However, the game takes this tried-and-true mechanic to a new level by combining it with a survival story and evolutionary themes. Players control Dodo, a lovable dinosaur, as it tries to escape an apocalyptic meteor shower destroying its once-peaceful prehistoric world.
Key Mechanics:

Key Power-Ups:
Shield: Protects Dodo from collisions for a limited time.
Speed Boost: Temporarily increases running speed to escape dangerous areas.
Magnet: Attracts coins, making it easier to collect them without changing direction.
These power-ups can be strategically used to tackle challenging levels, adding a layer of tactical gameplay to the fast-paced action.
Automatic Controls for Accessibility
One of the defining aspects of Dodo Run is its accessibility. The game features intuitive and automatic controls, making it easy for players of all skill levels to pick up and play. With simple swipe or tap gestures, players can control Dodo’s movements seamlessly.
This focus on user-friendly controls ensures that Dodo Run appeals to both casual gamers and seasoned endless runner enthusiasts.
Skillful Challenges & Collectibles:

UE5 Niagara: Adding a stylized ribbon trail to my game
Tumblr media
Here's my final product, it's two ribbons put together to make one glowing emissive thin ribbon.
Tumblr media
I achieved this by using seperate material instances on both ribbons, and changing the width, on each material instance I modified the emissions to create a glowing effect from the middle.

I feel like a recent years have shown that fan reaction has influenced the way Sega handles Sonic in some ways. Frontiers for example in a lot of ways feels like a reaction to complain. So a lot of fans have had about mainline Sonic games.
With that said what do you think about Sega making a multi-character 3D action game Sonic and then slapping it on a platform that has some of the least amount of player reach despite being a mainline platform?
I would be very curious to know more about the development behind Dream Team for sure, but as far as I'm aware the game was more than likely made specifically for Apple Arcade from the very start with heavy involvement from Apple, rather than being a project Sega was shopping around that just so happened to end up as an Apple exclusive.
I have to assume that this game would not exist at all if it wasn't an Apple Arcade project. Hardlight is very much Sega's mobile game division first and foremost, so it's unlikely (if not impossible) that Sega would've had them working on a 3D Sonic platformer for consoles and PC when that's Sonic Team's job. And Apple Arcade's subscription revenue is basically the only home for mobile games that aren't chock full of ads, microtransactions, and wait timers these days. So while it could theoretically get ported elsewhere in the future, it's unlikely that Dream Team ever would've gotten made for any other platform.
Like, there are already two Sonic games on Apple Arcade. Sonic Racing (based off of TSR) was one of the earliest releases for the service and has always been heavily promoted as one of Apple Arcade's flagship games. Later they also did Sonic Dash+, a version of the existing endless runner game with the ads and microtransactions stripped out. I have to assume that these games have done well on Apple Arcade, and Apple simply looked at that and went "Hey, what if we got them to make us an ORIGINAL Sonic game?" Apple Arcade also appeals pretty heavily to parents who want their kids to have something to play on their iPads that isn't cram full of microtransactions, and Sonic remains extremely popular with kids.
But beyond that, why they landed on a full 3D platformer with SIX playable characters, some amount of story, and a new style of level design that takes some influence from skate parks? Who knows. Maybe some folks at Sega Hardlight were just dying to make something like that, and the Apple gig was their opportunity to make it happen after so many years being stuck working on glorified Skinner boxes. Or maybe Apple thought a 3D platformer would be good to diversify their portfolio. Again, I'd be very curious to learn more
(Also, honestly, as annoyed as I am that I have to play Dream Team on my iPad instead of my PC or a console, I do find the talking point that "no one will be able to play it" extremely silly. There are billions of iPhones, iPads, Mac computers, and to a lesser extent Apple TVs out there. Billions. With a B. Apple Arcade reportedly had over 100 million users last year. That's quadruple the number of subscribers Game Pass had, even though if you asked the average gamer they'd probably assume Game Pass was the more popular one! Exclusivity is always frustrating, and I sympathize with folks annoyed that they don't have any devices that can play it, but the fandom deciding that "only six people will be able to play this" is completely divorced from reality.)

things that will make me delete your mobile game (tag the game that checks all these boxes for you):
- 6+ ads after login (ads for the in game shop count)
- daily login bonus that resets to a pittance if you miss one day
- daily login bonus that ticks over at precisely 6:42 in the evening every day
- the game yells at you or tells you “the fictional entities miss you! ;(“ if my phone has been broken for two weeks so I can’t log in
- seasonal content that never comes back except in the “Premium (extremely expensive)” shop section
- pay money to buy coins to buy gems to buy things
- ONLY lets you buy things with money
- game runs so inefficiently that your iphone 14 burns your hand
- 40 game mechanics/tutorials for an app you will ONLY be opening during a car ride or waiting for class to start or what have you
- Snorpi Gritta, the Plunquette™ on the app icon, isn’t who you play as, but rather someone you COULD play as if you had $6000 to roll the gacha
- game walks you through how to play the game and use every single sub-menu even if you have 15 other apps of the same genre installed
- “this game wants to know your location, track data across other apps, serve you personalized ads, know your star sign, access your bank account, edit your last will and testament, name your firstborn, succeed your place as King of Flartania, be betrayed by the evil wizard Karklon, send you notifications…”
- the gacha/lootbox system is rigged so that you literally cannot get what you want too many times in a row
- having a gacha system in lieu of a shop you can spend those fictional coins you’ve been earning
- having a gacha system after I paid to download the app in the first place
- being genshin impact
- ads for your mobile game popping up in other apps when I already downloaded the thing (maybe the most minor complaint on this list but it bugs me)
- game sends me a notification to not miss out on a daily login streak
- you have to sign up with your phone number as if Snorpi Gritta herself is going to call you personally and tell you what a good boy you are for downloading her game or something
- every single character is extremely sexy (insert your favorite gacha game here)
- every single character is extremely un-sexy but always seem to be pulling a facial expression like they think they’re extremely sexy (subway surfers)
- game constantly updating for the most minor patches imaginable
- overly excessive customization with characters’ upgrades and gear to the point where there’s a separate wiki for the game’s lore and for the game’s meta
- “link a friend” or “join a team” systems as if I’ll ever tell anyone what games are on my phone
- your game is a pared-down version of a game I could be playing on the Switch, 3DS or Steam Deck right now
- your game is a pared-down version of a game I could be playing on the Switch, 3DS or Steam Deck right now and it serves 50 ads a minute when the original doesn’t
- charge mechanics that limit how much you can actually play, as if the game thinks “it’s not healthy to be on phone games all day!! :)” when I’m just really good at the game and am waiting for someone in the doctor’s office
- ^that but you can also PAY to keep playing the free mobile game and it’s prohibitively expensive
- Snorpi Gritta gets replaced on the app icon and now I have to look at Narmu Spartea who (despite her HUGE rack) I absolutely hate as a character since she’s taken over the meta
- your mobile game is just another match-3 or endless runner
- your mobile game is just another gacha game
- your mobile game is just another shooter with terrible controls
- the characters in your gacha have seasonal alts which I can’t purchase with in game currency and they won’t return until the “throwback gacha!!” which will only come around in 6 months when I will have forgotten all about the game
- you as the developer confirm that Snorpi Gritta is aro-ace which means that I, personally, have absolutely no chance with her, the fictional Plunquette on my iphone
- game asks your age before you start the game, which means you bet your bottom Gem they’ll be maliciously advertising things to you
- your mobile game is just Club Penguin with extra steps
- your game’s title is extremely unwieldy to say, only tangentially relates to the gameplay and/or has no discernible way to be shortened if someone asks what I’m playing (the “rooty tooty fresh and fruity” conundrum, EVERY gacha game falls under this without exception)
- online multiplayer that you have to engage with despite not playing the meta (Narmu Spertea can kiss my Assassin-Reverend Jennathy Larginhoffer I’m not putting that wretched busty harlot on my squad)
- your mobile game has spoilers so if I follow the “#⭐️Magic!!⭐️ Plunquettes™ of Harmenheim” tag on tumblr I’ll see EVERYTHING that happens in the final chapter as well as the ending of every seasonal side-story
- your game has crossover content with your other mobile game that literally no one ever is going to download (but you have to download it to access the best stuff in the game)
- your mobile game is a classic board game that I’ve already downloaded in the form of a classic board game collection
- your mobile game erases my account after 2 weeks without logging in like it’s a website from 2004
- I download the better version of the game on PC (rarely though Balatro comes around and does the opposite where I played the mobile game more, so kudos if your game does that)
- your game deletes my cloud save and all of my 140+ hours of progress if I change phones (Balatro… ;( )
- your game always logs me into Apple Game Center (the worst game service known to man) so someone at Apple ALWAYS knows that I play Plunquettes of Harmenheim
- your game sends me notifications because someone else is calling for aid in an Ultra Battle even though they are WELL AWARE I won’t be running Narmu and I still have Ningland van Grotteschuler on my team as a joke
- ^bonus points if that notification comes at 3AM (yes I’m awake but no I didn’t want the notification)
- my blorbo gets nerfed into the ground so the auto-optimizer never picks them for my squad, so I have to manually do it every time
- my mom starts playing the game (this isn’t your fault as a dev but our fault as a society)
- my favorite vtuber starts playing the game (this isn’t your fault as a game developer)
- my favorite vtuber starts playing the game badly and forces me to crash out in her chat (this isn’t your fault as a game developer)
- my favorite vtuber starts playing the game and puts that hag Narmu Spertea on her squad and forces me to yeet bees at her (this is your fault as a game developer)
- your game is an AI art visual novel
- your game is a brand-affiliated mobile game that makes the thing I like feel less like a thing I like and more like a brand
- your game preys upon FOMO even on a day-by-day basis with “flash sales”
- one of my tumblr mutuals doesn’t like the game and mentions any of the points on this list
- <insert infamous person on the internet> LOVES the game and makes me delete it out of fear of association in any capacity
- i downloaded your game 5 years ago and quickly deleted it, and when i install it today those memories come flooding back to me like it’s the Vietnam War
- you as a developer express an opinion I don’t like
- you removed a mechanic or a mini game that turned out to be the one thing keeping me playing
- your game is just Vampire Survivors
- your game is just Vampire Survivors, but it isn’t HoloCure
- the text in your really well polished mobile game has translation errors and/or typos, which renders certain scenes incomprehensible (but if those errors make it VERY unintentionally-funny, that won’t make me delete it)
- your game was big in 2011 because of the mobile game boom but is actually just a one-button game or playing with rocks
- your game is sex-bait but nobody has written fanfiction about the characters on ao3
- your game is sex-bait but the gameplay is subway surfers
- your game is sex-bait but the player character is the ugliest mf this side of Cleveland, Missouri
- your game is sex-bait and I get an advertisement for it on the mobile app for tumblr dot com
- your game is sex-bait and you introduce the “really 700 years old” trope
- your game is sex-bait and you introduce the inverse of the “really 700 years old” trope
- you buffed Narmu Spertea and left my darling Jennathy. To rot. In the dungeon for a thousand years
- your game is a free beta that has been a beta for 15 years
- your game has dating sim mechanics, but Assassin-Reverend Jennathy Larginhoffer simply WILL NOT date me because of her religious tenets and because it would put me at risk of being killed to get to her
- your game has dating sim mechanics, encourages polygamy, and the game judges you for it (even if you only try to woo Ms. Rev. Larginhoffer and your heart belongs to no one else)
- the dating sim mechanics in your game buff the characters, so you MUST engage with everyone on your team romantically in order to buff them, even if Ningland is the single least attractive unit in the game
- I find out your game has a huge memory leak
- I start playing the game, spend 4 minutes waiting for the game to load, and the battery goes from 76% to 14% in that time
- vanilla extract

You've tempted me enough, which one of the like five cookie run games do u recommend
what have I done.
okay but for my serious answer it really depends what kind of mobile games you like! I’ll name the pros and cons of the 4 games that are like. most popular/actually playable rn:
(this got long. under the cut it goes)
cookie run: kingdom
PROS:
admittedly the one I’ve sunk the most hours into
It’s a city builder!! You can make really cool kingdoms the community is creative with that even if that side isn’t very loud or prominent. There are some MASTERPIECES
while the battling can be very samey, it’s also fun and can be genuinely difficult at times if (like me) you aren’t super good at games! there is a lot of tactics you can use for harder story levels
the story is genuinely interesting and while all the cookie language can make me wince, this game has also made me cry before and it’s very compelling when it wants to be
CONS:
Where do I even begin
PAY TO WIN. like. Technically you don’t have to, I haven’t spent a dime on CRK and I don’t plan to, but if you take one look at the arena leaderboard you’ll see it’s full of whales
It’s a gacha game, and while all the CR games are gacha games at least on some level, it’s most prominent in CRK. Get lucky (beginners luck seemed to be a thing though so idk maybe you will)
The story is interesting sure but the lore is WILD and keeps GOING . one hit after the other. we try our best here
Cookie Run: Ovenbreak
PROS:
my favourite my little baby girl (I haven’t touched it in a month I haven’t played the latest update)
In terms of gameplay? By FAR my favourite, an actual endless runner game.
The least gacha dependant game ! Only really the costume and the treasure gacha
The costumes SLAP like THEY GO SO HARD
CONS
Even I don’t fully understand Ovenbreak Lore there’s like 80 diff things happening at once story wise
Despite the fact that the cookies are no longer dependant on the gacha system to get, that doesn’t mean I enjoy the system that is present instead now (if the star candy system has no haters I’m dead)
The graphics… are a mixed bag. bc on one hand there are stunning cutscene arts, costumes, and newer cookies look gorgeous. on the other hand
Tumblr media
what happened to my son
Cookie Run: Witches Castle
PROS:
Honestly this one’s gonna be very brief, I don’t play this one
It’s a match game though!
Characters and lore seem very interesting but I just couldn’t get into it
CONS:
I can’t really do this for a game I played once
BUT I didn’t really understand the gacha system when I did so like that’s worth mentioning
Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures
PROS:
Game came out less than a month ago, I don’t have everything unlocked yet as well, BUT I do play it
This game is so cute the 3D graphics are AMAZING
Gameplay is very fun!!! The stages are all designed well and currently it’s a blast to play
CONS:
not many atm really this game is very new
INCREASE THE MOVEMENT SPEED IM BEGGING PLEASE PLESSE PLESDR PLEASE PLEASE
this is probably a me issue but my luck in this game is absolute ass so
I’m so fucking hungry but I can’t reheat my pizza bc the electrics off so this is how I spend my time waiting for a reply about that. enjoy
BONUS!!!
ranking them on the recommendation scale:
Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures
Cookie Run: Kingdom
Cookie Run: Ovenbreak
Cookie Run: Witches Castle

43 similarities between Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Boom!
1. They both have a minigame in which the main character works out with their strong buff friend! Both Minigames are button mashers too, and reward you with some sort of victory animation and collectables!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Both Crash 4 IAT and the Sonic Boom 3DS games reward you for collecting things and completing specific tasks within the stage! They are all gems/crystal inspired too, which is pretty cool!
3. Both Crash and Sonic have a smart and adorable siblin sidekick!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4. Both have legends of an ancient civilation that was supposedly very powerfull! While Crash didn't directly confirm it, I'm pretty much convinced they were the ones leaving those mysterious ruins!
5. Some of the developers of Crash's original trilogy also worked on Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric! One of the artists, Bob Rafei, even founded the studio that would pitch it! Take a pinch of salt with the following, But I heard some of those devs later worked on the new Crash games!
Tumblr media
6. Both Crash Mind over Mutant and the 3DS Sonic Boom titles allow you to enter your house, even if its just to access bonus content!
7. Uka Uka and Cortex have a very similair dynamic to that of Lyric and Cortex! Uka and Lyric are both ancient forces that manipulate a scientist (Cortex/Eggman) to free them and do their bidding!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Both Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot have a controversial Beat 'm up title with 2 player co-op!
9. Cortex and Eggman both got depressed at some point when realizing they were never able to beat their nemesis.
10. The Crash n' burn prototype made by Big Red Button features very similair environment design to Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric! This is likely because Big Red Button were the developers behind Boom, and were reusing assets to speed up prototyping!
youtube
11. Both Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Boom feature iconic crab enemies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
12. Both Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot have an overdosis of Jungle stages! Some of these games have atleast 4 different jungle worlds, some even are JUST jungle worlds!
13. The villains of both series are humans with a PhD in mad science
14. Both series take place on tropical islands!
15. Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Boom are both "Semi-consistent" timeline! The wrecked robot from titans remains there up to Crash on the Run, where you recycle its parts to make helpfull machines! HypnoBot returns as a villain because it feels Tails treated it very poorly..
16. Both Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot feature death routes/challenge rooms!
17. Mojo in Titans and Orbs in Sonic Dash 2: Boom are very similair in appearence!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18. Both Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Boom have been on an "indefinite hiatus". While Crash made an impressive comeback since, I'm afraid I can't say the same for Sonic Boom..
19. Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot are both written like cartoons! Crash Bandicoot takes heavy inspiration from Looney Tunes, while Sonic Boom tries to be more like a cartoon sitcom like the simpsons!
20. Both Crash and Boom offered an endless runner mobile game that use elements from their franchise (crates and collecting for Crash, enerbeam and combo from Boom) to improve and innovate upon the experience!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
21. Both franchises feature worlds that are inhabbited by regular animals, anthropomorphic animals, and on more rarer occasions, humans!
22. They both have an evil dimension with purple sky!
23. Speaking of dimensions, Team Sonic and Team Bandicoot have both traveled through different dimensions and time periods before!
24. Both Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Boom tend to refrence Uncharted time to time because their original developers worked on that project too! Crash Bandicoot tends to keep the refrences to social media posts, but Sonic Boom went as far to refrence it directly in its redesigns!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
25. From what I heard, the original plans for the Sonic Boom brand would be a more expirimental branch to try new stuff for the Sonic franchise, which were quickly axed when RoL happend.. Either way, these plans sound very similair to the PS2 crash line-up to me!
26. Both Amy and Crash Bandicoot have a spin attack ability!
27. If the Crash of the Titans shorts are to be believed, then both Crash Bandicoot and Sonic Boom have a village on their island!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
28. Both Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot devs put in lots of effort in on getting characterization right! Some even confirmed this in official interviews!
29. Another similarity between Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot is that both main characters live in a very small house near the beach!
30. Both series had their main protagonist team up with the main antagonist several times!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
31. Sonic Boom and Crash Bandicoot games tend to have their plot written around gems and crystals! Chances are that you will have to collect these before the villain does!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
32. Boom and Crash both try to diversify their content by adding gimmick stages! Some of these concepts are nearly 1:1 concepts!
33. World map design is very similair!
34. When there is no adventure on the schedule, the main protoganist tends to nap!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
35. Coco and Tails both have a similair attire, both wearing goggles and beltpouches!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
36. Boom Knuckles and Crunch both are pretty beefy characters that put a lot of effort in staying in shape! Both do lots of workouts and very clearly skip leg day!
37. Crash and Boom!Sonic both live near an native village!
38. Crash and Boom!Sonic are both troublemakers with a good heart! Basicially, they will save the day, but also leave a trail of destruction on their own.
39. Crash Twinsanity and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric are both ambitious titles that have more concept art then actual content! I'm talking mountains upon mountains of concept art! Go look it up, its a rabbit hole you wont get out of anytime soon!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
40. Meh Burger (Sonic Boom TV Show) and Dingo's Diner (Crash 4) are two infamous restaurants that ensure you never want to eat again!
BONUS:
41. Its about time and Rise of Lyric had similair ambitions for their visuals: Pushing the genre futher! Unfortunately, only one of them succeeded.. :c
42. Boom Tails was going to have a bazooka at some point! The design looks really similair to the Fruit Bazooka from Crash 3!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
43. Crash Twinsanity and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric both have some hubworlds where you can solve puzzels and get optional rewards!

Status Update: Runner Game Graphics Tests
See this update on the forum
Tumblr media
(fallback media link)
The last update on the runner game development progress was showing that all obstacles, coins, powerups, and track terrain & backgrounds could generate and would scroll like an endless treadmill below the runner. The screenshots, though, showed overly stark colours and a blank background and beams of sunlight rendering as solid black bars.
Next steps have therefore been to test out options to fix the graphics so they better match the old game, and are more pleasant to look at. An updated prototype showing improved graphics should be the next update.
The test environment screenshot above shows you some of the graphics I've been working on. The decompilation of the old game has successfully revealed the water shader they used, but three.js has a built-in water renderer (play around with it here!). This is a simpler water shader than the old game's one in some aspects (it has no fresnel), but to an initial scan looks perfectly fine for the background of the runner game.
I identified the position and colour of the main light source in the old game (here represented by the square and line), and found a lighting setting I needed to tweak based on the particular 3D model format I'm using for the background decorations. That results in the much less aggressive wood and leaf colours you can see in the island on the right of the image. three.js lighting automatically renders with shadows, as you can see here, whereas the old game appears to not bother. Shadows are computationally expensive, so we'll see if that ends up being a problem.
A few options were tested for the beams of light that fall across the track. There's a couple of ways to make a material that's partially transparent, with gaps in the light-beam pattern. A material that's affected by lights and shadows, like the rightmost one, doesn't make much sense for a beam of light. The middle beam was a method that's easy to implement, but distorts the colour. The leftmost beam is the approach I'll use. It keeps the colour a nice bright gold, isn't affected by other lights and shadows, and doesn't require excessive computational power to render.

Documentation of Ideas
Idea 1
Type of Arcade Game
I want to make a 3d platformer
Game Concept
My game is going to be a parkour type game where you have to make hard jumps or you lose a life. You will have to escape from a moving boundary. To win you will escape to an extraction zone or safe zone. It will have many routes to move through which should make it replayable.
Theme
My game starting point will be centered around the la wildfires. And I want to bring attention to the death and destruction it brings to not only human but plant and animal life.
Competitors / Inspiration (min. 3)
CRASH BANDICOOT
New Super Mario Bros. Wii Worlds 1 - 9 Full Game (100%)
Idea 2
Type of Arcade Game
For this game I want to make a 2D side scroller, This will be similar to the first Idea put put into a different way that seems to me more of an arcade style.
Game Concept
Mine will be a temple runner style 2D game, It will be platforming between burnt and ruined things from all aspects to life. You can win by escaping to a safe place, to make it replayable I will add speed power ups to make you faster which will mean it will take you less time to reach the end. This will then have a high score mechanic. People will then want to beat the high score.
Theme
My game will again be centered around the LA wildfires as this is a topic I care strongly about. I will have a moving wall making sure the player moves forward and at a fast pace.
Competitors / Inspiration (min. 3)
The Wall of Flesh - All Difficulties (Terraria 1.4 Beginner's Guide Series)
This will be similar to my wall of fire chasing the player.
Celeste - Full Game (No Commentary)
This will show the 2D design aspect that I want to go for.
Temple Run - Gameplay Walkthrough Part 1 10th Anniversary (Android,iOS)
This showcases having to run away from something moving closer.
Idea 3
Type of Arcade Game
I want to make a first person game that uses controls to sort rubbish
Game Concept
My game will be that you have to sort rubbish into different bins and see how quickly you can do it. I hope there will be different modes for different amounts of things to sort. There will be a timer and the aim is to sort in the lowest possible time. There will be A high score system so it will be competitive and replayable.
Theme
My game will be linked to recycling and waste disposal by teaching what is recyclable and where to put things that aren't.
Competitors / Inspiration (min. 3)
Papers, Please Walkthrough Days 1-2| Papers Please Playthrough Introduction
Liquid Sort Walkthrough
Final Outcome.
I have chosen to do my second Idea of making a 2d sidescroller that has to constantly move and jump past bits and pieces. there will also be power ups to make you jump higher and run faster. I also want to add a High score system to make the game more competitive.
For the competitors I have chosen:
The wall of flesh boss battle from terraria. This is a part that I defiantly want to add into my game. I like how the wall moves towards him making him move back at a constant speed. In my game death will be the motivator to keep the player away from the wall of fire.
youtube
Next is celeste, I want to add from this the general look of the main character and how it includes interesting level design. I like how it makes the character have to think. I will want it to be simpler like subway surfers where you can use very quick actions.
youtube
Last is temple run, I want my game to simulate how this game works with the endless jumps and dodges. It also includes collectables which I would like to add. This would make my game more replayable and enjoyable.

Voxel in video games
While a lot of video games have many shapes that make them up many games thrive off the simplicity of using cubes and squares for their foundation. This applies to both 2D, 2.5D and 3D game visuals.

Continuing a prototype
I decided to continue developing my endless runner prototype. I liked the idea of turning it into a predator/prey chase, and an endless runner has the perfect gameplay style for that.
I originally thought of following the idea that you are a prey animal being chased, like a rabbit.
However- I felt that it would be more interesting to play as a hunting predator. I have been playing several dinosaur games recently and so was inspired by these. However I wanted to use a less common dinosaur, and my personal favourite is the Microraptor.
A bonus to using this dinosaur is that they were known for being gliders, and this offers the opportunity to add a glide function into the game.
To bring this idea to life and include my 3D modelling skills, I decided to model a microraptor to add into the game as the player model.

Brick breaker research
Breakout:
Breakout is a classic brick breaker game originally played on arcade machines and now available on various platforms. The goal is to clear all the bricks on the screen by bouncing a ball off a paddle at the bottom. Its unique selling point is its simple, timeless gameplay and addictiveness. Players aim for high scores by clearing levels efficiently, and leaderboards provide a way to compete with others.
Arkanoid:
Arkanoid is an arcade-style brick breaker game available on multiple platforms. The main objective is to break all the bricks on each level by bouncing a ball off a paddle. Its unique selling point is the inclusion of power-ups, like lasers and multi ball, that add variety to the gameplay. With its classic feel and leaderboard, players can challenge themselves to beat high scores and progress through increasingly difficult levels.
Bricks DEMOLITION:
Bricks DEMOLITION is a mobile brick breaker game where the goal is to clear bricks on each level by controlling a paddle and ball. Its unique selling point is its wide variety of levels and power-ups, such as expanding the paddle or slowing the ball. The game also includes achievements and leaderboards, making it fun to challenge friends and see who can achieve the highest scores.
Anodia:
Anodia is a visually rich brick breaker game available on mobile devices. The aim is to break all the uniquely shaped blocks in each level by bouncing a ball with a paddle. Its unique selling point is the creative level design, where bricks come in different shapes and patterns, providing a fresh twist on the classic gameplay. Players can unlock achievements and compete on leaderboards.
Smash Hit:
Smash Hit is a mobile brick breaker game with a first-person perspective, where the goal is to smash glass obstacles by launching metal balls. Its unique selling point is its immersive 3D graphics and rhythmic gameplay, where players advance through futuristic environments while breaking as many glass objects as possible. The game features a distance-based scoring system and leaderboards, encouraging players to beat their own records and compete with friends.
Comparison:
All of these games have the same core gameplay, which is to use the ball to destroy the objects (usually bricks). However the only game to maintain that is Breakout, as it was the first brick breaker game. Unlike with endless runners, creators of brick breakers add another dynamic to the gameplay in an attempt to make it less repetitive and boring. Leaderboards also tend to be another common theme among brick breakers, and they tend to be successful due to their replayability, being easy to pick up but with the caveat of having to learn unique information about each game.

Endless Runner Concept
I would like to keep the 3 lane mechanics but I would like to change the camera angle to be on the side to make it 2.5D-ish.
I have some mechanics in mind already. I would like to have some walls that are unavoidable/ harder to dodge than normal walls that can be shot at and destroyed to make way for the player. Maybe I could also add a consumable that gives the player a double jump just like in Rogue Soul. And maybe something basic like another consumable that temporarily makes you invincible.
The game would have simply play as a cube that runs across the game endlessly. This is due to my interest in games like Flat Heroes and Just Shapes & Beats. I would like to make pixel art for the textures ill use in game but I might go and make some 3D models for it instead.
I think Id use 8-bit sound effects for this game like those from space invaders and such.

Endless Runner (SMART Targets 2!)
Specific- I will add sprites for the obstacles within my game to include more artwork and to have more things fit the 2D style compared to 3D which is what Unreal is.
Measurable- To do this I will make 1 enemy for the block to replace this while creating 1 animation to go alongside this.
Achievable- I believe that this goal can be achieved but will take longer than the first target to complete.
Relevant- This aligns with my ideas and my goal for the game as I wanted to make sprites for the obstacles anyway so this will be a great goal to achieve.
Time-Bound- I would like to get this goal achieved by this time next week. ( 9th to the 10th of October.)

Endless runner games - Crossy road
Tumblr media
Design wise the best thing for crossy road is its soft 3d pixelated graphics along with the bright colours and many different characters who all have different stages creating a larger variety of themes.

Research - Endless Runners
Alto's Odyssey:
The core game loop in Alto's Odyssey is jumping across sand dunes on a snowboard whilst travelling across different environments. The USP of the game is the different tricks you can do mid air and also the fact that the game can be played with just one hand.
Talking Tom Gold Run:
The main core loop of the game is you are chasing down a raccoon thief that has stolen gold bars from talking tom and you are to retrieve them by chasing down the criminal. The USP of the game is that instead of being chased like many other endless runners you are the one chasing which adds a new dynamic to the game.
Temple Run 2:
The core loop of this game is that the player is being chased by a giant monster through ancient ruins. The USP of the game is you can direct the runner through the ruins by tilting your smartphone.
Jetpack Joyride 2:
The core loop of this game is you play as the hero Barry Steakfries as he battles Professor Bains and a crew of evil villains. The USP of this game is that you fly with a jetpack instead of running and there are lots of power-ups and vehicles.
Crossy Road:
The core loop of this game is you guide a character forward by crossing streets and rivers whilst avoiding any cars or other obstacles and collecting as many coins as you can. The USP of this game is the large selection of characters to choose from and unlock.
Summary:
The main similarity between all of these games is the fact that you control a character and chasing or being chased by something. The differences they have are the amount of characters, power-ups, different mechanics and some are 2d whilst others are 3d. What makes these games successful is the replayability of them all and how addicting they can be. I think the one thing out of these games that doesn't really work in my opinion is in Temple Run 2, i feel like the tilting phone controls don't work well as many people would be more comfortable with button controls or swipe controls and could find the tilting annoying, a way to revise this would be by using a different type of control system but leaving the tilt controls in as a toggleable system for those who would want to use it.
