Jala Neti Yogic Cleansing | Mahi Yoga School
The Yogic Context:
Let’s begin by looking at one of the most important yogic texts; The Hatha Yoga Pradeepika. The text describes six yogic purification practices; the Shatkarmas. These purification practices have been used by yogis throughout time, in order to cleanse the physical body and prepare the mind for yoga’s deeper practices. The techniques lead to a purified body by removing toxins, leaving it strong and disease-free. This then allows for the prana or life force to flow freely through the body’s energy channels regenerating the body’s organs, and energetical field and allowing for access to deeper concentration and ultimately access to the higher consciousness through other yogic practices such as meditation. Neti is the first step of these six purification techniques.
What Are The Six Shatkarmas?
Dhauti, Basti, Neti, Trataka, Nauli and Kapalbhati.
A Closer Look At Jala Neti:
Neti, or Jala neti- a Sanskrit word, jala, means “water” and neti means to “guide”.
The nasal cleansing technique has its origin in ancient India and has been practicing throughout time in both yoga and its sister science- Ayurveda.
Neti is used to cleanse the sinuses, and the air passages in the head. It has been practiced using the Neti-pot, a small teapot-like instrument with a small thin spout that channels the water through the nose.
Nasal hygiene along with other internal cleansing practices consider as important as brushing your teeth in Yoga and Ayurveda. Our sinus cavities can become clogged and blocked with impurities, which can cause a variety of problems further on.
By practicing nasal hygiene using the Neti pot you can avoid many conditions such as infections, congestion, migraine, headaches, allergies, and asthma.
Neti is designed as a very simple, straightforward practice that can be incorporated into your daily routine, along with things such as brushing your hair and teeth. Taking just a few minutes, Neti is designed to be carried out in the morning on a regular basis.
The Neti pot (a small teapot-like apparatus, as mentioned before) channels water through one nostril which flows out through the other nostril carrying with it any trapped allergens or germs and relieving the symptoms of congestion etc. as it exits the body.
While this technique may be unknown to many it has been used in India for hundreds of years.
It is an incredibly easy, quick and harmless practice that can give remarkable benefits. A bonus is that you don’t need to invest in any special expensive equipment or even leave the comfort of your home to practice Neti. All you need is a simple pot.
The Benefits Of Jala Neti:
Neti helps to maintain nasal hygiene by removing the dirt and bacteria trapped along with the mucus in the nostrils.
removes dirt and bacteria trapped with the mucus in nostrils.
It desensitizes sensitive tissues inside the nose which can cause rhinitis, asthma, or allergy.
Can help alleviate health problems such as sinusitis, migraine, headaches, ear problems, and middle ear infections.
Jala Neti can help with upper respiratory complaints, sore throats, tonsils, and dry coughs.
It can clear the eye ducts and improve vision.
Jala Neti also calms the mind and nervous system which helps in relieving stress and giving clarity to the mind.
It helps can aid with asthmatic conditions and improve breathing quality.
Can help with middle ear infections.
Clearing the nasal passageways helps improve digestion and sense of smell.
It deepens the quality of meditation
How To Practice Jala Neti:
mix 1 tablespoon of salt to one liter of warm water. the water should be slightly warm so that it does not irritate the tissues inside the nostrils.
Pour saltwater into the Neti Pot can be made of copper, steel, ceramic, plastic or other materials.
Place the spout of the pot into one nostril.
Tilt your head gently keeping the spout on the upper side. Open your mouth (Breathing should be done through the mouth during the process). Water will begin to pour out of the empty nostril, you can adjust the tilt of the head until this happens. Continue till the water in the pot is complete.
Fill the pot again with salt water and do the same on the other nostril.
You can repeat this process any number of times. Depending on the need.
Note- Jal Neti should be practising only under the guidance of an expert practitioner.
At Mahi Yoga School we instruct Jala Neti as part of the Shatkarmas. Carefully explaining the significance of Jal Neti Kriya, we guide our students in the special practice of shatkarmas or yoga kriyas.
We also guide our students through the process of ‘sutra neti’ where a thick strong thread is inserted into the nose and pulled out from the mouth, to aid the cleansing process of the passages. We also instruct the other 4 cleansing kriyas for a complete detox effect in the true yogic tradition.
If you are wishing for a blissful detoxification experience that will help you along the way to a healthier happier life.
A deeper and more effective meditation.
Or to explore all dimensions of the true yogic path.

How to Become a Yoga Instructor in India: Your Step-by-Step Guide
How to Become a Yoga Instructor in India: Your Step-by-Step Guide
Yoga, an ancient practice rooted in Indian tradition, has gained global recognition for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. India, being the birthplace of yoga, is a hotspot for those looking to become certified yoga instructors. Whether you dream of teaching yoga in peaceful retreats, wellness centers, or on bustling beaches in Goa, becoming a yoga teacher in India is a fulfilling career path. Here’s a detailed guide on how to become a yoga instructor in India.
Step 1: Deepen Your Own Practice
Before you can teach yoga to others, it's crucial to build a strong foundation in your own practice. Yoga is not just about physical postures but also about cultivating mindfulness, discipline, and self-awareness. Spend time learning the philosophy, asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), and meditation practices. Develop a consistent routine and explore different styles of yoga, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Kundalini.
Step 2: Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training Program (YTT)
In India, various yoga schools and ashrams offer yoga teacher training programs (YTT) that are globally recognized. When choosing the right program, make sure it’s accredited by the Yoga Alliance, an international organization that sets standards for yoga teacher certification.
Key things to look for in a YTT program:
Duration: The most common programs are 200-hour, 300-hour, or 500-hour certifications. A 200-hour course is the standard entry-level certification.
Curriculum: A good YTT should cover anatomy, physiology, yoga philosophy, teaching methodology, alignment techniques, and hands-on teaching practice.
Location: India offers many beautiful and serene places to do your training, with Goa and Rishikesh being two of the most popular destinations for aspiring teachers.
Step 3: Complete Your 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training
The first level of certification is usually the 200-hour course. It’s important to immerse yourself in the training process, which typically takes around 3-4 weeks of intensive study. This course will provide you with a solid grounding in yoga theory and practice, including the correct alignment for poses, the ability to teach others safely, and understanding the yogic philosophy that underpins the practice.
Step 4: Gain Teaching Experience
After you’ve completed your training, the next step is to start teaching. It’s important to gain practical experience by teaching friends, family, or even volunteering at local yoga studios. Many yoga schools in India offer teaching placements for new graduates to give you a platform to start your teaching career.
Step 5: Consider Specialization (Optional)
While the 200-hour training will qualify you to teach yoga, many instructors choose to specialize further in areas such as prenatal yoga, children's yoga, therapeutic yoga, or yoga for athletes. If you feel drawn to a particular area of yoga, additional specialized certifications can enhance your skills and attract more students.
Step 6: Join the Yoga Community and Continue Learning
Yoga is an evolving practice, and continuous learning is a key part of being an effective instructor. Join yoga forums, attend workshops, and keep up with the latest research on yoga and health. Networking with other instructors, attending retreats, and even enrolling in advanced training courses will help you stay informed and inspired.
Step 7: Build Your Teaching Career
Once you feel confident in your abilities, you can begin teaching at yoga studios, resorts, or wellness retreats across India. Popular yoga destinations like Goa, Rishikesh, Kerala, and Pondicherry are home to numerous yoga schools offering both local and international teaching opportunities. Many yoga teachers also choose to travel internationally, spreading the wisdom of yoga while earning a living.

Best Yoga Teacher Training Course: How to Become a Yoga Instructor in India
Yoga, an ancient practice that connects the body, mind, and spirit, has gained global popularity for its health benefits. From improving flexibility to promoting mental well-being, yoga is a life-transforming discipline. With more people seeking guidance to deepen their practice, the demand for skilled yoga instructors has also risen. If you're passionate about yoga and aspire to teach others, enrolling in a Yoga Teacher Training Course (YTTC) is the first step toward becoming a certified yoga instructor.
India, often regarded as the birthplace of yoga, is the ideal destination for anyone wanting to learn from the best and immerse themselves in the ancient tradition. But with so many training centers and courses available, choosing the best Yoga Teacher Training Course in India can be overwhelming. This blog will help guide you on how to choose the right course and explain the process of becoming a yoga instructor in India.
Why Choose India for Yoga Teacher Training?
India, especially places like Rishikesh, Goa, and Kerala, has long been a spiritual hub and the heart of yoga. Learning yoga in India not only offers an opportunity to dive deep into the philosophy and principles of yoga, but it also connects you to the true essence of this ancient practice.
Key Reasons to Choose India for Your Yoga Teacher Training:
Authenticity: Many yoga schools in India are rooted in ancient traditions and teach yoga as it was originally intended — focusing on both physical practice and spiritual growth.
World-Class Instructors: India boasts some of the most experienced and respected yoga teachers globally. Many of these teachers are direct descendants of renowned yoga masters or are part of traditional yoga lineages.
Affordable: Compared to many other parts of the world, yoga teacher training courses in India are generally more affordable, without compromising on quality.
Spiritual Environment: Practicing yoga in the land where it all began, surrounded by like-minded individuals, creates a unique, enriching experience.
Variety of Schools and Programs: From Ashtanga to Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, and more, you'll find a wide range of yoga styles taught by experienced masters.
Steps to Become a Yoga Instructor in India
If you are serious about becoming a certified yoga instructor, follow these steps to achieve your goal.
1. Choose the Right Yoga Teacher Training Program (YTTC)
The first step is selecting the best Yoga Teacher Training Course that aligns with your goals, interests, and the style of yoga you want to teach. Here are some key factors to consider:
a. Yoga Style: There are various styles of yoga, such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Iyengar, and Kundalini. Decide which style resonates most with you before choosing a course.
b. Certification: Make sure that the course is accredited by a recognized body, such as the Yoga Alliance, which offers a globally recognized certification. The most common certifications are:
200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training: A foundational course that covers the basics of yoga practice and teaching.
300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training: An advanced course for teachers who have completed the 200-hour program.
500-Hour Yoga Teacher Training: A comprehensive course that combines both 200-hour and 300-hour content.
c. Location: India has several yoga hubs like Rishikesh, Goa, Kerala, and Mysore, each offering a unique yoga experience. Rishikesh is often called the "Yoga Capital of the World," and is perfect for those looking for an immersive spiritual experience, while Goa offers a more relaxed atmosphere for yoga practice near the beach.
d. Faculty and Reputation: Check the credentials and experience of the teachers. Research the reputation of the yoga school by reading reviews and testimonials from past students.
2. Prepare Physically and Mentally
Yoga teaching requires physical stamina, mental focus, and emotional stability. Even before beginning your training, it's helpful to maintain a regular yoga practice. This will not only prepare your body for the physically demanding aspects of the training but also give you a deeper understanding of the practice.
Mentally, yoga teacher training can be intense, as it involves both physical postures and in-depth study of yoga philosophy, anatomy, and teaching methods. Be prepared to spend long hours in class and be open to self-reflection and personal growth.
3. Embark on Your Teacher Training
Once you've selected the right yoga teacher training course, it’s time to immerse yourself fully in the experience. A typical Yoga Teacher Training program lasts for 4-6 weeks and includes both theoretical and practical components.
Yoga Philosophy: You'll study the ancient texts of yoga, including the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita, to understand the spiritual and ethical foundations of yoga.
Anatomy and Physiology: Understanding how the body moves and functions is crucial for a safe and effective yoga practice. You'll learn how different postures affect the body and how to adjust poses for various body types and abilities.
Practical Training: You'll practice yoga asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, and teaching methods. You'll also learn how to sequence classes and work with students of different levels.
Teaching Practice: One of the most important aspects of the training is the teaching practice. You'll have the opportunity to lead classes and receive feedback from instructors and peers.
4. Complete Your Certification
After successfully completing the training, you will receive your certification, which qualifies you to teach yoga. If you enrolled in a 200-hour course, you’ll be eligible for certification as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200) with Yoga Alliance.
At this stage, you can start teaching yoga classes and workshops. However, many teachers choose to continue their education with more advanced certifications, such as the 300-hour or 500-hour courses.
5. Start Teaching Yoga
Once certified, you can begin teaching yoga in yoga studios, wellness centers, gyms, or even online. The beauty of being a yoga instructor is that you can teach in a variety of settings, either in-person or virtually, offering a flexible career path.
As a new teacher, it's crucial to gain experience and develop your unique teaching style. Consistent practice, learning from your students, and continued study will help you grow as an instructor.
Tips for Choosing the Best Yoga Teacher Training Course in India
Research thoroughly: Look into multiple yoga schools, read reviews, and connect with past students to get a clearer picture of the program.
Visit the school: If possible, visit the school or take a trial class to ensure it feels like the right fit for you.
Check the curriculum: Ensure that the course covers all the essential aspects of yoga, from physical practice to philosophy and teaching methodology.
Evaluate the accommodation: Many schools offer accommodation as part of the program, but it’s important to ensure that the living conditions are comfortable and conducive to learning.
Conclusion
Becoming a certified yoga instructor in India is an incredibly rewarding journey that allows you to deepen your own practice while empowering others on their yoga journey. With the right teacher training course, you’ll gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to teach yoga effectively and authentically.
Whether you choose Rishikesh for its spiritual ambiance, Goa for its beachside retreats, or Kerala for its traditional approach, India offers the perfect backdrop for your transformation into a yoga teacher.

Consider your goals and preferences when choosing between options like a 200 hour yoga teacher training or a more intensive 500 hour yoga teacher training in India. Research programs thoroughly, looking for those that align with your values and offer comprehensive curricula. For example, if you're seeking a robust training that includes advanced practices, a 500 hour yoga teacher training might be ideal. Conversely, a 100 hour yoga teacher training can be a good starting point if you're looking for a shorter commitment.
2. Prepare Mentally and Physically
Yoga teacher training requires both mental and physical preparation. Engage in a consistent yoga practice leading up to your training to build strength and flexibility. Additionally, prepare yourself mentally by setting clear intentions for what you hope to achieve. Whether it's gaining a deeper understanding of yoga philosophy or developing teaching skills, having a clear focus can guide your experience.
3. Immerse Yourself Fully
To get the most out of your training, immerse yourself fully in the program. This means attending all classes, participating in workshops, and engaging with fellow trainees. If you are in a yoga teacher training course in Pune or participating in a 100 hour yoga teacher training online, make sure to create a conducive environment for learning, free from distractions. Embrace the challenges and joys of the training process, and remain open to new experiences.

Consistency is key to making the most of your training. Develop a personal practice routine that complements your training schedule. For instance, if you are enrolled in a 200hr yoga teacher training certification Goa, set aside time each day to practice the techniques and concepts you are learning. Consistent practice helps in reinforcing the skills and knowledge gained during the training.
5. Seek Feedback and Guidance
Constructive feedback is essential for growth. Be open to receiving feedback from instructors and peers, and use it to improve your practice and teaching skills. Whether you are completing a 200 hour yoga teacher training or a more extensive 500 hour yoga teacher training in India, actively seek guidance and support from your teachers. Their insights can help you refine your techniques and deepen your understanding of yoga.
6. Build Connections
Yoga teacher training is not just about personal development; it's also an opportunity to build meaningful connections. Network with fellow trainees and instructors, as these relationships can provide ongoing support and inspiration. Whether you are in a yoga teacher training course Pune or attending a 500 hour yoga teacher training Bali, cultivating these connections can enrich your yoga journey.
7. Apply What You’ve Learned
After completing your training, apply what you've learned in practical settings. Begin teaching classes, offer private sessions, or integrate yoga practices into your daily life. If you’ve completed a 100 hour yoga teacher training or a more advanced 500 hour yoga teacher training, start incorporating the skills and knowledge gained into real-life situations to solidify your learning and grow as a teacher.
8. Continuously Learn and Grow
Yoga is a lifelong journey, and your teacher training is just the beginning. Continue to explore new styles, attend workshops, and deepen your practice. Consider further certifications or advanced courses, such as a 500 hour yoga teacher training India or 100 hour yoga certification, to keep evolving both personally and professionally.
