Where did the majority of your clothes come from? Not one single place. I like getting clothes from a variety of shops and I'm not picky with where I buy them.
Have you ever attempted to sculpt something from ice? I've never done that, but that sounds like an interesting class to take now that I think about it.
What's so amazing about Shark Week? I never learned what that is actually.
Do you wear sunglasses in the winter? You should. We don't have winter, and sunglasses and I don't make a good pair (hehe) because then I have to take off my glasses and I wouldn't be able to see anything anyway.
Have you ever had to wear an oxygen mask? No, never had to.
Do you have a dreamcatcher? I do.
Is there someone you ALWAYS bump heads with? No. I hate conflict and try to go about disagreements in a calm way.
What's your favorite thing you own that YOU made? I don't think there is anything.
Have you ever starved yourself? Yeah...
What do you spend all of your money on? Mostly on food, if I do spend; but I'm sure once BTS is back I'll be spending on K-pop again lol. I'm happy with my little hiatus for now.
Do you like Robot Chicken? I don't know what that is.
What movie character would you like to be a part of your family? Not a movie, but Clunkers the dog from Friends haha. And the dog that Phoebe got Joey when he got all sad over Rachel.
What's the last thing you were an audience of? Seventeen concert last January.
Has anyone ever had to physically restrain you from doing something? Sure.
Do you raise your voice when you get angry? No. I only do when I'm angry and feel like I'm getting interrupted or talked over.
Do you like the pretzel M&Ms? I've never tried them but they sound kinda delicious.
Have you ever been accused of thinking you're too good for something? Well I don't think I'm a master of anything, so.
Do your scars tell sad or happy stories? My one notable scar is just an annoying story of a distant cousin who didn't know how to behave around people and was not supervised properly by his parents.
Have you ever walked straight into a wall/door? I don't think I have haha.
Have you ever been embarrassed to have a crush on someone? Little bit.
Is there anything you're trying to move on from? Continued from a few days ago idk how long. Just the whole craziness of how Wrestlemania 40's been, although it's safe to assume I won't be able to for a while haha.
Have you ever stolen someone's boyfriend? Nope.
Are you careful with your words? As much as possible.
Do you have a locket? What's the picture inside of it? Nope.
Describe the most interesting vehicle you've ever seen. Nothing comes to mind right now...
Would you be afraid to take a public bus anywhere? Have never taken a bus besides the private buses we'd have for like school field trips or whatever lol. Just seems too dangerous to me plus I'll never know if I'm sitting beside a pervert man.
Have you ever given anything to someone who is homeless? Before I used to give change and snacks, but for safety reasons I've stopped.
What are you feeling, right now? Elated from Wrestlemania weekend, happy that we have two holiday weekdays this week so I don't get to go back to work til Thursday.
How do you react when you feel embarrassed about something? I guess it depends what kind of embarrassed it is? There's the light-hearted kind in which I just laugh it off, then there's like a checking-on-someone's-grandma-not-knowing-she-died embarrassed that makes me want to quit socializing.
Have you ever tried to 'fix' someone? Yes.
What's in your copy and paste? A link to a wrestling streaming site.
How many stuffed animals do you own, and what are they? I have lke 5 BT21 plushies, some of Tata and others of Koya.
When's the last time you were carried by someone? Three weeks ago when we had our company outing, and I was the one who led our dodgeball team to victory lol. All those lunch periods in third grade spent playing dodgeball were finally ROI'd haha
Have you ever accidentally taken a shower with like your underwear left on, or something? Not my underwear but I've turned on the shower with my glasses on, heh.
Can you twirl things well? Like, just noodles I guess? I don't really...twirl things on a regular basis.
Do you have bangs? I had them like a week before the pandemic kicked in so no one ever really saw them lol. I got rid of them halfway through 2021 and it was still pandemic-y at the time, so at the end of the day no one ever really saw me in bangs. I'm still a little peeved about it HAHA
Have you ever seen someone who wore a real eyepatch? I knew a kid in school who did. She was also one of my sister's close friends.
What started the last 'cat-fight' you were involved in? I've never been in a catfight.
Would you agree that it's extremely disrespectful to 'test' someone in a relationship? I wouldn't call it disrespectful but I do find it a waste of time. Just address things head-on; communicate.
Do you go all out on dressing up for pep-rallies and the like? I never attended pep rallies when I was in college.
What's in your locker? I haven't had a locker since 2016.
Are you in possession of any currency that isn't used in your country? I have a Korean won bill that Angela got me a few years ago; I also have a handful of Thai baht coins left.
Did anyone witness your last kiss? Doubt it.
Do you remember Hamtaro? No.
What about Peewee Hermin? Yeah I know Peewee. He was associated with WWE for a time and afaik one of my fav wrestlers used to be obsessed with him haha.
Do you have any younger siblings? I have two.
Are you cool with them, or do they annoy you to no end? My sister and I are close.
Do you know anyone with a kind of creepy smile? Eh, no.
Anyone with Bieber Fever? Sure! I know a few who grew up with JB and still have a soft spot for their Bieber fevers. I find it generally endearing how people my age have been rediscovering our old interests, just now in a much more unashamed light :)
Have you tried Cupcake Pebbles cereal? I don't think so.
What's your favorite ride at an amusement park? Whatever that's not a rollercoaster or those rides that shoot all the way down at like 500 kph lmao. Basically anything that takes it easy on my sensitive motion sickness.
Last person you flipped off? Idk probably a driver.
Have you ever been on TV? No. I've been behind the camera during live news programs though.
Are you currently distancing yourself from anyone? Yes.
Trying to get close to anyone? Nope.
Anyone who's way over protective of you? My parents have considerably toned down but they are still a bit protective.

But thats because I, personally, am on the fence about the concept of monogamy. Like no, I’ve never cheated nor experienced that in return - but the whole concept of monogamy and like that a person can love and only love or be with one person is WILLLLDDD and I can’t help but note that its a social construct that we, as a society, are conditioned to from the time we are born. Idk if that makes sense bc im high af lol but those are my thoughts…like to sum it up - cheating is fucked up and sucks, but at the same time its not all that surprising/shocking anymore, like borderline “normalized” just as divorces are and shit, so I feel like bc biologically we aren’t made to be with one person lol. I don’t condone it tho. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

The motor screaming out Stuck in second gear The scene ends badly As you might imagine In a cavalcade of anger and fear There will be feasting and dancing In Jerusalem next year
I am going to make it through this year If it kills me

Feel the prickings of my conscience in my chest Every now and then Sometimes a great wave of forgetfulness Rises up and blesses me And other times the sickness howls And I despair of any remedy

When I get home after dark Sit looking up at the stars outside Like teeth in the mouth of a shark I used to live here I used to live here I used to live here

1: What would you name your future daughter? Winter/Talvi

On Friday morning, we hopped into the car bright and early when all the radio shows were playing the catchy end of the week song: “It’s Aloha Friday! No work ’til Monday!” A great way to jump start our hiking adventures on Kauai.
Any Aloha…
Kauai Hike #1: Hanakapiai Falls Trail We hiked 8 miles round trip to the freezing cold Hanakaipiai waterfall. The trail was steep, slippery, but oh so green and full of staggering beauty. One of best things about hiking in Hawaii is here aren’t any dangerous bugs or venomous snakes in the wild that will kill you. But definitely stay out of the water when there are signs posted everywhere telling hikers not to swim!
Ready to go!
Our first glimpse of the Napali coast cliffs
Micah: “I should tell my dad about the goats here.” Ching: “Does he really like goats?” Micah: “No, he hunts them.”
After reading that sign, no one dared to swim in these waters…
Island cats!
“What do you want me to do? Dress in drag and do the hula?” -Timon
We “think” this old structure used to be for making coffee…
The destination: We climbed over rocks and weaved through trees and roaring streams to get to Hanakaipiai falls and jump into this freezing cold water. It was totally worth it.
It’s me!
After our hike, we chilled at Hanakapiai Beach. Apparently it’s a sacred place to do hula on Kauai…but instead of doing hula, I fell asleep on the beach. No surprise there.
I interrupt this blog post to tell you about Kauai wild chickens! One of the most charming things about Kauai is the abundance of wild chickens. As legend has it, in 1982, a big hurricane destroyed a chicken farm on Kauai–and all of the chickens were set free! I counted 12 chickens on the 5 minute ride from the airport to Micah’s Grandma’s house alone.
The wild chickens amused me so much, and I had a lot of fun taking pictures of them whenever I caught them in a rare moment of stillness. (Why yes, I did spent a lot of time chasing after chickens to get a good picture.)
We stopped here to use the bathroom before hike #2. No swimming though because hammerhead sharks like to hang around here!
Kauai Hike #2: Honopu Ridge This hike is actually a hunter’s trail. There are wild boar and goats in these parts. The actual trail was difficult to find, and we only saw 4 other hikers on our journey. This was the most frustrating hike of my life because for 75% percent of the trip, we were hiking through literal thorns bushes. (I regretted hiking in shorts and a sports bra almost immediately.) But hiking through thorns was SO worth it for these views.
Lookin’ good in our new HiLife hats!
See where the water is breaking? That’s one of the caves from PotC 4!
A+ lunch view
Megan summoning the fog
We ended our Saturday night by drinking fruity Hawaiian beer and watching the sunset at the most western point in the U.S. Not too shabby!
Sunset over Polihale Beach
On Sunday, we wanted to check out the Botanical Gardens, but of course they were too expensive. (Like $40 entrance fee for one and $60 for another.) Harumph. So we made our own fun in the free sections instead!
Megan and Becca Bamboo
Monk Seal sleeping like the dead at Poipu Beach
Kauai Hike #3: Sunrise hike I take it back. This was the worst hike of my life. We woke up at 4 am on Monday so we could hike a couple miles up hill to see the sunrise. It was hot and humid on our way up, but it didn’t start raining until we reached the summit. Then it was so slippery on our way down and I slipped and fell right on my butt and ended up covered in dirt and mud.
My crazy hair tells you how windy it was at the top!
On Thursday, we drove to see Wailua Waterfall–Wailua means 2 waters, 2 falls. A few months back, one doofus from California decided to jump the 200 foot waterfall. He was incredibly lucky to survive…
You can swim, but don’t jump!
Kauai Coffee Company!
Kauai Hike #5: Kayaking the Wailua River and a short hike to Secret Falls
Despite doing the sea-kayak marathon on Amami last year, this kayaking adventure left us exhausted.
Secret Falls…which really aren’t so secret at all. There were many a tour group…and chickens!
Friday was our last day. Megan and Ching had an early morning flight back to Japan… A hui hou kakou–until we meet again, friends!
And on my 13th morning in Hawaii, I was finally able to catch a sunrise.
Wondering why I jumped from hike #3 to hike #5? Because I’m saving the best for last that’s why! Next stop: hiking the entirety of the Kalalau Trail.
Stay tuned!
Pt 2: Hiking Kauai and Other Adventures On Friday morning, we hopped into the car bright and early when all the radio shows were playing the catchy end of the week song: "It's Aloha Friday!

April
Well, April was a month!! It disappeared so quickly. And now its may, and I’m on another ridiculously turbulent flight down to Dunedin this time - first time ever going there! So I shall write a life update to distract myself in the interim.
I also ate best ugly bagels at the airport and got jam on my screen so it’s all sticky. Bad planning yo.
Oh April! We started off with three days up in auckland for work. Damn was I hanging out for those three days, in the peace and quiet of a hotel room, away from everyone and normal life and the office and dare I even say it, Dave. And it was lovely. The humidity was most definitely not! But it was great getting to be up there and hanging out with people and getting to know their jobs a bit better as well. I got a lot of stuff done and it was so good to just be able to walk out of the office and go home and not have to be anything to anyone and just journal and watch what I wanted to on Netflix and so much other good shit.
The downside was I got sick - boo. Got back to Wellington and a cranky boyfriend and oh my god this plane wants to kill us all. Jeepers.
I went to a first aid course the next day deaf in one ear, and by the time I got to work on Friday could hardly hear in either ear! Anyway, ear infections usually clear up quickly for me which is good because then it was HOLIDAY TIME!! and by holiday I mean road trip up north to Taupo and Rotorua and Auckland. Primarily for Auckland zoo and Kelly tarltons because let’s be real all Dave and I care about are cute fluffy animals. Except, then, on top of everything else arrives a chest and sinus infection. #allclass #gobigorgohome
Which actually turned out to not be such a disaster because it meant we actually slowed the f down, and didn’t try and cram a million things in and we didn’t feel bad about staying in bed til 9am every day and going to bed early. So we spent a lot of time in hot pools and just wandering slowly and I went on swings in every single city we went to. Man, swings are just so much fun! I seriously want a decent set in our back yard.
Taupo was lovely and we had such nice weather. I really like it as a laid-back country kinda vibe. Its a great place to mosey round and read some books and just relax. Quest was awesome too. Both of us were just so excited to have a big bathroom again!! Honestly, its so the little things in life that make you happy. We also had a washing machine and dryer as well which was fabulous!
We drove up to Auckland on the Monday and oh my god, so many roadworks. We hadn’t even made it to Auckland and both of us were just like, f living here ever (no offence aucklanders, but your traffic is shit and your city is so badly laid out). Auckland zoo was cool but OH MY GOD so many freaking rat???? Like, literally ever single enclosure had multiple rats in it!! It turned into spot the rat not the animals actually there. And proper big, 20 cm long body rats, not little field mice or anything. Groooosssss.
And then to make it the perfect storm of health things, I got my period on the drive up, LOL. poor Dave, he never gets laid on holiday. I don’t know we always manage it but we do. Crack up.
The hotel was good, the fact it had two bedrooms was awesome and we had a washing machine in our room as well?? Nailed the washing on this trip, honestly. I basically wore the same three things the whole time. #lazyas
We decided Waiheke was too far (lol, that’s how lazy we were) so we did Devonport instead which was lovely. And had a great playground with fab swings (a+ recommend if looking for swings in Auckland)
Omg this plane is rocking like a boat it’s the weirdest sensation.
We also went to Kelly tarltons where we bought Bruce, a massive soft toy shark!! He’s so amazing, he’s my new cuddle buddy at night, he’s almost as long as I am. Poor Steve has been demoted (Steve being the dugong Dave and I bought on our first ever trip overseas to Sydney). It was hilarious because we went on the morning that tropical cyclone cook was meant to hit Auckland and they were banging on about how terrible it was going to be for Auckland so everyone mass evacuated (sensible, because if our office up there is anything to go by, no one had emergency kits or would know how to get home if anything actually went wrong). So everyone is stocking up on groceries and water and food, and then there’s me and Dave wandering up Queen Street after going to a pharmacy for more drugs (Dave was sick too by now) and me with a giant soft toy shark. We got some odd looks man. It was great! We went back to the hotel and celebrated by watching finding Nemo waiting for the worst of the weather to pass. After that we went to town and played minigolf and got burgers for dinner. All in all it was a very us five year anniversary. Speaking of which, we had our five year anniversary WHAAAAAAAAATTTT where did those five years even go?!?! God I love that boy.
The next day we joined the rest of Auckland evacuating for easter weekend and it took 6 hours to get to Rotorua (usually 2.5). So stupid. Dave was definitely sick because at that point for the first time ever he actually slept in the car. Crazy. It was a really fun drive though Google maps took us on all these mental back roads that were flooded and had trees down and fun crazy stuff so I had a good time. We spent a night in rotovegas with my mental family which was lovely and my uncle finally gave me a prescription for antibiotics (cheers to having a doctor in the family). We went back to Taupo for another night and cruised on home.
It was all rather lovely, despite being so sick.
And then it’s been back to work and the busyness and the rest of life.
One of the best things about April was doing my best to deal with the small things for my mental health, which has been pretty shaky over the last 8 weeks. I knew that after my birthday I needed extra help because #life and not coping, and I found a fucking AMAZING naturopath who I just love so much. She’s been so helpful and supportive. I went to her originally for my anxiety and crazy overthinking and she does homeopathic stuff and whatever she gave me fixed it within a week. Well, fixed it as in it took away the total panic from the overthinking, not that the anxiety has gone away but the whole ‘sky is falling down feeling’s disappeared enough to allow some rational thought back in. I went back on Anzac Day (bless her, she came in for an appointment just for me because we couldn’t make a workday work) and was like, so you said responsibility like, 40 times the other week, let’s look at that, and now we’re working through my hating the system feeling, and dealing with all the suppression that came with working at shit old job and various other life situations.
One of the biggest things I’m struggling with right now is hating the system that society has designed. like, who the fuck ever thought it was a good idea to work 40 hours a week and create a world where people can’t achieve self fulfillment and why don’t we let people work to their natural strengths and why do you have to own a house to be an adult and all this other fucking nonsense. And how do you live a life of your terms but also somehow within the system and cultural norms as well because I don’t want to be an outsider but there’s so many things I don’t agree with and how are so many people ok with sneidng kids to school hungry each day and just, whyyyyyyyyyyy do we all exist and why have we created this inequity and inequality in life?! Like, I don’t get it and I don’t know how to live in it and I don’t know how you’re meant to bring kids up ok this and so many other things ya know.
So just like, not tackling the big issues or anything at all.
Actually, I was watching Moana on Saturday night and just bawling my eyes out because its so reflective of life - the world is telling you to be this and this and this and this and somehow you have to find the courage to be like, nah, fuck off mate, I’m Gunna go sail my ship far away from y'all and see what needs doing somewhere else.
So Sophie, god bless her soul, I absolutely love her, and she tells me I’m not crazy, and I’m not losing my shit, and that while there’s not necessarily an answer we can still deal with it and cope with feelings and also she’s been there and done that and that it will get better.
And I’m so, so grateful I’ve found her. I’m also grateful for all the ladies in my life who have put up with these brutally honest conversations in my life, and let me cry over lunch, and who are working through all their own things and still manage to hold space for me, and who create space for laughter and silliness as well. I’m so grateful for Dave who is willing to just ride the wave with me and go with it. That boy puts up with so much from me and just takes it and goes with it and doesn’t complain. Work has likewise been amazing. I told my boss I was losing my shit internally and I was going to be disappearing for a few hours each week to sort myself out and he was so upset with himself because he’d asked how everyone else was doing but he hadn’t asked me how I was. Even more so he was like, what can we do for you, do you need work from home days, do you need time in other offices, do you not want to travel, just let me know what you need and I will make it happen. Which was fucking lovely.
I also took a month of fitbit and stressing about my weight and I bought new clothes that make me feel good and it’s so much nicer than loathing yourself every single day and cramming yourself into something too small and pretending like it’s ok.
PRAISE BE JESUS WE HAVE FINALLY LANDED.
I apologise for all the typos, I’ll try and fix them at some point. That was a seriously bumpy flight. Amen for antianxiety pills that make it all ok.
Now I just have to turn around and do it all again in 10 hours time.

Rangers roar into trade deadline with win over Sharks
There were denials across the board — nope, no way, in no shape or form were the Rangers thinking about the fact that this was their final game before Monday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, and how everything could be different when they suit up again for Tuesday match against the Islanders out at the Coliseum.
The words were the same across the board, from the coach down to the phenomenal rookie Russian goalie, that the ugly 3-2 victory over the Sharks on Saturday night was just another step in the right direction for a team that is learning how to win games when they don’t have their best, and the focus remains on their surprising push towards the playoffs.
“There’s always something,” said Chris Kreider, the main focus of the next few days when he will likely either sign a contract extension or get traded. “Part of professional hockey is finding a way to block all the extra B.S. out and find a way to get the job done.”
The leader in getting the job done has been Igor Shesterkin, who made 44 saves to win for the ninth time in his first 10 NHL starts. The Rangers (33-24-4) have now won 7 of 8, 8 of 10 and 10 of 13. They climbed to within four points of the second wild-card spot, and that’s one way to keep out the noise.
“The way to block it out is to play good hockey and win,” Kreider said. “And we’ve done that over the past few weeks, and we want to continue to do that.”
Alternate captain Jesper Fast gets mobbed by teammates after scoring one of his two goals in the Rangers’ 3-2 win over the Sharks.Paul J. Bereswill
Only thing is that there are no more games between now and the deadline. There is no easy work to be done for the players to keep the thoughts out of their heads during the off day on Sunday, or during what is often one of the strangest practice days of the year with the deadline just hours away on Monday.
“There’s a lot to write about, and [the media] is busy the next 48 hours, as you should be,” coach David Quinn said. “But we’re going to practice on Monday and play the Islanders on Tuesday.”
Who, exactly, will be playing the Islanders is hard to guess. The Rangers didn’t seem to mind risking injury to all of their possible trade pieces, which, beyond Kreider, includes about half the roster. Jesper Fast made a good case for his value to a contender by potting two goals against the Sharks, the first a tap-in on a great feed from the reigniting Artemi Panarin (two assists) which gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 9:35 of a first period when they were outshot, 22-3.
“I just have to thank him for that,” Fast said about Panrin, now with 83 points on the season. “Every time he has the puck, something good is happening.”
Shesterkin then had his first real soft goal of his career, Joe Thornton sneaking one under his right arm from the left circle at 17:55 of the first. And then Thornton got another when a rebound went off his shin pad for a power-play goal at 13:47 of the second — doubling the 40-year-old’s season goal total, now at four.
But Shesterkin made a couple of outstanding saves, denying Thornton from in front to keep it close in the first, and then stopping Evander Kane on two separate breakaways in the first and second, respectively.
It allowed Panarin to sweep the puck off Kane’s stick and directly to Mika Zibanejad for a slam-dunk at 17:27 of the second that tied it, 2-2, and then Fast to get the game-winner a hack job from in front at 6:54 of the third — a dirty goal to win a dirty game when the Rangers were outshot, 46-33, and out-attempted 75-50.
But that ended the hockey portion of the pre-deadline schedule. Even if Quinn was right in saying “this has been a completely different feeling than last year,” the winning now takes a back seat to the business.
“Our guys are just going along,” Quinn said. “We’re here ’til we’re not.”

Boat Life Lessons: Vol 1
First of all, I need to disclaim this entire blog as anything remotely close to a source of expert advice or opinion. It is not. For those of you with any experience with boats/sailing, please humor my ineptitude and laugh with me as I learn by doing. Writing things down helps me to remember, and my goal is to share with you in a way that's not technical, mostly topical, and at best, might make you smile the next time you find yourself in similar straits.
So now, I trust I will make at least one person #facepalm reading this list of 5 Things I've Learned Since Moving onto a Sea Cadillac with a Stranger Last Saturday (11/11).
Please let me know if you're that person.
5 Things I've Learned Since Moving into a Sea Cadillac with a Stranger Last Saturday
Said stranger seems to be (so far) a laid-back, kind, experienced captain... thank you universe
The day you think you'll leave port is not going to be the day you actually leave port
The importance (and volatility) of wind maps
The Boatyard has better oysters than McGarvey's
Do not flush tampons down the boat toilet
1. Said stranger seems to be (so far) a laid-back, kind, experienced captain... thank you universe
There are a hundred really good reasons not to fly across the country to meet a complete stranger you found on a Crew Finder forum on Facebook, or to move onto a sailboat with that stranger after a handful of phone calls to sail said boat across the Atlantic... especially when your sailing experience is 100% limited to Lake Travis in landlocked Austin, Texas.
So arguably the most important thing I learned this week is that Ben-- Captain Ben, formally-- is a kind, rad person; someone I already call friend.
Over beers and oysters and milling around in a boat together for a week in Annapolis, here’s what I can surmise so far (Ben, thank you for humoring me):
Ben grew up on a surfboard in Cape Town. He got started sailing ~12 years ago delivering boats around the South African horn, and has since racked up 160,000+ nautical miles at sea delivering, chartering, and racing boats around the Atlantic and Indian oceans. No big deal.
Through his job-- delivering boats around the Caribbean and beyond-- he's no stranger to skippering with novice crew. Even more, his crowd-sourced crew come from various walks of life: 52-year old ladies seeking adventure; 19-year-old boys seeking the same; military retirees, vagabonding couples, soul-searching singles... a revolving door of characters with whom he’s had to share limited space. So it's no small wonder that a marina regular described him to me as “a cross between Jesus and Captain Ron, yannoe?“.
Ben has dreams of buying his own boat, and making his way through Panama to the Pacific in the foreseeable future. His favorite show is Food, Booze and Tattoos on Netflix, because it reminds him of home. He spends about 1/4 of any sentence speaking in onomatopoeias ("we were trying to get there quick, right? Like tchk-tchk-tchk")... which he attributes in part to growing up near cultures where whistles and clicks are the language itself.
Other confidence-boosting details, Mom:
His first priority is safety. "We're not going out into fuck-all weather just to make dates work."
His #1 Rule: Don't fall off the boat.
We've had candid conversations about hard things: respect, trust, setting expectations, how we communicate/take feedback, personal space. Critical when your home is sub-300 sq ft.
This gig includes a lot of alone time at sea as we swap between watches. So it's been cool to be able to get to know each other before taking to the water... but for Ben, planning for a few days to acclimate/evaluate each other is just best practice; an MO that's helped him avoid some otherwise sketchy crew.
So, so far so good. Taking everything a day at a time. Especially because:
2. The day you think you'll leave port is not going to be the day you actually leave port.
It's only the second time this has happened to me personally, but the pattern seems apt (the first was when an imminent squall postponed our boat voyage from Whittier, AK to the oyster farm by a week). Now on this exceptionally gusty Sunday in Annapolis, we should have left 4 days ago.
But the more reliant you are on a boat, the more bound to favorable conditions your plans must become. Favorable conditions that must come into magical alignment include:
Legal conditions: For us, this means the owner of the boat closes on the boat, finalizes paperwork, makes sure that all the toys, bells and whistles are aboard
Mechanical/electrical conditions: We're prepping a brand new boat for it's maiden voyage. So making sure before we're out there in the middle of endless blue for the first time that the boat itself works and functions as it's been sold to.
Wind/weather conditions: Perhaps the most obvious, but also the most important. Favorable in our case means the wind itself is not going to be gusting at 40+ knots (like it is today), completely against you, or at least "off the beam", meaning the wind is at least coming at an angle that isn't diametrically opposite your heading (stay tuned for edits/corrections).
Our situation has been such that the most favorable few days of wind (that would have sent us safely cruising south through the open Atlantic) occurred while awaiting the first two conditions to be met. So although I arrived a week ago, only two days ago did the legal stuff get sorted, and only yesterday did we realize the port thruster wasn't working... yay new boats!!!
Today, Sunday 11/19 it looks like we won't be setting off 'til tomorrow, the 20th, when weather finally looks agreeable enough to scoot down the Chesapeake, then hug the eastern seaboard to the Carolinas. We'll wait out some ugly bouts of low pressure, and then set off south toward Grenada.
But again. One day at a time.
Looking at the weather charts, it looks like it's going to be a hell of a ride down...
3. Always do your research before you leave port... and do it often
On the boat, Ben checks the wind forecast every few hours on his iPad the same way that some people check Facebook. He's looking for critical changes in forecasts that dictate how and when we'll leave. But with everything being up in the air (lol)/anyone's guess, there are several apps in particular that he trolls regularly throughout:
Navionics - for plotting a course, navigating underwater channels and routes
PocketGRIB - for forecasting areas of Low and High pressure, wind, precipitation, etc.
WindFinder - another wind forecasting tool, different datasets
PredictWind Offshore - another wind forecasting tool, but my favorite... because color
I asked him to explain Sunday's PocketGRIB predictions along the route:
youtube
And another video of Ben purely to showcase him saying ‘Bahamamamas’:

4. The Boatyard has better oysters than McGarvey's
In the 5 days of prep and idle time here in Annapolis, Ben and I may have eaten somewhere in the ballpark of 40-45 oysters between these two Happy Hour hideouts... for about $40-45.
McGarvey's (James River oysters, wild) - These wild harvested oysters are toothy to bite but almost bland, and definitely not briny (because a river, perhaps?)... their shallow, round shells don't retain their liquor well once opened, so eat hastily lest they get too dry as you admire them. Found a good few anemones still attached to the shells, a testament to their natural habitat of the shallow, brackish river estuary. (That said, below is a picture of the... third... time we got oysters from McGarvey’s. This time, Ben ordered 2 doz to go, still in shells. And then magic
Boatyard (Chesapeake Bay oysters) - Also wild caught oysters, but the taste and presentation overall wins me over (I am a shucker, after all...) Clean cuts, light brine (further out into open salt water), and lots of liquor. These oysters tasted like kissing the Chesapeake itself. And the cucumber mignonette!!!!!
And last but not first:
5. Do not flush tampons down the boat toilet.
I repeat: do not flush tampons down the toilet. FYI, a boat toilet is called the 'head', so do not flush tampons down the head. So now you know. Just don't do it. Because then, you'd have to have that awkward conversation with the boat captain, whom you just met, at 9 in the morning over coffee, that not only are you on your period, but that your Shark Week weapon of choice is now jamming the brand new $800k cruising yacht's toilet macerator. And you've been here 1 day.
Luckily, this is not his (Ben, the captain's) first rodeo. On our way back to the boat, we pass a dock-neighbor who's getting rid of some coat hangers. Ben suggests using one to make a hook of sorts, and 5 minutes of fishing later, I triumphantly retrieve a *thankfully* white wad of cotton from the depths. At that moment I'm caught in a strange mix of feeling fucking awesome and fucking disgusting as I realize I now need to disinfect EVERYTHING around me in this tiny fiberglass bathroom.
And that's just Day 1.
Honestly, that should be the case for every toilet I KNOW. I KNOW. Never again.
Fuck tampons anyway (this girl gets it)

Rhyme of the Chivalrous Shark
Most chivalrous fish of the ocean To ladies forbearing and mild, Though his record be dark, is the man-eating shark, Who will eat neither woman nor child. He dines upon seamen and skippers, And tourists his hunger assuage, And a fresh cabin boy will inspire him with joy If he's past the maturity age. A doctor, a lawyer, a preacher, He'll gobble one any fine day, But the ladies, God bless 'em He'll only address 'em Politely and go on his way. I can readily cite you an instance Where a lovely young lady of Breem, Who was tender and sweet and delicious to eat Fell into the bay with a scream. She struggled and flounced in the water, And signaled in vain for her bar, And she'd surely been drowned if she hadn't been found By a chivalrous man-eating shark. He bowed in a manner most polished Thus soothing her impulses wild. "Don't be frightened," he said, "I've been properly bred, And will eat neither woman nor child." Then her proffered his fin and she took it Such gallantry none can dispute. While the passengers cheered as the vessel they neared And a broadside was fired in salute. And they soon stood alongside the vessel, When a life-saving dinghy was lowered With the pick of the crew, And her relatives too And the mate and the skipper aboard. So they took her aboard in a jiffy, And the shark stood attention the while, Then he raised on his flipper and ate up the skipper And went on his way with a smile. And this shows that the prince of the ocean, To ladies forbearing and mile, Though his record be dark Is the man-eating shark, Who will eat neither woman nor child.
