Over the last decade, I’ve had the privilege of watching the world of immersive technology evolve from niche experimentation into a driving force reshaping industries. What began for me as an academic curiosity has turned into a career focused on redefining how people learn, connect, and experience digital content.
We’re now standing at a pivotal point in this evolution—a convergence of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and what we now call Spatial Computing. This convergence is not just changing how we build technology—it’s changing how we interact with the world around us.
In this post, I’d like to share my personal perspective on where we’ve been, where we’re going, and why the fusion of these technologies holds the key to the next era of human-computer interaction.
🔍 What Is Spatial Computing?
Before diving deeper, let’s clarify the term. Spatial computing refers to the use of digital technology to interact with and manipulate physical space. It encompasses AR, VR, mixed reality (MR), 3D mapping, and even sensor-driven environments where digital content responds to the user's position, gaze, gestures, or context.
Where AR overlays data on the real world and VR immerses you in a simulated one, spatial computing stitches both dimensions together—making digital content context-aware, persistent, and seamlessly integrated into our lives.
🚀 The Shift from Devices to Environments
Historically, our digital experiences were confined to screens—smartphones, desktops, and tablets. Now, we’re moving toward digital environments that live around us. This shift is already happening in:
Workspaces: Mixed reality meetings that combine physical presence with holographic collaboration.
Education: Simulated environments where students interact with 3D models instead of textbooks.
Healthcare: AR-guided surgeries and VR therapies for PTSD and phobias.
In all of these cases, the user is no longer just an operator—they become a participant in a spatially aware system.

One of the most exciting (and most challenging) aspects of this convergence is rethinking design principles. Traditional UI/UX doesn’t apply in 3D space. Instead, we have to consider:
Ergonomics of movement (e.g., where virtual buttons appear in a user’s field of view)
Natural interactions (e.g., gaze-based controls, voice commands, hand tracking)
Accessibility (e.g., designing experiences that accommodate motion sensitivity or visual impairments)
At the heart of all these considerations is a central question: How do we make these immersive experiences feel natural, helpful, and human-first?

In my current role, I’m fortunate to lead projects that explore the edges of what’s possible. Whether it's building VR simulations for surgical training, developing AR tools for retail visualization, or mentoring Portland-based AR/VR startups, I approach each challenge with a focus on blending technology with real-world utility.
One of our recent prototypes involved integrating real-time environmental data into a VR learning platform—allowing students to interact with simulations that respond dynamically to their surroundings. This kind of adaptive, immersive learning would’ve seemed like science fiction five years ago. Today, it’s a viable solution.

Virtual and augmented economies will expand, creating jobs and platforms we can’t yet imagine.
And most importantly, immersive tech will become invisible—not because it’s gone, but because it will feel like a natural extension of our environment.

The convergence of AR, VR, and spatial computing isn’t just a technical evolution—it’s a human evolution. We’re learning to build digital experiences that don’t distract us from the world, but deepen our engagement with it.
