[SGA] 4.18: The Kindred (1/2)

Previously on Atlantis, we took a fleet against the Replicators and blasted them to bits. (Or so we thought) The Athosians got stolen too, and a very pregnant Teyla is not happy about that. Not at all.

Who died? I’m so confused.

SGU HIATUS PLANNED

Comtraya and Tek’ma’te, y’all!

As you may know, we show all three Stargate shows at the VP, one episode per day, thursdays and sundays at 9pm (CET), switching between each. However, considering the fact that the length of each show varies greatly, (ten seasons of SG-1, five for SGA, and two for SGU) this means that with the pace we are currently going we makeonly  little head-way with SG-1 (currently at season four).

We started watching each show chronologically back in October ‘19 (before that, we picked and chose episodes at random), and since then we’ve been through SGU once already, and are now on episode 2x17 Common Descent in our second run, while - as already mentioned - we’ve just reached season four of SG-1, and season four of Atlantis as well.

So, to make a good head-way on the other two, we mods have come to the conclusion that it would be better to pause SGU after this run. This is not to exclude fans who prefer SGU over the other shows, it’s just the fact that there’s still soo much of SG-1 to go, and we aren’t even half-way through yet, despite chronologically viewing it since ‘19.

4x18. “Max” (part 2 of 2) - X-Files Rewatch

I love this two parter. It doesn't unnecessarily complicate the mythology, but is really interesting. Don't need to add stuff or make it more complex to tell a good story.

Mulder's INCREDIBLE gazing at Scully as she gives her theory about the meaning behind her gift.

I love that Scully thinks these things - that Mulder thinks of her in this light.

Mulder thinks her interpretation of his gift is better, or maybe she's right about his reasons for giving it to her. Joking as a deflection from his emotions.

The one where... Mulder is almost abducted from an airplane and Scully reads a lot into Mulder’s Apollo 11 keychain gift. Part 2 of 2.

Best: Scully’s Apollo 11 speech, and the way Mulder GAZES at her as she talks. He heart eyes LOVES her. There’s a lot to unpack in what she says, and I think she’s probably in the ballpark of why Mulder got it for her. But mostly I adore the way he watches her as she completely over analyzes his gift, and then just makes a joke because he’s Mulder and he can’t handle the emotions. And she laughs because she understands.

Worst: So what was this object everyone spent these two episodes looking for? Maybe an alien energy source... The aliens want it because question mark. The military want it because question mark. Max (and by extension Mulder) wants it as proof of the existence of extraterrestrials. Classic MacGuffin - key to the plot and to motivate characters to action, but otherwise the object itself is irrelevant. We don’t learn anything new about aliens, or the syndicate, or anything really. Everyone just chases their tails for two episodes.

Rewatch Thoughts:

Cancer Arc Check-in: Scully gets a nosebleed and Skinner tells her she should get checked out at the hospital.

Mulder trying to outrun a truck in his wetsuit is one of the funniest moments of the show. He looks ridiculous.

Mulder getting undressed in front of Scully like it’s no big deal. Which maybe isn’t given how much time they spend in each others motel rooms. Or maybe he likes pushing the boundaries of their relationship because he knows he can count on Scully to de-escalate or ignore him. Scully turns around with a slight roll of her eyes as Mulder unzips his pants.

Scully: What are these people dying for? Is it for the truth or for the lies? Mulder: It’s got to be for the truth. If we owe them anything, it’s to make sure of that. This is why Scully threw in her lot with Mulder way back in the pilot, and then over and over again. Even when his theories are wild he’s always got the best intentions, he wants to find out the truth, just like she does.

Scully’s description of Max and Mulder, kindred spirits: Men with spartan lives, simple in their creature comforts if only to allow for the complexity of their passions.

The airplane abduction imagery is pretty creepy and cool.

Nitpick: if Max was sucked out of the airplane this long before the crash, his body would have ended up nowhere near the crash site...

Scully: In a mental institution. Mulder: I’d, I’d go with you, but I’m, I’m afraid they’d lock me up. Scully: Me too. This has to be a running joke between them. She’s smiling in anticipation.

Scully Describing Her Week to a Friend

(Let’s pretend she still has one other than Mulder 😩)

4x18 Max

Sorry about cutting our call short last week. I just... Agent Pendrell died in the attempt on the Sargent’s life and I can’t help thinking... People keep dying, and I can’t do anything about it. I’m a Medical Doctor! An FBI Agent! I ought to be able to... You know, I knew he had a little... crush on me and I - I didn’t even know his first name... Sean. Sean Pendrell. He died for the Sargent and I couldn’t even keep him out of military custody. They arrested him and covered everything up.

Mulder was also picked up by the military while investigating the second crash site in the lake. They let him go the next day though. We went to see the leader of the crash investigation and Mulder told him his theory. That Max was abducted mid-flight to take the object he was carrying. He would have been returned and the flight would have continued with no one the wiser but a military aircraft interrupted and shot the UFO down and the plane went down as well. But we still didn’t know what that object Max was carrying was, or why everyone was after it. I went to see the woman who had claimed to be Max’s sister - she wasn’t, in fact she was an aeronautical systems engineer who had stolen something she and Max believed to be alien technology, proof of extraterrestrial life. She had one part, stolen when she was abducted from her motel room. Max had one part, stolen when Max was abducted mid-flight. And Max hid the third part, which Mulder was able to retrieve from a storage locker at the Syracuse airport. I warned him not to open it, that it was dangerous, highly radioactive based on what we’d seen. He got on a flight back to DC with it. But he called me mid-flight to tell me that Pendrell’s killer was on board, he had him locked in the bathroom. Skinner and I and a team of agents met the plane but... Mulder was dazed, missing nine minutes, and Max’s object and Pendrell’s killer were... gone.

Cases like these I wonder what it was all for? Pendrell... that Sargent... the 134 people on that plane... and Max... We owe them truth, not just coverups and lies. You know, I told Mulder that he and Max were kindred spirits. Extraordinary individuals... whose passions are all consuming. I admire that spirit, that drive. But no one can do it alone. It’s why I stay with... why I stay on the X-Files. With Mulder.

4x17 Tempus Fugit

For my birthday? Oh uh dinner with Mulder. When Mulder asked me if I wanted to grab dinner after work I honestly thought he had no idea it was my birthday. He’s never remembered my birthday before. I guess there’s nothing like a death sentence to make people aware of the passage of time... No, it was very sweet. He got me a keychain.

Yeah, an Apollo Eleven keychain. He was just going to tell me why, when we were interrupted by a woman who claimed to be the sister of a man who was involved with one of our cases awhile back, my first year on the X-Files. Max was an abductee, and he told his sister he was in danger before boarding a plane that had just crashed in upstate New York. We joined the crash investigation and went out to the crash site... I - I’ve never seen anything like it. 134 passengers and crew. Debris and... body parts scattered across a swamp larger than a football field... Mulder noticed that the watches on a couple of the bodies had stopped at 8:01, nine minutes after the official time of the crash. Which was strange but... We found one survivor, covered in radiation burns, which didn’t make sense either. So I went back to Max’s sister and found out that Max had been working at an energy company and may have stolen plutonium, which could explain the radiation, but not some of the other evidence. Mulder and I went out and interviewed a Sargent at the nearest Air Force base about he’d seen on the radar the night of the crash. Nothing unusual, which disappointed Mulder, who was convinced by this point that Max had been abducted. Despite the fact that Max was among the victims - Mulder ID’d the body himself.

When we got back to the motel Max’s sister was gone, her motel room torn apart. That night the Sargent we’d interviewed earlier showed up, scared out of his mind. He told us he’d lied about what he’d seen that night, been forced by his commanding officer to lie, and that the other soldier on duty that night was now dead. He told us that the plane was intercepted by a second aircraft and there was an explosion. But the plane debris showed no evidence of an explosion. Mulder theorized that there was a third aircraft that didn’t show up on the radar that was shot down by the intercept aircraft, and landed in the lake. Got all that?

So - after a brief car chase - I flew back to D.C. with the Sargent to put him in protective custody and Mulder went to investigate this possible second crash site. We went to this bar to meet a federal marshal and I ran into Agent Pendrell - have I mentioned him before? He works in the lab, helps us out sometimes... A man came in and shot at the Sargent but Pendrell was caught in the crossfire and... I um, sorry, can we continue this next week? I’m ok, I just - thanks.
