Alley Crawford, Producer, 3 Amigonauts
Brown Bag Films producer Alley Crawford has been an animation aficionado since she was just a wee tyke! She chatted with us about her experience producing the fresh and funny, goof ball comedy, 3 Amigonauts! Read the full story below and find out Alley’s favourite episode and which Amigonaut she identifies with most!
1. To get started I always ask for a favourite life motto or quote?
Integrity is crucial.
2. What is your origin’s story? (How did you get started in your career?)
I fell in love with animation watching Saturday morning cartoons with my sister - Looney tunes, Smurfs, He-Man, Astro-boy, Animaniacs, Ninja Turtles… After pursuing a double Bachelor’s degree in Film Production and Fine Arts, making the career change to animation seemed like a natural and progressive direction.
3. What does a day in the life an animation producer look like?
Day to day as an Animation Producer is a balance between logistical, technical and creative. Basic rule is to support the creative while maintaining the schedule, budget and crew.
4. What did you love most about working on Season 1 of 3 Amigonauts?
There are many things that I loved about working on the ‘3 Amigonauts’, but I would have to say that the unique stories and incredible art really stand out for me. I also have a soft spot for the music from the amazingly talented Kid Koala, DJ Vekked and Patrick Cooke.
5. What do you think makes 3 Amigonauts one of the best new show in the galaxy?
I have not seen another show that looks like ‘3 Amigonauts’ on Canadian television. It makes no apologies with the neon arcade-colours, graphic beauty shots and almost rudimentary animation style.
6. Without spoiling too much what is one of your favourite moments from the show?
Favorite show moment is probably the ‘fart-battle’ between Kirbie and the Shaman of Stink. It’s ridiculously explosive.
7. What is your number one reason why everyone needs to watch the 3 Amigonauts?
Some of the best dialogue was improvised and the cast are hilarious!
8. Which Amigonaut are you most like and why?
I feel like I am closest to Herby. As series producer, I must be a leader. Like Herby, things don’t always go my way or end up how I intended, but that just makes me strive higher. This is where creativity is key.
9. Anything you would like to share – like funny behind the scenes moments, interesting tid-bits about the making of the show that people might like to know, cool voice talents, things that stand out.
We often recorded Herby (Annick Obonsawin), Kirbie (Julie Sype) and Burt (Doug Hadders) as an ensemble and it really made a difference nurturing the relationships between their characters. Recording Donnie (Cory Doran) was always a riot because he is possibly be the funniest man alive!

Years ago, I created a short called ‘The 3 Amigonauts’. It caught the eye of a wonderful Tammy Semen, who pitched it around and in 2011, optioned it to 9 Story Entertainment. After years of learning the world of development I figured the life of this concept was dead- just part of the business. Fast forward to 2015- I took a dream job and relocated to Tinstletown- two months later YTV green lit 26 episodes of three little Amigonauts, with production in Toronto. Two dreams came within a two month period- when it rains, it pours.
It’s been a crazy two years, and this August, ‘3 Amigonauts' will premiere on YTV in Canada. We had a very small team bringing this to life, multiple hats were worn by many and I’m extremely grateful for all the blood sweat and tears lost by this Amigonaut team. Thanks to everyone who had a hand in the show, and especially to the few that had to deal with me on a daily basis via email/phone: Our insanely talented Director Mike Geiger, the glue of our team- Alley Crawford (Producer) and Emily Lindsay-Bick (Production Manager), the always hilarious Laurie Elliot (Story Editor) and my incredibly supportive wife Kelly Magee, who had to deal with me 24 hours of the day. It's been a ride, and I've learned a ton. Here's the first image for these 3 little space explorers.
More to come this weekend….

Creator Profile - Kyle Marshall, 3 Amigonauts
9 Story’s new show 3 Amigonauts, created by Kyle Marshall, premieres Saturday August 5, at 8am on YTV!
Set in Earth’s far-flung future, 3 Amigonauts goes where no goofball has gone before! The series follows three lovably reckless pals who attend the solar system’s most prestigious space academy and super-size the smallest tasks into madcap intergalactic adventures.
We sat down with 3 Amigonauts creator, the endlessly talented Kyle Marshall, and had him share the story behind the story of this fresh and unique show.
And did we mention the Unikraken? Because there is one of those as well!
1. To get started what is your favourite life motto or quote?
I don't know if I have a favorite motto or quote, but I do believe a big part of success is just sitting down and getting your idea done and out there. We can tend to hang on to ideas, drawings, etc, but you need to just sit down and get it done. Grind through the problems and learn from them, release the idea into the world, and move on to the next.
2. What is your origin’s story? (How did you get started in your career?)
Born and raised in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and went to a small animation school in Saskatoon. Started out as an animator and worked a few small gigs in Sask and P.E.I., before moving to work in Ottawa at Mercury Filmworks. Started as an animator there, but then worked my way through the pipeline as a character designer, board artist, AD and then directing. Always wanted to create my own stuff and did a few shorts along the way before getting into pitching concepts for TV. So many kids come out of school wanting to run their own show from day one, but I found it invaluable to go through the pipeline learning from the vets, playing different roles, and understanding what goes into a full production.
3. Now as the creator of the Amigonauts, can you share a little of their origins story, how they came to be?
It all started with the name, I just thought '3 Amigonauts' was funny. I then started to doodle around with them, and created a short trailer for the interwebs. Mike Geiger (who became the director on the series) created an online comic site, where 5 artists each had a day of the week to release a comic. My day was Thursday, and that's where the first storylines of the Amigonauts appeared. The designs were completely different and it was about three brothers instead of the two boys and girl we have now.
4. What is the coolest thing about what you do? Or what do you love most about your job?
I make cartoons and get paid for it, life's good.
5. As a creator what is your top piece of advice to fellow artists trying to get a show off the ground?
Firstly, as mentioned above, go through the pipeline, gain some experience, learn from those around you. I'd strongly recommend boarding on a few shows before trying to get your own. If possible, direct on a series or even do a few of your own shorts. Writing a few scripts and sitting in a writers’ room would also be a valuable experience. Also, pitch, pitch and more pitching. You'll learn from each failed concept, and become a better storyteller and pitch artist.
6. Without spoiling too much what is one of your favourite moments from the show?
There's a number of episodes that really stand out - Unikraken, Cheese Your Own Adventure and Ultimate Explorer's Club, but I'd say the final scene of the finale was a favorite moment.
Hamburger Helper's also up there as it was one of the first storylines from the original concept, and to see it make it on TV is cool. In all the Amigonaut episodes, we wanted to wrap some crazy and fun around a real emotion and a bit of heart.
7. Which of the 3 Amigonauts are you most like and why? Herby, Kirbie or Burt?
I see myself as more of a Herby, small guy who wanted to prove his worth to the world.

8. Anything you would like to share – like funny behind the scenes moments, interesting tid-bits about the making of the show that people might like to know, cool voice talents, things that stand out. Etc.
I had worked on the show remotely, only getting to be with the crew a few times during the production, so most of my time was spent late at night on my own in front of the computer, and that's never too interesting unless you stub your toe or something. Having artists like Kid Koala and DJ Vekked doing the music was incredible. The voice talent was amazing, and the writing rooms were a blast. I would also like to mention, we had a very small team and I'm grateful for everything the crew did for the show. Many people had to take on multiple roles to get this done, Francis Yeh was not only our character designer but our location and prop designer. Mike Geiger was not only our director, but our animation director and pitched in on art direction, the guy was everywhere! Emily Lindsay, our production manager was a puppeteer for an episode; Alley Crawford wasn't just producing, but became the music and SFX director. The list goes on... I’ve never worked on a production like that, and to have the people step up to fill in roles was amazing.

We 3 Amigonauts!
Last night, as I was recording animated films to watch over the Christmas season, I happened to stumble upon a promo for 3 Amigonauts!
Though an exact date has not yet been specified, they will appear in the UK on the POP! Max channel, like the other Canadian space-themed show, Winston Steinburger & Sir Dudley Ding-Dong.
As soon as the episodes start airing, I’ll be sure to put up a review on my blog.
In the meantime, you can check out the official Tumblr blog of the show here: @3amigonauts
[If you don’t want to be spoiled before the show appears on POP! Max, then I advise you go to the Archives page and work your way from there.]

Director Profile - Mike Geiger, 3 Amigonauts
Meet award-winning artist and creator Mike Geiger, director of the summer’s “space-iest” animated show, 3 Amigonauts! We chatted with Mike about what he thinks makes 3 Amigonauts stand out from the crowd, and why you don’t want to miss out seeing a single episode of this madcap intergalactic animated adventure series!
1. To get started can you share a favourite life motto or quote?
Cut yourself some slack. Remember, 100 years from now, all new people.
2. What is your origin story? (How did you get started in your career?)
My interest spawned from skateboarding culture in the late 80s/early 90s. Artists like Jim Phillips, Twist (Barry McGee), Dave Kinsey, and Andy Howell who were designing graphics back then all had an illustrative style that lent itself really well to animation.
3. What does a day in the life an animation director look like?
Mainly reviewing leicas, scripts, cuts, records, mixes, and so forth. Just trying to keep things consistent with Kyle Marshall’s (the creator) vision as much as possible.
4. What did you love most about working on Season 1 of 3 Amigonauts?
The opportunity to work with a lot of artists I admire like Kyle Marshall, Firas Momani, Kid Koala, DJ Vekked, Terry McGurrin, Laurie Elliot and the whole writing crew, the voice talent, Andy Guiterrez, Oliver Costes, Dave Pietila, and the list goes on...
5. What do you think makes 3 Amigonauts one of the best new show in the galaxy? (What makes it stand out from the crowd?
From story to colour, the show does have a different vibe than viewers may be used to. I’m proud that we were able to lean into some new territory. All credit goes to Kyle for having the vision and our YTV exec Matt Sheppo for trusting us to execute on it. It takes a lot of extra work from the entire team to try to break convention, and I'm appreciative of our crew for believing in the show enough to accept that.
6. Without spoiling too much, what is one of your favourite moments from the show?
Herby befriending a rock is one of my faves.
7. What is your number one reason why everyone needs to watch 3 Amigonauts?
So the next day you don’t feel left out when your friends are talking about the cool new show they saw. Remember what happened when you didn't watch Game of Thrones?
8. Which Amigonaut are you most like and why?
The Amigonauts are at their best when they are able to bounce off-of one another. So I'm cheating and going with the group.
9. Anything you would like to share – like funny behind the scenes moments, interesting tid-bits about the making of the show that people might like to know.
Back in 2010, I used to be a contributing artist to a weekly comic site called THE SUPERVILLAIN with fellow artists Mick Harrison, Hobo Divine, Scott Macdonald and Kyle Marshall. Kyle's weekly contribution was called, none other than, The 3 Amigonauts! So it’s been fun to follow the idea from early comics to completed television show.
