For #FerrariFriday a sweet #328GTS that I drove with last spring on a local rally. By the time of the 328’s introduction, it’s basic platform and styling had been around for a decade - but nobody ever criticized it’s styling, a masterwork by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti. While most of the attention on Ferraris in the mid-80s was on the 512 Testarossa and the 288GTO, the 328 was a major money spinner for #Maranello and almost universally well regarded - it sold well right up until it was replaced by the 348, which had a more difficult road. In those days exotic cars did not sell in the numbers they do now, except for this one - 7,412 328’s were made (6,068 of them GTSs) - almost 60% of the 308’s high total, itself a brisk seller by exotic standards. The car’s great lines (only mildly restyled and softened for the aero-look 80s), engaging personality, and fame in a time when classic Ferraris were suddenly becoming very expensive all helped propel sales. As with the 308, the GTS and GTB designations continued - S for Spider (in truth, a Targa), B for Berlinetta (fixed roof), as did the transverse V8, now at 3,185-cc and 265-ish hp and still with the four-valves-per-cylinder layout pioneered in the 308QV (Quattrovalvole). Standard disclaimer: doesn’t sound like much compared with a 458 Italia, but in 1986 this was a very fast car, and 32V V8s were still cutting edge. In #Italy the smaller 2-liter turbos continued, though they were also now called 328s (as opposed to 208s). Sometimes referred to as the last “analog” Ferrari, the 328 nevertheless got some electronic updates during production - including the addition of optional ABS in 1988. The “analog” designation was applied in hindsight - the 348’s complex electrical system was a totally different universe, and every Ferrari since has had even more electronic gadgetry. They’ve gotten more expensive over the years - in the early 2000s you could buy one for just $35K (more like $75K now for a good one) - but as a classic they are a remarkably cheap Ferrari to run, with a major service costing less than $3K unless the car’s trashed. Not as fast as modern #exotics but much more interesting. #Ferrari328GTS
