from his. She curled into a ball within the semicircle of his hand, trying to make herself as small and inconspicuous as possible. Terror clawed at her brain as she waited to see what would happen. His fingers moved and his giant hand closed entirely around her into a fist, but with the upmost care and gentleness. Hannah felt herself being lifted up within the hollow of his fist, and prepared herself for whatever horror he was about to inflict. To her surprise, however, he opened his hand and gingerly placed her on the floor. His fingers lingered on her, brushing across her softly as he removed his hand.
“Go,” he uttered in a cutting tone. “Get out of my sight.” Hannah didn’t wait. She hopped to her feet and ran. Hunter observed her dashing away with a lead weight in his chest. It wasn’t his intention to frighten her, yet he had just by being so large and hungry. He knew, deep down, she would never accept him. She hated and feared him just like all the others. He sat up with his back against the wall, staring intensely into the verdant foliage of the hedge. He was all dried out. He couldn’t cry anymore; all he had left was an empty, gaping hole in his chest, and in his stomach, with nothing to fill it.
Fortunately, nobody came looking for Hunter, so he stayed in the same spot for the rest of the class period, until the last bell signaled the end of the day. He could smell Hannah hiding in the human dorm, out of sight, and his chest tightened with a pang of sadness. He wanted her to like him. He didn’t care as much what anybody else thought, since everybody had turned against him, but she was different. He felt tender feelings for her that he had never felt before for anybody else. Unfortunately, those feelings overlapped with a stronger desire, a physical desire, a ravenous hunger. He wasn’t sure how to reconcile those two urges, that were diametrically opposed and yet so similar—both desires to hold and possess and be close, just in different ways.
Hannah felt quite the opposite way about Hunter. She didn’t want to be anywhere near him. She raced into the dorm and slammed the door shut behind her, panting hard. She huddled into a corner of the room, trying to hide—not just from Hunter, but from her own terror that was eating her alive. She couldn’t relax, knowing that he was right outside. Now it was her turn to cry and seclude herself, at least until he left. Her limbs folded in with agonizing tension until, at long last, his thudding footsteps rattled the walls and faded away into mild tremors. She let out a shaky breath and relaxed her muscles. She was safe, for now—until she’d be forced to be with him in class again.
