In the Belly of the Giant (23/39)
Chapter 23
Joey chugged another coffee as he watched the small red dot that represented the human bait blinking on his computer screen. Humans couldn’t walk very fast, having such short little legs, so the dot didn’t move much as it crawled sluggishly across the live map screen, close to the school. Joey had been observing for a couple hours now and was beginning to feel disheartened. He knew, logically, that he needed to be more patient, but didn’t know what he was going to do if his plan failed. He didn’t have any leads in the investigation. The last thing he wanted was a cold case when so many lives were at stake, including Eren’s.
Ray came into the room, chowing down on a family-size bag of chips as a late-night snack. “Anything new?” he asked, offering Joey some chips. Joey sighed, shook his head, and snagged a handful of greasy crisps, stuffing them into his mouth. As he crunched the chips with his teeth, he gazed with an empty expression at the screen, as if he were watching a program on TV. He tried to stay focused, but his eyes were glazing over with boredom and fatigue. His extended stint of long, stressful hours and late nights were wearing him down to a nub.
Abruptly, the slow-moving dot jumped and changed course, darting swiftly in the opposite direction. Joey snapped up, his fatigue vanishing into smoke. Ray was jolted out of his stupor with Joey’s jerky motion. The two cops watched the dot, spellbound, as it raced across the map. There was a pause, and then the dot picked up speed even more, faster than even a giant could run. The human was in a car.
“He’s-he’s been taken!” Ray exclaimed. “It actually worked! They took the bait!” He sounded surprised. Though he hadn’t admitted it out loud to Joey, he didn’t think the kidnappers would just be hanging around all night waiting for a victim.
Joey jumped out of his chair, grabbing Ray’s sleeve. “Come on, let’s go!”
Ray used his superior bulk to pull Joey back into his chair. “Whoa, hold on there cowboy. We have to see where they’re going first.”
“But-” Joey began to protest.
“Don’t be stupid, Joey,” Ray interrupted, more serious this time. “There’s no point in intercepting them before they reach their hideout. Have patience.”
Joey slumped, resting his elbows on the computer desk, and glued his eyes to the screen. From the direction the car was moving, he assumed they must be going to the wreckage that made up the bad area of town. Suddenly, the little blinking dot disappeared. Joey blinked, wiped his glasses, and gripped the monitor with both hands. The signal had been lost.
“Shit!” Joey cursed. Just then, the dot blinked back to life on the screen. Joey was stunned to see that now there were two dots. One stayed in the car, and the other lay motionless on the side of the road. With the two trackers in the shoes separated, the signal was weaker, each dot flickering with irregular pulses.
“What happened?” Ray asked, confused. “Why are there two dots?”
Joey covered his mouth in horror. “What if... he got torn in half?” He jumped up out of his chair again. “We need to go!”
This time, Ray didn’t protest. He grabbed a nearby officer and plunked him down in front of the screen. “Watch this for us, please. Keep us informed.” Joey and Ray sprinted out to their police cruiser and rushed toward the location of the immobile dot. Joey was scared to see what they would find. He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if the human had been killed because of his harebrained scheme. He imagined having to call up the man’s wife and inform her of her husband’s death, and the thought churned his stomach.
They pinpointed the source of the signal and parked the cruiser close by. Joey didn’t want to accidentally run over the doctor, if he was injured in the street. They got out of the car and searched the asphalt for any sign of him, dead or alive. The closest streetlight was burned out, so Joey swept the area with a flashlight. He spotted a miniscule object near the gutter and crouched down to investigate. He was surprised to find the pair of pants he had the human change into earlier. The pants were crumbled up but intact, without any bloodstains or indications of violence. Joey searched nearby and found a sock, so microscopic that he wouldn’t be able to tell what it was if not for the distinctive shape.
Ray rejoined him, carrying a speck of something in his palm. Joey had to squint to discern it was the doctor’s shoe, with the tracker inside. He was relieved to see there was no foot ripped off inside the shoe or anything grotesque. The shoe was as small as the nail on his pinky finger. The cops glanced at each other with confusion.
“What happened here? Why did he take his clothes off?” Ray questioned. “There’s no blood, so at least they didn’t shred him to pieces. I hope they weren’t doing anything nasty and perverted to him.”
Joey paled. “Do you think they knew about the trackers we planted on his person?”
Ray shook his head. “Doubtful, considering one of the trackers is still in the car. Although…” He looked down at the diminutive shoe, dwarfed by his palm. “Human shoes are so small. Maybe they missed one.”
“If they figured it out, he’s in danger! We need to rescue him!” Joey cried. Ray acknowledged Joey’s concerns with a tense nod and called up the officer he left by the computer back at the station. He asked for an update. As he listened to what the officer had to say, his eyes widened.
“Joey, they traced the other tracker to that abandoned industrial park up the road. However… they lost the signal again. We’ve lost him.” Ray hustled back to the cruiser, Joey on his heels. “We need to find him, stat!” They jumped in the police car and skidded off. As they followed their fellow officer’s directions to the last known location, Joey scanned the surrounding area from the window for anything notable or unusual.
Ray slowed to a stop in the middle of the road. Joey looked at him questioningly. “This is it,” Ray said. “We don’t know where they went from here.” Joey surveyed the area. All he saw were rows of abandoned buildings that were falling apart, old warehouses, ancient industrial equipment eaten away by rust, and dirt lots. No cars in sight. Woe crept into his heart. He had failed.
“Drive up the road a little ways,” Joey suggested, not willing to give up yet. “Maybe we’ll get lucky and find a clue.” Ray piloted the cruiser up the road, to a four-way stop.
“Which way?” Ray asked.
“I…” Joey glanced down each road, then groaned and covered his face with his hands. “I don’t know!” Black despair flooded over him. He was never going to find Eren. Dr. Rajak was going to die. The poor human teenagers would suffer a life of slavery. All because he had ruined the investigation; he hadn’t thought through what might go wrong. He slammed his fists onto the dashboard with frustration. “Damn it!”
“Hold on, Joey,” Ray mentioned, staying more levelheaded. “We need to think. We can figure this out. Put ourselves in the minds of the criminals. If we had a hideout, where would it be?”
Joey tried to puzzle it out, but his mind drew a blank. He was beginning to spiral. He clenched his fists hard enough for his nails to bite into his skin. Just as he felt like screaming, a recent memory surfaced in his mind. They had been in this area just a few days ago. He had seen suspiciously nice cars, hidden in a gravel lot next to a warehouse. He connected the dots.
“Ray!” Joey shouted. “I know where to go!”
Ray grinned. “I knew I could count on you, Joey!” Although the industrial park looked different in the night, they managed to locate the familiar route and find the same warehouse. Just like before, there were several slick, expensive, black cars parked alongside it. Ray parked the cruiser in a discreet spot and Joey made a move to get out. As usual, Ray had to grab his arm and tug him back.
“We need to call for backup,” Ray insisted. “If that is really a gang hideout, it’ll be like storming an armed fortress.” Joey immediately realized the sense in his statement and picked up the radio to call all his cop buddies. Before long, the warehouse was silently encircled by police cars, like sharks drawn to the smell of blood in the water. His co-workers had brought with them a veritable arsenal of gear and equipment for assaulting the building. Joey hoped his hunch was correct; otherwise, his boss might not be too happy with him for wasting resources.
The police converged on the building and covered all the exits. Joey’s adrenaline was coursing through his veins. He had trained for this sort of situation in the police academy, but he had never been involved with storming a building full of hostile enemies in real life. He didn’t have time to dwell on the thought, though, because the signal was given. Joey and Ray pulled the pins on the flashbang grenades they were holding and tossed them through the door, then shut the door and turned away to block out the light and noise.
The police charged into the building, guns raised, to swiftly incapacitate the stunned criminals. Joey ran through the chaos and blindly bull-rushed the first giant he encountered, a hulking brute of a man. Using his momentum and the element of surprise to his advantage, he knocked the man to the ground, pinned his arms behind his back, and cuffed him. Another muscular giant was behind him with a knife drawn, but Ray knocked the man over before he could stab Joey in the back and placed him under arrest.
The police had blindsided the gang, so they were able to successfully and efficiently subdue the dangerous men without any casualties or significant injuries. Joey hauled the bigger giant he had tackled to his feet and dragged him out the door to the police car. The man was fighting against him, cursing and shouting and frothing at the mouth. His voice was familiar, but Joey couldn’t place where he had heard the man talk before. Joey, pushing him forward from the back, looked over his fancy pinstripe suit and realized he must be someone important. He caught a glimpse of the giant’s face and felt a jolt of shock.
“Principal Greenwood?!” Joey balked. Mr. Greenwood stopped yelling and scowled at Joey. He didn’t know Joey, but he figured he must have been a student at the school. Joey boiled over with rage. Mr. Greenwood had harmed his girlfriend while at the school, and now he was here, linked to her disappearance. He tightened his grip on the cuffs until his knuckles whitened and slammed Mr. Greenwood against the car. He wanted to beat this man to a bloody pulp.
“Joey, buddy, don’t do anything you’ll regret,” Ray warned as he dragged his own prisoner next to Joey. “It’s not worth compromising the investigation.” Joey gritted his teeth and nodded, indicating he understood. The officers recited to the detained criminals their rights and locked them up in the backseat of their police cruiser. Once that business was taken care of, Joey rushed back inside to see if he could find Eren.
When he entered the warehouse, he saw that several of his coworkers had already begun the process of securing the drugs, weapons, and other contraband. One of the officers came up and slapped Joey on the back. “Good job, man! This was an excellent find!” Joey didn’t say anything in response, as he was too distracted and not receptive to praise at the moment. He looked around until he spotted the human cages and hurried over. He prayed desperately that he would find Eren.
One of the giant police officers was already systematically unlocking the occupied cages to free the humans. All the humans had been stripped naked, clothed only with the wretched slave harnesses. Joey helped remove the harnesses, peering closely at the humans and inside each cage for his girlfriend. Dr. Rajak had been freed before Joey arrived by the cages. He looked shaken and didn’t talk much. Joey thanked him profusely for his help; he gave a weak nod in response and requested he be taken back home to his wife. Joey called somebody over to help him out and give him a ride home.
While all of the humans were suffering from their terrible experience, some of them were clearly not used to giants. They were terrified of all giants, even the police officers who were trying to help them. Joey could only assume they had been taken from the human side of the wall and had no prior experience with giants. The idea that they were sold by their own people to horrible giants filled Joey with sadness. Joey wanted to help them, but he recalled how he had caused the human at the hospital to faint and held himself back. Fortunately, the humans who knew that not all giants were bad worked to coax out the others and make them more comfortable.
Joey had to turn away with bitterness when he finally accepted the fact that Eren was not among them. He was too late, assuming she had been here with the others. He cursed himself angrily. He saw the warehouse a few days ago and had his suspicions, but didn’t act in time. He might have been able to save her. He left the warehouse, oblivious to his surroundings as he stumbled back to the police cruiser and leaned on it numbly. Ray joined him a few minutes later.
“Joey… is everything okay? Did you find her?” his partner asked.
Joey burst into tears.

For the birthday requests could I please have whichever of the following stirs your imagination. Stucky with prompt number 86. Sebastian Stan at a party with prompt number 11. Andy Barber (in court or at the office) with prompt number 20 or Lee Bodecker maybe after a hard work day with prompt number 39.
So I went just a tad dark on this 😅😅 oh well! I hope you enjoy!
Tumblr media
Okay, so maybe Lee had a bad day at work
Like maybe he had to change shirts because he spilled the coffee you made for him all over his freshly pressed button-down, making him late to the station. Then the new rookie misplaced some evidence from a big case, so he had to push back important paperwork to deal with that. Then he got socked in the nose trying to break apart a brawl down at the diner, leaving him with a nasty bruise that hurt like a mother —
And now he had to bring home the paperwork he didn't get to finish. He already stayed late trying to finish that damn paperwork.
Lee slammed the car door as he got out of the cruiser, cursing as he pulled the front door shut behind him, the slam resonating throughout the house. It was one of the nicer houses in Meade; more recently built and newer appliances with a nice backyard for kids.
Lee's been trying to knock you up since your wedding night, becoming more and more disappointed when you'd start bleeding the next month. It was just another reason he was so agitated. After all, it's been nearly four months since the wedding.
He heard your Mary Jane's clacking softly against the linoleum as you came into view. The thing about you is that when you're frowning, you don't frown. Ladies don't frown, your mother always told you. Instead, your eyes get wide with an innocent expression, like you're trying to keep an open mind on the situation. it's the look you have now, as Lee stepped further into the kitchen.
"You're home late," you'd say, maybe crossing your arms over your chest.
Lee let out an exasperated sigh, shrugging off his leather jacket. "Got stuck with some paperwork from the county jail, Johnson screwed up some evidence. Ya got dinner ready?"
You nodded. "There's a pot roast on the stove. I made potatoes, too."
Lee wasn't head-over-heels your attitude, your quiet voice and short responses. He supposed it was warranted, though, as much as he disliked it; when he called to tell you he'd be home late he didn't say it'd be dark by the time he got home.
He sat down at the kitchen table and opened the manila folder he had brought home from the station, sighing as he clicked his pen open.
"Aye, darlin'!" he called out to you. "Mind grabbing me a beer?"
Your voice was quiet as it echoed through the kitchen. "We don't have any."
Lee nearly snapped the pen between his fingers.
"What didya say?" he asked, thinking he misheard you.
"I said we don't have any."
Lee stood abruptly, the chair scraping against the hardwood. He marched into the kitchen, yanking the refrigerator door open.
"I thought ya went to the store," Lee growled through gritted teeth.
"I—I guess I forgot," you answered, your voice timid. Lee slammed the refrigerator shut, making you jump.
"You forgot?"
He was on you before you could blink, his hand tight around your throat as he pulled you close to him. Your small hands went to his wrist, trying to pull him off you. "I asked ya to do one thing: Get groceries. You get beer every week, yeah? What was so different about this week?"
"I—I don't know, I'm sorry—"
Lee squeezed your throat in warning, effectively shutting you up. "You know how hard I work to provide fer ya? To provide fer us? All I ask is you do as I say, why's that so hard, huh?"
"Please, Lee," you whimpered. "I—I'll go get you some beer, okay? I'll go and—" Lee tightened his grip around your throat, cutting you off.
"You think I'm gonna let you go out at this time a'night?" Lee snarled, his grip only getting tighter.
"Y—you're right, I—I'm sorry—"
"I am so sick of your voice. Why don't you shut up and put your mouth to better use?"
His words stung, but you knew better than to argue when he got like this. When Lee released your throat you sucked in a shaky breath, looking up at Lee with watery eyes.
"I won't tell ya again. Be a good girl now."
You got down on your knees, your hands trembling as you struggled to undo the zipper on Lee's trousers. You saw his hand move out of the corner of your eye and you flinched, a tear slipping past your lashes.
"I'm trying," you choked out. "It—it won't — I'm sorry, I'm trying —"
He gently batted your hand away, easily undoing his belt and fly, shuffling the trousers down his thighs. You let out a small sigh, looking up at him in thanks. Lee glared down at you, nodding to the hard-on that tented his underwear. You were quick to pull the undergarment away, his hard-on standing eagerly against his soft stomach. Your manicured hand wrapped around the base of his cock, the bulbous head red and throbbing. Your tongue darted out to lick your lower lip in anticipation and you looked up at Lee again. He only raised his eyebrows expectantly.
"You just gonna sit there?" Lee questioned.
You flinched at his tone, pressing a quick kiss to the base of his cock. As you pressed your tongue against his velvety flesh, you heard Lee let out a hiss. You dragged your tongue against the underside of his cock, whimpering when the Sheriff's fingers tangled themselves into your hair, ruining its styled appearance. You swirled your tongue around his head, feeling the muscle twitch against your tongue. His grip on your hair tightened.
"Quit yer teasin'," Lee growled.
You nodded softly, swallowing your nerves. You took him into your mouth, your jaw aching as your lips stretched to accommodate the girth of him. Lee let a shaky exhale as you took him further into your mouth, the tip of his cock grazing the back of your throat.
You should have known better, you though to yourself as you struggled to breathe through your nose. You didn't forget to buy the beer, you purposefully left it out of your shopping cart. You wanted Lee to quit drinking; you didn't think he'd get so upset over it. If the two of you were ever going to start a family, your children needed someone they could look up to as a father. He knew that better than anyone.
Lee pushed his cock deeper down your throat; your hands flew to his thighs and you dug your nails into his skin, gulping in panic. You retched, trying to pull away.
"Breathe through yer nose, darlin'," Lee husked. "Don't ferget to breathe."
You always forgot to breathe. You whimpered and nodded as best you could, focusing on inhaling and exhaling through your nose.
You bobbed your head up and down his length, your rhythm keeping time with your erratic heart heat. Lee groaned and ran his fingers along your scalp, caressing you gingerly and you moaned as the sloppy sounds filled your ears.
"Atta girl," Lee moaned. "Fuck."
You knew Lee was close when you felt him twitch against your tongue. He was guiding your movements, his hands gripping your hair tightly.
“Ah, fuck, baby,” Lee cursed, his fingers tightening on your hair. You groaned, the vibrations reverberating through his cock.
“Yer gonna swallow,” Lee growled, “take all that I give ya.”
Lee shuddered, gasping as he pushed himself down your throat, your nose brushing against his pelvis. Lee came down your thrust and you struggled to swallow all of his seed, coughing and sputtering around his cock.
He only pulled out when you were swatting at Lee’s thighs, struggling to breathe. You gasped, a shudder dancing down your spine as Lee smiled cynically down at you.
“We ain’t done yet, darlin’. Get yer ass up here.”

1-Memory of Settling the Score; Scene 2
The Muzzle of Nemesis, pages 18-39
--Men in military uniform stood around me in a line in the meeting room.
One of them was pointing to a spot on the map that was spread out on top of the table, and explaining something to me.
“—The southern front has already been broken by USE forces. Rolled has been taken from us, and they are currently marching for Lucifenian. At this rate, it’s only a matter of time before they retake the Republic of Lucifenia. We’ve managed to hold back the Marlon cruisers to the west with our naval unit, but the situation hasn’t been favorable--”
Why was he saying such things to me?
What—was this man’s name?
…Areus...Yes, he is…General Areus Hymn.
My blurred consciousness gradually began to clear.
And that’s…Gigaty...Polrio...And that man with the glasses is Grand...
I confirmed the names of each of the officers lined up before me inside my head.
Mima...Encheri...Yes, they’re all—my subordinates. My colleagues in the great Tasan Party.
General Areus didn’t look so good as he gave his report.
His expression, more than his words, told of our poor military situation.
“—Our allies have been slow to act. Beelzenia has their hands full with defending themselves, and Jakoku…They’re still suffering from the ‘unfortunate accident’ the other day. We have reports that they’re already preparing a complete surrender to the USE army.”
And there, General Areus stopped moving his mouth.
He seemed to be waiting for me to give some sort of response to his report.
It was the same with the others. There was sweat on his brow, and he remained standing at attention.
Would we surrender?
Or would we continue the war?
They were waiting for my words.
--The words of Elphegort’s führer, Nemesis Sudou.
.
I had been sitting in a chair, and it was there that I stood.
I could tell clearly that everyone was breathless with anticipation.
“…There’s no problem.”
I’m positive that I was smiling.
How could I be smiling in the midst of such a crisis?—That bewilderment showed quite obviously on the officers’ faces.
It wasn’t that I was bluffing.
It was as I had just said—there was no problem.
“Everyone, come with me.”
I approached a bookcase that was deeper in the conference room, and pushed a key that I had on my person into a keyhole on the underside of the shelf.
The bookcase slid to the side, and opened up a doorway to a hidden room.
.
There were various kinds of devices in this room.
There weren’t many who knew what they were for even among the top officers of the Tasan Party.
The first one to speak up was General Areus.
“So you’ve…already made preparations.”
“Correct. We need only activate it now, and everything will be over.” I put my hand on the firing mechanism, and once more flashed a smile. “This bastard child of the gods who will lead us to victory—‘Punishment’.”
It was a new weapon developed by Elphegort’s proud researchers. Its aim was already on the entirety of Evillious.
The two firing tests we had done for it had produced results beyond expectation. The first “Punishment” had completely burned down the Millennium Tree Forest to Elphegort’s south, and the second firing had transformed Jakoku’s Onigashima to a land of ash—To tell the truth, that one had been a miscalculation; by all rights it was supposed to land on an open field on the western edge of the United States of Maistia—we had finished correcting for that configuration error.
“But…Führer.” General Areus’s expression was still stiff, even as he looked upon the firing mechanism. “Do you really intend to use this?”
“Do you have some objection?”
“I have two worries. First—‘Punishment’’s destructive power vastly outstrips any weapon that already exists. No matter where it lands, we won’t be able to avoid having many civilian casualties. The other concern is that there are instabilities in its accuracy from rushing its development. There’s a chance that it may go off course and cause damage to our own country—”
“Our scientists are working to ensure that doesn’t happen. We won’t have another failure like with Jakoku.”
“But—”
General Areus didn’t withdraw. Apparently there were others who shared his thinking among the other officers.
It seemed I would have to first correct their misconception.
“General. I have no actual intention of firing ‘Punishment’ right away. This is—a deterrent.”
“…”
“Word has already spread to other countries of the situation in Onigashima. But the USE forces don’t yet know that we still have several ‘Punishments’ available. It is for that reason they are making such a cocksure advance. They believe that we have no more options available to us. …Once our enemy learns we have yet more ‘Punishments’, and that they are aimed at every country—there will be room for negotiation.”
“…I see.”
“Gentlemen, this next part is your job. Armed with the authority of ‘Punishment’, make the USE army withdraw from our nations!”
“Yes!”
Starting with General Areus, all the officers present saluted me.
“Now go! For Tasan Elphegort!”
“Long live Führer Sudou!”
.
--After the meeting had ended, I took a brief rest in my quarters.
Generally it wasn’t a good idea to stand by the window. There was always the chance of being targeted by an enemy sniper.
Go ahead and kill me, if you can.
I began to gaze at the scenery outside without much hesitation. The windows on the opposite building, its roof, among the branches of the roadside trees—there was no silhouette of an assassin anywhere.
Despite the whole world being at war, it was quiet around Tasan headquarters. I could see an aging woman walking the path, pulling along a cart with a large barrel inside.
I returned my gaze to the inside of my room. I didn’t much care for excessive decoration. As long as I had the bare minimum of what I needed, that was enough for me.
Here there was only a desk, a chair, a bed for napping, several medals and photos pinned up on the wall, and—one large water tank.
At the bottom of the water tank a Ziz Tiama—a blue octopus—was sleeping soundly. Most of the time when visitors first came here, they would seem put off by the octopus. Frankly speaking, perhaps they were more put off by me, for keeping such a thing in my room.
This octopus was one that my mother had given me soon after I was born. I had given him the nickname of “Mr. Ziz”, and doted upon him. We had been together for over thirty years now. He was my oldest friend, and you could say we shared a common destiny.
As long as Mr. Ziz was alive, I would not die—Whenever I told anyone that, they would laugh, thinking I was joking.
There was only one person who took me seriously, without laughing.
--I’m sure that if he were still alive, my life would have taken a very different turn. I wouldn’t be in the position to rule a country like this—I would be living as one woman, as a wife…
What a foolish fantasy.
There’s nothing gained by looking back to the past, and I had no regrets about who I was now.
I had to save the world.
This world filled with this “anger”.
…Even if I wasn’t the right person to do that.
I couldn’t go back now.
.
I realized there was some commotion going on outside, and once more returned to the window.
The guards were quarreling with someone out by the main gate.
When I looked closer, I saw that it was the same woman who had been pulling the cart before.
“—I’m telling you, I was told to bring this food in here!”
“We haven’t heard anything about that. And this place is closed to the public to begin with.”
“That’s none of my concern! If I don’t finish my work, I won’t get paid! Just let me through!”
It seemed the soldiers weren’t able to run the woman off very well, stupefied at her threatening attitude.
There was a knock on the door, and Colonel Polrio immediately entered. He had several documents in hand.
Before he could speak, I cut in with, “There’s a ruckus going on outside.”
“…I beg your pardon. It looks like some peasant woman trying to push her wares. –Would you like me to give the order to have her shot?”
“She may be a peasant, but we can’t afford to have you harming a citizen of Elphegort without cause. Have her leave politely…If they can’t even do that, then Tasan Elphegort’s soldiers must not be worth much.”
“—Of course. I will do as you ask.”
Colonel Polrio hurriedly left the room, leaving the documents on my desk.
--The populace was suffering from this prolonged war. We had a serious shortage of goods. And we couldn’t rely on aid from our allies.
And here to break this stalemate—
…Is, I suppose, ‘Punishment’.
I had told everyone earlier that I had no intention of using it right away.
Of course, there’s nothing I would prefer more than for all of this to be resolved without anyone being sacrificed.
But…the other me whispered in my heart.
.
“Everything must be purified.”
.
This brutal personality that slept within me. It had tormented me since I was a child.
I’d become mostly able to shut her out since becoming an adult, but--
It felt as though her voice was growing stronger lately.
.
The ruckus was still ongoing outside.
“That’s enough of your nonsense!”
I could hear the soldiers shouting. When I looked out the window they were aiming the machine guns that they carried at the woman.
And in no time at all, several gunshots rang out.
The woman didn’t seem to have been shot. Rather, I could see some faint sand clouds from the ground near her, apparently from warning shots.
“If you don’t want to get shot, leave now!”
Perhaps frightened by the soldiers’ threat, she turned around and then slowly started walking towards her cart.
What a waste of bullets.
I would have to punish them for that later with a pay cut.
Once the woman reached the cart, she didn’t immediately set out.
She put her hand on a cord tying down a sheet on top of the barrel there.
--I suddenly got a bad feeling.
Despite having just been threatened with a gun, the woman’s face bore a calm smile.
She unfastened the cord, and swiftly yanked off the sheet.
What immediately broke through the lid of the barrel and leaped out was—
…A—tiger!?
The guardsmen looked even more surprised than I was. Taking advantage of their immediate inaction, the tiger quickly pounced upon one of the soldiers.
“Aaaaugh!”
By the time the reserve guards had rushed out of the main building, hearing the screams, the tiger had already ripped the man’s throat out.
--At some point the woman had vanished from her place by the cart.
Everyone started to fire at the tiger all at once.
But the tiger ran to escape the rain of bullets, disappearing behind the building on the other side of the road.
“Catch it!”
Complying with their commanders’ order, all the guards headed in the direction the tiger had fled.
They went behind the building, and just as they were out of sight—
Again, the sound of gunshots rang out.
Just now…That didn’t sound like our military guns.
Immediately, a fewer number of soldiers came running back. They then hid behind the perimeter wall of the headquarters, and took up firing stances.
The troop leader blew the whistle to call in reinforcements.
“We’re under attack!”
At the same time, I could hear more firing from the enemy soldiers on the other side.
I immediately pulled away from the window and hid myself in a spot that couldn’t be seen from the outside.
And then I recalled a certain name to mind.
That tiger…I wonder if it’s Feng Li. A ghost of PN.
Then that woman was probably—a disguised Hel Jaakko.
Colonel Polrio sprinted into the room, accompanied by two subordinates.
“We’re under attack!”
“I know that! By who and how many?”
“Judging by their uniforms they’re likely from the United States of Maistia! As for how many…As far as we can tell at present, maybe ten-odd soldiers.”
“Maistia…Quite a feat, coming all the way here from across the ocean.”
It must have been an infiltration unit that came to Elphegort masquerading as peasants.
Still…How reckless. There’s no way these headquarters will fall to such a small number of people.
I heard the sound of my room’s windows violently shattering from enemy fire. Colonel Polrio let out a small wail and hid under my desk.
“Führer, this is too dangerous! We must move to the war council room!”
“That would be wise.”
I started to head for the doorway, crouching down.
“…Colonel Polrio.”
“Yes?”
“Take my water tank to the war council room.”
“Huh? But I can’t do that by myse—”
“What are those men cowering at your side here for?”
Even amid all this chaos, Mr. Ziz was peacefully drifting around in his tank, showing no sign of waking up.
What a carefree creature.
.
While we waited for the battle to end inside the war council room, I pondered on the true identity of our foes.
Why are former PN members with Maistia troops?
There was a justice organization known as the Dark Star Bureau in northern Levianta. This bureau had once created its own personal peace-keeping force separate from the police.
That was “Police Neutrality”—nicknamed “PN”.
After Levianta had broken out into civil war on account of Dark Star Bureau Director Gallerian Marlon’s excesses, PN was disbanded.
The whereabouts of its former members varied. Some were imprisoned, some were recruited into the World Police, some went to spend the rest of their years in their homelands—
I had once worked in PN myself.
…Though I was never an official member. On the surface, PN had the purpose of performing peacekeeping activities in each country as an alternative to the corrupt police, but behind the scenes it also carried out secret assassination jobs against any who would threaten the Dark Star Bureau—or rather, anyone who got in Gallerian’s way.
I had been entrusted with carrying out such “behind the scenes” tasks.
Feng Li, Hel Jaakko…They had been part of PN’s “public” face. For that reason, while I had heard of them, today was my first time ever laying eyes on them.
Perhaps I didn’t need to think too deeply about it. A great deal of time had passed since PN was disbanded. There was nothing particularly odd about anywhere its members ended up working.
--I was more proof of that than anyone.
Who could have imagined that little old Nemesis would be standing at the top of Elphegort? Me, who had once done nothing but make trouble with my friends in the slums of Aceid?
“…It’s quiet.”
At some point the sound of gunshots had faded away.
“Perhaps they’ve finished suppressing our foes,” Colonel Polrio suggested.
About ten party officers including myself were assembled in the council room, the safest place in headquarters.
“…Where is Major Encheri?”
It was then that I finally realized one of the officers was absent.
“Gone, now that you mention it. …Maybe he grabbed a gun and went out to join the fight. He’s quite the daring man, ha ha ha.”
I would have really preferred if General Areus had been joking. “I told him to think of his age and position. It’s not a commander’s job to be standing on the front lines.”
“True, he’ll be in for a scolding when he gets back.”
Suddenly, the door opened.
The man standing there was the very subject of discussion, Major Encheri. Everyone in the room turned their gaze to him at once.
I noticed immediately that he had sweat pouring from his temples. Perhaps he was uncomfortable with having been so late…That’s what I thought for a moment.
No…it’s not that.
General Areus seemed to notice something off about Major Encheri as well when he tried to approach him.
“You—”
But before General Areus could speak to him, Major Encheri pitched forward.
Thrust deep into his back—was a wide knife.
“--!?”
Everyone grasped the situation, and moved to hide behind the desk, drawing their guns.
However…our foe’s movements were just a little bit quicker.
The muzzle of a gun flashed from the other side of the doorway—several people were shot by the bullets flying from it.
“Gah!”
I peered at the fallen from the shadow of the desk.
They got…Gigaty and Grand. General Areus is…just barely alive.
He was lying on the spot, moaning in pain from a shot to his left leg.
Someone then stomped on his wounded leg.
“Haugh!”
Ignoring General Areus’ pitiable cries, the intruders drew closer to me and the others.
“Drop your guns and stand up with your hands in the air!” the man who appeared to be the leader shouted at where we were hidden.
Naturally, we had no intention of obeying his words.
I stood, and showed myself to our enemy—my gun at the ready.
At that signal, the others also stood and pointed their guns at the intruders.
There were less of them than I’d thought.
Only three.
They all hid their faces with cloth and goggles.
We’ve got seven people left. We’ve got superior numbers, but…
There was a clear difference in equipment between us and our foes.
All of the Tasan officers were wielding pistols for personal protection. By contrast, they were equipped with fully automatic rifles. And the vests they were wearing were, without a doubt, bulletproof.
Even if we exchange fire…they’d be the ones left in the end.
Their leader likely realized that.
He aimed the gun at me and declared, showing no sign of fear, “I’ll say it again. Drop your guns. If not, I’ll shoot Führer Sudou first.”
The officers all looked conflicted, but when Colonel Polrio threw down his gun in defeat, the others followed suit one by one.
And so—I was the only one among my allies who was still wielding a gun.
“You don’t know when to give up, do you Führer? Even you must see you have no hope of winning.”
The leader continued to aim his gun at me, the other two watching the captured officers menacingly.
“No.”
And yet, I had no intention of obeying him.
“I see, then you leave me no choice—you will die here, Nemesis.”
The man pulled the trigger without hesitation.
.
--But the bullet never actually left his machine gun.
What happened instead was an “unfortunate accident”
“Guuh…”
The man fell into a crouch, clutching his now blood-covered hand.
He couldn’t have imagined it.
--That his gun would explode the moment he pulled the trigger.
“Guess you weren’t so lucky, heh heh…” I smiled sardonically, but of course this…was not simple “bad luck”.
“Sir!”
One of his allies raced to him, and then pointed their machine gun at me.
“Oh, are you going to shoot next? Go ahead, try it. However…you’d better hope there’s not another ‘accident’.”
He moved to shoot me, angered by my provocation, but the leader stopped him.
“Don’t do it! This woman…did something to the gun.”
The leader took the gun from his comrade and carefully checked it with shaking hands.
“…As I thought. Something’s clinging to the inside of the bolt…Is this…ice?” Finally the man tossed the gun aside, and then glared at me through his goggles. “—You damned witch.”
“My my, don’t use such an anachronistic word. ‘Witches’—their existence was thoroughly debunked by the Dark Star Bureau long ago, you know.”
“…I know. I too was once a member of ‘PN’, after all.”
My heart faintly stirred at hearing that.
I once more looked at his wound.
That bloodied hand…the color of his skin…He was black.
This man…he can’t be…
While holding my gun in one hand, I walked closer to him.
His other comrade kept their machine gun trained on me, but there was no need to fear. Even if they fired, they would meet the same outcome as their leader.
I put my hand on his goggles and ripped them off.
Then I tore away the cloth covering him, and there—
Was a face I knew.
“—So, Bruno Zero…It is you.”
The unsavory organization, PN.
He had been its leader.
“It’s been a while, Nemesis.”
“…You’ve gotten old, Bruno.”
This was a reunion decades apart, but neither of us were smiling.
“Why are you with the Maistian army—Or rather, why are you attacking this place?”
“Do you really need to ask me that? I would think it’s obvious I came to kill you, the enemy of the United States of Maistia…the führer of Tasan Elphegort.”
“If that’s the case why didn’t you shoot me right away? You tried to get me to surrender at first.”
Bruno didn’t reply.
He simply continued to glare at me, silently.
Getting a hold on the situation, Colonel Polrio scooped up his gun and approached my side.
“Is this an acquaintance of yours, Führer?”
“Acquaintance…Yeah. You could say this man—Bruno, is the one to whom I owe my life.”
“My word, then—”
“Search him. You might find something.”
Colonel Polrio quickly seized Bruno, and then began to search his pockets.
As he did, the other officers grabbed Bruno’s comrades and called for reinforcements.
--It was apparent that the combatants who had attacked the main gate at the start were merely a diversion. Then a different unit comprised of Bruno and his allies snuck in while the guards were distracted and reach the council room…That was the gist of it.
“Führer. I found this—” Colonel Polrio handed me a sheet of paper once he had finished searching Bruno. “It looks like orders. It’s been written in code so I don’t know what it says…Shall I have it deciphered?”
“No need.”
I recognized that code.
“Using the same code that you did back in PN—You’ve gone senile, Bruno.”
Its contents…were details on the new weapon that we possessed, “Punishment”.
And also the order to destroy it.
So the information’s been leaked. But I only revealed the existence of the completed “Punishment” to the officers for the first time in the meeting earlier. So then—there’s a chance we have a spy amidst our military scientists.
I would have to look into that later.
First—I needed to decide on what to do with Bruno.
I drew closer to him, and put the muzzle of the pistol in my hand in the middle of his brow.
“Do you remember this gun, Bruno?”
“…Your ‘Naga Custom 44”.
“Yes…The revolver that ‘Postman’ gave me that day. The name of the sender was…’MASTER’.”
“…”
“If it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t be here now. The person who saved me when I was charged for the crime of sinking the S.S. Titanis and sentenced to be executed—was you.”
“…I regret doing it. You should have died back then.”
Even so, he had saved my life.
Because I—was the daughter of someone he loved.
I lowered the gun, and brought my face closer to look him right in the eyes.
“I will say it once more. I owe you my life. You saved me. And—you are the one who made me into what I am now.”
“So…You’re going to save me now? Is that what you’re about to say?”
I smiled at him.
“Oh no. It’s for that very reason—I’m going to kill you.”
I once more put the muzzle against his brow, and quickly pulled the trigger.
And as the blood splash washed over my face, I felt satisfied down to my very core.

I Want The Headline (Pt. 49)

Jeon was heaving in breaths as he shoved his way through the double doors. You flinched, furiously rubbing your eyes to try to appear normal. He didn’t spare you a glance or speak. Gaze darting across his face as you tried to discern exactly what emotion he was working through your shoulders tensed, his expression gave away nothing.
Your first thought was to ask him what was wrong, but then his eyes were on you and whatever you had planned to say was swallowed back. There was a slight delay as he narrowed his eyes at your puffy face, but he subtly shook his head, gaze cutting to the door. Wordlessly, he stalked to the front door, calling for Captain Jeon to cut his chit-chat with the desk guard short. The captain had raised a brow at his younger brother’s gruff voice, soft eyes looking to you but you only shrugged sadly. There was really nothing you could do about Jungkook’s behavior. It seemed he was still ignoring you.
The two of you followed after him, a bit apprehensive of the way he paced around the cruiser, hands shoved deep in his jean pockets. Pausing every few seconds to check to see how close you and Captain Jeon were, Jungkook frequently sent over impatient looks. The keys to the car jingled as Captain Jeon pulled them out of his pocket and pressed down on the unlock button. Immediately, Jungkook was pulling open the shotgun door sliding into his seat and impatiently tapping his foot on the rubber foot mats. You blinked.
He was that upset with you?
You hadn’t noticed that Captain Jeon had slid into the driver’s seat and turned on the car until they were both looking at you; Jungkook with a flat stare and the captain with a curious look. For a while you just stared back, unsure of what to do. Jungkook was questioning why he was even with you, Yoongi was in jail (his threat looming over your head). All the people who had held you captive were gone. Weren’t you technically free now? You could go home or anywhere you wanted. No one was holding you back, right?
You were free.
So why did you still feel trapped?
A footstep was taken towards the cruiser, your shoulders squaring as you moved towards it. Yoongi probably wouldn’t be in prison forever. He’d get out and he’d be looking for you. Jungkook would finally decide what he felt for you and then he’d choose whether or not he wanted to pursue you any longer. But for now, he was unsure and he had no feelings towards you.
So you were free.
No one was holding you captive or pressuring you into making decisions. No one wanted to be around you or to hear what you had to say.
Jungkook’s brows furrowed as you walked in front of the cruiser, the profile of your face void of any expression. He cautiously eyed you, waiting for you to turn and get into the seat behind the driver’s side, but you kept walking.
And then you were running across the parking lot towards the city streets.
And he was scrambling to get out and go after you.
He wasn’t sure why the sight of you running off had shocked him so much, but once you had taken off he was desperate to get out of the car. Captain Jeon had managed to get out before him, his hair flopping as he sprinted across the lot after you. Jungkook shouted curses, fingers fumbling with the seatbelt as he jabbed his thumb at the button until it clicked open. When his hands jerked at the car door it didn’t budge. His first thought was to pull harder, but the door remained firmly shut. “Jeon, you piece of shit!” He screamed, angrily kicking at the door. When had the cop put a safety lock on this door?
Crawling across the seats, Jungkook opened the driver’s door, falling out onto the asphalt. He was quick to get on his feet, taking off where he had seen you and Captain Jeon go. You were running away from him again and his immediate reaction was to go after you.
He had gotten the main street when he stopped, frustration building up within his chest as he watched cars drive, people walk by and no sign of you or Captain Jeon. Jungkook held his hands up to his head, looking around for any sign of you both. It was just a normal cityscape in broad daylight. Couples walked hand in hand, school kids skipped down the streets and shop owner politely beckoned potential customers into their shoppes. It was busy, but peacful. Nothing like the damp warehouses, dark alley, and shadowed streets he was used to being in. The sun was bright, people were happy and Jungkook was lost. You probably fit in perfectly in this scenery.
Maybe it was better this way? For you to just run off and for him to have no clue of where you went. Tae had told him to decide who his real family was, and now you were gone.
Maybe this was for the best.
“Y/N!” Captain Jeon easily caught up to you, but for whatever reason had just ran right behind you, not trying to stop you from running. “Where are you going, Y/N?” He asked, skidding to a stop when you suddenly halted.
“I don’t know!” You doubled over, hands pressed onto your knees. Entire body aching, you coughed between gasps of breath, “I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I just..I just want- I don’t know what I want.” He reached down, helping you stand upright. You tensed at the feel of his warm hands rubbing at your shoulders, trying to soothe you. Feeling you apprehension, he released you, running a hair through his messy hair. A few people looked over you way, curious as to why an officer was chasing down a woman, but none lingered too long. Sucking in a breath, you took a step away from Captain Jeon. He moved towards you, gently holding out his hand out to you.
“Why did you start running?”
You ignored it, running your hand through your hair. “I thought about it and..I just realized I’m free.”
He frowned deeply, brows knitted together tightly. You and Jungkook were just going through a rough patch, right? Why were you words to heavy like free? He narrowed his eyes, body tensing in apprehension. “Free from what?”
“From them. Namjoon, Yoongi, Jungkook, the mafia. They’re in prison or in Jeon’s case, he doesn’t seem to care. They can’t force me to stay any more.”
His jaw dropped,“Force you to stay? You were forced?” Captain Jeon had thought you and Jungkook were together mutually; even with this rough upbringing he never would have thought that his brother would hold you against your will. He whirled around, sharp gaze scanning the streets behind you both to look for Jungkook. If Jungkook thought his older brother was going to remain passive in the background after learning this, he was sorely mistaken.
With no sign of Jungkook, Captain Jeon turned back to you,“I had no idea they were forcing you, I thought you were there because you wanted to be with Jungkook.” He pointed over your shoulder,“There’s a little pastry shoppe a few blocks down, go there and I’ll do something with Jungkook. Then I’ll meet you there and we’ll figure out somewhere safe for you to stay until you decided what you want to do from now on, alright?”
He was going to help you get away.
Everything seemed to move slowly as the realization sunk in. You were going to go back to your old life. You’d be able to properly mourn your brothers and eventually go back to school, finish your degree and do everything you wanted to do in life. Memories of Jungkook’s warm embrace and Yoongi’s delicate hold unwilling drifted to the forefront of your mind. You bit your lip, harshly reminding yourself that they didn’t really care about you.
They didn’t love you.
You took a step in the direction he pointed to, heart fluttering. You really were free. Captain Jeon smiled softly at the way your steps seemed to be lighter. He had had his suspicions as to why you were with the mafia, but had doubted them when he saw how adamant Jungkook was about keeping you safe and how you had fallen into him. He waited until you had disappeared around a corner before turning back to the prison.
Now all that was left to take care of was his younger brother.
Jungkook turned away from the street, idly standing by the brushy margin that separated the sidewalk from the prison parking lot. Blocked from most of the harsh sunlight glistening off the edges of buildings by the shady trees behind him, Jungkook stared at his phone in his hands. His first thought had been to call his father and arrange to have Namjoon, Tae and the other organization members freed, but in the end he just ended up staring at the dial pad. Freeing them meant losing you for good and he wasn’t ready to just let you go. He had worked so hard to keep you. He unlocked the device, tapping open the calendar app and flicking through the months. Thumb freezing, Jungkook frowned at the screen.
6 months.
He had known you for six months. It hadn’t even felt that long, maybe 3 max. But no, Jungkook and you had known each other for 6 months. Spring was rolling in now, but he only remembered being close to you when the weather was colder.
Winter.
He had had you for the winter.
Before then, when the weather was warmer, you were a toss up between him and Yoongi and there was the month you had been trapped in that room with Yoongi. But for the winter, you had been with him. He had known exactly why he was with you and why he wanted to stay there. Everything about him and you was clear during the hazy months of winter.
And now spring was making its way in and you and he were heading separate ways again. He didn’t know why he was with you and you didn’t want to stay by him any longer. The beautiful relationship you both had cultivated and kept alive during the cold, snowy months was dying while everything around you both was growing again with new life.
He laughed bitterly to himself. You and him had been together during the worst time of the year. Jungkook had never liked the wintertime, it was too quiet, too cold, too depressingly gray. Winter was when he really questioned himself and how long he was going to devote himself to people who would turn on him at any given moment. He abhorred the winter months.
But this winter had been the best of his life.
He had never really liked winter but,
“I wish it was winter again.”

The issue of nuclear ship visits became significant for New Zealanders in the 1980s. Between 1978 and 1983, opposition to nuclear-armed vessels visiting NZ rose from 32% to 72%. Widespread protests greeted the arrival of the nuclear-powered cruiser USS Texas (CGN-39) in Auckland in August 1983. These protesters on Mercer Street, Wellington, wore grotesque masks and carried a papier-mâché Statue of Liberty wielding a nuclear missile.
The Muldoon-led National government saw these visits as expressing New Zealand’s support for ANZUS and the country’s relationship with the United States.
Nuclear ship visits became an election issue in 1984 and David Lange’s Labour government.
Tumblr media
In late 1984, the US requested the ageing destroyer USS Buchanan (DDG-14) visit NZ. It was not armed with nuclear missiles, though it was with nuclear depth bombs. It seemed the hope was that, since she wasn't armed with nuclear missiles, it would be enough to slip under the political radar.
Nuclear ship visits became an election issue in 1984 and David Lange’s Labour government had won -- and on 4 February, 1985, the NZ government refused to allow Buchanan's entry. DC severed intelligence and military ties with NZ in response, and the USA stopped maintaining its security guarantee to NZ. It took until 2011 for the RNZN to be allowed into USN ports again, and to reinstate the New Zealand part of the ANZUS agreement.
The USN was invited to the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s creation, back in November, 2016. They sent a ship, one without nuclear weaponry -- USS Sampson (DDG-102). It was expected that there would be protests when she arrived, and as a matter of act, there almost were.
But just hours before she sailed into Auckland harbour, the earthquakes that rocked New Zealand and cut off Kaikoura hit. Immediately, Sampson was asked to help the RNZN, and within minutes she was sailing straight back out. America’s first visit in thirty-three years ended up being a humanitarian mission. Along with Sampson was the RNZN’s own Te Kaha, Canterbury, Wellington, and Endeavour, Australia’s HMAS Darwin, and Canada’s HMCS Vancouver.
Tumblr media
Fun fact about Sampson: she is one of the destroyers sunk during the movie Battleship (2012).

Battle of Surigao Strait: Veterans recall horrors of World War II
#PHnews: Battle of Surigao Strait: Veterans recall horrors of World War II
REVISITING THE PAST. Retired Royal Admiral Guy Richmond Griffiths (left), 97, and David Henry Mattiskie, 96, (center) join the three-day commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the historic Battle of Surigao Strait, from October 23 to 25, 2019 in Surigao City. A floral offering at sea was placed near the area where the battle took place. (Photo courtesy of DOT-13 Information Office)
SURIGAO CITY -- Retired Royal Admiral Guy Richmond Griffiths and David Henry Mattiskie, both part of the Australian Navy when the World War II broke out, arrived in town to join the three-day commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the historic Battle of Surigao Strait from October 23 to 25, in this city. The Australians were allied with the United States and the Philippines that fought the Imperial Japanese forces. Griffiths, now 97 years old and Mattiskie, 96, flew back to the Philippines to join the event. “War is a dreadful part of civilization,” Griffiths told PNA in an interview as he expressed gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for the peace that nations and their citizens are enjoying nowadays. “You come from peace and suddenly, somebody wants to create war,” Griffiths recalled the time when Japan declared war against the US and bombed Pearl Harbor and parts of the Philippines, particularly Davao. He said war remains a horrible experience for humans as millions die and countries enormously devastated. Griffiths said that at his age, he could not still understand what anyone would get from the death of millions of people "and the colossal devastations of countries and communities." “My question is: what’s been achieved from these aggressions? Countries have to rebuild. Fathers, sons, daughters, and families were killed. It’s dreadful,” Griffiths asked. He said the key to maintaining peace in the world today is mutual understanding and good relationships among nations. “We need to talk to each other and maintain good relationships and understanding between people, rather than aggressive,” Griffiths said. Early morning battle Griffiths can still recall where he was positioned during the historic Battle of Surigao Strait that started the early morning of October 25, 1944. He was on board the HMAS Shropshire, an Australian gun cruiser serving as Assistant Control Officer. “On the morning of the 25th of October, we started firing just before 4 o'clock or at 3:56 in the morning,” Griffiths told PNA in an interview. “When we were firing, I was the Assistant Control Officer. The firing was from down below but I could see all the firing that was going on,” he added. Since it was still dark, Griffiths said all he could see from the distance are fires in Japanese ships that were badly-hit by torpedoes. “One exploded. I could only see the explosions, the fire,” he said. Mattiskie said he was at the bridge when the firing started. “We were firing at 4 in the morning. I was on board the HMAS Shropshire. I was at the bridge at that time listening to what was happening. I knew that the Americans were also firing their torpedoes towards the enemy ships,” he said. Griffiths said the firing stopped at past 4 a.m. “and that was the end of the battle.” Six Japanese warships, under the command of Vice-Admiral Shoji Nishimura, were destroyed during the Battle of Surigao Strait: Fuso, Yamagumo, Asagumo, Yamashiro, Michishio, and Mogami. Nishimura was among the more than 4,000 Japanese sailors who perished during the battle. The historical account said 39 American sailors were also killed during the Battle of Surigao Strait. (PNA)

The Rudder, 1916
Page 312: The express cruiser Flyaway III and Peter Pan, a new boat of the Cinderella type, gave two good exhibitions in the regatta of the Columbia Yacht Club on June 3rd, on the Hudson River, but unfortunately their performance counts for naught, because of the way in which the course was laid off and described. it was said to be a triangle of 5 “knots,” nautical miles was meant, and this triangle was covered four times by each boat. The Flyaway III’s time was 54 minutes 2 seconds, which makes her speed, assuming the course was accurate, to be 23.2 nautical or 26.68 statute miles an hour. The Peter Pan went four times around the triangle in 44 minutes 21 seconds, but, as usual with James Simpson’s boats, she hit a log and limped home with a big dent in her hull and a bent shaft. her best time was on the second round of the triangle, which she covered in 9 minutes 23 seconds. This is at the rate of 31.97 nautical or 36.76 statute miles an hour. Remarkably good going for a vessel of her type and power — she is driven by a 90-h.p. Sterling.
Page 340: Peter Pan VII, James Simpson’s fast hydroplane, is being prepared for racing and will go after all the prizes in sight, including the Gold Challenge Cup, the Thousand Islands Cup, and the Wrigley Trophy. Mr. Simpson hopes that Peter Pan will go so fast that Commodore Pugh will have to race Disturber IV to defend his laurels.
Page 388: The races for the Gold Challenge cup will be held at Detroit, on September 2, 4 and 5. Miss Detroit will defend and she will meet Miss Minneapolis, Commodore J.A. Pugh’s Disturber V, a new boat owned by Mr. Jackson, built by Vandershen, at Camden, and driven by two Packard motors, and possible James Simpson’s Peter Pan VII, Col. Du Pont’s Tech Jr. and one of Carl fisher’s speed boats.
Page 415: In addition there will be the Peter Pan VII, which won the Thousand Islands Challenge Cup, and several more of the fastest boats in the country.
Page 429: In the first heat, P.D.Q. IV was first away, followed by P.D.Q. VI, Peter Pan VII and Hawkeye. Peter Pan VII was 27 seconds late and Hawkeye 49 seconds after the signal. Peter Pan VII soon took the lead and running very steadily, but without being driven hard, won easily. The elapsed times were: Peter Pan VII, 39:44 3/5; Hawkeye, 45:52; P.D.Q. IV, 50:07 3/5; P.D.Q. VI, did not finish, stopping on the second lap with a broken crank shaft. Peter Pan VII averaged 49 miles an hour.
In the second race, Peter Pan VII broke a gasoline feed pipe, and was delayed 35 minutes. Repairs were made, and she finished the race. Hawkeyes won in 47 minutes 26 seconds. P.D.Q. IV was second and Peter Pan VII third.
On the third day, Peter Pan VII completed the course in 39 minutes 12 2/5 seconds, Hawkeye in 42:34 1/5 and P.D.Q. IV in 48:24 3/5. This made Hawkeye and Peter Pan tied int he point score and a fourth race was necessary and it was agreed that the two should go one lap of the course. Peter Pan had trouble with her clutch at the start and it was three minutes before she could be started properly and was then in a crippled condition. She could not catch Hawkeye although she cut down much of the distance between the two boats. Hawkeyes time was 13 minutes 38 1/2 seconds and that of Peter Pan VII 15 minutes 7 4/5 seconds. Peter Pan’s actual time was 12:09 4/5, an average of 53.5 miles an hour.
Hawkeyes was built by Hacker, and is powered with a Van Blerck engine. The others in the races are equipped with Sterling engines. The Peter Pan VII has two eight-cylinder engines of 180-200 h.p. each.
The judges of the races were Rear-commodore C. Allen Hayden, I.H. Jenny, Chester A. Hoag, Richard H. Eggleston and C.F. Chapman.
Commodore Judson drove his own boat and was heartily congratulated on his success. Peter Pan VII was driven by Fred Floyd, P.D.Q. IV by J. Harold Hayden, and P.D.Q. VI by A. Graham Miles.
Page 437: Miss Minneapolis won the Gold Challenge Cup, and the home of that famous trophy for a year, at least, will be Minneapolis. The new Miss defeated Miss Detroit, Baby Marold, Peter Pan VII, Hawkeye and Miss Mamtramck in a series of three races which will long be remembered by those who were fortunate to witness them.
Page 438: Baby Marold ran on practically even terms with the Miss Minneapolis as far as the outer turn, when her troubles commenced. Due to the excessive heat, she was having trouble with the spark plugs, some of which had melted, causing backfire, which blew out the air valves in the carburetors. However, Beebe managed to keep her going, and she maintained second position for two laps, after which she was passed by Miss Detroit, Hawkeye and Peter Pan VII in the order named. By the end of the fourth lap Peter Pan had made up most of the time she had lost at the start and had passed Miss Detroit and Hawkeye. At the end of the fifty lap she was just 55 seconds behind the leader, Miss Minneapolis, and on the final lap, closed up this gap, finishing but 14 seconds behind.
Page 439: Miss Minneapolis, as usual, was over the line first, 11 seconds behind the gun, Peter Pan VII next 15 seconds late, Miss Detroit and Hawkeye going over 16 seconds after gunfire, with the former a fraction of a second in the lead, and the Baby Marold, which only left the boathouse at the starting time, 1 minute 13 seconds late. At the end of the first round Baby Marold had cut Miss Minneapolis’s lead to only 13 seconds and crossed the line even with Peter Pan VII, and immediately drew away from her, passed Miss Detroit, who was in second position, and went after the leader.
Page 440: Baby Marold’s actual time for the first round (5 nautical miles) was 6 minutes 14 seconds, or at the rate of 55-35 statute miles an hour, which up to that time was best speed shown. Meanwhile Miss Detroit maintained second position throughout the race with the Peter Pan third, and Old Relaible (Hawkeye) last. The times are as follows…. ……. This happening just shortly before the race was to start made everyone feel badly, and when the Peter Pan requested a half hour’s postponement to get in shape, it was gladly granted.
In the previous day’s race, the bolts in one of the main shaft bearing caps broke, and getting adrift, was driven back and forth and punched several holes in the base. By working all night, Floyd and Shrafer were able to get the Peter Pan in shape again, thanks to the courtesy of Chris Smith, who went to Algonac for spare parts by automobile and to the Sterling Engine Company, who sent others by parcel post.
Miss Minneapolis was again over the line first 14 seconds after the gun. Miss Detroit 17, Peter Pan 22, and Hawkeye 23 seconds late. At the end of the first lap, they were all in the same relative positions, although Miss Minneapolis increased her lead slightly over the Miss Detroit, while Peter Pan seemed to be in difficulty, and Shrafer was seen to be using a fire extinguisher as she went over the line.
The race developed into a two-boat contest, as both the leaders drew steadily away from the others. At the end of the fourth lap Peter Pan withdrew, another main bearing cap having given way, and in addition to punching more holes in the base was driven against the cam shaft, bending it to such an extent as to make it absolutely useless.
Page 441: There was a certain amount of satisfaction to the local organization in having the Miss Detroit win at least one race, but the Miss Minneapolis by winning the other two had gained a sufficient lead in points to win the Cup. With the Peter Pan out, Hawkeye finished in third position both in this last race and in the points, the totals being: Miss Minneapolis 20, Miss Detroit 18, and Hawkeye 13. The times for the various laps and totals were as follows…..
Page 485: Hawkeye won the first series of races for the Thousand Islands Challenge Cup, with Peter Pan VII finishing second.
