Let’s Talk About Pokemon - Relicanth

369: Relicanth

Dang guys, we're already getting dangerously close to the end of Gen 3 here. Both in writing these reviews ahead of time and in uploading them now, the end kinda snuck up on me. But today we got a pretty neat Pokemon.

But I think to give proper introduction to Relicanth, it's best to talk about its origin first, since pretty much everything about it comes from the animal it's based on.

The Coelacanth is a fish often referred to as a “living fossil.” The entire thing's Order was thought to have gone extinct since the Cretaceous period. But a living Coelacanth was found back in 1938. And as I said, pretty much everything about Relicanth is based on this bit of Coelacanth history right here. It has pretty much the same lore in its dex entries; a species of Pokemon long thought to be extinct, until someone found one of these exceptionally rare oldmanfish. It's also supposedly not evolved one bit over 100 million years. (Darwin-flavored evolution, obviously.)

Relicanth also is half Rock type, like all the other prehistoric Pokemon. And I appreciate that every little thing about its physical design communicates “old.” It's all brown and musty looking, has a closed-eyed wrinkled face like an old man, complete with a jaggy underbite. If I were asked to redesign Relicanth, I'd be hard-pressed to figure something out because the dang thing looks near perfect as is.

Just one of those Pokemon that are really neat.

Its many fins make Relicanth quite acrobatic in the water. It can rotate its body in any direction without moving forward. This ability is used to stabilize itself in strong currents.
