there's a really funny 3d printing controversy going on btw.

if you don't know, there's a very popular 3d printing model out there called "benchy". this is used for benchmarking your 3d printer because it's a difficult print and will help test it out.

this is so widely used that people make their own little versions of it, remixing the 3d model to make benchy look cooler and stuff. however, a new company owns the benchy license. they are sending copyright takedowns to all those who wrongfully uploaded the benchy model.

of course, this is pissing off the 3d printing community greatly. everyone loved benchy and have used it for years. so someone on reddit decided to make a new model that is designed as a 3d printing stress test. one that works a lot like benchy, and people are freely able to edit it as they please. you know what they called it?

Ok so recently this new company bought the company that made the 3Dbenchy and started enforcing it's no derivatives rule (that was technically always there but never enforced untill now) so people are i think quite reasonably upset about it, and 1 guy on reddit decided to make a new benchmark model. This time of a bench, and he called it the 3d boaty

Fun fact! That tiny boat is known as a 3DBenchy, and is one of the most common 3D Printing test files. Many modern printers even ship with the Benchy file built in.

10 billion 3dbenchys printed zero practical applications found. if you need me i'll be sitting upon my alabaster throne of mdf and zip ties.

so tired of 3d printing nerds acting like it's the "greatest rapid prototyping tool" as if anything will ever compare to the glory of foam board and hot glue. yeah your fancy new corexy printer or whatever is cool but stop acting like printing out waifu figurines off thingiverse is the embodiment of the maker spirit. if your house isn't full of electronics that look like middle school science fair projects you can't really call yourself a maker.

I'm back after a short brake so let's start with this cool @3dbenchy. I scaled it up in PrusaSlicer to 250% and printed it in 50 micron on the Original Prusa SL1S Speed by @josefprusa. I actually use these larger Benchy prints as phone stands and it works very well. Behold, my FANTASTIC BOAT! My new 3D printer (a Creality Ender 3 Pro) arrived today, and I spent all evening putting it together. Benchy here was my first test print to make sure it works properly, and... heck yeah! Little bit steppy on the roof, but otherwise, she’s a jolly fine vessel!

Been working on my #robo3d #r1plus firmware settings, so I decided it was time to try my first #3dbenchy . Temperature too high and it's not hard to guess what layer I remembered I'd disabled the cooling fan, but other than temperature and maybe adjust retraction, it looks satisfactory to me. 0.2mm layer height, white #dazzlelight pla, stock extruder. #3dprinting #makersgonnamake #toyboat (at Saukville (town), Wisconsin)
