reminder that about 50-60 percent of the time, generic hot elf #9 started as a really interesting looking character with an interesting backstory and there's a riveting story arc planned for him, but then he got a little taller in the first round of editing and while the artists and writers are working the studio notes in, the studio did some market testing and the 10 people off the street with no idea of what's going to happen said they didn't understand what he was so they want him to get big pointy ears and maybe make him blonde and can his clothes be like a, oh i don't know, like a natural color like green?
and the writers know what's happening and begin their grieving for yet another character who will never get to exist and the concept artists are trying to argue that he shouldn't look like Link or Legolas because this is a afro-futurist sci-fi and we don't want the audience to compare him to Tolkien or Nitendo. And then the studio will pretend for a minute to try and thread that needle, but they will be adamant that it's what people know and those properties make millions every year so really if the story is mostly the same does it matter if the hot elf HAS to have a bow and blue eyes? It's the same story right?
By the time the property gets put to market Toddard the down to earth bus driver by day, sharp shooter by night with a thick Brooklyn accent, becomes Legolas copy #1,001,672
Don't get me wrong about 40-50percent of the time the writers and artists have completely checked out, but I can't really blame them anymore.

Tumblr adding polls was the best thing because it doesn’t matter what you’re asking, tumblr users LOVE sharing their opinions. You could ask something wildly abstract like “What cardinal direction do you associate with the person you reblogged this from?” and by the end of the day it’ll have 20k notes and there’s probably some kind of discourse happening in the replies.
