3CAG, Kneecap (2018)
3CAG is provocative with such rare expertise; fun and slick and absurd and incisive, six years might’ve passed since Kneecap’s debut mixtape but it’s no wonder the trio are still so hyped. Bring on the album/film.
Pick: ‘Amach anocht’

9 & 22!
9. what song(s) fit the vibe of your favourite character?
although i do have ever growing playlists for both mello and matt, if i had to choose just one song for both of them... how difficult. mello perhaps seven devils by florence and the machine and matt would currently be 3CAG by kneecap. i really can't narrow them down to one song each, but i feel like these two work for now.
22. a favourite Death Note theory.
this is like asking me to choose my favourite between my two cats, except i have five thousand cats, in this instance. with that being said i will always and forever be fascinated by anything relating to the shinigami eyes, and this excellent post by wormboytrav really made me aware of the numerous theories one could have regarding how exactly beyond birthday was able obtain them from birth. my favourite of these? the possibility he never had them to begin with. fascinating.

Fine Art-KNEECAP
released - 14/06/24 - 18 songs, 37 min
I knew I would love KNEECAP coming in; when a band is constantly praised by your favourite artists, it’s hard to not expect that. However, what I didn’t expect was the unique and seamless mix of Irish and English in rap. I found this so impressive, especially as the rhyme scheme is kept throughout those switches.
A lot of the album, and KNEECAP in general, is centered around life in Ireland as a post colonial country and their relationship with Irish and English as a result. This is shown incredibly through the samples, with Irish artists such as Joe O Donnell + films like ‘Dancing on Narrow Ground' being used.
The instrumentals vary constantly, keeping the album fresh and exciting; from the folk samples of 3CAG elevated by soft vocals, to the almost dance music Parful and the divine bass line in ‘Better Way to Live'. Speaking of this song, it was by far my favourite on the album; Grian Chatten, lead singer of by far one of my favourite modern day bands, adds another level to their rapping. This is true for other features such as Nino in ‘Loving Making’, but I enjoyed it most with Grian.
One tool I really appreciated on this album is the interludes, which not only added some level of storytelling to the album (from meeting the British man in ‘KNEECAP Chaps’ to Harrow Road being about London), but also keeps the album lighthearted and an easy listen. This is also very reminiscent of Kojaque‘s most recent album, and as they frequently collaborate on live performances, I can’t help but wonder if there was a link of inspiration here. The album ends on such a surprisingly positive note with ‘Way Too Much’, which takes a very individualistic approach in looking after yourself, which I think is a lovely sentiment. It also features a beautiful slap bass line and a choir, the latter of which somehow enforces the message. Overall, this is a great album, and I can’t wait to see where else KNEECAP go with their music.
-Send recommendations in my asks ! Sorry for not being here for the last month, hopefully this overly yammering post makes up for it lol

You did the album ask so here’s an album that I’ve had on repeat.
3CAG by KNEECAP
Lmk what you think and if you have a fav song from it :) it’s Irish rap and it slaps even if ur not that into rap imo.
okay this is very far off my usual music but it does absolutely slap you're right!
my favourite song is cearta by far i really enjoy the chorus in particular
second place either incognito or your sniffer dogs are shite (the latter mostly because the background like. bass? reminds me of a game that uses that kind of sound a lot lol)

“You’re in there enjoying a pint at the start of the night then you go to the toilet and someone’s offering you cocaine, you go out and have a fag and bump into new people and all the time, the mood and the energy keeps changing…”, erzählt Moglaí Bap. “The challenge was to show versatility across all the genres of hip hop. We wanted to do all of that whilst sounding cohesive. The pub was a really good way of tying it all together”, ergänzt Mo Chara.
There were no words for drugs in the Irish language so we had to invent them. We’d recycle old words and apply them to modern things”, so Mo Chara.
The band Kneecap claim the mural is just a piece of fine art’. “So we sampled it into a dance tune and dropped it in where it kicks. That’s where the title comes from - when we were getting stick about the mural that’s the term we used. Because that’s the best description isn’t it? If you don’t get it, you don’t get it. It’s still fine art.” Der Titeltrack folgt auf die Single "Sick In The Head", die die Band auch schon bei Jimmy Fallon in der Tonight Show performt hat, und die erste Auskopplung "Better Way To Live" (feat. Grian Chatten).

Tracklist "Fine Art": 01. 3CAG (ft. Radie Peat) 02. Fine Art 03. I bhFiacha Linne 04. I’m Flush 05. Better Way To Live (ft. Grian Chatten) 06. Sick In The Head 07. Love Making 08. Drug Dealin Pagans 09. Harrow Road (ft. Jelani Blackman) 10. Parful 11. Rhino Ket 12. Way Too Much

the pain of loving you - dolly parton/emmylou harris/linda ronstadt (this is one of my aunt's favorite albums and i have weirdly fond memories of listening to it with her on this chaotic car ride? also we sang this at my singing group last week)
365 - charli xcx
with or without you - u2 (funny story...my dad used to play this song all the time when i was a kid and i would get so upset because the high pitched sounds at the beginning made me imagine 'the end of the world' and i'd start to panic...me as a small kid aesthetic lol)
moonlight - kali uchis (thank u to the david raya comp a goonerina made that had this song in it)
another zuzu album recommendation!!! hot paradox by martin dupont...AMAZING 80s aesthetics. fav tracks so far: full moons and mouths hot paradox my analyst assez inside out
*
first to love - blaqk audio (saw this live with davey at his gay best and i remembered how much i listened to it when it came out)
you're makin me high - toni braxton (WHY would someone think hot to go was good horny sentiment when this exists. someone please help the young gay girls)
still haven't found what i'm looking for - u2
kneecap (duhh): fine art obviously but the 3cag EP has been a little more my speed this month, it's more stripped-down so a different vibe
work it - missy elliott (every once in a while i have to revisit this video because not only is the song a true blast from the past, missy elliott's gender vibe in this is sublime)

Kneecap are a Belfast, Northern Ireland-based hip-hop trio with the stage names Mo Chara, Mógla Bap, and DJ Próva. They sing in Irish and often reference their support for republicanism. They first began releasing music in 2017 with their single "C.E.A.R.T.A." (Irish for "RIGHTS" as in human rights). They released their first album, 3CAG, in 2018, and continued to release various singles, such as "Get Your Brits Out". Buy Kneecap Merch Here!

she'd managed to translate some of the vocabulary from the sci-fi but bc she doesn't read or watch sci-fi in any language she didn't have any frame of reference for the concept of, for example, a space station with multiple rings, so she couldn't make sense of "fáinne cónaithe" at all. i was pulling up pictures to show her 😅 and she was incredibly disappointed to discover that the irish word for a hatch is a "haiste" (which. fair. but it comes from maritime vocab so we can't blame this on the sci-fi authors)
in fairness, she was starting with chapter 3 of a novel having not read the first two chapters and i forgot to explain that a) the characters were in space and b) one of them was an android. thank god the guy with fluent (ulster) irish showed up bc he's also read the book and could explain parts of it much better than me – and could argue with her about the syntax of one sentence (apparently that phrase doesn't exist in munster irish; it's connacht irish in the book there). so we got there eventually i think
explaining "3cag", on the other hand, was a whole other kettle of fish
extremely funny watching my irish teacher who mostly deals with medieval lit and 18th century poetry encounter a) sci-fi in irish and b) kneecap
#her irish is like. rural kerry irish#(she's american but that's where she learned it)#god it's very funny. she does not have very good tech skills and sometimes seems stuck in the 60s#she caused an inconvenience the other day by paying for an event by cheque#but I'm not sure if that's bc she's old school or bc she's american lol#irish#gaeilge
