Vertical Slice Breakdown - Dragon Age Veilguard
youtube
It's been a few days since the Dragon Age Veilguard gameplay video was released. I posted a challenge for aspiring developers to identify as many specific features and systems as they could spot. My expertise is in gameplay, so that's where I will be focusing. Expertise on visuals like lighting, rendering, shaders, etc. should be directed elsewhere.
0:22 - In-Game Cinematic with moving cameras 0:30 - Seamless cinematic transfer to gameplay, quest tracking UI element, different walking speeds 0:36 - Interactable element with UI 0:43 - Camera movement - orbital motion, but likely not detachable 0:53 - Party member movement, including waiting for the player as part of an escort sequence 2:08 - Uninteractable NPC actors perform animations 2:13 - Scriptable terrain changes/destruction 2:18 - Scriptable interactions with multiple actors 2:29 - Uninterrupted conversations when transitioning from gameplay to in-game cinematic 2:39 - Context-specific traversal method with special traversal animation (balancing across a thin beam) 2:50 - Small sequence that is likely unloading the last area and loading in data for the next environment. Likely also locks players off from returning to the previous area. 3:22 - Conversation wheel with "personality" icons and paraphrased words 3:39 - Dynamic inventory in game cinematics, show player's items 3:46 - Scripted Player equipment change during cinematic 4:04 - Quest variables (e.g. player background) result in different NPC response 4:27 - Combat UI including current target (four red dots), Combat log 4:30 - Player can jump 4:33 - UI Melee danger indicator for incoming attacks - silver for enemy attacking, gold for shortly impending damage 4:35 - Player can dash/dodge 4:39 - Event log - Items/Loot notification 4:42 - Shooting UI including hit/miss indicator (red reticle), time scaling, arrow charging (rounded purple bar above arrow count), arrow refill cooldown 5:03 - Some kind of special charge/jumping attack 5:09 - XP gain UI, Quest objective completion UI, Quest objective map indicator UI 5:12 - Auto sheath weapons 5:15 - Potion use/Health recovery 5:18 - Recover potions from the environment 5:40 - Quest objective indicator change on approach 5:49 - Ranged attack danger indicator 5:51 - Defensive action (player reflects damage back on ranged attacker) 6:06 - Enemies can be knocked off edges when fatal 6:10 - Destructible objects in combat, can be scripted 6:16 - Some kind of "special" dodge skill with VFX, likely a rogue class skill 6:51 - Second context-specific traversal method (sliding down a slope) also likely a second "can't go back" type of lockoff 7:01 - Action/Command UI (party/self ability commands) 7:06 - Specific skill used, skill cooldown, enemy debuffed + UI (weakened), resource used (purple bar at bottom of screen) 7:07 - Quick use button mapping, likely for controller face buttons 7:09 - Resource bar refills on its own and on attack damage 10:47 - Different kinds of health bars (likely magical shield and armor) 11:59 - Boss UI with both magical shield and armor bars. Not sure what the number 4 there indicates 12:15 - Telegraphed danger zones projected onto the floor 12:22 - Quick recover timing event 14:45 - Conversation option for branching cinematic 14:51 - Follower approval UI event log 18:49 - Destructible object with health bar and UI highlighting
Each of these elements is something that would need to be designed and implemented by someone on the gameplay team working with UI, engineering, and art. See anything I missed? Which did you get?

WIP Game:
RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPS.
This is my second time making one of these, and in part it's to help me reorganise my thoughts and help me get back into writing. University has done a lot to weigh me down over the past two years, and so in some ways I'm hoping to get the chance to write at least a bit more often this year.
In order to best show just how much I am working on, I'm dividing this into old WIPs (from the last list) and new WIPs (which I started on since then). And remember, you can ask about any of these and I will share what I can!

Ok, so the good news is that most of my fics are now quite happily in one place... but the less brilliant news is a lot of these are longer-term projects. Some of them I am further along with than others, but a good few of these are a long way off. If you want to read them, then make sure to ask about them to keep them fresh in my mind!
Now, as for who I'm tagging in: I'm going to drop ten names here, and offer that anyone else who wants to do the game can do it as if I recommended you (I am not putting 70 tumblrs in here, I'm pretty sure the site would hunt me down). You don't have to join the game yourself, but I personally enjoy it as a fun way to order my thoughts!
@mean-scarlet-deceiver, @angryskarloey, @joezworld, @septemberofgenders, @scottishproductions, @jobsoldbootlace, @anonymousboxcar, @transsexualunderground, @eeveeandme05 and @thefedoragirl
And yes, I am probably going to do this again if I get under 50 fics. This is turning more into an organisational exercise than an exercise in showing off what WIPs I have XD

Based on reality...ish.
After seeing this post, @elizabethgoudge wondered:
"Wasn't there a real prototype like the Hydra plane in Captain America?"
TL:DR -Yes, there was. Indeed there were several, though "real" is a bit bit up in the air (or not, considering that none of these things ever flew...)
*****
"Captain America: The First Avenger" based some of its hardware on four or maybe even five Nazi-era prototypes, "real" in the sense of having a nebulous existence as sketches, blueprints, or concept / wind-tunnel models.
The film's design department clearly knew their stuff. They may have used other things instead or as well (there were so MANY), so the following is just my own speculation, based on many years of making many model kits :->
The Hydra mini-sub...

...seems based on a cross between the (real) "Seehund" midget submarine...
...and the design-concept Focke-Wulf Ta 283 ramjet aircraft.
Red Skull's escape plane, though never clearly visible...
...wasn't just based on but WAS a Focke-Wulf Triebflügel ("powered wings" - meaning the ramjet-driven rotor blades around its waist).
This was a proposed tail-sitter VTOL interceptor where taking off straight up might (?) have been possible, but landing straight down and backwards would invite all sorts of unwanted excitement.
It also made a brief background appearance in "Loki".

The Valkyrie flying wing…

…was based on, and hugely upscaled from, the Horten H.XVIII, one of many pie-in-the-sky "Amerikabomber" projects.

Resemblance to a Northrop YB-35 (props) / YB-49 (jets)...

…is coincidence based on form-follows-function, since - and rather importantly - the Northrop planes were built for use by the US Air Force, not the Luftwaffe (though given the way some plotlines went, their use by Hydra is another matter…)
The flying bombs which it carried...
...seem based partly on a Messerschmitt Me 334 project fighter...

...and partly on a Sombold So 344 bomber-destroyer, which had the same detachable-bomb arrangement.

The So 344's explosive nose was meant to be launched into a formation of Allied bombers, after which - despite aerodynamics now wildly out of whack and a bunch of angry escort fighters in hot pursuit - the piloted part would land safely.
Yeah, right...
*****
Despite "what if...?" suggestions on the "History" Channel that one or other of these contraptions could have "won WW2", they didn't even help to lose it less severely.
IMO their probable main purpose was to keep numerous engineers and designers safe(-ish) with pencil and ruler in workshops and at drawing boards, rather than very much not safe with rifle and grenade on some bomb-and-bullet-swept front line.
*****
Besides the midget submarine, there's one other exception to all this based-on-paper stuff, and that's Red Skull's car...

...whose inspiration seems to have been the Mercedes Benz W31 G4 heavy staff car and a Hispano Suiza H6A limousine custom-built in 1923 for the King of Spain.

All of which goes along with my own notion, that starting with a real - or merely "real" - object is a great way to make fantasy objects look, and sound in description, more convincing.
Or, as @dduane says, "The more truth you mix with a lie, the stronger it gets..."

C9 Solvent Prices, Price Trend, Pricing, News, Analysis & Forecast

North America:
During the initial quarter of 2024, C9 Solvent prices in the North American market took a downward turn, largely influenced by increased competition from cheaper imports and softened demand from the Paints and Coating industry post-festivities. The US market, in particular, experienced a significant price dip due to heightened overseas imports offering more competitive pricing. Despite ample product supply domestically, including port inventories, subdued demand and increased selling pressures contributed to the overall bearish trajectory. As the Red Sea crises normalized and freight rates declined towards the quarter's end, the bearish trend in the US C9 Solvent market further solidified. Meanwhile, the construction industry showcased positive growth, with notable increases in completed houses and new constructions, offering a contrasting upward trajectory amidst the market's downturn.
Europe:
The European C9 Solvent market, especially in Germany, faced a bearish trend during Q1 2024, primarily driven by increased imports of cheaper alternatives and reduced raw material costs. Subdued demand persisted in the downstream Paints and Coating sector post-festivities, maintaining ample product supply domestically. The market's bearish trajectory was accentuated by sluggish demand, heightened selling pressures, and a notable decline in the construction industry by the quarter's end, reflecting broader economic uncertainties and pessimism among constructors. Housing projects, commercial ventures, and civil engineering activities all experienced contractions, further dampening market sentiment amidst prevailing uncertainties.

APAC:
In the APAC region, the C9 Solvent market remained stable throughout Q1 2024, characterized by unchanged prices and a balanced demand-supply dynamic. Low demand prompted cautious trading practices and optimized inventories, supported by falling global crude oil prices. South Korea experienced the most significant price changes, yet overall stability prevailed throughout the quarter. Seasonal fluctuations were negligible, with no significant deviations observed compared to the same quarter last year. The pricing environment in South Korea, particularly, remained steady, showcasing consistency amid market equilibrium.
MEA:
The MEA region, notably the United Arab Emirates, witnessed notable fluctuations in C9 Solvent pricing during Q1 2024, influenced by factors such as costly imports, crude oil price fluctuations, and global growth concerns. Supply dynamics fluctuated due to disruptions in the Red Sea shipping initially but improved later in the quarter, stimulating trading activities. Demand remained stable, particularly from the paints and coating sector. Overall, market sentiment leaned towards bullish, with prices increasing in February and stabilizing in March. Despite fluctuations, a positive outlook characterized the quarter, with expectations of stability amidst potential feedstock crude oil price increases. In summary, the MEA region, including the United Arab Emirates, experienced varied pricing dynamics for C9 Solvent, ultimately stabilizing with optimistic prospects for Q1 2024.

When I said the “AI” projects grifters are pushing were search engines, THIS WAS NOT THE INTENDED TAKEAWAY.
I wrote a blog post a bit ago trying to explain what the things people are presently trying to call “AI” really are, and how the whole thing is a big ol’ grift you shouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole... and I don’t think anyone actually really read that, but since I’ve written it, there sure has been a sharp uptick in stories about people you’d really hope would know better treating them like Ask Jeeves and expecting to get accurate answers to random questions. So... let me try this again.
So first let’s just cover how a search engine actually works. Or at least a simplified version of my personal understanding which is probably a bit out of date so you know, grain of salt.
While we’re used to accessing the internet through handy little URLs like, say, https://www.tumblr.com, those are just sort of handy aliases managed by this whole database setup (domain name servers) which browsers are set up to check if there’s text in there, basically, and what those match them to is numerical addresses. It’s a bit like every website has a phone number. Just as an example, open another tab and just type in oh... 74.114.154.18 and watch it bring you somewhere. They expand things a bit now and then, but basically, much like when a video game has a safe with a 3 digit combination and you don’t feel like solving a puzzle, you can totally just sit there, punch in every possible number, and doing so you’ll eventually see every website there is. It’s only what like 1,000,000,000,000 possible combinations? People who are actually serious about running a search engine will just set up a script that does that, throwing some real processing power at it, locally save every thing that comes up, and also search all those files for every file they point at, links, images, databases, whatever, and save those locally to. A whole lot of computing and a whole lot of storage later, and you literally have a local mirror of the entire internet saved to a huge pile of hard drives. Really this is such a costly endeavor it’s honestly just a handful of people who really do it and everyone else just... quietly passes your searches on to them like some kinda middleman.
Anyway, once you have your local copy of the entire internet, and entirely too much processing power to hit it with, you can do things like... look at every individual page on the entire internet and count how many times every given word appears on them, and if you’re feeling real bold, phrases, getting nice little running tallies to jam into your huge database. Then when a request comes in to give you a web page about seagull poop, you just figure well, there’s this one page that says “seagull” 49 times, “poop” 37 times, and specifically says “seagull poop” 35 times. That seems pretty on-point so you search that up as result number one.
You’ll notice there’s no thinking anywhere in here, just saving files, counting words in them, and doing some data processing on those counts. There IS a bit more to everything of course, like giving extra relevance points if something is in a title or header tag, or how somewhere along the line we all agreed to add these meta tags where people can just say outright what sort of information is on a page on the honor system (extra relevance points if people actually click links too), and someone just deciding wikipedia articles are always good so if there’s a wikipedia article, that gets a ton of bonus relevance points. Having the search string in the URL of the site of course also helps, and somewhere along the line things got gummed up with people abusing the hell out meta tags and also just giving major search engines money in exchange for bonus relevance points. Then much more recently you’ve got software engineers and suckers trying and utterly failing to “improve” results by doing dumb things, like Street Fighter 6 is out, and there’s lots of people looking for info on that, so if someone types like, “Street Fighter 3rd Strike Remy move list” into a query, well, part of that string says “Street Fighter” so let’s give all the results people searching for just that are enjoying lately, and forget the other terms.
Anyway, that’s your standard search engine. People with these sorts of “AI” projects do not, in fact, generally have a local copy of the entire internet saved. Some would like to, but you need a LOT of storage, and also there’s quite a lot of laws and security measures specifically to prevent people from doing that, and even preventing the people we as a society generally agree should be mirroring the whole internet have to leave certain parts out. Now partly they get around that by just completely ignoring that those laws exist and banking on nobody actually enforcing them in any meaningful way. Largely though they want to either avoid blatantly breaking those laws/circumventing security, so they buy “training data” from whoever’s willing to sell it, and also taking measures to obfuscate that it’s all stolen.
Anyway, you know about Markov chains? The basic idea is you have a large body of text you’ve done some statistical analysis on like we have when we archive the whole internet or what chunks we can get our hands on, and we break down the percentages of how likely every word is to come after a given word we’re looking at. Doesn’t have to be words either, you can do it with whatever. But the basic idea is, let’s say your data set is a bunch of tedious nerd posts from the year Portal came out. Now if I start off giving you the word “The” there’s all sorts of things that could come next. “The end” “the next” “the only” or maybe “the cake.” This is totally how that predicted next word thing on your phone works by the way. Anyway to really do this properly you like map out the entire web of phrases you can end up with, but for now let’s just look at that pretty popular combo of “the cake” and keep looking that way, and huh, people sure do follow “cake” with “is” these days, and especially “the cake,” I can look this up in my database easy. So you just keep hitting that next suggested word on your phone, we’re probably getting “The cake is a lie!” out of it. Someone I know loves doing stupid little things with these if you want an example.
This is totally how these “AI” things do the natural speech things, plus maybe some hard rules like “when the prompt is a single word pre-prep the chain by putting “[whatever term] is” into a standard search engine routine and just wholesale life the first sentence you can find that starts with that at the top of a block of text, then Markov chain from there.”
And we want to obscure that we’re doing this so let’s also have a rule like “OK you can go with the best match for the best work so many times in a row, but after that you have to mix it up by taking the second best word. So again, still at the height of Portal fever, we start off seeing this common word sequence, but OK let’s switch it up after “the cake is” and not go with “a” what else do we have? Well, there’s no “the” at the start, but “cake is so delicious and moist” is also real common. That’s another long string of direct quotes though, so again, let’s flag it after so many top matches and use a slightly less common one. And you end up spitting out like, “The cake is so delicious and nutritious.” Hey, that sounds like natural language, AND it’s variations on commonly said things, so it’ll probably read as legit. We’re done here, ship it.
Of course cake ISN’T nutritious, it’s like, pure sugar and gluten. But we don’t have any capacity to think or understand we’re just stringing words together based on how commonly they follow each other. Because again, there is no actual intelligence, creativity, or understanding in here, just data sets and strict procedures on how to pop words from them.
One amusing thing about this is that basically by design, it’s practically guaranteed that this is going to spit out any block of text you can imagine at you, except for the ones that are completely true and coherent. It’s intentionally avoiding ever doing that because you’d spot the plagiarizing immediately.
Oh and the whole “AI generated art” scene is doing this exact same thing. Only difference is there’s an extra step where after they download literally every image ever posted on DeviantArt, they have sweatshops full of people where for like one shiny penny a day, destitiute people pour over things, hacking them up with lasso tools and painstakingly adding meta tags for every possible thing you could for every single image they have, so the program can pull up a bunch of images that all have all the search text and then go like “OK start with this as a base, this has the 20x10 pixel blue right eye tag, does anything else in the batch have that exame tag? Cool, let’s select one of those and paste it over this eye, now, how are we on 30x40 slightly reddish upturned nose tags?” etc. etc. etc. More impressive parlor trick to pull off, but it’s still prettty plainly theft.
Anyway, this is all a thing, as I think I said, because all the people left holding the bag when everyone realized crypto/NFTs/the metaverse/etc. was a gigantic pyramid scheme have absurd amounts of processing power in big warehouses and it’s all going faulty and looking bad from being under too much heat and running too long so it’s hard to sell on eBay, so, what other scam can we do with it? Aha, fake AI.
And all the people who continue to fall for that hook line and sinker should not have the jobs they do because that level of being a gigantic mark proves them unfit to do really anything that involves any sort of decision making, do what you can to have them removed.
Also maybe give me money? I’m at risk of death otherwise.

SJS biography SJS frontman Stuart STAWMAN is an English musician, songwriter and producer currently based in the Blue Mountains of Australia. With a style described as 'genre-blending', but with feet firmly planted in neo-progressive rock, the music of SJS takes in elements from the worlds of post-rock, folk, world music and modern electronic textures. Stuart honed his studio skills as a London-based sound engineer across the nineteen eighties. Alongside encounters with the likes of David Gilmour, Tears For Fears and many more, he was in the unique position of watching Talk Talk record a project that would become the stuff of music mythology, their "Spirit Of Eden" album. Inspiration was not in short supply. Fast forward to now and we find him combining with the talents of Douglas Skene (Hemina, Anubis), Graeme James (Tramtracks), Christopher Soulos (Espirito, Flatwound, Masha's Legacy) and others to create a distinct, new voice in contemporary progressive rock. This voice takes inspiration from Anathema to Zappa, from "Talk" era Yes through to "Spirit Of Eden" era Talk Talk.....~

NASA Gives The World a Brake - NASA

NASA Gives The World a Brake - NASA
Just as NASA needs to reduce mass on a spacecraft so it can escape Earth’s gravity, automotive manufacturers work to reduce weight to improve vehicle performance. In the case of brake rotors, lighter is better for a vehicle’s acceleration, reliable stopping, and even gas mileage. Orbis Brakes Inc. licensed a NASA-patented technology to accomplish that and more. This revolutionary brake disc design is at least 42% lighter than conventional cast iron rotors, with performance comparable to carbon-ceramic brakes.
Jonathan Lee, structural materials engineer at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, uses his skills as a mechanical designer backed with material science training on multiple projects including the Space Launch System and the International Space Station. Interested in supporting NASA’s other mission to advance technology to improve life on Earth, he was looking for an innovative way to design a better automobile disc brake.
He started with a single disc with a series of small fins around the central hub. As they spin, these draw in air and push it across the surface of the disc, where the brake pads make contact. This cools the rotor, as well as the brake pads and calipers. He then added several long, curved depressions around the braking surfaces, radiating from the center to create the regular, periodic pattern that gives the new technology, known as Orbis, its PeriodicWave brand name.
The spinning fins and the centrifugal force of the wheel push air into trenches, causing a turbulent airflow that draws away heat. These trenches in the braking surfaces also increase the available surface for air cooling by more than 30% and further reduce the weight of the disc. They also increase friction in the same way that scoring concrete makes steps safer to walk on – the brake pads are less likely to slip, which makes braking more reliable.
The troughs draw away more than just heat, too. Water and road debris getting between the pad and rotor are equally problematic, so the grooves provide a place for the air vortex to push any substance out of the way. A small hole machined at the end of each one creates an opening through which unwanted material can escape.
The expertise developed while solving problems in space has proven useful on Earth, too. Orbis’s brakes are sold as aftermarket modifications for high performance cars like the Ford Mustang, as well as some Tesla models.

Improvements in Machine Learning
With the Mac version, Apple has included machine learning, which automates a lot of time-consuming editing jobs. For instance, the software can now recognise and separate subjects in a video automatically, making the process of adding effects and transitions easier.
ProRes RAW support
ProRes RAW is now supported by Final Cut Pro for Mac, giving editors greater freedom and better-quality video. Professional videographers that demand the best quality for their productions will especially benefit from this.

Metakaolin Prices Trend | Pricing | Database | Index | News | Chart
North America
The North American Metakaolin market saw continued high demand and rising prices throughout the first quarter of 2024. Strong demand from the cement sector was driven by stabilizing mortgage rates and the approach of the spring home-buying season.
The robust housing market, characterized by the completion of new housing projects and a persistent shortage of second-hand homes, fueled this demand. House sales, including outlays and commercial activities, expanded steadily, with overall housing inventory diminishing. Realtors became particularly active in February and March 2024, leading to increased cement consumption and price hikes.
Commercial activities also saw growth, evidenced by numerous renovations among major US hotel chains. Despite typically slower construction activity at the start of the year and challenging weather conditions impacting transportation and logistics, the US Metakaolin market experienced increased lead times for deliveries.

Asia
In the first quarter of 2024, Metakaolin prices in the Asian market increased by approximately 2%, despite underperformance in the construction sector. The market was mainly driven by the limited availability of feedstock Kaolin Clay due to challenging weather conditions in North China. This resulted in reduced mining activities and limited Kaolin Clay supply, leading to moderate Metakaolin production.
Support for the Asian Metakaolin market came from healthy transactions in the downstream ceramic industry during the Chinese Lunar New Year festive season. However, demand from the downstream cement sector remained low as cement production and exports from China declined throughout the quarter. With predominantly challenging weather conditions, construction activities in China struggled to gain momentum. Post-festive demand from the ceramic industry also faded, offering little support from the demand side.
Europe
The European Metakaolin market saw a price appreciation of approximately 1% in the first quarter of 2024. The market was largely influenced by supply chain disruptions caused by strikes from union workers demanding higher wages. This led to limited functionality in railways and trucking, increasing lead times for deliveries.
Demand remained moderate across the Eurozone, primarily in the Dutch, Belgian, and British markets where construction activities improved. However, in Germany, demand conditions were unfavorable as the construction sector remained in retrenchment for the fifteenth consecutive month. All segments of the construction sector, including residential, commercial, and civil engineering, experienced significant contraction towards the end of March 2024. Declining residential permits and a pessimistic outlook in real estate continued to cast a negative sentiment on investment prospects.

The Barbie/Oppenheimer Nexus
Since Lee Begin first shaped it, the T-38 has continually inspired affection. Lewis Shaw still calls it “the 36-24-36 blonde on the beach.” Dan Canin raves: “I absolutely love the airplane. The T-38 and its siblings [F-5/F-20] are absolutely beautiful things…iconic, really…designed, it always seems to me, exactly as one would sculpt a fighter if he didn’t have to worry about anything practical…like fuel, weapon systems, etc. As we go exclusively with stealth designs, which are inherently fat to incorporate weapons internally, I doubt we’ll ever see fighters this good-looking again.” (Smithsonian Magazine)
The wasp-waisted T-38 first flew in 1959, the same year the Barbie doll went on sale. Lee Begin, the legendary but relatively obscure Northrop employee directly responsible for its lines, went on to shape the F-18 and to project unthinkable systems for the refuelling and rearming of fighter aircraft under conditions of radioactive nuclear fallout. The T-38 occupies the atomic age intersection of Barbie and Oppenheimer.
The creators of Barbie started off in business selling picture frames, which of course are an example of transparency and rigorous craftsmanship. Their endeavors can be understood in the context of the post-war Los Angeles art scene, which was influenced by the availability, among other new materials, of plexiglass and the techniques to turn it in to seamless, flawless Jetsons-esque domes and canopies. The Barbie doll was made of vinyl.
The T-38 was a relatively lightweight aircraft, designed with a view to minimising the work of maintenance. The chief designer Edgar Schmued (previously responsible for the P-51 Mustang) wrote
“Our dollars do not buy as many airplanes as they once did. The reason is the increased complexity, increased weight and the requirements for new, more costly methods of manufacture and more costly materials.
"If we are to remain strong in the air, we must continue to improve our military aircraft rapidly. But if we are not to upset our economy we must keep our defense costs under control...
"The armed forces--like the average housewife--have to manage their budgets with a great deal of care and caution. Most contracts for new airplanes are awarded on the basis of design competitions. Contractors are invited to enter design proposals based on requirements for a definite type of airplane to perform a specific mission. The winning contractor is picked from these proposals. The unit cost of the airplanes—usually directly related to weight—is a powerful factor in award of the contract.
"Thus an engineer is tempted to enter the competition with the very smallest airframe that can possibly do the job, because the lighter the airframe the lower will be the cost. This is why airplanes that are acquired through the normal bidding processes often suffer at the outset from from being too skimpy—and thus short-lived...”
The surprising reference to “the average housewife” brings home the comparatively mundane significance of Northrop’s strategy. The T-38 and related aircraft also verged on being too small, with too short a range and too little capacity for carrying armaments. But their J58 engines could be changed by one or two men in minutes, and most of the aircraft’s systems were easily accessible by a technician standing on the ground. Schmued’s “lightweight fighter” design policy, inspired by the inescapable economic logic of housekeeping, is still compelling, though nuclear war and Betty Friedan’s “problem that has no name” have receded from public consciousness. Perhaps, against the background of all the sexism of the 50s, a point can be awarded to Schmued for his acknowledgement and valorisation of the organisational skill of female homemakers.
In The Crying of Lot 49, Thomas Pynchon’s jokey song of loyalty to an LA defense manufacturer ends with the following lines, underlining the absurd conjunction of southern California’s civic and military-industrial cultures—bubblegum pop art and closely guarded manufacturing complexes.
High above the L.A. freeways, And the traffic's whine, Stands the well-known Galactronics Branch of Yoyodyne. To the end, we swear undying Loyalty to you, Pink pavilions bravely shining, Palm trees tall and true.
It doesn’t seem to add up, although the latter economically supports the former in a more or less visible way. The means of support are hidden. Secrecy, an essential aspect of Oppenheimer’s Manhattan Project, metastasized through California’s aerospace industry in the Cold War years.
Stealth—by definition, an invisible presence—serves as a useful icon of the Cold War aerospace industry in Los Angeles, which seemed absent and present at the same time. In Los Angeles, defense sites, landscapes, and populations operated in public but were concealed from public view.
As a metaphor and as an example, Stealth then captures this essential feature of life in Southern California during the Cold War—a life which, for many, was governed by shifting designations of what was known and unknown, said and unsaid, about an economy operating above and underneath the public surface of the region. Secrecy fostered two cities laminated to each other, one seen and the other unseen.
The resulting alignments and misalignments—places where the secret operated quietly, and others where it became public—shaped the feel of the city. One of the ways in which this double consciousness is most routinely captured is in the ways Los Angeles plays itself. Los Angeles as a cultural imaginary reveals its fractured character in its films and its fictions: of power hidden underneath the surface, of violence coupled with fine weather. This union of purity and danger, which so regularly reappears in and as Los Angeles, was also a central trope that helped mask one of the largest knowledge production and manufacturing efforts during the Cold War.
