I was mad at first, but now I’m laughing. If you truly think people hating and criticizing Blonde “haven’t even seen the movie” and are “just jealous of Ana” even though it’s consistently gotten low scores on film platforms since September, then I’ve got a very large bridge to sell you...

For some reason I've been fascinated going through IMDB rankings for Trek episodes and films. I've been going through to check out what the highest and lowest ratings are, how shows stack against each other, etc. I'll probably make some graphics or smth but for now here are Interesting Observations™️:
The highest rated episodes across all Trek are TNG's The Inner Light, DS9's In the Pale Moonlight, and PIC's The Last Generation, all with a 9.4 out of 10.
The lowest rated episode is TNG's Shades of Gray with an abysmal 3.3 out of 10. The next lowest is TNG's Sub Rosa with a 4.8. Everything else at least cracked 5.
If you take each show and average the episode ratings, Prodigy actually scores highest with an 8.1 out of 10! Prodigy also has the fewest ratings across the board, proving that more people need to watch it.
The movies' ratings don't really correlate with popular opinion, I'm guessing because more non-Trekkies tend to review them? The highest rated is Star Trek 09 with a 7.9, and the lowest is Final Frontier with a 5.5. Wrath of Khan only has a 7.7.
I expected Picard season 3 to rate higher due to its overall reception but I didn't expect so many episodes to get THAT high. The finale getting second place out of ALL Trek episodes is absurd to me.
The lowest rated TOS episode is not Spock's Brain, it's And the Children Shall Lead. Spock's Brain is fourth.
The lowest rated Voyager episode is not Threshold, it's The Fight. Threshold is second.
The lowest rated SNW episodes are The Elysian Kingdom and Subspace Rhapsody, both of which I thought were fairly popular.
The lowest rated overall season is Discovery season 4? I would've thought TNG S1 or Picard S2 but apparently not.

Get to know the mun
what’s your phone wallpaper: Hanma Shuji from Tokyo Revengers. I just love this bastard's looks. (and nobody is surprised ever)
Tumblr media
last song you listened to: Just So You Know - Survive Said the Prophet
youtube
currently reading: Several mangas but no novels or anything substantial.
last movie: Who Invited Them? https://watchseries.im/movie/watch-who-invited-them-full-87066
I've been on a horror kick for the past 2 years, but I wouldn't recommend this one too hard. It was a semi entertaining watch and the 5.5 note on 10 it got on imdb is accurate. It's a nice brain-off, easy entertainment movie, but its Not That Deep, not that scary and just really predictable at times.
last show: Just finished Fear The Walking Dead in time for its last season coming on the 14th. I have to say, at the top of my lungs... what the fuck. I want to be kind to the writers but it's obvious no one cares about characters development or consistency. Everything has gone to shit after s3 and its just a mess. Nobody has a personality that sticks. Nobody makes choices that makes sense for the characters they are supposed to be. I'm gonna watch this trainwreck to the end but if you are looking for a good zombie show, save yourself the trouble. Don't watch it.
what are you wearing right now: Undies only because I'm done with work and nothing screams "I'm free" better than not wearing anything lmao
piercings/tattoos: Nah
glasses? contacts?: Glasses, cant wear contact. But my vision isn't that bad. I'm like -0.75 in one eye and -1 in the other. its just for prolonged screen time, I don't wear them when I'm not in front of the screen.
last thing you ate?: Dinner. I made peanut butter chicken
favourite colour: Extremely in love with all shades of neon. green, teal, purples and hot pink. Cyberpunk aesthetic all the way.
current obsession: Sir Crocodile. He's been the obsession for the past 22 years. I cannot possibly pretend otherwise. I do have a few passing obsessions (Hawks, other one piece villains, my ocs, my friends ocs, @medicus-mortem's Law, specifically)
do you have a crush right now?: Going strong on 7 years with my partner 🥰💖
favourite fictional character: Crocodile is number one forever in my heart. Then you have Doflamingo, Hawks, Laffitte, Enel, Ferid Bathory, Neagan....and so many villains but lets stop there.

Star Trek Episode IMDb Ratings 01/23
It's a new year, with new episodes and new data to play around with, as well as a convenient break in new episode releases. Therefore, my fellow nerds, let us gather 'round for more statistical analyses of Star Trek episode ratings.
I've done this twice before, in July of 2021 and April of 2022. You can look there for a more complete introduction. Basically, I used Python to scrape IMDb data on episode ratings for Star Trek, applied some stats, and am presenting the results.
On the broadest level, the average Star Trek episode is rated 7.36 (SD 0.82, IQR 0.9), continuing a downward trend from previous times. More details under the cut.
Analyzing series by series, Prodigy is keeping its throne as the highest rated series at 7.99, and The Animated Series its much less illustrious title of lowest rated series at 6.56. The greatest standard deviation is still The Next Generation at 0.94, and the lowest is The Animated Series at 0.46, although Prodigy is close behind at 0.48. The average for each series (with standard deviation in parentheses) is below:
TOS: 7.35 (0.80) TAS: 6.56 (0.46) TNG: 7.32 (0.94) DS9: 7.48 (0.78) VOY: 7.32 (0.73) ENT: 7.49 (0.69) DIS: 6.83 (0.86) PIC: 7.12 (0.84) LWD: 7.74 (0.56) PRO: 7.99 (0.48) SNW: 7.90 (0.78)
Compared to last time, the biggest changes are Discovery and Lower Decks each increasing by 0.06, Prodigy increasing by 0.11, and Picard decreasing by 0.25. Of those, only Discovery hasn't had new episodes released since last time, potentially indicating that more positive reviews come later on. Now, I'm not saying that Disco episodes have been the victim of negative review bombing shortly after release, but I'm not not saying it either.
Weighting the averages by number of votes doesn't do much, although Discovery and Picard both get notable increases. The difference between average and weighted average for each show is below:
TOS: +0.10 TAS: +0.03 TNG: +0.10 DS9: +0.06 VOY: +0.05 ENT: +0.01 DIS: +0.21 PIC: +0.17 LWD: -0.06 PRO: -0.12 SNW: -0.03
Breaking things down by season, the average Star Trek show has an average season rating progression of 7.34 - 7.17 - 7.31 - 7.23 - 7.55 - 7.52 - 7.42. The highest rated season is Prodigy's first season at 7.99, and the lowest is Discovery's fourth season at 5.63, an increase from its 5.52 rating last time. Season by season stats for all the shows are below:
TOS: 7.65 - 7.46 - 6.85 TAS: 6.59 - 6.48 TNG: 6.76 - 6.87 - 7.53 - 7.54 - 7.59 - 7.67 - 7.17 DS9: 6.96 - 7.33 - 7.42 - 7.66 - 7.62 - 7.60 - 7.63 VOY: 7.08 - 7.11 - 7.21 - 7.57 - 7.45 - 7.28 - 7.47 ENT: 7.24 - 7.37 - 7.67 - 7.74 DIS: 7.49 - 7.42 - 6.63 - 5.63 PIC: 7.59 - 6.64 LWD: 7.49 - 7.85 - 7.87 PRO: 7.99 SNW: 7.90
The highest and lowest rated episodes of the franchise haven't changed, with "Shades of Gray" at the bottom (3.3, down from 3.4 last time) and "The Inner Light" and "In the Pale Moonlight" sharing the top spot at 9.4. The lowest and highest rated episodes for each series are:
TOS: "And the Children Shall Lead" (5.2), "The City on the Edge of Forever" (9.2) TAS: "The Magicks of Megas-Tu" (5.9), "Yesteryear" (8.0) TNG: "Shades of Gray" (3.3), "The Inner Light" (9.4) DS9: "Let He Who is Without Sin" (5.5), "In the Pale Moonlight" (9.4) VOY: "The Fight" (5.0), "Blink of an Eye" (9.0) ENT: "These Are the Voyages…" (5.3), "Twilight" (8.6) DIS: "All is Possible" (5.1), "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2" and "If Memory Serves" (8.2) PIC: "Monsters" (5.4), "Nepenthe" (8.3) LWD: "Second Contact" (6.8), "No Small Parts" and "wej Duj" and "First First Contact" and "Hear All, Trust Nothing" (8.7) PRO: "Starstruck" (7.2), "Supernova, Part 1" (8.9) SNW: "The Elysian Kingdom" (6.1), "A Quality of Mercy" (9.1)
Shout out to Lower Decks for having four episodes tie for highest rated.
For each series, relative opinions haven't changed for TOS, TAS, TNG, Voyager, Enterprise, or Picard. DS9's "Meridian" is no longer tied for lowest rated, "If Memory Serves" joins "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2" for the highest rated episodes of Discovery, "No Small Parts" and "Hear All, Trust Nothing" join the highest rated episodes of Lower Decks, and "Supernova, Part 1" takes over from "A Moral Star, Part 2" as the highest rated episode of Prodigy.
The average Star Trek episode receives 2342 votes (SD 1123, IQR 1392). For each series, the average number of votes (standard deviation in parentheses) is:
TOS: 3495 (802) TAS: 678 (103) TNG: 3207 (793) DS9: 1950 (376) VOY: 1772 (277) ENT: 1578 (360) DIS: 3677 (1328) PIC: 3754 (1201) LWD: 941 (34) PRO: 289 (147) SNW: 3475 (638)
The highest is Picard at 3754, and Discovery has the greatest standard deviation at 1328. The lowest is Prodigy at 289, and Lower Decks has the lowest standard deviation at 34.
I think the biggest conclusion here is that more of y'all should be watching Prodigy! It's the least popular based on votes, yet the highest rated series.

Time 4 Tapes
Been a minute since we had a good tape talk. This one even featured compact discs!
Tumblr media
But first up, we have informational VHS tapes. Some of my favorite things to find. I do not own any woodworking tools and I have never been to Yosemite, but maybe these will convince me.
I’m also excited to watch these kids’ tapes on flight. I am a pilot and aerospace engineer, but I am always learning. I can’t wait to discover the wide world of airplanes all over again.
Tumblr media
A couple normal movies for my own enjoyment. I automatically snag every Star Trek tape I come across. The Final Destination tape has a really cool iridescent color. My first name is Atticus so TKAM is a legal obligation. And Dances with Wolves is just a pretty good movie that I was very surprised to find shoved into one tape. (It’s two hours long! That could easily be a box set.)
Tumblr media
Now for some cool stuff. Across two different shops, I found THREE Dean Koontz audiobook sets! Koontz is one of my absolute favorite authors, so I’m super happy with this discovery. The Taking and False Memory are both cassette sets, and Darkest Evening is a CD set. I’ve actually read most of that last one, and it was really good from what I remember. I think I just got too busy to finish it.
Tumblr media
Lastly, it’s really sad that they stopped making horror movies in 2003. But at least I got the last one! On DVD, no less! I’m not super into disc technology because it doesn’t have the clunky appeal of tapes, but this one called out to me like a siren in heat. It has a 5.5/10 on IMDB. I’m sure I’m going to have a great time watching this.

Beloved, I am shaking like a rat dog, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT VECNA AND THE PHANTOM I AM AQUIVER WITH ANTICIPATION
Oh, my darling wife, I am so glad you asked!
It all starts in the year 1986, when Jill Schoelen is cast as Mary in Babes in Toyland. And yes, I DO mean the terrible Babes in Toyland movie I own on VHS. The one where Keanu Reeves and Drew Barrymore perform an entire musical number about how much they love being from Cincinnati, Ohio while inside a moving Jeep.
The one where Mr. Miyagi is Santa Claus. That one.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Jill Schoelen is now a certified screen presence, and she has the legitimacy of working with Reeves and Barrymore (who are still stars on the rise in the late 80's and early 90's). She also happens to have a pretty solid singing voice, as demonstrated in BITL.
So 1989 rolls along and Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera is the latest American pop culture hit. After two years of drawing enormous crowds on London's West End stage, the show finally opens on Broadway in 1988. Hoping to cash in on the Phantom-nomenon and hook a wider teen audience, the writers and producers turned it into A SLASHER FILM!
Starring Jill Schoelen as Christine Day and Robert Englund as the mysterious (perhaps murderous) composer Erik Destler, this version of Phantom uses a modern-day frame narrative to play with Gaston LeRoux's original horror themes.
Honestly, if it weren't so terribly produced and awkwardly acted, this could have been a pretty solid B-horror movie. As it stands, 1989's Phantom of the Opera is one of my favorite Disasterpieces.
Tumblr media
While this movie was very much hoping to capitalize on Englund's popularity (and the highest grossing Nightmare on Elm Street movie to date, 1988's Nightmare 4: The Dream Master) it failed spectacularly. With 5.5 on IMDB and 33% on Rotten Tomatoes... it's bad.
Fun Fact: The lead investigator in Phantom is named Inspector Hawkins.
But the major floppage of his opera slasher put zero dents in Englund's career. He went on to sell out two more Freddy movies before moving on to other roles... including Victor Creel in Season 4 of Stranger Things.
Tumblr media
Anyway, Vecna's Dad is the Phantom of the Opera.

If I’m interested in a movie and I find the imdb score barely hitting 5.5, I know it’s gonna be a good time lmao
7.0-7.9 contain letterbox's best ofs and also the most boring movies of all time
6-6.9 you could be looking at the greatest movie of your life
5.5 you are about to experience either hell or a very strange nirvana that will be impossible to replicate on following watches.

2022 Movie Odyssey
Well, it’s another record set for the the latest date that this list has ever appeared. As per tradition on this blog, this is the complete list of films I saw for the first time in their entirety over the last calendar year. They are listed in the order of completion and with a respective rating out of ten from me. Each rating (my ratings system and eligibility rules are explained here) is based on my personal imdb rating. All half-points are rounded down.
March was defined entirely by my blog’s annual 31 Days of Oscar marathon (in which I limit myself to watching films nominated for an Academy Award or Honorary Academy Award winning films). June and early July were defined almost entirely by viewing submissions for Viet Film Fest - which contributed heavily to the amount of short films (one will notice tons of MGM short films and Popeye as well; the latter I believe I will be completing later in 2023) seen this year.
In sum, I saw 207 films that were new to me in 2021 (a sharp decline from 329 in 2021). 116 of those were features (films defined as forty-one minutes or longer); 91 were short films (forty minutes or shorter). My yearly goal to watch more pre-1980 films than 1980 and after - so as to ensure that I my viewing habits are well-rounded, chronologically - failed for the first time in at least eleven years. Among features, I saw six more features released 1980 and after. Adding both features and shorts, the deficit was nineteen. My professional situation in the second half of the year did not help matters.

the fact that mio figlio nerone is only rated 5.5/10 on imdb database when it's clearly an 8/10 speaks for two facts: 1) it is very hard to translate italian comedy because it's too dependent on tone and culture, 2) y'all have poor taste

Arcadian: Nic Cage and the End of the World
Arcadian is all about Nic Cage and the end of the world. Sort of. An apocalyptic film that has creatures tunneling up from the depths of the earth to wreak havoc on humanity. The film has gotten a pretty short shrift. IMDb has given it a 5.5 out of 10. Rotten Tomatoes? 78%. However, the audience score for the fim is only a 55%. The Story Paul, Joseph and Thomas live a live a spartan life after…

A New Resident Evil Movie is in the Works Again at Screen Gems
Tumblr media
h Yet again, a New Resident Evil Movie is in Being Made; Maybe This Time They Can At least Get the Characters Right... Exciting (maybe?) news for all horror and gaming enthusiasts: a new Resident Evil movie is officially in the works, and it's looking to up the ante with a higher budget and new ambitions. Courtesy of a recent scoop by InsiderFandom, we've learned that Screen Gems, the studio behind the movie, is nearly done with the script and is gearing up for casting and filming. The latest installment appears to be a significant departure from the modestly budgeted 2021 movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which, despite its mixed reviews, managed to carve a successful path at the box office. Initially, Sony Pictures had allocated a limited budget for the film but stepped back, leading Constantin Film to seek external financial backing. This time around, Screen Gems is not only handling the production but also the distribution, hinting at a robust confidence in the upcoming project. The 2021 release, while financially successful, garnered an unremarkable 5.5 rating on IMDb, reflecting the mixed critical reception. It seems the filmmakers have taken the critiques to heart; insiders at Sony are hinting at a production scale and dedication akin to the much larger "Afterlife" project. This shift suggests a meticulous approach to budget planning, with an emphasis on not compromising the script's integrity amid financial strategies. Of course, setting a budget and scale like that of Resident Evil: Afterlife isn't good enough. As we've seen in the past: money isn't the problem. Directing, story and characters need to be spot on. Ultimately, the 2021 film did have some good aspects to it. One notable scene involved Chris walking through dark hallways of the mansion with zombies and flashes from his firearm. One bad aspect of the movie was how poorly they portrayed Leon. Is the New Resident Evil Movie a Sequel, Reboot Or Something Else? The storyline for the new movie remains tightly under wraps, sparking a whirlwind of speculation among fans. Will this film serve as a reboot, or will it continue the narrative left by "Welcome to Raccoon City"? The previous film, noted for blending elements from RE1, 2 and 3 (which was probably one of its biggest problems), left several plot threads hanging—particularly those involving the enigmatic Umbrella Corporation and characters like Ada Wong, whose story teased just beyond the credits, remains unresolved. The potential return of Albert Wesker also looms over the franchise, posing questions eager fans are desperate to have answered. Director Johannes Roberts, anticipated to return for this next chapter, is expected to tackle these unresolved mysteries, potentially providing the closure that has eluded fans thus far. While the full details on casting and specific plot points are still under lock and key, anticipation is undoubtedly building for the new Resident Evil movie. Stay tuned for further updates as we keep a close eye on developments. Capcom and Screen Gems seems poised to breathe new life into the Resident Evil saga, potentially redefining it for both longtime fans and newcomers alike. With a higher budget and a promise of greater scale, the next chapter in the Resident Evil series might just be what the doctor ordered for horror aficionados craving that mix of adrenaline and nostalgia. However, maybe Capcom can have a little more control over this new Resident Evil movie. Try and reel this one in a little bit this time, okay Capcom?
