#OTD in 1916 – Battle of the Somme Ends.
This dreadful battle claimed more Irish lives in combat than any other battle in history. On the first day of battle, 1 July 1916, the 36th Ulster Division suffered an estimated 5,500 casualties almost all of whom were drawn from the north of Ireland. Nearly 2,000 Irish soldiers were killed in the first few hours of fighting following a morning mist that poet Siegfried Sassoon referenced as “of…

1st / 2nd September 1918 - Western Front. The 7th Battalion was in action near Neuve Eglise about 12 Kms south of Ypres. At this time they were in 21st Brigade, 30th Division. On the 30th August the Division discovered that the Germans in front of them had withdrawn and they advanced on the following day. By dusk the 7th Battalion's right flank was on the Dranoutre - Neuve Eglise road where they dug in for the night. Orders were received by the battalion to advance on Neuve Eglise on the morning of September 1st. However at 4 am the battalion was ordered to attack Wulverghem. The advance began at 5.30 am, encountered no serious opposition until 9 am when they reached the Kemmel - Neuve Eglise road. Here they were held up by heavy MG and trench mortar fire from Neuve Eglise Ridge on their right flank. The battalion Stokes Mortars silenced the MGs nearest the battalion. Several attempts to advance were made during the day, but all were unsuccessful. The battalion dug in at nightfall.
On the 2nd, a patrol made contact with the 36th (Ulster) Division on the right flank. Several attempts were made to advance during the day but all failed. After 6 pm a short artillery barrage was followed by an attack on Wulverghem by 2/23rd London Regiment. A Company of the 7th Battalion participated in this attack. The battalion was relieved after dark. Casualties over the two days, according to the Battalion War Diary, were 2 Officers and 15 ORs killed, 3 Officers and 55 ORs wounded and 5 men missing.
Although the Regimental History records the majority of the casualties as taking place on September 1st, the CWGC records them as having been killed the following day.

The man management will be more important than ever. The build up before the first games is so supercharged with tension that this is where the coach earns his corn. "I wasn't really mad we didn't win," Cube wrote on Twitter. "So I would never diss the actors who won.

The May bank holiday weekend has brought some cold winds from the north, but thankfully some blue sky too, and having developed a bit of cabin fever lately, we decided to get out for a good walk. There are loads of great walks around Bangor, particularly around the coast, but as we are now into bluebell season, we decided to have a wander in the historic woods of the Clandeboye Estate.
Native British Bluebell with bells along one side and a hooked tip
The invasive Spanish Bluebell, more robust and upright than it’s British cousin
Clandeboye is the home of Lady Dufferin, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava, and the area has been settled since 1647; so for context, that would be getting towards the end of the English Civil War. Bangor itself goes back much further, the Annals of Ulster show that there was a monastery founded by St Comgall here in 558AD.  Although this started out as quite an austere rule, with several of the monks dying of malnutrition; over time things changed, and the order became fairly wealthy attracting the attention of the Viking’s in the 8th and 9th centuries.
Much later, in 1857, the First Marquess of Dufferin constructed a tower on his grounds, in memory of his mother, Helen. Helen’s Tower still stands as a landmark and was the inspiration for a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It would have been a familiar sight to the men of the 36th Ulster Division who had their training camp in Clandeboye prior to deployment in the First World War.
Clandeboye is important for its broadleaved woodland, and many of the beech trees still bear the initials and marks of the men who were stationed there. As you walk in the stillness of the woods, it’s very difficult not to be moved by these inscriptions, knowing that so many of the men would never return home.
One of the huge beech trees bearing inscriptio, on the Clandeyboye Estate
The 36th Ulster Division were renowned for their bravery; when they were deployed to boost the ranks of those already stationed at Thiepval they were said to have been a supreme boost of morale for the other Allied forces. Anyone familiar with the history of WWI will know that the battle of the Somme was a massacre and the 36th were all but wiped out.
At the time, it was said that a man from every street in Ulster died at the Somme. Though that wasn’t actually the case, the devastation was so profound, that it certainly must have felt like it. When recounting the battle, one of the English officers recounted the following.
“I am not an Ulsterman but yesterday, the 1st. July, as I followed their amazing attack, I felt that I would rather be an Ulsterman than anything else in the world. My pen cannot describe adequately the hundreds of heroic acts that I witnessed… The Ulster Volunteer Force, from which the division was made, has won a name which equals any in history. Their devotion deserves the gratitude of the British Empire”
— Wilfred Spende
In memory of the last view of home; the Ulster Tower war memorial at Thiepval is a copy of Helen’s Tower.
More recently, Clandeboye was mentioned in an Episode of Downton Abbey, by the ineffable Dowager Duchess and apparently  before the Troubles, it was a favorite destination of the Queen Mother.
Clandeyboye’s most recent claim to fame, however, has been much more bloodthirsty, as it was used as one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones. The Estate was used for a number of scenes, most notably where  after escaping Harrenhal, Arya & Gendry meet the Brotherhood and the Red Woman;  again when Sandor Clegane took some revenge on the Brotherhood and most recently when Arya heard Ed Sheeran singing at a campfire. Some evidence still remains from filming, though most of it is now long gone.
Should you want to visit NI and do some exploring for yourself, the Tower has been recently renovated and can be booked for accommodation through Irish Landmarks http://www.Irishlandmarks,com
  G\oT any criminals?
Reminants of a camp fire
Winter is over!
A spring walk through historic Clandeboye woods The May bank holiday weekend has brought some cold winds from the north, but thankfully some blue sky too, and having developed a bit of cabin fever lately, we decided to get out for a good walk.

Royal Irish Regiment History
16th August 1917
The Battle of Langemarck
Tumblr media
On 16th August 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele, the 2nd Bn, Royal Irish was in 49th Brigade, 16th (Irish) Division. This day saw the start of the phase of the battle called the Battle of Langemarck. The brigade was front left of the division with 48th Bde on its right and 47th Bde in support. In 49th Bde, 7th Bn, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers attacked on the left with 7/8th Bn, Royal Irish Fusiliers in the centre and 8th Bn, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on the right. The 2nd Royal Irish Regiment was to occupy the brigade frontline when the attack commenced. A, C and D companies were in the frontline with B Coy in support.
The attack commenced at 4.45 am. One company of the 7/8th Bn, Royal Irish Fusiliers had as their objective Beck House. Two platoons from C Coy, 2nd Royal Irish Regiment went forward at 5 am to occupy this objective, although as it transpired Beck House was still in German hands. They took several casualties on the advance and remained near Beck House until ordered back at 10 am.
8th Bn, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on the right was held up by MG fire from a concrete blockhouse named Borry Farm.  At 8.45 am they sent a message back to Lt-Col Scott of 2nd Royal Irish that Borry Farm had not been mopped up and that the Inniskillings were being sniped from there. Scott ordered D Coy forward to attack Borry Farm but the attack was cancelled when 2/Lt Wilson commanding D Coy found a company of 7th Inniskillings already doing that job.
On the left 7th Inniskillings got as far forward as Delva Farm. At 9 am a German counterattack pushed back the right hand battalion of 36th Ulster Division on the 16th Division’s left. This forced the retirement of the 7th Inniskillings who joined the 2nd Royal Irish in their original frontline. The Royal Irish was relieved by 6th Connaught Rangers at midnight.

During the days action Lance Corporal Frederick Room (above) earned the Victoria Cross. His company was holding a line of shell-holes and short trenches and had many casualties, Lance-Corporal Room was in charge of the stretcher-bearers. He worked continuously under intense fire, dressing the wounded and helping to evacuate them. Throughout this period, with complete disregard for his own life, he showed unremitting devotion to his duties. He was the fourth and last member of the Royal Irish to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

The Ulster Tower in Thiepval, France, was officially opened in November 1921. The memorial is dedicated to the men of the 36th Ulster Division which took heavy casualties at the Battle of the Somme.
Here you can see the devastation on the battlefield that still lay around the tower in 1921.
