It’s day 4 of our Holiday Fear: 4th of July 🇺🇸 edition, the final day which is also our day of celebration. Today’s final pick is the 1996 film Uncle Sam. Not sure there is a more fitting movie for the day, as this movie is patriotic as shit. This slasher involves a Desert Storm solder who is killed by friendly fire. He returns home via a coffin but quickly rises to kill off all those non-patriotic people who don’t appreciate our flag! This is a cheesy 90’s slasher but there’s something endearing about it, which might have something to do with this being written by the legendary, late Larry Cohen. Day 2 of our Holiday Fear: 4th of July 🇺🇸 edition is The Bay, a 2012 found footage film directed by @barrylevinson. The premise is an ecological disaster occurs in Maryland during Fourth of July festivities as flesh eating parasites infest the bay, causing a huge outbreak of skin conditions as well as erratic and violent behaviors. I will confess to being a sucker for found footage films and have seen/ sought out quite a few. This one was up there, for me, as one of the better lesser known found footage films as it kept me hooked throughout. The gore and skin disease effects were great and the actors were all really effective. This was another eco horror film, like yesterday’s Frogs, so I guess I’m also a sucker for this genre as well. Day 1 of our Holiday Fear: 4th of July 🇺🇸 edition is the 1972 film Frogs. This eco-horror (yea that’s a thing) shows there are more dangerous things than fireworks on the Fourth of July as a wealthy southern man has his family and a photo-journalist over to celebrate the holiday while the local amphibians and reptiles begin to exact revenge for the poor care of their marshland habitat. I can’t lie, I loved this movie as it was just the right amount of cheesy horror that I needed in my life. I love frogs to begin with and the closeup shots of the frogs trying to give menacing looks was highly entertaining as we don’t often think of them as dangerous creatures. There’s nothing great about the kills and a lot of it is quick cut-aways to people falling or being dragged to give the impression they were overpowered but it’s still all in good fun.
