Led Solar Street Light ?-Step by Step
By sunset, most of us are putting away our garden tools. You can’t really weed or harvest or hoe in the dark, unless you have outdoor lighting. But good outdoor lighting can be pricey, and you often need a licensed electrician to install a system in your landscape. Solar lights can be a great alternative. They’re available in a variety of prices and styles, and most are easy to stake into the ground along a driveway or path, hang from tree branches, or attach to existing structures, like deck posts. These kind of lights work by absorbing sunlight in photovoltaic cells. The cells then charge batteries that power up LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, when it gets dark. Because they used conventional bulbs, the first solar lights were somewhat dim. But today, most feature super-bright LEDs that don't produce as much heat as traditional bulbs. Today's units also have more efficient batteries, so they work even in the winter, when the days are short. And because solar lights don’t require as much electricity as traditional types, they’re cheaper to operate. When you're ready to brighten your landscape, use our tips to help you find the right lights for your needs: 1.First, decide how much light you want. If you need only a soft glow, accent lights will do the trick. You’ll find models with amber, soft white, or super-bright LEDS; some even appear to flicker like candles. Accent lights provide the least amount of light in the solar lighting category, but are often the least expensive, too. Look for solar-powered planters, cubes, orbs, lanterns, and fiber optic strands; strings of solar-powered lights; floating solar pool lights; and even decorative lights that look like fireflies, morning glories, and more. Some change colors. 2.If you need to mark a path, driveway, or other area, look for solar path lights. They’re typically sold in sets of 4, 6 or more units. Some can be staked into the ground, while others use mounting brackets or hooks, so you can hang them. In terms of price and illumination, they’re in the middle of the solar powered range. 3.Want to highlight a special feature, like a tree or sculpture in your garden? Try a solar spotlight, sometimes called a solar task light. Most spots are only about as bright as a 40-watt incandescent bulb, so you may need more than one. Some are available with motion sensors that save power when it's not needed, so you can also use them near doors and other entranceways. Options to look for when buying solar-powered lights: Do the lights have plastic or glass panels, shades, or other parts? Many solar lights come with plastic, but high-grade glass panels won’t crack or turn cloudy. If you live in a region with a lot of cloudy days, or you have a shady yard, you can still use solar lights, although they perform best when they get 8 or more hours of sun each day. For better results, consider a remote photovoltaic panel that you can install on your roof or put in a sunny spot. You’ll need to wire it panel to the lights you use around your yard. Another option: look for solar lights with advanced circuitry. This kind of technology is designed to help them store up a charge even when the sky is overcast. Before you buy, read about the solar lights you're considering to see how long the batteries hold a charge. Top-line batteries, or so-called “next generation batteries,” can hold up to 2 ½ times the charge as older types. Look to see if the solar lights have reflectors. Many have plastic reflectors that let some of the stored light escape. Read the packaging to see many LEDs are in each unit. Some solar lights have 4 to 6 LEDs in each head, while others many have 16. The more LEDs, the brighter the glow. Think about how long you want your solar lights to last. Models that have batteries sealed in silicone, or one-piece "all-weather" housing that resists moisture, may be more costly up front, but you won't have to replace them as often. Want to save the electrical charge in your batteries, so you can use your solar lights only when you really need them? Look for models with on and off switches. Some may have timers you can set. How to choose the best outdoor solar lights for your garden? What type of outdoor lights should I buy? Wall-mounted lamps: Great for illuminating a specific spot such as a seating area or flower bed. They tend to run off an interior or exterior mains supply. Best to go for a fixture with an anti-rust coating. Security lights: Designed to deter intruders and help you move around safely in the dark. Most are fitted with a PIR (passive infrared sensor) that's activated when motion is detected and is a great energy-saving feature. Some lights allow you to programme how long the light stays on for and at what distance the sensor detects movement. Spike lamps: An easy way to light up paths, borders and edges. Most commonly solar-powered so you can just push them in the ground without having to deal with any wiring. If you're looking for a brighter effect, consider a mains-powered spike light. Lanterns: An atmospheric and portable option that adds a warm glow to wherever you choose to plonk it. Typically battery or solar-powered. String lights: Versatile and very easy to install. Can be draped over balcony railings and fences, wrapped around columns and trees and used to define borders and edges. Use hooks or staples to attach to surfaces. They can run from a mains supply, but opt for a battery or solar-powered set if you want to avoid wiring. What kind of power supply do I need? If you don't have an external electrical socket you can run outdoor lighting from an internal power source. You'll need to make sure that the circuit is protected by an RCD (a residual current device, designed to break currents when necessary to prevent electric shocks) and that it can cope with the additional load you're putting on it. If you're fitting a single security light, installation can be fairly straightforward, but if you're adding a number of lights, it's advisable to run a new supply from a fuse board. If in any doubt, seek guidance from a qualified electrician. Or, if you'd rather not go down the electric route, consider a battery or solar-powered option instead. What to consider when choosing solar garden lights for your exterior lighting needs. Step 1. Decide if you need decorative accent, path or task solar lights. Step 2. Find out whether the battery needs full sunlight to charge. Some lights charge with partial sun and work great under trees or in areas with low sunlight. This type of solar light can also be charged on a cloudy day. Step 3. Consider the operating time. Usually solar lights perform year round and even charge the battery to provide operation during long winter nights. Some solar lights shine for several days before needing to recharge. Step 4. Check the type of light bulb the solar light uses. LED lights offer the brightest and most efficient light when it comes to efficiency, size, price and energy usage. Some accent solar lights use amber LED lights to create a softer glow. Step 5. Compare extra items like timers or an on-off switch to the cost. Colored lenses change the look of the solar lights without compromising the brightness. Some solar lights mount to your house, hang from trees or can be mounted to your patio rail. Remote control wall dimmer for led lights
#Remote control wall dimmer for led lights full#
There are some rooms in your home that, no matter what time of day, you always end up turning on the lights: Pantries, closets, hallways, etc. With a few taps of the set button or a moment's time with your smartphone, you can configure sensors throughout your home to automatically turn on (or off) the lights based on a variety of different actions. Your Insteon Wall Switch can do so much more when given access to the family of Insteon sensors. With an Insteon Keypad, you can quickly control all of them for instant an instant "good night". With at least one light switch in every bedroom, multiple in every bathroom, a myriad in the living room, den, kitchen and dining rooms, you might have 40 or more switches to manage in your home. Give one to your kids and let them investigate the monsters under their bed. Mount one on the wall by your nightstand. With an Insteon Wall Switch and a Mini Remote, you can put a wall switch anywhere you want. The light switches are on the wrong end of the room, behind doors - just in the wrong places. Sometimes you have to wonder what the electrician was thinking when he wired your home. There's no limit to Insteon's multiway switching. Want to add another? Make it a 4-way - or 5-way. Just a few taps of the set button and you've made a 3-way switch. With Insteon, every wall switch can control every other wall switch, no extra wires needed. Great if you're building anew, but almost impossible to retrofit. With traditional wall switches, control from multiple locations, like in a long hallway, requires special dedicated wiring. Insteon devices throughout your home knit together a web of control, enabling some of the most customizable and configurable control options that put even the most expensive home automation technologies to shame. Remote control from another Insteon device. And because you can schedule scenes, you can give your home that "lived in" look even when you're away. Program one switch to turn off all of the downstairs lights. With the Insteon Hub, scenes really take on a new level. With On Level, you also get to specify how bright your lights are when you tap the paddle, from 1% to 100%. With a custom Ramp Rate, you get to set how quickly (or slowly) your lights brighten and dim - anywhere from instantly to 8 minutes.

You can schedule individual wall switches or full groups of switches for particular hours and days of the week. Wake up to a gentle pseudo-sunrise at 7AM. Grab your smartphone and brighten and dim your switch to your heart's content.Īutomatically turn your porch lights on at dusk. Sometimes the couch is just too comfy and that wall switch is just too far away. Use your smartphone or tablet to control and configure your switch for the ultimate in remote control. And with the Insteon Hub., your smartphone is your Wall Switch's best friend, too. You can even custom-etch text onto the switch paddles for ease-of-use in multi-gang switch boxes. Swap out the LED light pipe for personalized colors. Change the paddle color to suit your décor needs. Brighten all of the lights in an entire room with a tap-and-hold or create infinite virtual multi-way switches. One of the most powerful features of Insteon switches, Scenes let you control multiple devices simultaneously with a single tap. Compare the top motion sensor lights
Best motion detector lights reviews
1. LeonLite LED Security Lights: Best overall
This LeonLite motion detector light strikes a balance between power and energy efficiency.
When you think of energy efficiency, solar lights probably jump to mind. This hardwired motion light gives them a run for their money. The LeonLite motion-activated security light is eligible for state and national energy rebate programs, and it can save you up to 86.7% on your outdoor lighting electricity bill. Think of them as outdoor lights that are good for the outdoors and your wallet.
Pros
Comes in multiple finishes
Durable, weatherproof housing
Delivers bright, adjustable security lighting
Cons
Tricky installation
Goes on and off sporadically
On top of shaving a little off your power bill, this is the brightest LED motion light in our lineup. And the motion sensors detect action from up to 70 feet away. Its powerful dual flood lights produce up to 1,800 lumens, about the same as a car’s headlights. So whether you’re trying to light up your dark backyard or show intruders you are home, this light is hard to ignore.
2. Maxsa Motion-Activated Security Outdoor Spotlight: Most versatile
The solar powered Maxsa Security Spotlight is ideal for sheds, decks, garages, and walkways. We like that its two floodlights are positionable to light more than one area. It can detect motion up to 40 feet away, which is pretty respectable, but not as sensitive as our top pick from LeonLite.
It comes with four bright 0.3 watt LED lights that give off 220 lumens. This is bright enough to light your way temporarily when you get home but not strong enough for nighttime projects in the yard.
[external_link offset=1]
Pros
Detects motion up to 40 feet
Installs quickly
Monitors more than one area at once
Cons
Costs more
Weak weatherproofing
It’s easy to install because it use a solar panel for power, so there’s no need to call an electrician to install this security light on your siding, doors, or garage. While the solar panel is a nice way to recharge the batteries, it makes this light more expensive than the competition.
This motion-activated light has the weakest weatherproofing in our review. While the light’s casing can deflect occasional water splashes, it doesn’t hold up well to constant precipitation like rain and snow. We recommend installing the light under an overhanging roof if possible.
3. Mr Beams Wireless Outdoor Spotlight: Budget pick
Whether you’re looking to enhance home security or add extra safety to dark entryways, this light fits just about anywhere. Even though it may be small, the Mr Beams Wireless LED Spotlight provides up to 200 lumens of bright LED light. This motion-activated security spotlight packs a powerful punch that won’t bust your budget.
This durable motion detecting spotlight is so affordable you may want to buy multiple units for all your outdoor lighting needs. You can pick up one Mr Beams Spotlight for around $20 or get a two-pack for about $40.
Pros
Easy installation
Auto shut-off
Daylight sensor
Cons
Touchy sensor
Inconsistent quality
The Mr Beams Spotlight claims to be waterproof, but customers have found corrosion inside the sensors due to moisture, so it’s something to consider if you live in a moist climate.
4. Baxia Technology Solar Motion Sensor Lights: Best path lights
Baxia’s motion sensor lights are an ideal option for path lights because they come in a four-pack. This allows you to line a path or steps at regular intervals for full lighting coverage. While you can also mount them higher up on a wall, we think these lights are perfect for paths.
While you can’t reposition the lights like on our top two picks, the top-mounted solar panels make for reliable nighttime lighting without fussy wiring. The integrated passive infrared (PIR) sensor spots heat sources like a warm body, so these lights won’t trigger when falling leaves drift past them.
Pros
30-day money-back guarantee
PIR sensor that detects body heat
Affordable price
Cons
No dimming mode
Inconsistent quality
We like that these lights are so affordable, about $7.50 apiece, though you need to buy four at a time since they don’t come in smaller packs. They also have some of the best weatherproof ratings of any light on our list. These lights are water resistant and can withstand both extreme cold and extreme heat. Best of all, they come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
5. Sengled Smartsense: Best motion sensor light bulb
These Sengled Smartsense motion sensor lightbulbs are an excellent option for folks with existing flood light fixtures. Because they screw into a standard light socket, they’re a breeze to install. Since you don’t need to replace a light fixture, these bulbs are an affordable way to get motion detection lighting.
At 1,200 lumens apiece, these are some of the bright motion sensor lights on our list, allowing them to outshine all but our top pick—though it’s easily brighter than the LeonLite if you put both bulbs in the same fixture.
Pros
Screws into existing light socket
Turns off automatically during the day
Affordable
Cons
Requires specific fixture
While these bulbs are affordable, they’re only effective when you put them in the right type of light fixture—since the motion detector is on the tip of the light bulbs. If you don’t have a downward-facing light fixture or an adjustable flood light, they won’t spot motion as people approach.
More brands we’re considering
We’re currently evaluating some motion sensor lighting products from the following brands:
Amazon-owned Ring is most famous for its video doorbells, but it also makes smart lighting products, including several types of Ring motion detector lights. While most of these products don’t necessarily require a smartphone app to work as motion sensor lights, the app is the best feature overall.
[external_link offset=2]
While we like that you can use the app to set schedules and customize settings, you need to buy a hub (around $50) to unlock app functionality, making Ring Smart Lights more expensive than typical motion sensor lights.
Upgrade to a smart light + video camera
The Ring Spotlight Cam and Ring Floodlight Camera add a smart twist to outdoor motion sensor lights. When motion is detected, the light will pop on, the camera will start recording, and you’ll receive a notification on your phone. By viewing the live camera feed through the Ring app, you can safely see what’s going on outside your home.
Check out our Ring Spotlight Camera review for the full scoop.
Ring purchased Mr Beams in 2017 and uses the same technology in its own smart lighting products. Unfortunately, Mr Beams lights and Ring lights aren’t compatible with each other.
Philips Hue is a juggernaut of smart lighting and it’s steadily growing a massive selection of attractive outdoor lights. While it sells some of the best outdoor security lights, smart floodlight bulbs, and even a color-changing floodlight, it’s also supremely expensive compared to our top picks.
This is especially true since Hue lights require a hub (about $60 if you don’t buy it in a starter kit) and don’t have built-in motion detectors. Instead, you need to buy the Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor (about $50) for any of the outdoor lights to turn on when there’s motion. Philips Hue is generally not affordable enough for most folks, but is definitely a high-end splurge.
If you want to improve nighttime security in your yard, motion sensor lights are both effective and affordable. Out top pick, the LeonLite, has two bright LED flood lights that you can position for the best lighting for your needs.
The bright lights get power directly from your home, so you don’t need to rely on sunny days and solar panels for it to work. It’s a little harder to install than a battery-powered light, but we think it’s worth the effort.
Motion detector lights are a great addition to any home security strategy, but there are always ways to improve. After you check out our FAQ section, head over to our guide to home security for more ideas on how to protect your home.
We delved into industry research and reviews from real users to evaluate product performance, features, and specs. We also explored the FCC rules for LED lighting and consulted expert reviews to help us determine the best motion sensor lights.

Indoor or outdoor, motion sensor lights provide security, convenience, and energy efficiency. There may be one main reason you’re looking for motion-activated lighting, or you may want to take advantage of all the benefits. Your primary reason will help you figure out the answers to other questions, like what type of bulb to get.
For security, you might want an outdoor motion sensor lights that’s surprise an intruders and scare them off. On the other hand, a motion light that makes sure you don’t get tripped up on your way into the house can be less powerful.
Many outdoor motion sensor lights use LED to help save on electricity and minimize the chance of fire from a traditional, incandescent bulb that gets hot while in use.
The downside is that LED security lights are often dimmer, which can be a deal breaker if you want to illuminate a big area or startle trespassers. Incandescent light bulbs use more energy and need to be replaced more often, but they tend to be much brighter.
Because you’re looking for motion sensor lighting, you should have less worry about incandescent lights heating up from being left on too long.
The amount of coverage provided by a motion light is determined by the motion sensor range and the brightness of the light bulbs. If you’re looking to light up a small area like the front porch, you may only need a motion sensor with a range of a few feet.
But if you want to illuminate a larger area like an entire backyard, you might want LED security lights with a range of 70 feet or more. You can also power up the reach of your motion light with bright bulbs that use more lumens. Small areas can get by with as little as 42 lumens, while floodlights can produce up to 3,400.
You can get motion sensor light fixtures that are hardwired, battery powered, or solar powered. The benefit of lights that use battery power or a solar panel is that you don’t have to install them near an electrical outlet. But solar panels need to be affixed where they’ll get enough sunlight for a full charge.
The drawbacks with battery and solar power are that your security can be compromised due to a dead battery or a cloudy day. You also sacrifice brightness with those power sources, as the brightest lights tend to use hardwiring.
If you do go with hardwired motion lights, be sure to plan ahead in case you need to run wires through walls or secure extension cords.
In order to deflect raindrops and protect the electrical components inside, a motion sensor light should have an ingress protection rating of IP44 or higher. If the rating is lower, the light needs an enclosure for outdoor operation.
What is an ingress protection rating?
Ingress protection ratings define how well a device prevents solids and liquids from making their way inside a product’s casing where they can damage sensitive components. Every IP rating uses two digits to express this with the first digit signifying solids (fingers, dust) and the second meaning liquids (water). Higher numbers mean greater resistance.1
Solids ratings range from 0–6.
Liquids ratings range from 0–8.
An X in either field means it’s untested in that category.
For example, an IP68 rating totally protects against dust and full immersion in water.
You should be able to add motion sensor lights to an existing home security system. Contact your security provider to find out if motion sensor lights are available. If the company you use doesn’t offer motion lights, find out if the system is compatible with any third-party motion sensor lights.
The benefit of having motion lights integrated into your security system is the convenience of mobile alerts when the lights are activated. Plus, if you have security cameras, the lights can help you get better footage in low-light situations.
Motion lights deter nighttime burglars for these reasons:
Burglars won’t have the cover of darkness to approach the house.
Sometimes it’s hard to tell if someone turned on the light manually.
If anyone inside the home (or even a neighbor) also saw the light come on, there’s a good chance they’ll look for suspicious activity.
The motion light might set off a secondary, furry alarm that wakes up the family with barking.
Still, if a burglar knows the house is empty and that neighbors don’t have a good view, they might take the risk anyway, or they might come back during the day when the lights don’t affect your security. This is why it’s important to use other security measures like locks, security systems, and security cameras to fortify your home against intruders.

3. Best Smart: Google Nest Protect
WHAT TO EXPECT?
Smart
10-years CO sensor
Thoughtful, not annoying
This is what I was waiting for! When we have everything smart ranging from smartphones to TVs to smartwatches, why not make out protection layer smart too. Well, Google picked up the challenge and came up with a brand-new smart design for a smoke detector. The main slogan “it thinks before it speaks" is true! Why? Because this alarm has multiple checking sensors. For example: if you are having a shower in your bathroom and a smoke detector is installed nearby, chances are that the steam may trigger an alarm. But that's not the case with Google's nest protect. It has its unique humidity sensor that performs some calculations and evaluates that you don’t have to trigger an alarm. This smart boy performs multiple batteries and sensor checks (up to 400 times a day). It combines photoelectric and ionization with its Split-spectrum sensor that uses two wavelengths of light to ensure that both smoldering and fast flaming fires stay miles away from your house. What I like the best about it is that it does what it isn’t made for. It enlightens your pathway at nighttime with its motion sensors so that you can walk through the alley without stumbling.
KEY FEATURES:
Split-Spectrum Sensor
Tests Itself Automatically
10-Years Battery
Smart Voice
Hush App
No Chirps
Multiple Auto Checkups
Phone Alerts
Combined Technology of Photoelectric and Ionization SD’s
Pathlight
CONS:
Expensive
4. Best Budget: First Alert SA303CN3
DISTINCTIVE FEATURES
Are you willing to spend less on your safety? Well, I would recommend that you shouldn’t but with First Alert SA303CN3, you won’t have too! These smoke sensors are way more affordable than others. They use ionization smoke detecting technology and are highly efficient for detecting fast flaming fires. The alarm is decently loud and isn’t triggered by shower or cooking steams. These are operational even when you have a power shortage at your house as they are battery-powered. The smoke detecting units are equipped with easy access battery drawers that allow users to replace the batteries without extracting the units from the ceiling. You also get a single test button that ensures that your smoke detectors are working efficiently. The best part about it is that you get all premium features at a highly affordable price!
KEY FEATURES:
Battery operated
Tamper-resistant
Easy to install
Ionization sensor
85-decibel alarm sound
Mute feature
Single test button
Easy access battery drawer
10-years limited warranty
Meets UL standards
Weight 7.2 ounces
CONS:
Batteries don’t last longer
5.Best Co Detector: Kidde 2070-VDSCR
DISTINCTIVE FEATURES
Multi-criteria optical sensor
Electrochemical CO sensor
Voice notifications
If you are searching for something similar to Google Nest Protect, but with a lower price, then this is your best option. Kidde 2070-VDSCR with a multi-criteria optical sensor that works in every kind of fires. The optical sensor detects smoldering fires as well as fast flaming fires. Similarly, Kidde 2070-VDSCR is highly efficient for detecting Carbon Monoxide gas. The electrochemical sensor incorporated in Kidde 2070-VDSCR ensures that you or your family don’t inhale Carbon Monoxide. You can also change the battery easily, as it has a front battery door that allows you to replace the batteries without unmounting the device from the ceiling. Three different colors of LED have different purposes. Red is for fire alert, yellow is for low battery, while green is for Carbon Monoxide. The best part about these smoke detectors is that it comes with a voice notification technology which makes it shortly similar to Google Nest Protect although not as smart as it. Unlike other alarms, the Kidde 2070-VDSCR speaks different phrases such as Fire! Warning Carbon Monoxide! And Low Battery!
KEY FEATURES:
Multi-criteria optical sensor
Electrochemical CO sensor
Voice notifications
Front-loading battery door
Three Color LEDs
Temperature Range: 40˚F (4.4˚C) to 100˚F (37.8˚C)
Weight 16 ounces
10-Years Limited Warranty
Advanced Smoke Sensor
CONS:
Low Voice Alarm Sound
Criteria Used For Evaluation
Exclusivity
Our list of the best smoke detectors is unique and engaging, (though not the ultimate list) because it is based on the exclusivity of products. This type of categorization helps readers to choose according to their preferences. The exclusivity of smoke detectors is also important for tackling different types of fires. For example, photoelectric fires will be inefficient against fast flaming fires. So, you need to make sure that you have the correct equipment installed at your home. A combination of the two types of smoke detectors is an expert’s choice, as it ensures that you stay protected against every type of fire.
Durability
Smoke detectors should be extremely durable and self-checking. If a smoke detector is not operational and you aren't aware of it, it could result in a fire.
Effectiveness
None of the aforementioned products lack in their detecting effectiveness. Each product is equipped with the best alerting properties in its category. The importance of the efficiency of smoke detectors is visible to all, as these are the mandatory protective devices from fatal fires.
Key Features
Key features’ is a criterion of evaluation similar to exclusivity, but the main idea behind listing the key features is to ease the selection process for the reader. A reader in a hurry will find reading the list of key features substantial and convenient.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PHOTOELECTRIC AND AN IONIZATION SMOKE DETECTOR?A: Photoelectric Smoke Detector In case you have a smoldering fire in your kitchen and you don't notice it, it will eventually grow into a big fire and burn your house. These fires are caused by negligible items such as when items such as burning cigarettes or matchsticks are left unattended. To prevent that from happening make sure to install photoelectric smoke detectors in your house, warehouse, or industry, etc. These types of smoke detectors detect the smoke when the smoke enters the detector chamber and scatters the light.
Ionization Smoke Detector Resulting from the ignition of flammable liquids, electricity, paper, and wood, fast-flaming fires ignite faster than smoldering fires and produce smaller amounts of smoke. In case your electrical outlet is overloaded and you have a fast flaming fire, you must install ionization smoke detectors. These types of smoke detectors use the ionization process and when smoke neutralizes the process, an alarm is triggered .Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD SMOKE ALARMS BE CHECKED TO ENSURE THEY ARE IN WORKING CONDITION?A: Smoke detectors should be tested at least once a week. However, the latest smoke detectors have an auto-check feature that alerts if it is not operational. Q: WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ALARM SOUNDS?
A:Whenever an alarm is triggered and you sense a fire, you should grab a light at first. Use the light to locate your family members and gather them. Don’t waste your time gathering your stuff. Make sure to grab cloths and towels as well to put on your face and prevent smoke inhalation. Alerting your kids is as important as alerting adults. You should train once or twice, so, in case a fire occurs, everyone is mentally and physically prepared. Make sure to have a fire extinguisher at your home as well. If you have a multi-level house, make sure to equip each floor with one. learn more steam cleaner reviews

Stacey’s IoT Xmas gifts
*I’m not gonna buy ‘em. I’m safe in Italy.
The 2017 Internet of Things Holiday Gift Guide
By Stacey Higginbotham and Kevin Tofel
This Friday kicks off the holiday giving season, so my IoT Podcast co-host Kevin Tofel and I have pooled our experiences over the last year to create a list of tried and true devices that make a good gift. Some are for kids, some are for pets, and some are for the guy or gal who already has a connected home. I hope you can find something worth gifting or buying for yourself.
— There are so many connected options for gift giving. Let us show you.
Smart Home Picks
Wyze Camera
($19.99): For $20 you might expect this camera to be a piece of junk, but in our two weeks of testing we found it works really well. The camera offers two-way audio, night vision, 1080p resolution, 14-day cloud storage and motion detection. It’s wired and rated for the indoors, but if you want a simple security camera this one is an excellent place to start. With a microSD card (not included) you can even see a time lapse shot of the day, a feature that the more expensive Nest Cam also offers. The camera’s makers licensed the hardware from a Chinese company and have placed their bet on making good software while offering the cheapest prices they can. The team is based in Seattle and hail from Amazon. It doesn’t work with any other smart home platforms today, but Jessie Zhou, director of marketing at Wyze, says the company plans to add support for popular options over time. And for $20, the lack of integrations is not a huge deal killer.
Arlo Pro outdoor 2 cameras and hub
($349.99): For the security conscious homeowner and renters alike, these cameras make for a nice outdoor or indoor option. They are rechargeable, offer 720p video resolution, two-way audio, motion detection and night vision. We leave ours on the roof deck when we have parties and want to keep an eye on children from the Amazon Echo Show or from our phones and then toss them outside or on window ledges when we leave town for vacation. These are not always recording, so they aren’t foolproof. They have to detect motion in order to turn on, and one or two people have told me the cameras missed an event. If you want failsafe security, wired cameras are probably the way to go. That being said, these are good enough, durable, convenient and a decent price.
Google Home
($79 during the holidays): In the smart speaker category, our choice is the Google Home, which has managed to surpass the Amazon Echo at offering responses to everyday inquiries and has mostly met the challenge in the smart home. If you haven’t decided yet on a smart speaker option for the home, for $79 during the holiday season, you can pick up a decent-sounding device that can
control hundreds
of smart home devices and process almost any query you can think of. Plus, it can make phone calls, which turns the Google Home into a de facto land line for people as long as there is internet access and power. My only quibble with this device is that the slanted design of the top means that you can’t always see if the device “heard” your initial voice command.
Sonos One
($174 from 11/23 to 11/27): As an alternative to Google Home, we also recommend the new Sonos One for specific people. For example, this new hands-free speaker
supports Alexa voice controls for your smart home
, as well as for music playback on Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and more. Even better: You’ll have a choice of digital assistants in 2018 when Sonos adds support for Google Assistant. Sound quality is excellent on the Sonos One and you can combine multiple units for multi-room audio. Plus, the Sonos companion app includes a smart configuration option to optimize audio playback for your specific room set up.
Wink Hub 2 ($99): You can buy the Samsung SmartThings Hub for less, but we recommend the Wink Hub 2 for the extra money. This second-gen hub improves over its predecessor with a faster processor, more memory, and dual-band WiFi support. You don’t need to hardwire it to a router either, making it easy to place in the center of your smart home for maximum range of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Zigbee and Z-Wave devices. It’s easy to use the Wink app to add new devices, create schedules or automate devices as well. Local processing means that even if your internet service goes down, Wink can still control your home; a feature that Samsung only just added to its hub. With broad device support, simple setup and the ability to work with either Alexa or Google Assistant, the Wink Hub 2 is a great choice to be the brains of your smartphone.
Ecobee 4 ($199 on sale): Nest may be the most recognizable smart thermostat brand but we think the Ecobee 4 is better. It’s just as easy to install and includes a Power Extender Kit for older HVAC systems. It also has two key benefits: Remote sensors — one included, additional sensors cost $79 per pair — to monitor temperature in additional rooms and a built in microphone/speaker combo that works with Amazon Alexa. The Ecobee 4 is compatible with Apple HomeKit so you’re covered regardless of your hub or smartphone platform.
Google Wi-Fi ($289 for a three pack / $249 on Black Friday at Best Buy): Unless you need super advanced router features, the Google Wi-Fi mesh network units are a great addition to any home. They’re simple to set up and less expensive than most other competing products. The three pack covers 4,500 square feet and creates a single network for your devices, making them a better choice than older network extenders. Although you use Wi-Fi to connect the units, each has an Ethernet port for wiring a device as well. Some standout features include scheduling a Wi-Fi pause for family time, guest network support and the ability to prioritize your wireless signal to a specific device for a certain length of time.
Nvidia Shield TV ($149 on Black Friday) and Samsung SmartThings Link ($39.99): This recommendation might seem like it doesn’t belong on an IoT gift guide but bear with us while we explain. The Nvidia Shield TV is primarily a powerful Android TV streaming box and Chromecast unit that supports 4K HDR playback with ease. You can also play Android games on your big screen with the optional (but recommended) game controller included in the $169 Black Friday bundle. Nvidia also offers 1080p console games through a monthly $8 subscription fee: These titles are played on Nvidia’s cloud servers and streamed to you without any noticeable lag, provided you have a fast enough broadband connection. Here’s where the IoT part comes in on this double-duty device. The Shield TV supports Google Assistant voice commands through a microphone found in both the remote and the game controller. And Nvidia also plans to sell small plug-in microphones you can put throughout your home to use Google Assistant in any room. Lastly, you can add the new Samsung SmartThings Link USB stick for $40 which adds Zigbee and Z-Wave support, turning the Nvidia Shield TV into a fully functional SmartThings hub. For the kids Kano motion sensor kit ($29.99): This gizmo is made by the same company that makes the Kano build-it-yourself computer for kids. The sensor plugs into the USB port on a computer and lets the user wave their hand in front of it to make music, control games and more. It’s designed for the younger set, with kids as young as five likely to understand what the device does and start interacting with it. My 11-year-old thought it was a little young for her and was not excited to see the coding challenges that Kano has set up to help youngsters learn how to program the games that use the sensor. “Oh no, coding again!” However, with a less jaded audience the games are fun, and the product is simple and intuitive to use. I’ll also add that the Kano community is wholesome and full of good child-safe computing activities.
Littlebits R2D2 Droid Inventor Kit ($99.95): I have not tested this device, but we’re huge fans of Littlebits in this house so I’m excited about this package. Basically, the company has combined several of its bits into a Star Wars-themed Droid to excite kids. It solves one of the challenges my daughter and I had with the original Littlebits package, which was we had all these servo motors, lights and computers, but no real plan on what to do with them. We overcame that, but the cool part of this toy is that once the magic of the Droid wears off, the nits can be used to build whatever your kid desires. Or not. Either way, they still have a fun toy to play with. I’d recommend this for older kids, roughly in the tween demographic. Stocking stuffers
TrackR Pixel ($49.99 for 5): Bluetooth tracking devices are ideal for purses, wallets, backpacks, keys and any other personal item you don’t want to lose. The TrackR Pixel is roughly the size of a quarter so it’s easy to attach to just about anything without calling attention to itself. Once paired with the TrackR app on your smartphone, you can use Bluetooth or even enable an LED or a sound on the TrackR Pixel to find that lost item. It works in reverse too: By pressing a button on the TrackR Pixel, your phone will sound a tone. No more searching around the house for your smartphone! If you leave something behind while on the go, TrackR crowdsources data so if another TrackR app user passes by your lost item, you’ll see where it is in the app.
Flosstime ($39.99): This might be an insulting gift for an adult but it makes a good gift for a teen or child. Basically, this is a connected dental floss dispenser that suctions to your mirror and has an LED smiley face or frowny face on it. When you grab the floss, it will dispense the right amount automatically and then the frown turns upside down to cheer you on for flossing. As someone who doesn’t floss like she should I look at this as something that would compel me to actually floss in ways that my thrice-annual dental check ups do not. A warning though, this does require special refills that cost $6 a pop. Fibaro Z-wave Button ($49.99) This is not a gift for the smart home novice. This is a stocking stuffer for the person who already owns a SmartThings hub or Fibaro’s own Home Center line of hubs. The button is a beautiful device that can be programmed to respond to 6 different types of touches to set a pre-programmed scene or action in motion. It comes in 8 colors (I have orange) and it’s basically like a magic wand (button) that your loved one can use to impress people with their existing smart home setup and scenes.

This industrial-grade motion lighting system offers a 60-foot detection area, and the motion detector senses 180 degrees side-to-side and 360 degrees up and down. One of our favorite features is how durable this motion-activated light is. It has sturdy construction and is equipped with extreme temperature compensation. That means the RAB Super Stealth automatically adjusts its sensitivity for extreme hot or cold temperatures—so you get consistent motion detection in every season. However, its hardwire installation makes it tougher to set up. Whether you’re looking to enhance home security or add extra safety to dark entryways, this light fits just about anywhere. Even though it may be small, the Mr Beams Wireless LED Spotlight provides up to 140 lumens of bright LED light. This durable motion detecting spotlight is so affordable you may want to buy multiple units for all your outdoor lighting needs. You can pick up one Mr Beams Spotlight for less than $20 or get a four-pack for around $60. The Mr Beams Spotlight claims to be waterproof, but customers have found corrosion inside the sensors due to moisture, so it’s something to consider if you live in a moist climate. Pros Easy installation Auto shut-off UV light sensor Cons Touchy sensor Inconsistent quality Litom Outdoor Motion Sensor Solar Lights Solar-Powered Pick View on Amazon Litom claims to serve over one million families across the country. These flood lights can work from sundown to sunup when fully charged, which is exceptional for solar lights. As testament to Litom’s long illumination times, we saw several reviews from customers who have relied on these solar lights during the long-standing power outages in Puerto Rico. Best of all, you can pick up a four-pack for less than $60. If a light arrives with a defect or stops working, customer service is responsive, fast, and ready to provide assistance or a replacement if needed. This stylish light comes in black or matte white finish, so it will complement your home’s aesthetics instead of detracting from them. Pros Good-looking design Long-range motion detection LED or incandescent bulbs Cons Requires hardwired installation Too small to light large areas Things to Consider in a Motion Sensor Light Why Do I Want Motion Sensor Lights? Motion sensor lights provide security, convenience, and energy efficiency. There may be one main reason you’re looking for motion-activated lighting, or you may want to take advantage of all the benefits. Your primary reason will help you figure out the answers to other questions, like what type of bulb to get. For security, you might want a motion floodlight that’s meant to surprise an intruder and scare them off. On the other hand, a motion light that makes sure you don’t get tripped up on your way into the house can be less powerful. What Type of Lightbulb Should I Get? Many outdoor lights use LED to help save on electricity and minimize the chance of fire from a traditional, incandescent bulb that gets hot while in use. The downside is that LED lights are often dimmer, which can be a deal breaker if you want to illuminate a big area or startle trespassers. Incandescent light bulbs use more energy and need to be replaced more often, but they tend to be much brighter. Because you’re looking for motion sensor lighting, you should have less worry about incandescent lights heating up from being left on too long. How Much Area Do I Want to Illuminate? The amount of coverage provided by a motion light is determined by the motion sensor range and the brightness of the light bulbs. If you’re looking to light up a small area like the front porch, you may only need a motion sensor with a range of a few feet. But if you want to illuminate a larger area like an entire backyard, you might want a floodlight with a range of 70 feet or more. You can also power up the reach of your motion light with bright bulbs that use more lumens. Small areas can get by with as little as 42 lumens, while floodlights can use up to 3,400. What Type of Power Source Is Best? Can I Add Motion Sensor Lights to My Security System? You should be able to add motion sensor lights to an existing home security system. Contact your security provider to find out if motion sensor lights are available. If the company you use doesn’t offer motion lights, find out if the system is compatible with any third-party motion sensor lights. The benefit of having motion lights integrated into your security system is the convenience of mobile alerts when the lights are activated. Plus, if you have security cameras, the lights can help you get better footage in low-light situations. Check Out More Motion Sensor Options There are many situations where a motion-sensing light can come in handy, whether it’s as a nightlight or a convenient way to see what’s in the back of the closet. These gadgets let you decide where and how you want motion-activated light—both outdoors and inside your home. What Needs to Happen to Get Boeing’s 737 Max Flying Again?
Boeing’s 737 Max could be flying again before too long.
The plane has been grounded since last March, after two crashes in five months killed 346 people. The crisis has cost Boeing billions of dollars and led to the ouster of its chief executive, who repeatedly offered overly optimistic assessments of when the Max would be back in the air.
Now there are signs that the Max may return to service relatively soon. On Thursday, Stephen Dickson, the administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, said a crucial test flight could occur in the coming weeks, setting in motion the complex process of ungrounding the plane.
He also revealed that there was yet another problem with the Max: an indicator light that erroneously activated because of an issue with the flight control computer. Boeing is working to resolve the issue, which the company said it did not believe would cause further delays.
Given the approaching test flight, and barring significant new problems, airlines like Southwest, American and United may be able to stick to their plans to use the Max this summer. Here’s what has to happen first.
Outstanding issues on the Max must be addressed.
The indicator light is just one of several issues that Boeing is still trying to resolve. Another major sticking point is whether Boeing needs to separate wire bundles that could, in rare circumstances, cause a short circuit and possibly lead to a catastrophic failure.
Boeing is evaluating the issue and publicly says it will turn its analysis over to the F.A.A. and allow the regulator to make a decision. Privately, the company is making the case that the bundles do not need to be separated, according to two people familiar with the matter. Some F.A.A. officials and European regulators, however, made it clear to Boeing that it must have a persuasive argument for not separating the wires.
“Regarding wire bundles, we continue to perform the appropriate analysis, including lab testing, fleet data assessment and third-party reviews,” Boeing said in a statement on Thursday. “It would be premature to speculate as to whether this analysis will lead to any design changes.”
Boeing is also still working with Collins Aerospace, one of its major subcontractors, to fix lingering issues with updates to the computers that control MCAS, the software that contributed to both crashes. Changes to the software have introduced new complications, such as the issue with the indicator light. Another irregularity, related to the software that monitors the plane as it powers up, is also being worked through.
When Boeing is convinced that all these issues are resolved, it will hand the updated software over to the F.A.A., which will issue what is known as a type inspection authorization memo. Once that is issued, the F.A.A. can conduct its certification flights.
The F.A.A. will fly the plane.
Pilots from the F.A.A. will take a 737 Max to the sky for a few flights over a couple of days in the Seattle area, where the plane is made. If the current timing holds, that could happen in late February or early March.
The test plane will be outfitted with sensors and other monitoring equipment, and F.A.A. officials will be joined by a top Boeing test pilot.
If all goes well, the F.A.A. will conclude that the Max flew as expected. But if it finds other issues, it could require additional work from Boeing.
After the successful completion of the certification flights, Boeing will compile a final package of certification documents to submit to the F.A.A., which could take another couple of weeks.
Training for pilots must be decided.
After the certification flights, international regulators will convene for several days to determine final training requirements for the Max. Last month, Boeing said it would recommend that pilots train in flight simulators before flying the Max. Regulators are likely to concur, though the specifics have yet to be determined.
The regulators will then offer training to more than a dozen flight crews from airlines around the globe and test their responses to emergencies on the Max in a flight simulator.
After those tests, the F.A.A. will produce a report recommending training, which will be open to public comments for 15 days. After the public comment period, the agency will release its final training requirements.
The grounding would formally end.
Once the certification flights are done, the paperwork is complete and the training is set, the F.A.A. will issue an airworthiness directive instructing airlines how to install new software and fix other issues on the Max so that it can fly again. It will then release a separate document formally ending the grounding.
Boeing will also send a bulletin, containing much of the same information, to the airlines that operate the 737 Max. With those steps complete, pilots could begin training.
The F.A.A. is not the only aviation regulator that needs to clear the Max. Officials in Europe, Canada, Brazil and other countries will have to make their own decisions. And while there is a good chance that some international regulators may give the Max the all-clear at the same time as the F.A.A., some could take longer.
Get the planes ready to fly.
When airlines are finally prepared to fly the Max, they will have to get their planes ready. That process — which involves checking all the plane’s systems, as well as its fluids, engines, tires and more — takes a week to 10 days per plane. Airlines are also likely to give the interiors a deep cleaning, and they will have to install the updated software, which should take only a few hours.
Boeing will go through a similar process for the roughly 400 jets built during the grounding that are now in storage. The backlog of completed jets contributed to Boeing’s decision to temporarily shut the 737 factory last month. It will take well over a year to deliver all the already built planes to customers, and Boeing wanted to stop the backlog from growing.
Moving the first planes out of storage and into the hands of customers will be a major milestone for Boeing, and it will signal that the return of the Max is imminent.
Convince passengers the plane is safe.
Once the Max is approved, airlines face the task of persuading people to get on it. Boeing’s own research shows that as of December, 40 percent of travelers said they were unwilling to board a Max. And while Boeing has briefed airlines on its plans to help convince the flying public that the Max is safe to fly, many airline executives acknowledge that it could be a difficult sell, especially early on.

Sensors and relays: the eyes, ears and hands of a building automation system
NEWS FEATURES FIRE & SECURITY SUBMISSIONS RESOURCES
By Fabrizio Petris, Senior Business Development Manager, Omron Electronic Components Europe bv
Until now, energy efficiency measures have focused on the construction of the building, looking at for example the insulation and windows. The new Energy Performing Buildings Directive, adopted in 2018 and mandatory from 2020, marks a significant shift, increasing the focus on the control of energy use within buildings: smart buildings and building automation. This should be music to the ears of building managers everywhere. Smart buildings offer an excellent RoI, but it is still difficult to get the initial capital required signed off. The new directive will help, giving the planet reduced carbon emissions and owners reduced costs. In addition, smart building systems can be extended to additional functions such as security and improving the comfort of occupants. New technologies are continually emerging to enhance smart building systems and reduce their cost. This article surveys the state of the art in these technologies starting with sensors that provide the data and moving on to control components that enable the system to act on it.
Image recognition
Using image recognition technology originally created for mobile phones, building automation systems can interpret the image collected by a camera. They can see and respond to gauge their mood, their age and their gender. They can also recognise an individual. Using these sensors, security systems and building automation systems could eventually be integrated together using one set of vision modules. The data they collect can be responded to automatically, saved or collated centrally, and passed to an operator only when necessary.
Potentially, an office can recognise an individual when he or she arrives, and set up heating and lighting just the way they like it.
The Omron HVC module (Figure 1) is the first vision module specifically aimed at applications like building automation, available in low volumes and readily integrated by any designer without any need to understand the complex algorithms needed to recognise faces and expressions or the optical design. The module is a fully integrated, plug-in solution. The developer can just look at the outputs and configure the system to make appropriate decisions depending on their status.
Thermal sensors
Where the application calls simply for the detection of people without the need for recognition, thermal sensors are a well-established option – and a great alternative to motion sensors. In a building automation system, such sensors can also be used in many other ways, making a valuable contribution to safety by identifying potential problems before they become major hazards. Many fires, for example, start with localized ‘hot spots’ and a thermal sensor can detect a potential fire before it ignites. This can not only save lives but also costs, allowing preventative maintenance to be undertaken in a timely manner.
To be useful in a building automation environment, such sensors need a wide field of view, to detect the presence and location of people and other issues in a space accurately and reliably. Omron D6T MEMS thermal sensors are based on an IR sensor which measures the surface temperature of objects without touching them using a thermopile element that absorbs radiated energy from the target object. Omron has just released a wide angle version of the D6T (Figure 2) with 32 x 32 elements. The D6T-32L-01A can view across 90.0° by 90.0°, encompassing a wide area such as a whole room from a single point.
Environmental sensors
Human operators of systems monitor their environment the whole time, often in ways that we’re not aware of. We respond to the breeze on our face, movements in our peripheral vision, small changes of pressure in our ears and in the soles of our feet. A smart building needs to do the same, responding to changes in its environment to optimise energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
Multi-purpose environmental sensors make it very easy for the designer to deliver a wide range of measurement functions from just one small sensor. This will save development time by providing numerous options that can be tailored to the user’s needs. Whether it’s a question of simply making sure the office environment is kept at the optimum working temperature or ensuring that say a museum has the correct humidity and lighting to protect the exhibits, these sensors offer easy to interpret data that can then be analysed and used to set parameters and make real-time adjustment.
There are probably seven core parameters that any environmental sensor for building and industrial automation systems should be able to monitor: temperature, humidity, quality of air VOC, light, barometric pressure, noise and acceleration. Sensors like the Omron 2JCIE (Figure 3) provides the capability to monitor all of these, and provides data via popular wireless and wired data interfaces like USB and Bluetooth. Despite its compact size, 2JCIE features its own embedded memory for data logging to keep track of the surroundings.
Air quality
Ventilation and adequate air quality in a building is a major issue, and building regulations in countries including the UK make detailed stipulations about adequate mechanical ventilation rates in spaces including non-habitable rooms, such as toilets, bathrooms/shower rooms, kitchens and utility rooms in domestic dwellings.
Whilst building engineers will ensure that such spaces are designed with fans and other means of ventilation that comply with the regulations, building managers need to maintain those fans and ensure that their performance has not dropped below the required level due to wear or to a buildup of dirt in the airway. Suitable sensors are available to help with this task. Omron’s D6F-PH digital pressure sensors (Figure 4) for air flow and clogged filter detection in heat recovery units do this by detecting the differential pressure upstream and downstream of the fan or filter, detecting the degradation in performance as it becomes clogged with dirt and providing an alert when cleaning or replacement is required. A more compact alternative is the 2SMPB barometric pressure sensor. The Omron D-6FV can improve efficiency by monitoring the exact air rate at which air is extracted by the fans.
Controlling the outputs
If these sensors are the ‘eyes and ears’ of a building automation system, it also needs ‘hands’ to act in response. It needs control over outputs: heaters, lights, fans and other elements. Relays are still a great solution. Open the case of almost all building automation systems and you’ll find electromechanical PCB relays used at the output. With so many alternative switching technologies available, including solid state switches, this may come as a surprise. There are four important reasons behind this.
Relays have one or more relay contact outputs
Contacts can be supplied with a changeover output which is used for interlock or scanning circuits
Relays can individually switch AC or DC voltages
Relays simultaneously meet insulation and glow wire test requirements
Because loads vary enormously and the latest technologies place new demands on relays, manufacturers like Omron have developed platform relay series that address all of the different requirements. For example, its G5Q family offers different specifications with the same PCB connection to meet different switching needs.
In common with other classes of components, relay manufacturers are being challenged to make their components more compact. Designs that are almost 30 mm long used to be perfectly acceptable – not any more. The G5Q, for example, is a high specification industrial relay but is only 20mm long by 15 mm high by 10.3mm deep.
Specific applications have their own challenges. For example, LED lighting, water pumps and capacitive input filters with Power Factor Correction produce high inrush currents. This puts extreme loads on relay contacts. If relay contacts weld together this destroys the relay and thus the device. Type G5Q-1A-EL2 (Figure 5) was developed for capacitive inrush currents in the µs range. Such relays can switch inrush currents of 40 A/100 µs and nominal cut-off currents of 1 A/250 V AC up to 100,000 times.
The same design is available for inductive motor loads (e.g. fans) which have inrush currents in the ms range. The G5Q-1A-EL3 is designed accordingly and can perform approximately 300,000 operations with 250 V AC/30 A 500 ms inrush currents (inductive load) with a 3A cut-off current.
The G5Q-1A-EL can handle such switching tasks and offers a long service life (100,000 operations) for general standard applications (resistive load) with high contact loads (10 A/250 V AC) where relays are often subjected to high temperature rises.
To save power latching, designs are also available, such as Omron’s G5RL-U (Figure 6), G5RL-K and the G5RL-HR that can switch up to 16A and are capable of dealing with high inrush currents of up to 150A.
Conclusion
As awareness of the impact of wasted energy in buildings is increased, the technologies on offer to conserve this energy and control its use has improved dramatically. The sensors and relays described above put building managers in an excellent position to reduce both costs and carbon footprint. With the development of the cloud, they no longer even need to be present in a building to receive a full picture of what is going on. All of the data collected and the actions taken by the system in response can be stored on the cloud, and reviewed by the building manager. He or she can reprogram the system to improve its response in the light of experience, or even intervene directly if needed. Truly, ‘dumb’ buildings are becoming a thing of the past.
