#4thofJulyBlackout
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Our country is currently divided, and there is not liberty or justice for all. The very pillars of our great nation are corrupt. This Fourth of July, let us raise awareness of the racial injustices in our country. Let us call upon our leaders to prioritize our fundamental American rights, as well as create an important dialogue surrounding such issues. Independence day is celebrated each year to commemorate our country's independence from Great Britain. We might legally be a "free country," but are we really free when a vast portion of our nation faces obstructions to their freedoms each day? Join us on July 4, 2015 as we wear black instead of the traditional red, white, and blue. Instagram, tweet, and/or post on Facebook in black, and in the caption write "Liberty and Justice for all," and explain your view of what this quote means to you and what it means for you to be an American. Hashtag #4thofJulyBlackout. We hope this blackout will encourage everyone to critically examine their patriotism and what it would mean to be a nation where there is truly justice for all. This movement is not meant to disrespect our country or anyone who has fought for our freedom. It is in fact the opposite; the most powerful way to honor America is by asking everyone to recognize what ideas like "liberty and justice for all" truly mean, and use those ideas to shape the way we live our lives as Americans. The civil rights movement paved the way, however we still have a long way to go in terms of dismantling ingrained racism in the minds of society.

How will you commemorate our freedom?
