Realme 6 Pro and Realme 6 launch date reveal and Samsung Galaxy M31 announcement dominated the conversation in a rather busy week in terms of tech news development. Although MWC Barcelona 2020 was officially cancelled, the likes of Realme, Sony, LG, and Huawei unveiled new smartphones this week, including Realme X50 Pro, Huawei Mate Xs, Sony Xperia 1 II, and LG V60 ThinQ. Additionally, Jio announced new plans for Jio Phone subscribers. Read on for more on these and other major tech developments from this week.

Realme 6 Pro, Realme 6 launch date

Realme has announced that it will launch the new Realme 6-series phones on March 5 in India. The two phones will succeed the company’s Realme 5 and Realme 5 Pro in India. The company has released multiple teasers about the two upcoming phones that have revealed several key features. According to Realme, the Realme 6 Pro and Realme 6 will feature a quad rear camera setup that will be headlined by a 64-megapixel main camera. Other cameras in the setup will include an ultra-wide shooter, a telephoto camera, and a micro shooter.

Additionally, Realme 6-series phones will come with 90Hz refresh rate screen and a hole-punch design. While the Pro variant will have two selfie shooters, the Realme 6 will house a single shooter on the front. Further, the resolution of the display is said to be full-HD+. This is not all, Realme has also teased support for 30W fast charging.

A recent report indicated that Realme will sell the Realme 6-series phone via both e-retailers and offline stores. This is not a surprise, given company has long started selling phones offline. In terms of the pricing, the Realme 6 Pro is expected to start at Rs. 13,999, whereas the Realme 6 will reportedly retail beginning at Rs. 9,999. We should get confirmed prices on March 5.

In addition to the Realme 6 Pro and Realme 6, the Chinese smartphone maker will also unveil the Realme Band wearable at the launch event. It is teased to include a heart-rate sensor, colour display, IP68 water resistance. Additionally, the Realme Band is confirmed to be offered in three colour options – Yellow, Black and Olive Green. In terms of the fitness tracking capabilities, Realme is bundling nine modes to track different activities, including a Cricket mode. The smart band will also show notifications from your connected smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy M31 launched in India: Price, specifications

Samsung Galaxy M31 made its India debut this week as the successor to Galaxy M30 that was launched last year. The phone also improves on Galaxy M30s, which was launched as an upgraded version of Galaxy M30. Samsung Galaxy M31 price in India starts at Rs. 15,999 for the 64GB storage option, while its 128GB storage model carries a price tag of Rs. 16,999. However, under an introductory offer, the company is offering a discount of Rs. 1,000 and is selling the smartphone with a starting price of Rs. 14,999. It is, however, unclear that for how long the offer will be available for consumers.

Samsung Galaxy M31 is being sold in two colour options and it can be purchased via Amazon, Samsung.com, and select offline retailers. The first sale for the phone is scheduled for March 5, 12pm (noon). In terms of the specifications, the dual-SIM (nano) Samsung Galaxy M31 runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top. Additionally, there is a 6.4-inch full-HD+ display and octa-core Exynos 9611 SoC.

Other specifications of the phone include a quad camera setup on the back with a 64-megapixel main shooter, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 5-megapixel macro shooter, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. On the front, there is a 32-megapixel selfie camera. You will also get 6,000mAh battery and a rear fingerprint sensor.

Realme X50 Pro 5G India release

Realme X50 Pro this week became the first 5G to make its debut in India. Not only the phone was officially unveiled before iQoo 3, which was also clamouring for India’s first moniker, it also went on sale first and was quickly sold out. It is unclear how many units the company has put on sale.

Realme X50 Pro price in India is set at Rs. 37,999 for the 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant, while its 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model is priced at Rs. 39,999. The top-of-the-line model with the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage configuration carries the price tag of Rs. 44,999. Realme X50 Pro 5G will now go on sale next on March 5 in the country.

Realme X50 Pro 5G First Impressions

In terms of the specifications, Realme X50 Pro 5G runs Android 10 with Realme UI on top. The phone features 6.44-inch full-HD+ (1080×2400 pixels) display with 90Hz refresh rate, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, and up to 12GB of RAM. There is also a quad rear camera setup that includes a 64-megapixel primary shooter. Additionally, Realme has included a dual selfie camera setup at the front that houses a 32-megapixel primary front shooter.

iQoo 3 makes India debut

Just a day after the entry of Realme X50 Pro, iQoo launched its iQoo 3 smartphone in India. Like the Realme phone, it also support 5G networks in one version, not that those are useful in India right now. iQoo 3’s 4G-only 8GB + 128GB variant is priced at Rs. 36,990, while the 4G-only 8GB + 256GB model carries a price tag of Rs. 39,990. The iQoo 3’s top-end 12GB + 256GB model, which comes with 5G support, will set buyers back by Rs. 44,990.

iQoo 3 First Impressions

The phone will be offered in Quantum Silver, Volcano Orange, and Tornado Black colour options, and it will go on sale in India starting March 4 at 12pm (noon) via Flipkart and the company’s official iQoo.com website. On the specs front, iQoo 3 runs Android 10 with the iQoo UI 1.0 on top. It packs a 6.44-inch full-HD+ (1080 x 2400 pixels) Super AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, and a quad rear camera setup.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G announced

LG unveiled a successor to its V50 ThinQ smartphone in the form of V60 ThinQ this week. The LG V60 ThinQ 5G will be available in North America, Europe, and Asia starting next month. Pricing and availability of the phone in each market will be announced locally, and the phone will be offered in Classy Blue and Classy White colour options.

LG V60 ThinQ 5G runs on Android 10, and features a 6.8-inch full-HD+ (1080×2460 pixels) Plastic OLED display. It is powered by the Snapdragon 865 SoC, paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB on board storage. LG V60 ThinQ 5G comes with triple rear camera setup with 64-megapixel main camera, 13-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a ToF sensor. The phone has a 10-megapixel front camera with f/1.9 aperture as well.

Huawei Mate Xs introduced as Huawei’s second foldable phone

Huawei had big plans for MWC Barcelona 2020, however in the wake of its cancellation, the company unveiled the new Mate Xs phone as a part of an online-only event. It is the second foldable phone from the company and keeps the same form factor as its first one. Given the Huawei Mate X was never released outside China, the Mate Xs will become the company’s first foldable to get a global release.

Purchasing an HDR Monitor: What to Look For

If you are an avid PC gamer, having the right HDR monitor will improve your immersion into the game by offering richer colors and more distinct depth. While HDR televisions have been around for many years, HDR monitors have only been on the market for a few. With this helpful guide, you will know why you should consider purchasing an HDR monitor and what to look for.

What Is an HDR Monitor?

HDR stands for high dynamic range, not to be confused with HD. For many, HDR is a somewhat confusing subject. In its most basic design, HDR is meant to increase the richness and color depth of images. While 4K televisions and monitors have been stealing attention over the last couple of years, HDR monitors have the power to dramatically improve the graphic’s resolution of movies, TV shows, and games above what 4K monitors can offer.

Until a couple of years ago, there was no set standard for HDR monitors. In 2017, VESA unveiled its DisplayHDR standards with three certification levels. You can read about those here.

The numbers you see above stand for the brightness level, measured in nits. Manufacturers must meet these, along with bit depth, black levels, and gamut standards and minimums. These are strict standards that have been put in place by VESA. They are so strict, only around nine HDR monitors meet the standards as of now.

What Is an HDR Monitor

What Should You Look for in an HDR Monitor?

Purchasing a monitor can be a bit confusing, and throwing HDR in the mix makes things even more puzzling for many people. While we cannot offer an exhaustive review of all the monitors on the market, we are here to give you a strong foundation of information to be used in making a purchase. The following offers some insight that should help you better understand what to look for.

Color Gamut – This is one of the first considerations when choosing an HDR monitor. As we mentioned above, HDR has the capability to offer much richer color schemes and it can do that because it shows more colors than an SDR monitor.

When you are looking at the specs for an HDR monitor, you will likely see a percentage of the color gamut. The closer the monitor is to 100%, the better the color range which will offer more detail and brilliance to the images being displayed. It is important you at least purchase a P3 standard color gamut monitor or you will find the images displayed are lacking in color vibrancy.

Bit Depth – Another thing you will want to consider is bit depth. Bit depth is the number of bits of information that will be used by the monitor to display images. When shopping for an HDR monitor, it is important to choose one that is at least 10-bit. If you can find a 12-bit, this will be even better, but there are few on the market at this time.

Backlighting – HDR will never look as amazing as its potential without the right lighting source to offer plenty of brightness. Many monitors today use edge lighting which includes LED lights running down both sides of the monitor. It is these lights that illuminate the pixels on the monitor to be able to show the full gamut of colors. Television manufacturers have recently begun doing away with edge lighting and are focusing on creating televisions with backlit zones that are often referred to as full-array local dimming. This type of backlighting helps to lower darker areas on the screen and make the colors that are at the forefront come to life and seem to “pop” more.

While there are few monitors that offer this backlighting scheme, more manufacturers are stepping up to the plate. When choosing a multiple-zone backlit monitor, it is important to choose one that offers as many backlit zones as possible. With more zones in place, the monitor will be able to display images and offer dynamic range and contrast more accurately.

Brightness – While backlighting is important, it is nothing if the monitor cannot go bright enough. While some televisions and monitors can go as high as 1000 nits, the average low-end monitor is not going to be any brighter than 200-300 nits.

It can be a bit confusing when you are looking at PC monitor specs. Some monitor manufacturers are touting they are HDR without being able to reach the high level of brightness that is needed for ultra-color definition.

As we mentioned above, VESA’s standards for HDR monitors will likely become the standard for all PC monitors in the future. Already, we are beginning to see manufacturers comply with VESA’s standards, including Phillips and AOC.

If you truly want the HDR experience to be fully maximized, you need to choose a monitor that offers around 1000 nits. If the brightness is too low, you really are not going to be able to experience pure HDR in all its glory.

Just to recap the information above, consider the following when purchasing an HDR monitor.

Try to choose a monitor with 1000 nit brightness. Do not accept any monitor below 600 nits.

Choose a 10-bit panel for the best results. You can also choose an 8-bit plus 2-bit.

Pick a monitor with at least 90% coverage of the P3 color gamut.

Look out for imposters. What we mean by this, is manufacturers are stating they are HDR when they are only boasting of an increased color gamut over SDR monitors. While color is important, if you truly want to be able to tell you have an HDR monitor, then it is all about the brightness level.

As with any gaming gear purchase, it is crucial you carefully research the options that are available. There are now more HDR monitors available than ever before, and we would like to provide you with a rundown on some of the top choices. Before you even start the process of purchasing an HDR monitor, make sure you have a graphics card that supports HDR. The following are some of the best monitors on the market.

Samsung 32-Inch CHG70
