The cancelled Au’s??
Strange title I Know, but it’s the best way to describe this section
-The Day the World Eclipsed (the Original Plot)
-most may know this, but I changed the plot of the Story within the first few chapters. When Wukong left to head to the City, intent on finding a new home for his son… he was originally intended to go through with that.
I have Many MANY chapters of this unfolding- of Wukong actually going through with abandoning MK.
It was farrrr different than what the story has changed to now. And I love the direction the story is now going, but I had a lot of angst planned for the original :)
One day I might even post what originally was intended to happen.

LMK VS Legend
Peng:
The Golden Winged Peng
Korean- King of Bungma (Bungma= Dapeng)
LMK:
Powerful but a coward, we all know their story along with Azure and Tusk. All of them were former Celestials. The three ruled over Camel Ridge and became sworn brothers to Monkey King, Macaque, and Demon Bull King forming the brotherhood. After the "betrayal" of Monkey King they separated the brotherhood the trio stayed together and reunited with Wukong but only to battle and lose. Trapped in the scroll for hundreds of years. Were realized causing havoc to the cosmos. The rest is history For Now.
JTTW:
A demon born from the Primordial Phoenix, Given a high position in heaven which gave him his ego. He gave himself a humanoid form ate all the residence of the Lion Camel Kingdom ruled it for 500 years and then befriended the Azure Lion and Yellow-Toothed Elephant Demons.
Note: LMK and JTTW had Peng and Azure Switched In JTTW Peng was the leader and Azure the follower. Which of course is switched in the show.
His weapons are a ji and a Flask of Yin and Yang Essence which can suck in unsuspecting victims.
Flask of Yin and Yang Essence: After a while, the victim trapped inside the flask will be reduced to a bloody mash. (The flask was broken during the fight between him and Wukong)
In the book, it was the Buddha who subdued the Peng and returned him to Vulture Peak. He confessed to enjoying his demonic life and eating humans., but was left no choice but to abandon his evil ways and he was redeemed. He then became a protector of Buddhist law. He was later sent to destroy fake scripture without text by the Buddha. He is depicted perched above the Buddha's thrown as a guardian deity.
The Ming dynasty suggests Peng was a guardian of faith who watched over the world from an exalted position at the top of the Buddhas' throne.
Legend:
Dapeng Jinchi Mingwang/ Golden-Winged Great Peng His origins are derived from the Indian bird god Garuda.
Penig is one of the eight demi gods of Buddhism, he guards Mount Sumeru and Trāyastriṃśa. Pengi is depicted in the JTTW and General Yue Fei, mentioned in Chinese Buddhist literature.
The famous patriot General Yue Fei was believed to be the incarnation of Dapeng Jinchi Mingwang.
A demonic Peng born from The Primordial Phoenix the leader of flying beings. He also has a sister The Peacock Mahamayuri who once tried and failed to consume the Buddha. When he tried to kill her he was stopped and convinced to promote her to his godmother. Which makes the Golden Winged Peng the spiritual uncle of the Buddha. There is a tale of when Nü Tofu the bat spirit listened to the Buddha sermon on the Lotus Sutra at Leiyin temple. The bat spirit accidentally "broke wind" which stained the pure land. Peng snatched the spirit and killed her. For this Buddha exiled Peng to earth. He reincarnated as Yue Fei and the bat spirit reincarnated as Lady Wang. She married Qin Hui and Lady Wang killed Yue Fei in revenge.
For Backstory On These Two: Qui Hui and Lady Wang were the most hated couple in China for a thousand years. Qui Hui was a politician who gained his status by getting rid of political opponents, framing war heroes and was a sycophant to a foreign emperor. He and his wife both conspired to kill the Great War Hero of the Dynasty Yue Fei. He even becomes a puppet ruler. Qui Hui did not like Yue Fei because he was a great guy loved by all and became very popular even being more popular than the emperor. So Qui Hui had him returned and imprisoned. They torture Yue, but Yue Fei refuses to confess to something he did not do. They had him sentenced to death but in another story, Qui Hui's Wife Lady Wang poisoned Yue Fei. However, Yue Feis' story does not end at his death after a few decades Emperor Zhao Chen absolved Yue Fei and dedicated temples to him. Qui Hui and Lady Wang's betrayal and part in the war heroes' death were made public. In front of Yue Fei's temple, two iron statues of the couple were built for public shaming. People spit, abuse, and flop the statues and they get replaced when damaged they have been replaced 11 times since 1475.
Other Ledgends:
According to the martial arts master Laing Shouyu's book he was a great bird that was the guardian that could get rid of all evil in any area. Not even the MONKEY KING was a match. He was sent to China to defend China from invaders and was reborn as Yue Fei.
Yue Fei
The Shurangama Mantra: A mantra of Buddhist practice in China, Japan, and Korea, pertains to the Great golden-winged Peng bird, the Garuda it includes all species of birds. The Peng is the king among birds. He feasts on dragons, his being span measures an astounding 4,950 km, and when he flaps his wings the sea waters part to the deepest seabed.
Thoughts:
Peng's history and legends paint him as a far more powerful being than we have seen so far in the show if the writers do take anything from legends MK and the gang are in some serious trouble besides the ten kings. Also, it really is crazy that maybe even in the LMK universe Peng might have some serious power he was the last standing of the Sworn brothers in the final fight but that was mainly due to him running away. Peng does get redemption in the book with the LMK writers it's a 50/50 on the show. Also, love it when a character has a historical reincarnation to do some digging into.

The Graceful Cheetah: Nature's Speed Demon
When you think of speed and elegance in the animal kingdom, the cheetah is likely the first creature that comes to mind. Known for their breathtaking speed and striking appearance, cheetahs are truly one of nature's most remarkable animals. Let’s explore what makes these magnificent cats so special. Speed and Agility Cheetahs are the fastest land animals, capable of reaching speeds up to 60-70 miles per hour in short bursts, covering distances up to 500 meters. Their bodies are built for speed: long, slender limbs, a flexible spine, and powerful muscles all contribute to their incredible acceleration. Their large nasal passages and lungs allow them to take in more oxygen while running, and their tail acts like a rudder, helping them make sharp turns while chasing prey. Physical Characteristics Cheetahs have a sleek, golden coat covered with solid black spots, which provides excellent camouflage in the grasslands and open plains where they typically hunt. Unlike other big cats, cheetahs have distinctive "tear marks" running from the inner corners of their eyes down to the sides of their mouths. These marks help to reflect the sun's glare and enable them to focus better on their prey during daylight hunts. Their claws are only partially retractable, which is unusual among cats, giving them extra grip and traction when sprinting. This is similar to the way track spikes help human runners. Hunting and Diet Cheetahs are carnivores, primarily hunting small to medium-sized ungulates such as gazelles and impalas. They rely on their exceptional speed to catch their prey, often approaching stealthily before launching into a high-speed chase. Cheetahs aim to trip their prey with a swipe of their paw, then deliver a suffocating bite to the throat. Because of their immense energy expenditure during a chase, cheetahs need to rest after making a kill before they can eat. They typically hunt during the day to avoid competition with larger predators like lions and hyenas. Family Life and Social Structure Female cheetahs are solitary, except when raising cubs. They give birth to litters of up to six cubs after a gestation period of about three months. The cubs are born with a thick grayish fur, known as a mantle, which helps protect them by providing some camouflage and possibly mimicking the appearance of a honey badger, a fierce animal that most predators avoid. Cheetah mothers are highly dedicated and will move their cubs to new hiding spots every few days to avoid detection by predators. The cubs stay with their mother for about 18 months, learning essential survival skills before venturing out on their own. Male cheetahs, on the other hand, often form small groups called coalitions, usually consisting of brothers from the same litter. This social structure helps them defend territories and increases their chances of successful hunting. Conservation Status Unfortunately, cheetahs are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with an estimated population of only 7,000 to 7,500 individuals remaining in the wild. Their numbers are declining due to habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and a decrease in prey availability. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these incredible animals, including habitat preservation, anti-poaching initiatives, and programs to reduce human-cheetah conflicts. Conclusion Cheetahs are more than just the fastest animals on land; they are a symbol of grace, beauty, and the incredible adaptability of nature. Their unique adaptations and behaviors make them one of the most fascinating creatures on our planet. By understanding and supporting conservation efforts, we can help ensure that future generations have the chance to marvel at the breathtaking speed and elegance of the cheetah.

The Pacific Crest Trail: The US West Coast's 'greatest footpath'
By Gavin Scarff
One hundred years after the US designated the world's first wilderness area, an epic hike offers adventure seekers the chance to experience a slice of the nation's wild side.
On 3 June 1924, more than half a million acres of pristine mountain meadows, rock-walled canyons and aspen glades in south-west New Mexico's Gila National Forest were designated as the world's first protected wilderness area. One hundred years later, the National Wilderness Preservation System now counts 806 official "wilderness areas" spread across nearly 112 million acres in the United States – an area twice the size of the United Kingdom.
Two years after Gila's wilderness designation, educator and hiker Catherine Montgomery proposed creating "a high-winding trail down the heights of our Western mountains… from the Canadian Border to the Mexican [border]." The idea gained momentum during the 1930s under the stewardship of oilman and avid outdoorsman Clinton C Clarke, who dedicated much of his life to creating a border-to-border trail "traversing the best scenic areas and maintaining an absolute wilderness character", as he put it. This idea would eventually become the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT): a 2,650-mile path connecting Canada to Mexico and has been called the West Coast's "greatest footpath".
In 2023, craving a challenge that would break us from our desk-bound lives and thrust us into the wild, my partner, Claire Taylor, and I qualified as Mountain Leaders and set out on an epic journey to complete the entire PCT. For five months, we hiked past cascading waterfalls, snow-covered badlands and narrow slot canyons as we travelled south along "America's Wilderness Trail". Upon finishing, there was one section that really stuck out to us: the state of Washington, which is home to 31 designated wilderness areas (11 of which the PCT traverses).
The PCT section of Washington covers 505.7 miles of incomparable beauty over remote passes, snowy peaks and dense ancient forests with little sign of human life. And since Washington's portion of the PCT leads hikers through a greater percent of designated wilderness areas (63%) than the other two US states where the trail passes (Oregon and California, which contain 52% and 37%, respectively) it remains a true testimony to Clarke's vision of maintaining a slice of the original American wilderness.
Into the wild
"But what about the bears?" Claire asked. I replied with the line I'd been telling myself: "The presence of bears embodies the wilderness that we are seeking." In all honesty, having never hiked in bear and mountain lion country, we were a little nervous. We were about to spend five months hiking the PCT with nothing but our tent and hiking poles to protect us. But on our first day, we jumped out of the back of a pick-up truck whose faded bumper sticker read, "Into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul", and onto the trail.
We had spent an hour cramped among a handful of other hikers bumping along a dusty dirt road that wound its way along steep cliff edges from the small village of Mazama, Washington, to the trailhead at Hart's Pass, stopping just once for a herd of large white mountain goats to cross. Since it isn't permitted to cross a remote, unmanned border into the US from Canada, most travellers hiking southbound actually start here at Hart's Pass. They then trek north for 30 miles to "tag" the border before returning along the same trail where the pick-up truck had dropped us off four days earlier.
The North Cascades
Our journey started in the North Cascades, a vast mountain chain spanning more than 500 miles known for its jagged peaks, subalpine meadows, glaciers and waterfalls. "If you look at a map of Washington state, all the wildest places run down the spine of the North Cascades mountains," says Chris Morgan, an ecologist, filmmaker and podcaster who has called the North Cascades home for the past 30 years. "That spine is where our wilderness areas protect the wildest of our wild – [our] untamed landscapes where nature rules and reconnecting with raw, unfiltered life is still possible." As Claire and I peered out from the dense forest up to the towering mountains that we would soon ascend and pass through, we were struck by the utter vastness, remoteness and grandeur before us.
Ancient "blowdowns"
Within designated wilderness areas, there is minimal human intervention. "[Protected wilderness areas] were set up as places for humans to visit, but not linger," Morgan explained. Ten days after setting off, Claire and I were hiking through Glacier Peak Wilderness Area, known for its heavily forested streams, steep-sided valleys and rugged glacier-covered peaks. Fallen trees littered the path, often requiring us to carefully clamber over or under the debris. We passed a large "blowdown" fir tree that had been knocked down by a storm, cut and cleared by hand. Upon closer inspection, we noticed that someone had counted and marked its rings. Squinting, we counted roughly 700, meaning this tree was here more than 100 years before Columbus sailed to the Americas. As Morgan told me: "These [wilderness] areas thrust you back in time… to a time that connects us all to the raw nature of primordial life."
Staying wild
The PCT is maintained by the Pacific Crest Trail Association (PCTA) and a team of incredible volunteers. When I later asked Kage Jenkins, who works for the PCTA, about the role of designated wilderness areas, I was taken back to the 700-year-old downed tree. Kage explained, "Trail maintenance projects in wilderness areas mean no chainsaws or motorised tools; we rely on the crosscut saw. There's a simplicity and joy in spending the better part of a day at the foot of a stratovolcano cutting an enormous Douglas fir."
I then asked how the PCTA manages to maintain the trail while also keeping it wild. "The trail itself always finds a way to stay wild," Kage said.
Shifting landscapes
By July, the snow had just melted but there was already talk of fire among fellow hikers. We passed one young trekker going north to the Canadian border, who told us, "I hiked 2,600 miles last year but couldn't reach the border due to fire closing the trail. I'm back to hike the last 50 miles!" Wildfires are a very real threat in Washington. In July 2014 the Carlton Complex Wildfires burned 256,108 acres. This threat also provides opportunities for nature; some animals like the black-backed woodpecker and fire chaser beetle have evolved specifically to thrive in burn zones, while seeds from plants such as the snowbrush have shown that fire can actually stimulate germination. A warming climate means that the frequency and magnitude of Washington's wildfires is likely to increase.
In late July, we came across our first real burn zone. We hiked in silence through the dead trees, it was eerily quiet and somewhat disarming. The charred remains were a sobering reminder of how seemingly indomitable landscapes can be altered so quickly.
Ups and downs
Claire and I quickly found hiking through Washington both exhilarating and calming. Shortly after setting out, we came across the first bear droppings we would see in the middle of the path. Some nights, our campsite was swarmed by mosquitoes that had recently hatched following the melting snow. Other times, as the skies darkened and thunder rumbled, we rushed to find a flat camping site to wait out the incoming storm. This rollercoaster pattern continued, with hours of sunny, stunning hiking interrupted by extreme weather and energy-sapping lows. As Kimberly Myhren, a hiker we befriended on the PCT, said, "What makes [the PCT in Washington] difficult to hike is also what gives Washington its serene and rugged beauty."
These ever-shifting landscapes only added to the sense of wonder and adventure we felt along the trail: we weren't just passing through the environment but interacting and coexisting with it. "As many wilderness areas are large enough that there is no cellular service, these landscapes are places where one tends to disconnect from technology and be present in a different manner," Michael DeCramer, policy and planning manager at the Washington Trails Association, later explained "Visiting a wilderness area can afford an experience of remoteness that is difficult to find elsewhere."
"The mountain"
After a few weeks, we settled into a rhythm. While our GPS told us that we were covering an average of 20 miles and ascending more than 3,200ft each day, we soon found that we were measuring things differently. We focused less on time and distance and more on how we felt emotionally and physically. We were, as DeCramer later said, "present in a different manner".
One sunny day in mid July, "the mountain", as it's known to those in Seattle, came into view. Mt Rainier, the iconic 14,410ft active volcano and the most glaciated peak in the lower 48 states, appeared like a beacon. We had hiked 250 miles and knew we would enter the Mt Rainier Wilderness Area at mile 330, and having a reference on the skyline reinforced how quickly we were moving; each time we emerged from a dark forest or from a sheltered hillside, the mountain seemed to grow. Where possible, we would pitch our tents to catch a glimpse of the mountain before we fell asleep. The following morning, we would watch the first rays of sun reflect off its snowy peak as we sipped our steaming coffee.
The climb
The high-altitude terrain means that hiking the Washington section of the PCT shouldn't be taken lightly. It took us a full month to reach the Oregon border; by then we had ascended nearly 100,000ft – the equivalent of climbing Everest three times. With bags full of food, water, a tent, a sleeping bag and mat, clothing, a stove and gas and other gear, your fitness levels quickly improve. We had spent months training, yet still found ourselves exhausted most days and falling asleep by 20:00. After just 19 days, we had both lost a fair amount of weight and managing our weight and calorie intake became a battle we would fight for most of the trail.
Wilderness and civilisation
Whenever we needed to hike into nearby towns for supplies, the transition from wilderness to civilisation was abrupt and it felt strange to suddenly interact with locals after having not washed in days. Being able to fill up on much-needed food was great, but it came with hiking out of town with a heavy bag. Our meals were made of lightweight, high-caloric foods such as seeds, nuts, dried fruit, noodles, porridge, milk powder and the occasional freeze-dried meal as a treat. We stored our provisions in bear canisters that doubled as stools as we sat preparing dinner each evening. The canisters are designed to prevent bears and other creatures from accessing to your food supplies, and ensure there is no association between people and food.
We were awoken one morning by the sound of a pack of coyotes playing as the sun came up, their howls echoing through the forest. We also had five bear encounters in Washington, including a close interaction with a mother and two cubs who were more interested in their pursuit of berries than our presence. We met hikers who had seen mountain lions just metres from their tent. Deer would appear from nowhere, often while we were camping, curious and unafraid. On many afternoons, we passed marmots who whistled loudly at us to stay away.
Rustic lodging
In many places, long hikes end at a cabin with a hot shower. This is not the case on this section of the PCT, however. "Washington is home to some of the most remote areas on the entire PCT," explained Kage. "There are 40-mile sections of trail between the nearest two roads, further still to the nearest town." We carried our home with us, diligently pitching it every night at one of the numerous flat dirt spots established by previous hikers along the trail. Many nights we slept closer than we would have liked to dead but still standing trees – "widow-makers", as they're known by hikers, for their tendency to fall in the night.
While there were times I certainly missed a hot shower, many hikers prefer this rustic approach. As DeCramer said, "Many people report that wilderness areas provide an opportunity to experience challenge and self-reliance." Kage agreed, adding, "The PCT helps ensure each hiker can enjoy their own wilderness experience: appreciating a natural landscape and ecosystem, finding isolation or connection to and interdependence of wild places."
"What about the bears?"
After a month of hiking through Washington, I thought back to Claire's first question as we set out: "But what about the bears?" As I began writing this, a PCTA update flashed up on my phone: grizzly bears will soon be reintroduced into Washington's wilderness areas. "There are only six ecosystems in the USA outside of Alaska considered wild enough for grizzly bears, and this is one of them," said Morgan, who has been instrumental in advocating for their reintroduction "They will feel right at home deep in the heart of the endless forests and giant peaks that their ancestors once roamed."
One hundred years since the Gila wilderness area came into being, this feels fitting. For PCT hikers and for Washington, it's one more reason to cherish this great wilderness.

1/422/106-ID - Forced March (Mohn) The Fate of the American POWs of the 106-ID)
Source Document: Forced March Major John P. Mohn, HQ Co, 1st Battalion, 422nd Infantry Regiment, 106th Infantry Division
Forced March, from Schoenberg - St Vith (Battle of the Bulge, Belgium) to Berchtesgaden in Germany, is the Prisoner of War memoir of the 1200-mile forced march done by Maj John J. Mohn, Hq Co, 1st Battalion, 442nd Infantry Regiment, 106th Infantry Division, Golden Lion and has been extracted from a book published in Canton, Ohio, USA and printed by PPi Graphics, also in Canton Ohio, (ISBN-13:978-08-9863465-5-2). Being a friend of Mandy Altimus Pond, Maj John J. Mohn's granddaughter, we talked about the publishing of this book on the EUCMH Website and agreed that this work would be a great way to render honor to Maj John J. Mohn and the terrible period he experienced while being one American Prisoner of War in Nazi Germany during the last year of WW-2. Before starting with the text, I would like the reader to notice that combat photos from a surrendered unit in the combat zone don't exist, especially with the 422 and the 423-IRs of the 106-ID. On the morning of Dec 16, 1944, these two infantry regiments, were trapped between two German main axes of penetration; on their front, elements of the 5.Panzer-Army (Manteufeul) coming from Blieaf in Germany and heading to St Vith and on their rear, elements of the 6.Panzer-Army (Dietrich) coming from Lanzerath and Manderfeld heading to Liège via St Vith, didn't give a one of a chance to these two Regimental Combat Teams (422 and 423) which once cut off, without supply, couldn't withdraw in any direction. These men combated up to the last cartridge, then destroyed all their guns, machine guns, and rifles, and finally surrendered. Dedication To my wonderful wife, Cheri, and loving daughter, Debora Mohn Altimus; without whose prodding and encouragement this book would never have been written. And to my son-in-law Richard Altimus who assisted in the computer editing of this book. Editor's Note: Additional thanks to my granddaughter, Mandy Altimus Pond, who helped me with the publishing of her grandpa's book. Maj John J. Mohn, 1/442-IR, 106-ID
Foreword When WW II's Battle of the Bulge began with a surprise German attack on Dec 16, 1944, troops of the US 106th Infantry Division occupied the most exposed American positions. They had been in the European continent for less than two weeks and cut off from reinforcements, were left to face the German onslaught alone. They fought back, standing their ground, but as their ammunition; food and medical supplies dwindled and the enemy noose drew tighter, over 7000 were ordered by their commanding officers to surrender to the surrounding German forces. Except for the Bataan Death March, this was the largest surrender of American troops during WW II. Maj Mohn, of Akron, Ohio, the author of this book, was the Operations Officer of the 1/422-IR. He was a citizen-soldier who had volunteered to join the Army as a private in 1941. This is the story of his 1200-mile odyssey as a prisoner of war to the far reaches of the Nazi empire during which he and his fellow soldiers were starved, frozen, bombed, and shot. Because the Germans were unprepared to absorb a massive influx of American POWs and had little space to house them, Maj Mohn's imprisonment became an almost continuous five-month march through the collapsing and chaotic Third Reich. Initially, he was sent to a camp for American officers over 500 miles away from Poland. He
arrived there only to be marched out of the camp a few days later when the Russian forces broke through the German lines around Warsaw. Seeing the prisoners as a potential bargaining chip and intent on keeping them out of Russian hands, the Germans forced the Americans to make a harrowing march westward across rural Poland and Germany in the dead of winter just ahead of pursuing Soviet forces. After this month-and-a-half ordeal, the prisoners finally arrived at the Hammelburg POW Camp in northern Bavaria, only about 100 miles away from where they started. Two weeks later this camp was attacked and briefly captured by a Task Force of Patton's 3-A. The Germans, however, soon recaptured the camp and immediately sent Maj Mohn and the other prisoners on another dangerous march which ended at the Austrian border five weeks later they were liberated by American troops. Through it all, Maj Mohn preserved and returned to the USA where he underwent treatment and rehabilitation for injuries he had suffered as a prisoner of war. he returned to civilian life and developed a highly successful career as a psychologist. But his remarkable experiences in the military never quite left him. Eventually, he put words to paper and the result is the archive you are about to read - one of the very few accounts of this type ever to have been published. More than just a narrative of his experiences as a POW in Nazi Germany, it is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the US soldiers and a reminder to all of us of the sacrifices they made to preserve our freedom. Before the Battle of the Bulge - Mandy Altimus Pond
About 1937, while attending Akron University, John Mohn took Reserve Officers' Training Corps. John had no desire to become an officer, but by the end of his training, he had reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. In preparation for what appeared to be an inevitable world conflict, Congress passed the Selective Service Act in 1940. This was the first peacetime conscription in US history. Enacted in September 1940, this act required men between 21 and 35 years of age to register with local draft boards. Men were drafted by a lottery system and were required to serve for twelve months. After that year was completed, John was told he would be draft-free and not required to sign up, should a war arise. On Feb 4, 1941, John decided to enlist for this program and join the Navy. He drove to Cleveland, entered the Armory, and began the process. He took the written test, passed the physical, and was about to be sworn in when the commanding officer at the Armory said that John's teeth protruded too much and they would not accept him. John stated in an interview that 'this is stupid' and went to the other end of the Armory and enlisted in the Army. At this moment he could have enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant because of his ROTC training. It slipped his mind and he enlisted as a Private.
John was assigned to the 37-ID at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. He volunteered for the Signal Company (Teletype) and the day after he signed up, the teletype was discontinued, so he was reassigned to supply in the Signal Company and was sent to Indiantown Gap Pa. On Dec 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, and the next day upon request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Congress declared war on Japan and their ally Germany. This canceled the draft-free status that John had signed up for, as he had not completed his twelve months of training. His division was scheduled to board a ship headed to the Pacific Theater of the war, but the boat blew up before they could head out.
John was then sent to Fort Benning, Georgia, for officer training from February through April 1942. In late 1942, he was sent to Camp Forest and assigned to the 80-ID for a year. He became CO Fox Co, 1/319-IR, 80-ID. His division was in charge of clearing trees in the mountains in preparation for war games, training men in firing artillery, and surviving in realistic battle situations. John was in charge of the logistics and planning for the war games.
The 80-ID was then incorporated into the 106-ID. John was reassigned as Bn OP Officer and sent to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, and assigned to Hq Co, 1/422-IR, 106-ID. John reached the rank of Captain and was told that he was the youngest Captain in the Division. As Operations Officer, he was in charge of logistics for troop movements. He staged a large 3000-troop parade in Indianapolis in 1944. After our advance movement order was in, we received new equipment, turned in motor vehicles, and did what training we could at odd intervals. Finally, in September we moved by rail to Camp Myles Standish at Taunton, Mass. This place was known as a staging area where life reached the maximum of not letting anyone know anything at all. We existed on a monotonous routine of rumors until the day we redoubled our tracks, returned to New York, boarded the RMS Aquitania, and departed for Gourock, Scotland, on Oct 21, 1944. The 423-IR with various attached units arrived Oct 27, and the 422 and 424-IRs arrived Oct 28 with the artillery and some special units. We moved then to England where we were deployed in one of the most interesting and certainly the most beautiful parts of this country, the Cotswold section of the midlands. The 422-IR was stationed some 12 miles west and northwest of Oxford, the 424-IR near Banbury of Banbury Cross fame, and the 423-IR, and the Division Artillery near Cheltenham and Gloucester respectively. Division headquarters and special units were located centrally in this 200-square-mile area.
We remained in England preparing for an expected early crossing of the Channel. Between Nov 30 and Dec 1, the Golden Lions embarked on the long slow fifty-mile trip from Southampton to cross the Channel. We disembarked at Le Havre and at Rouen, a town about one-third of the way up the Seine toward Paris, and went into a bivouac in deep mud in the open fields in a cold drizzling rain, between the Dec 1/8.
During these days liaison officers from the 1-A headquarters arrived at odd intervals with conflicting and inconsistent sets of orders, so that during 48 hours we were assigned to three different corps in as many separate locations. Fortunately, troops and staff were arriving in unrelated groups as the weather and the Navy allowed them ashore so that no damage was done except to my disposition. The final messenger appeared on Dec 6 with instructions for us to leave for the St Vith area in Belgium. The first combat team to move, left the area on Dec 8, followed by the others as rapidly as possible. Upon arrival, we were to relieve the 2-ID, then in a defensive position, as part of the VIII Corps whose headquarters was then at Bastogne. Troops being in the throes of landing after a rough winter crossing, staffs only partly present and maps few and far between, our move to the battlefield was a rather remarkable one and highly successful despite its discomfort. The route carried us nearly 300 miles through Amiens, Cambrai, and Maubeuge in France to Philippeville in Belgium. After an overnight bivouac in extra deep mud near the latter town, we passed through Marche and the villages of eastern Belgium to the vicinity of St Vith, arriving during the period Dec 9/15. The relief of the 2-ID's weary troops stationed along the quiet German border in the Belgian Ardennes Forest commenced on Dec 11, and was completed on Dec 13, responsibility for the defense of the sector passing to me on Dec 12. The troops of the Indian head Division assured the men of the Golden Lion Division that there would be little action on this hilly terrain in the middle of winter. Edward P. McHugh
Preface - Maj John J. Mohn It was Dec 16, 1944, somewhere along the Siegfried Line near St Vith, Belgium. The German counter-attack that would later be referred to as the Battle of the Bulge had begun. The gray, foggy dawn made a perfect umbrella for the German launching of an onslaught that nearly cost the Allies World War Two. What happened at the Battle of the Bulge may be a well-known story but none of the stories make any reference to the group of American Soldiers taken prisoner at that time and marched for 140 continuous days covering over 1200 long, cold, starvation-ridden, nightmare miles, terminated only by the end of the war in Europe. Adversity is a mild term to describe the unbearable hardships endured by the ever-changing, ever-diminishing column of men. Temperatures dropped to ten degrees below zero (22°F). There were periods of fifteen days without a single bite of food. All suffered a phenomenal loss of weight (I weighed 65 pounds by the time of the liberation). We had inadequate clothing; many were without hats or gloves and at times no shoes. It was especially brutal for the poor Army Air Corpsmen who were only wearing thermal boots with no soles for walking when they were shot down and captured. The journey was marked by frozen feet, legs, arms, faces, and even blood trails. Treachery, deceit, and fear are just feeble attempts to put into words the anger, horror, anguish, and despair felt by these military men.
The ordeal that the approximately 7000 US soldiers endured between Dec 16/44 and May 2/45 can only be epitomized by saying that a scant thirty of the original group even reached liberation as a unit. Losses of men beyond belief resulted from attempts at escape, exposure, starvation, the sadism of the German Guards, and being strafed daily by our own and Allied planes. My book is not intended as a condemnation of the German People or Army but does make reference to differing attitudes and treatment by the Wehrmacht, to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for being alive, and the Elite SS Troops, who were constantly threatening our lives with attempts to exterminate us with machine guns and failed to provide even the most basic of necessities for our daily maintenance. The German High Command seemed at a loss as to what to do with so many prisoners and lacked a plan regarding the disposition of us. The result was a wandering march covering three countries with no apparent purpose, with a final goal of holding us as hostages in Berchtesgaden at the end of the war. The consequences for us, as Prisoners of War, were painfully clear. The facts and sequences of events I know first-hand because I was there from the beginning to the end. I saw dramatic changes in attitudes, values, behavior, and beliefs. Hidden strengths and weaknesses in the struggle for survival were surprising and at times frightening, but the salient factor through it all was that survival is 'All-Important' and that the 'Veneer of Civilization' is extremely thin.
December 16, the Horror Begins I couldn't help being reminded of that famous poem by Rudyard Kipling 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' on that fateful, foggy, grey, cold, drizzling morning Dec 16, 1944. The difference was that instead of 'cannons' noted in the poem, we had German tanks to the left of us, tanks to the right of us, tanks in front of us, and tanks behind us. To 'charge' ahead would have been to go down the steep slope of an evergreen-covered mountain. The landscape was so much like the mountain areas of Pennsylvania that it was hard to remember that we were in a foreign country fighting a very serious war. Even more seriously, we were surrounded and annihilated by German Panzer Divisions from the left and right of us. German artillery from the front was terrible enough but, to our dismay, the Germans had captured our artillery and were using our guns to fire upon us from the rear. When we called for supporting fire, they were aiming at us instead of their troops. Our Battalion Commander, Col Thomas Kent was killed by a shell coming in from the rear of our 'Pillbox' command post. At first, we thought our artillerymen were firing short of their target, but when we heard the German voice on our radio, we realized the awful truth - we were literally at their mercy. The divide-and-conquer strategy used in the German attack had been completely unexpected and effective. Read the full article

i've seen a bunch of people who don't really know about rostam, despite the fact that la signora's true identity (=crimson witch of flames) and therefore backstory has been revealed like. two years ago or something, so i think maybe i should repost this sort of essay i wrote about him, his friend arundolyn, and his relationship with both rosalyne and arundolyn. i just think that rosalyne/rostam/arundolyn lore is great (like. really crazy cool actually.) and more people should know about them!
Who are Arundolyn and Rostam from Genshin Impact?
Arundolyn and Rostam are two members of the Knights of Favonius who lived 500 years ago. They don’t appear in the game and are only mentioned in some artifacts and weapons, which explain that they aren’t really known.
Arundolyn was known as the Lion of Light and became Grand Master, while Rostam received the title of Wolf Pup at the age of 27 and was the right-hand man of Arundolyn. They both were very strong knights and played an important role: Arundolyn didn’t have a vision, but he had extraordinary strength and was able to fight with a sword and a claymore. Meanwhile, Rostam’s bladework had inspired the Favonius Bladework; and it is even said that no one has ever matched his ability.
They also were great leaders: the titles of Lion and Wolf are given to knights who have a great leadership potential and are destined to become Grand Master.
They fought on the land of Khaenri’ah to defend their homeland during the Cataclysm. And when the knights came back to Mondstadt, it was without Rostam who died. Since then, Arundolyn never fought again.
About their relationship:
(please remember that this is my own interpretation of their characters and their relationship, based on official informations)
At first, Arundolyn and Rostam were rivals, probably because both of them wanted to be knights. Later, they became childhood friends and shared their first adventures together.
The Brave Heart artifact set focuses on Arundolyn and his relationship with Rostam. I’ve read many times every artifact set and weapon centred on them, but Brave Heart owns a special place in my heart, because it shows how important Rostam was to Arundolyn.
Every artifact of this set is one of Arundolyn’s memories with his closest, dearest friend. He cared about Rostam more than anything else: remember, Mondstadt was menaced by Durin and needed his powerful Grand Master, but Rostam’s death has affected Arundolyn so much that he left his title and never fought again, even though his dream was to become a hero, even though his homeland needed him.
One of Brave Heart artifacts is the Crown of the Brave. It is a keepsake of a day he spent playing with Rostam. “Many years later, this wreath of flowers, though crudely made, would seem more precious still than the power a master of knights held…”: a crown of flowers that is more precious than the title of knight for a man who had always dreamed of heroism, if it’s not a proof that Rostam was more important than anything else, I don’t know what it is. And it’s one example among many others.
Rostam cares about Arundolyn as well. He dedicated his life to defend Mondstadt, as a knight but also in the dark: Rostam was a kind of Darknight Hero, doing the dirty job that couldn’t be done by a knight. But I read the Defender’s Will artifact set, and I personally believe that it is not Mondstadt he wanted to protect, but those he loved: Arundolyn and Rosalyne, with whom he was in love. Why? Because every time the defense of Mondstadt is mentioned in the Defender’s Will artifacts, Arundolyn and/or Rosalyne are mentioned. Mondstadt is seen by Rostam as the “land that his friend and superior loved” (Guardian's clock).
According to the canon, Rostam was in love with Rosalyne, and she loved him back. But I personally feel like Rostam was in love with Arundolyn as well.
Indeed, I find that there are some similarities between her and Arundolyn in their relationships with Rostam. One of them that is really interesting is the notion of time. Time is something that Rostam doesn’t have: “there was never enough time”. As I said, he dedicated his life to the protection of Mondstadt and the people he loved. He accomplished his duty as knight in the day, spent his nights doing what he couldn’t do in the daylight. “Only when he gazed on that maiden in the square, could he think upon things he had no time for. Only then could he think about his own future…”. What Rostam wanted and needed was time he could spend with those he loved. He gave hourglasses to Arundolyn and Rosalyne; which can't be referring to anything else than the time he wanted to spend with both of them.
So of course, we could imagine that Rostam was in love with Rosalyne and Rosalyne only, and that Arundolyn was just his dearest friend. But I feel like it's kind of obvious that Arundolyn was in love with Rostam, with the way he cared for him, and I love Arundolyn with my whole heart and don't want his love to be one-sided. Also I think that Rostam has two hands and we don't want any of them to get cold, so he got two people to hold them. Deserved, my king <3

A Greek Epinetron, a ceramic cover for the knees used by women so that their clothing would not be spoiled while weaving. Typically offered as a wedding gift, it was often taken to a woman's grave. 425-420 BC. National Museum, Athens.
The epinetron (Greek: ἐπίνητρον, pl.: epinetra, ἐπίνητρα; "distaff"); Beazley also called them onoi, sg.: onos) was a shape of Attic pottery worn on the thighs of women during the preparation of wool, not unlike a thimble for the thigh.[1] Decorated epinetra were placed on the graves of unmarried girls, or dedicated at temples of female deities.[citation needed]
Because of the strong association between wool-working and the Ancient Greek ideal of women and wives—as in the case of Penelope weaving in the Odyssey—it is a shape associated with the wedding.[2]
The theme of its decoration tended to be related to its use. The top surface was often incised to make it rough in order to rub the wool fibers. There was often a female head placed at the closed end, where the knee was covered. Epinetra were often decorated, sometimes depicting black figure Amazon women, as in the case of an epinetron painted by the Sappho painter between 500 and 490 BCE.[3]
The base of an epinetron from Athens, depicting a lion and a pegasus
terps: Epinetron” (επίνητρον) is a ceramic thigh protector that women in Ancient Greece used while spinning wool on their thighs. Penelope is usually pictured with one so it is associated with an activity you do while waiting. For Ulysses to come back, for the crisis to end. [...] I made this epinetron during the lockdown and sculpting it on my thigh, working on top of it for hours, I felt that I replicated the work of the women before me. The “spinning women” as they were called by male archaeologists, who perceived them as unethical because they were working.

crystal NOT in nagasaki, singapore: part four
Welcome back to the fourth part of my Singapore (and eventually Thailand) adventures! I stayed in Singapore for about ten days, so there's been a lot to talk about. Thanks for reading even though I write a lot!
Anyway, let's pick up where we left off, on day 8 of 10. This day was December 31st, New Years Eve.
We dedicated this whole day to exploring the Marina Bay area, which is where the biggest tourist spots are. We used some really convenient bike rental apps called Anywheel and HelloRide to rent bicycles to cycle around the area all day and it was super cheap! Only about $7 for a week pass if I remember correctly.
We started on the far side of the bay and enjoyed the view until we reached our first destination, the Cloud Forest and Flower Dome. These are two huge symmetrical domes which hold thousands of plant species as an indoor terrarium. There's even an indoor waterfall!
There were some lovely art installments around as well.
The cloud forest is a replica of a real biodiverse cloud forest, which are covered in a blanket of fog. There are mistings throughout the day, where mist is released into the dome to maintain the fog cover.
The flower dome was filled with thousands of different exotic plant species, as well as a themed Viking-Christmas display. I didn't take many pictures, but it was beautiful as well.
After enjoying the two domes, we stopped at a nearby hawker center for some lunch and ate more satay, stingray, and carrot cake. "Carrot cake" in Singapore is not like carrot cake back home, but is a savory dish made from stir fried cakes of radish mixed with flour and water. It was delicious!
After this, I got some dessert outside the entrance of the two domes, which were decorated with many lion statues. I got chrysanthemum flavor, which is very popular in Asia. It had a really interesting and earthy flavor.
After this we continued our biking, admiring the view of Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands, some of Singapore's most popular tourist attractions. We chose not to pay to enter Gardens by the Bay, and just enjoyed the iconic large flower-like structures from a distance. If you decide to enter the inner park, you can climb up to the top of them.
Marina Bay Sands is an absolutely gigantic resort hotel complete with casino, restaurants, and a rooftop infinity pool. It's incredibly expensive, with the cheapest rooms going for $500 a night. You can only access the rooftop pool if you're a hotel guest, which is disappointing, but it's still very beautiful to look at and is an iconic symbol of Singapore.
Speaking of iconic symbols of Singapore, it was time for us to visit the Merlion, Singapore's statue of a half-fish, half-lion that spits water from its mouth. This mythical creature is the official mascot of Singapore, with the fish half representing Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village and the lion half representing Singapore's namesake Singapura, meaning "lion city."
In the same way that many tourists love to lean on the Tower of Pisa in Italy, many tourists like to stage photos making it look like the Merlion's spout of water is coming from their own mouth. In my own goofiness, I did the opposite, drinking the spout of water from the Merlion's mouth instead.
Since that evening was New Years Eve, we joined my friend's extended family for a delicious dinner at a chilli crab restaurant. This restaurant utilized lazy Susan style tables that are prominent in Chinese restaurants, in which large dishes of food are placed on a rotating center of a circular table so that the dishes can be "passed" easily between diners to share. It's very common in Asian countries to order many large dishes to share between a table of people instead of one dish per person.
Chilli crab is made by stir frying whole or partial mud crabs in a thick, sweet sauce made of tomato and chilli. Wrestling crab meat out of the shell is already a difficult affair, but now imagine doing it while covered in copious amounts of chilli sauce. Needless to say it was very messy, but luckily the restaurant was well-equipped with bibs and gloves for us while we got to work. I'm not a big fan of spicy foods, but the sauce was sweet, so it was really tasty. It was a fun New Years dinner with family, friends, and delicious food.
I think I'll end this part here and continue with my Singapore adventures in one more part before moving on to my time in Thailand. I'm realizing I was able to fit so many memories into my ten days in Singapore, and there's a lot to write about. Thanks for reading and I'll see you in part five!

This year Anthem has been supporting the New Zealand Aged Care Association with the launch of its new campaign ‘The Domino Effect’ which aims to raise awareness of the dire situation facing our aged care sector. The campaign, which we developed in partnership with creative agency Chemistry, shows aged care beds falling like dominoes to emphasise how the crisis affects every-day Kiwis - from families stepping in and providing care for their older parents, to the ongoing impact on our health workers who bear the brunt of the overwhelmed and underfunded system. The Aged Care Association is hoping ‘The Domino Effect’ will entice action to provide a sustainable funding model to ensure quality aged care can be provided for those that need it now, and in the future. As part of this work, Anthem Executive Director Sarah Geel spoke to the 500 delegates at the 2023 New Zealand Aged Care Association conference about the important role the sector has in championing the message to spread the Domino Effect.
BATIK AIR TOUCHES DOWN IN AUCKLAND
We had our heads in the clouds this month helping to welcome a new player into the New Zealand aviation market, with the launch of Batik Air’s Auckland to Perth service. The Malaysian airline is part of Indonesia’s Lion Air Group and operates the route six times a week, with further onward connections to Kuala Lumpur using a Boeing 737 MAX 8. Interestingly, around 85,000 Kiwis live in Western Australia, and travel between Auckland and Perth is back to about 96% of pre-pandemic levels, higher than the overall return to international travel (77%). The launch attracted lots of interest, including from Stuff and NZ Herald
V GREEN GETS A TASTELIFT
Building on last month’s launch of Frucor Suntory’s refreshed V Green, we engaged a number of influencers and fans to spread the word on the smoother V Green, Kiwi’s favourite energy drink, following its flavour tastelift. Our team worked hard to make sure more fans were able to get their hands on the drink by delivering random drops to superfans.
THE FERNMARK LICENSEE LIVING BY A 500-YEAR PLAN
Every month, Anthem works with New Zealand Story to spotlight a business involved with its FernMark Licence Programme. We recently enjoyed speaking with Dan Taylor from Kono NZ, the world’s first Māori-owned wine business. Taylor discussed how Kono NZ is led by a 500-year intergenerational plan called Te Pae Tawhiti, which instils a unique focus on preserving and enhancing the taonga of the regions in which it operates. Kono NZ is proud to carry the FernMark because it instils confidence in the global market about the quality of its products, and bolsters the traceability and authenticity of its Kono and Tohu wines. Visit the New Zealand Story website to discover more about the FernMark Programme and Licensees and learn more about the mana behind Kono NZ.
ANTHEM LIFE
Meet our Agile Team
We operate an agile team model at Anthem which means we enjoy working with a diverse range of specialists and communications professionals, who bring their individual skills and knowledge together to achieve specific, critical business outcomes for our clients. However, we don’t always get the chance to meet face-to-face. Last week we welcomed a handful of members from our wider team to the office, to learn more about their varied careers and life experiences. To Sir Bob Harvey, Paul Hewlett, David Thomason, Louise Nicholson, and Georgina Bond, we loved having you here and hearing about your careers and past lives! To all our agile team, a huge thank you for bringing your specialist skills, industry expertise, diligence and enthusiasm to our table.
Celebrating International Dog Day 🐕
Last but certainly not least, the Anthem team was sure to celebrate International Dog Day as a very important day in the month of August. We welcomed three furry friends, Rosie, Billie Waka and Kahu into the office, providing doggie donut treats for the dogs and dog-themed cookies for the team too of course! That's our wrap for the month!
Kia pai to rā from the Anthem Team

In this review, we will delve into the intricacies of this product. We'll discuss its formulation, ingredients, benefits, and pricing. By the end, you'll have all the facts you need to decide if Neotonics is right for you.
Neotonics: A Glimpse into Gut Health and Radiant Skin
The connection between gut health and skin radiance is not new, but Neotonics is taking it to a whole new level. This supplement, available in delightful gummy form, is designed to boost your gut microbiome and reduce the signs of aging on your skin. Let's dive deeper.
Supplement Name: Neotonics
Main Purpose: Promote skin and gut health
Form: Gummies
The Potent Ingredients Behind Neotonics
Neotonics is armed with a proprietary blend of nine plant-based ingredients and a substantial 500 million CFU (Colony-Forming Units) of Bacillus coagulans bacteria. Let's explore these ingredients:
Babchi:
Babchi, also known as Bakuchi, is renowned for treating various skin conditions. Additionally, it can be beneficial for individuals dealing with constipation or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Fenugreek:
Hailing from the Mediterranean, fenugreek is celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, thanks to the compound Diosgenin. The gummy form makes it easy to incorporate into your routine.
Inulin:
This prebiotic is the fuel for probiotic bacteria, supporting their growth and balance in your gut. Inulin's journey through your digestive system feeds these beneficial bacteria.
Dandelion Extract:
Dandelion extract brings skin-protecting qualities to Neotonics. Often consumed as a tea, it contributes to overall wellness and longevity.
Bacillus Coagulans:
With 500 million CFUs per gummy, Bacillus coagulans is a powerful probiotic that can help balance your gut microbiome and enhance digestive health.

Lemon balm extract contributes to smoother skin and unclogged pores. It has a history of use in traditional medicine and gut health remedies.
Organic Ceylon Ginger:
This ginger variety multiplies beneficial bacteria and is lauded for its long-term anti-aging effects.
Slippery Elm Bark:
Known for its natural laxative properties, slippery elm bark aids in cleansing toxins from your body, promoting clearer skin.
Organic Lion’s Mane:
A type of mushroom, organic lion’s mane is associated with vitality, health, and overall digestive wellness.
Fennel:
Rich in vitamins, fennel supports digestive health, regularity, and overall well-being.
The Neotonics Experience: How It Works
Neotonics sets out to boost skin cell turnover by nurturing a healthy gut. It's simple – one gummy a day provides your body with a blend of nine ingredients, each working in its unique way to support gut health.
Skin cell turnover is the process of shedding old skin cells and replacing them with younger ones, which keeps your skin looking vibrant. As you age, this process naturally slows down, leading to wrinkles and fine lines. Neotonics steps in by targeting your aging gut, promoting anti-aging effects within, and accelerating skin cell turnover.
