Airgun is not the same as airsoft gun because they work differently and are far more powerful. They are classed as pneumatic guns (thank you, Wikipedia, for defining pneumatic as "the use of gas to perform tasks in science and technology"), and they come in a variety of operational styles.

Air cannons are not a new invention; in fact, they date back to the 1400s. Because of their speed (which was rapid back then), quietness, and low visibility, they were preferred over other sorts of weaponry. Air guns could be fired more often than other types of guns, and they did not produce loud noises or clouds of smoke. They're also quite powerful, and that's what we'll talk about next.

Spring-piston, gas-ram, and pneumatic are the three major ways for powering air weapons. Air cannons with spring pistons are pumped by cocking the barrel or using a level. The amount of strength required to cock is related to the air gun's power. Spring pistons typically fire pellets at the speed of sound. They work using a spring-loaded internal piston that is drawn back and locked into a sear. The piston is released after the trigger is pulled, compressing air in a chamber just behind the pellet, pushing the pellet out through the barrel. Many modern spring piston guns feature a battery to automatically cock the gun, and while many are single-shot and loaded through a breech (like a shotgun), advances have allowed multi-shot spring piston guns to be developed.

The fact that the gas-ram air rifles' spring is gas makes them rather unique. A little quantity of gas is present in a chamber behind the pellet, which becomes substantially more pressured after cocking. Because of their endurance and enhanced accuracy, gas-rams are far more efficient and overall superior than spring pistons, however they are more expensive.

Finally, there's pneumatic, which is broken down into numerous kinds. To begin with, pneumatic pistols project pellets solely using gas; you pump, gas is compressed, you squeeze the trigger, gas pushes the pellet out. This sounds a lot like gas-ram, but it's not the same thing. In a gas-ram system, there is already some gas inside the chamber, which is compressed further, but in a pneumatic system, each pump has fresh gas. Regular pneumatic guns are divided into two categories: multi-stroke and single-stroke. For a suitable shot in a multi-stroke gun, the pump must be pulled over one time, but single-stroke guns just require one pump. The most common and least expensive type of air gun is the multi-stroke pneumatic air gun.

PCP air guns are filled with air using either a high-pressure hand pump or a diving cylinder (like what scuba divers use). You can fire without needing to constantly replenish the gas chamber after filling it with gas. The number of shots you get is entirely dependent on the time you use a PCP gun.

Air guns can't be utilised in an airsoft game because of the speed and ammunition they require. Unlike airsoft guns, there are various calibres available, ranging from 4.5mm to 6.35mm, and ammunition options include lead pellets (the most common) and steel BBs. You definitely don't want to be shot with one of them!

Due to their near-silence and considerable strength, air guns are often a hunter's weapon of choice. Small or large animals can be easily killed using air guns, and the shots do not scare away adjacent targets (unlike firearms). Marksmanship practice, hunting, pest management (yes, that's right), and target shooting are the most common uses for air guns. The use of air guns in marksmanship events has been featured in the Olympics, demonstrating their popularity.
