Goodish night having pulled my bois de lit (in comfort here with each of us a bois de lit) into the middle of my room – Not bit at all – Breakfast at 10 1/4 to 11 1/4 – A[Ann] tolerably right again I took no notice of last night   she wrong at my spending the money on the eggs if I would not eat them her mind is not large as to little matters – Traineau in waiting from 12 1/2 – Wrote the last 2 pp.[pages] till now 12 40/’’ – Fine day – Reaumur 10 1/2º at 8 3/4 a.m. on the window seat in my room and Reaumur 13 1/2º 1/4 hour afterwards close to my bedhead between 2 stoves – And Reaumur -27 1/2º dehors to the North at 11 a.m. according to George who took (as usual) the thermometer out of doors – 

Out at 1 to 3 40/’’ Off from Simbirsk (Pronounced Sim-beersk) at 5 10/’’ – Very fine day – Very fine afternoon and evening – Sun sinking beautifully as we drive off – Out from 1 to 3 40/’’ – 1st Southwards to the high ground along the Volga – what a noble river! – 3 versts over to village on the other side rather to the North – The river overflows up to the mountains and is 20 v.[versts] wide to the ft.[foot] of the mountains – The villages are just out of water – Cannot stir from there but in boats – 2 large islands near the city – Islands overflowed on the tops of the brushwood above water –

Right bank every where high, and left bank highish a little to the North of the city – Sviaga river 2 v.[versts] from Volga just of the city to the North – Drove Southward along the high ground over the Volga – Gardens and orchards and magnificent view along the river North and South – We drove down upon the Sviaga (which does not divide the town – Vide Geography Dictionary of Russia) – The Town lies on high ground between the 2 rivers and the basse ville and one or more churches along the waters edge of the Volga, and a village like Slobode where horses are kept and sold, is divided from the few houses on this side of the Town by the Sviaga across which is a wood bridge and direct road to Moscow – On the low ground near the Sviaga is the prison a square enclosure with a square Tower 6 yards square at each corner and space between = 5 towers or 5 x 6 = 30 yards + 6 x 2 = 42 yards – Tops of Towers flat or so nearly so, roofs not visible from below – 2 chimneys on the top of the Tower next to us – One large arched gateway into the prison – A plain but handsome looking building – 

A little farther on, the cemetery full of tombs square pointed roofs on 4 wood colours or 4 brick white washed pillars more than 1/2 tombs of this sort – The cemetery covered with them – Singular appearance – Not a single tree there – The tower of the cemetery church (where the funeral service is read over the corpse) is in the middle of the building – The principal street runs parallel with the Volga with other streets parallel and other at right angles to it –

Of the churches here (17 according to our coachman, 16 according to our landlord, and 12 according to Schnitzler) only observed one in the Moscow style of the 1 large dome and 4 small one of which at each corner of the large one, that is finishing each corner of the square from which the large dome springs – The clochers here at the west end, and generally joined to the centre part of the church, i.e. the square from which the dome or sometimes 8tagon[octagon] lantern Tower springs) by a nave, and ground floor of the clocher forming a great West entrance to the church – 

Went into the Convent of Women (80 of them) walled round like all the convents and monasteries I have seen in Russia – 2 churches within the enclosure – Went into the one with clocher as just described square tower in retiring grades, finished in a sharp spire – Very picturesque – And lantern tower at the other end – From the clocher one entered a sort of vestibule chapel then the nave on church, and the lantern Tower seemed to be over the prestole – 

The other church in this convent in a square finished in a top cornice as is very frequent in these square churches of grotesque semicircular arches, the disc thro’ not said here being painted in fresco and this sort of church at Moscow University? being topped in 5 domes as above mentioned –

The effect of this outside painting is always striking and good – Is the square the oldest form of church? Was it not a square stone that Jacob set up to God in Bethel? – And is not the Kaaba at Mecca a square? And this square was roofed up to a point? – 

The Tower of Babel was one square upon another square in retiring grades, and the last grade would have finished in a pyramid point, as do so many of the Tartar remains of this day e.g. the beautiful Tower at Kazan – The Cathedral (Simbirsk or more properly Sinbirsk?) is one large dome springing from a circular base, with 4 8style[octostyle] porticos (as at Helsingfors) not yet finished inside – The dome covered with metal of a lead-like lustre – 

Our cocher (of 2 horse Traineau) said in answer to A-s[Ann’s] question, if the enormous apples mentioned by Schnitzler in his 1st vol.[volume] were grown here, yes! Apples of 1/2 ft.[foot] in diameter – Many orchards close around in the Town – The situation of the Town is very fine – All along the high bank of the Volga and at its ft.[feet] to the water’s edge of the V-[Volga] on one side, and that of the Sviaga on the other – How beautiful it must be in summer, as indeed it must be all these Towns (Nijni, Kazan, Simbirsk ….) so finely situated on this magnificent Volga – Nothing is wanting but that the precipitous heights should be of hard rock instead of marly sand – The Gastinoi Dvor large, and busy but old and much of wood and rather picturesque than good – There is a high road from Simbirsk via Samara to Orenburg about 600 v.[versts] said our landlord – A-[Ann] starved with the cold – Tea – 

Off at 5 10/’’ – Sixty villages in the immediate neighbourhood of Simbirsk were maliciously burnt down last summer our coachman or somebody told George – I should have noticed the large handsome new building for the Jurisdiction of the Free Peasants and those villages neither belonging to Government nor to Seigneurs – Tartars chiefly? Is not this the Chancellerie de Tutelle? Vide Geography Dictionary of Russia article Sarepta which has a jurisdiction of this sort at St. Petersburg – 

Off from Simbirsk at 5 10/’’ – A-‘s[Ann’s] door shut at starting – Shut mine just after writing the above notes in pencil in my rough now at 5 3/4, and Reaumur -10º lying in my open doorway – Reaumur -27º outside North this morning at 8 – Dark on arriving at Klutsitschi at 7 p.m. and lightened ourselves up – The lightened wax candle warms our Kibitka – 

I got out for a moment at Jasoschnaja to straighten my legs &c. – Largeish village? At Terenga at 11 3/4 pretty little church must be a good village? Too dark to see – Had intending going forwards – No horses – Must wait for their return till 6 in the morning – 

So drove back to the other end of the village and at the little Auberge at 12 10/’’ – Little small room but soon made ourselves very comfortable – Put our mattresses on the floor, and I lay down dressed as I was with my Chalat over me at one – A-[Ann] writing some while after – I was asleep when she lay down close by me – Very fine day –

Kong With A Shotgun:      ‘Project Godkiller’

How do you kill a living god turned against you? Make a godkiller.

Things were escalating rapidly.  The hollow earth was overrunning us, and Godzilla tired of balancing.  He turned out to be the god of destruction, but who could ever really claim to know the motivations of an eternal reptile?  All that was certain was his rising aggression meant our rising death tolls.  Oxygen destroying was costly, very messy, and the nuclear option was food to him.  What then?  We couldn’t handle this monster madness alone.  We needed big muscle to help shoulder the burden, so we helped train our own King of the Monsters.  King Kong was born.

Our ultimate desperation bled into Project Godkiller, but you don’t just build a trillion dollar gun and hand it to a monkey and see how it goes.  That would be silly.  Kong wasn’t born with a shotgun in his hands, we put it there.  When we found him, he was just throwing trees and beating things over the head with them.  He was slicing lizards up with old things he found lying around.  But there was potential, we just underestimated how much.

We built him a 40 ft. long hunting knife to test the waters, then an 80 ft. broadsword, then an axe.  We outfitted him to see how he’d handle a shield.  He handled it.  Then we started him in on 21st century modern warfare way out in the safety of the Nevada desert.  It didn’t go great.  His savagery limited an already short attention span, targeting was past his limits, and collateral damage was astronomical, but he eventually took to the shotgun well enough.  Kong With A Shotgun was born.

God hunter, condensed oxygen destroying shells.  Shards of titan piercing buckshot.  Kong loved the godkiller.  We armed our newly crowned king with the defense budget of an entire world.  Of course it all went horribly wrong.  Seeing that 300 ft. ape for a time wielding our 100 ft. shotgun was enough to rally the masses; a fanatical worship was beginning to take root that would eventually wash over us all.  

A global crisis of faith was only natural in the world we found ourselves in.  We weren’t made in the image of any of these re-emerging gods, and where was ours as they ground us to dust?  It was this existential crisis, an admittance that our world was no longer our own, which helped lead to the religion of the beast; The Order Of Kong.  Those that believed otherwise, in preserving our dignity and civility, continued along the path of the Mechagodzilla Project.  An attempt at a completely artificial man made titan.  They believed in joining us into, and dominating the new world order of living gods.  To try and hold onto that small level of control which had gone.

Still others were left out, scattered between lesser cults worshipping ‘titan this or ‘titan that’.  Bleakest of all were Godzilla’s Doomers.  Anarchist death dealers, psychotic metal heads.  Godzilla’s ‘pawns of destruction’ that welcomed the end.  All to say, this is how I learned to stop worrying, and love the batshit crazy.

Six photographer artists, Jerry Burchfield, Mark Chamberlain, Jacques Garnier, Rob Johnson, Douglas McCulloh, and Clayton Spada plus approximately 400 assistants built the world's largest pinhole camera in building #115 at El Toro using 24,000 square feet (2,200 m2) six mil black visqueen, 1,300 US gallons (4,900 l) of foam gap filler, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) of 2-inch (5.1 cm) wide black Gorilla Tape and 40 US gallons (150 l) of black spray paint to make the hangar light-tight. The camera measured 160 ft (48.76 m) wide x 45 ft (13.71 m) high x 80 ft (24.38 m) deep.[1]

A seamless piece of muslin cloth was made light sensitive by coating it with 21 US gallons (80 l) of gelatin silver halide emulsion and then hung from the ceiling at a distance of about 80 feet (24 m) from a pinhole, just under 6 millimetres (0.24 in) in diameter and situated 15 feet (4.6 m) above ground level on the hangar's metal door. The distance between the pinhole and the cloth was determined to be 55 feet (17 m) for best coverage, and the exposure time was calculated at 35 minutes.

First Drive: 2019 Audi E-Tron

To our left, a herd of impalas is fanning out into the setting sun. To the right, a solitary springbok stands frozen by a mix of curiosity and fright. In between, sand, salt, and stones stretch all the way to a horizon separated from the dark blue sky by a panoramic cloud of dust. The flat tableland at the bottom of Namibia’s Kalahari desert is ten times the size of a football field for giants—all that´s missing are the goals, the corner flags, and the faintest trace of grass.

For one day only, this flat, open expanse has been converted to a kind of freestyle rallycross stage for six 2019 Audi E-Trons coated in psychedelic swirls not unlike the rock paintings of ancient residents. Water is a precious commodity in this scorching hot basin, but thanks to a few rows of makeshift solar panels, freshly harvested electricity is not. It´s an eerie scene, spectacular yet unreal, a handful of Audis drifting almost noiselessly through no-man´s land, never changing gear or hitting a redline. Vorsprung durch CO2-neutral powerslide, so to speak.

When the dust finally settles, one can decipher cones, an unusually wide racing line, and a white tent next to what must be the start-finish line. “The E-Tron is not a one-hit wonder,” says Markus Siewert, one of several project engineers. “We can do repeat action better than anybody else. The E-Tron, for instance, accelerates ten times from nought to sixty without dropping a single tenth over the entire cycle. On the autobahn, you are invited to nail the pedal to the metal for twenty long minutes—and I promise you the top speed will not budge one bit over time. Eventually, power is progressively scaled back to prevent overheating. A similar measure is taken when the car struggles to reach the nearest charge point. There´s R for reverse, D for drive, N for neutral and P for park. It’s a single-speed box, so that one and only ratio takes you all the way to 124 mph, where the limiter steps in. On paved surfaces, the electric Q can use its boost mode to accelerate to 60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. Take away that power boost and the stopwatch will read somewhere in the mid-six-second range. The car from Ingolstadt feels far from slow, but in this comparison the Audi loses a fair few ticks to the least powerful Tesla Model X, which also offers a 6-mph higher top speed

Late next year, insiders are expecting a performance version of the E-Tron rated at approximately 503 hp, but right now the maximum power output is 402 hp. Even this number is only available for ten seconds in boost mode. The next step down is called peak mode. It musters 355 hp and 414 lb-ft for up to 60 seconds. Under normal driving conditions, the E-Tron will use the rear motor primarily, which is good for 188 hp and 231 lb-ft of torque. If the driver requests more grunt, the second motor rated at 168 hp/182 lb-ft will jump in to drive the front wheels. Our test car was fitted with 21-inch energy saving tires, which destroyed the ride but offered plenty of cornering grip. Although the steering always tells the full story, it feels somewhat artificial throughout its range.

The battery can be fast-charged with up to 150 kW at a network of service stations currently under construction. Audi has partnered with Electrify America to build 500 fast-charge stations in 40 states by 2019. While fast charging takes about 20 minutes, plug-in charging at home is an eight-hour affair. To speed up the process, Audi is offering a more powerful wall box and a second onboard charger. The killer app of the fast-charger? An 80-percent charge in just 30 minutes.

Inside, the E-Tron does not differ dramatically from the new Q8, A8, A7, and A6. The only obvious exceptions are the optional camera-based rear-view devices, which are lighter, narrower, and more aerodynamically slippery than conventional mirrors. On the credit side, the slim camera-equipped view finders will switch to a smaller image on the autobahn to emphasize the speed difference between fast and slow moving traffic, the system automatically extends the lateral view as soon as the indicator is set, and it dials in a bird´s eye perspective paired to a curbside zoom when parking. By tapping the intelligence of the cloud, the E-Tron driver is led to empty parking spaces, receives fog, black ice, and accident warnings, and is cautioned should a mobile speed trap pop up.

In typical Audi fashion, there are seven different choices of tune, from eco to dynamic. In addition, you are invited to dial in one of three overriding settings labeled comfortable, balanced, and sporty. The fourth option is individual, which allows you to preset stability control from steadfast to leery, dampers from quite firm to quite comfortable, steering effort from featherweight to heavyweight, and drivetrain from attentive to aggressive. The standard air suspension can be jacked up in two steps by 1.38 inches (35 mm) in allroad and by 1.97 in (50 mm) in off-road mode. Above 62mph, it automatically lowers the ride height by about 1 in (26 mm). The electronic e-quattro AWD system is significantly quicker to act and react than its combustion-powered counterpart. In fact, the energy flow to the four wheels is so rapid that the car responds to a puddle almost before it hits it. Waftability is a key target for every electric car, and this also applies to the all-electric Audi, which comes prepared for level 3 autonomous driving as soon as it becomes legal. The vibration-free motors, the absence of virtual or actual gear changes, the punchy power delivery, and the hush-quiet noise level make this a perfectly relaxed and sufficiently brisk grand. The laid back dynamics are supported by a flat ride, nicely suppressed body movements, and enough instant oomph to pull away from trouble. Dislikes? Nose dive under hard deceleration, go-for-it take-off squat, a steering that is too light in comfort mode and too heavy in dynamic, and a set of brakes that deserves its own paragraph, together with the Audi energy regeneration strategy.

Intelligent recuperation helps to extend the driving range by up to 30 percent, says Audi. There are two different methods working hand in hand: lift-off regeneration and brake regeneration. In both cases, the e-motors act as generators and convert kinetic energy back into electric energy. Up to 0.3g of deceleration, you can either coast or make use of the regen, which is strong enough to create that coveted “one pedal” driving experience.
