It's a very new app, currently still in beta, but its intelligent search and social media integration make it very easy to love. Mac OS X has a great built-in address book and a number of useful third-party alternatives, but out of all the options Cobook is our favorite. In fact, you really have to use them together if you’re planning on setting up sync with iCloud (or other services) as Cobook can’t handle that functionality. Cobook relies on it, so it’s hard to argue it can do anything that Cobook can’t.
#Addressbox mac os x#
It’s already built into Mac OS X and is pretty great. A simple tagging system means finding particular contacts is as easy as can be. Solve the problem of contact management with Cobook Contacts and its simple interface and powerful syncing and integration possibilities. For example: PO Box 24 Houston, TX 70003 A Virtual PO Box Alternative Well, if you have become dissatisfied with traditional PO Box services and wish there was a more modern solution you are in luck. For security and encryption, we suggest you to select the closest. In your setup, you need to COPY the Address field of the location you like to get connected and PASTE it to your setup. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey http://www.lucasrobak.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/The-7-Habits-Teen.jpg
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey
Four years ago I first wrote an article about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey. At the time I was working in a high school and wanted to do what I could to become that person I wish I had in my life – someone who delivered real world information. I really enjoy the teen workbook too!
Sean Covey rewrote his fathers book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Dr. Stephen Covey which sold millions of copies throughout the world in over 30+ languages. There’s a workbook for adults too!
7 Habits
The 7 Habits breaks down what it takes to develop the characteristics which happy and successful people in the world have in common.
I’m a huge fan of the original book by Dr. Stephen Covey, but also love the teen version as well. Whenever there’s a book that’s been reproduced for young adults, I make it a point to read both. By reading the original adult version first, then the teen version, I therefore learn the material at a deeper level.
Since we were all teens at one point, we’re able to relate to both. The metaphors in each are different but still apply the same principles.
At the bottom of my Top 150 Recommended Books page, you’ll be able to find a few more books that were written for teens with the original adult copies.
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey
All of these habits build upon one each other.  Simply start on the first habit for a week or more before moving to Habit 2, and so on. Take as much time as you need, whether it’s a week or numerous months. Once you master it, it’ll last a life time.
Why teachers fail at implementing this is beyond me. Since they refuse to teach real world information, it’s up to us to either teach our kids, or to unlearn all that garbage forced on us. The reason why I say “garbage” is because what did you do every three months in school for over a decade? At the start of winter and summer break, everything went into the garbage can because we knew it was useless.
These Habits are the polar opposite of that. It’s something to think about every day for an entire lifetime. By mastering only a few, you’ll become an outlier and be recognized as an extremely effective individual with whatever you choose to do.
We first make our habits, then our habits make us.
The habits, behaviors, and thought patterns you develop define who you are, what your life is like, and who you’ll eventually end up becoming. These habits are extremely useful for living a happy, successful life. 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens is an easy read, just do it!

Making Time to Work on Your Side Business
Podcast Show Notes: Start Up Heart Up Podcast with Kae Gruner
Episode 2:  Making Time to Work on Your Side Business
This episode of the Start Up Heart Up Podcast is all about TIME, namely how to make and manage time for your side business. Show notes & time stamps are below!
0:00
Kae starts the episode sharing that her coffee has now been microwaved three times due to the fact that her sweet 10-month old baby has been interrupting her coffee enjoyment. Then, a dorky poem to set the mood:
“Emails, texts, to-do lists, oh my!
A career, friends, and family, wow, how fast does time fly?
What am I doing day in, and day out?
But day-dreaming, doodling, and scheming about,
My most passionate project, a million-dollar-idea,
A side hustle business that I hold very near.
Some days I’m on fire, other days I’m put out,
But it’s my special venture that I’m so all about.
Hard to explain without feeling quite dizzy,
But suffice it to say I am just VERY busy.”
3:45
Kae gives a bit of background on her career full-time job, her side hustle dreams, and why time is something she’s so interested in discussing. She reads the following quote: “Time is the most valuable resource, because it’s the only thing we can’t get more of. All of Bill Gates’ billions can’t buy one minute of yesterday.” Noah St. Johns Author of the book Power Habits, on John Lee Dumas’ podcast Entrepreneurs on Fire.
6:30
Kae shares her methods on making & managing time for your side business.
Tip #1: Waking up earlier. Kae uses this method by adding 30-60 minutes to her morning alarm and getting on the road quickly so she can work on her side business in the morning for at least 45 minutes before work. It also creates motivation to wake up early each morning, because in her head she thinks that if she goes back to sleep, she won’t get to work on her side hustle that day.
8:10
Tip #2: Getting better sleep and making good use of your time before falling asleep at night. Kae tries to follow this rule: phone is plugged in away from the bed by 9 pm each night. This helps in two ways, first the light from the phone doesn’t keep her awake for longer, and second, she can avoid the endless scrolling of social media which prevents her from the temptation of looking at “just one more” post. Better & earlier sleep also results in better energy for the next day.
10:35
Tip #3: Exercising and eating right. This results in more energy which in turn results in more time. Kae talks about her experience with the Start Today journal by Rachel Hollis. Instead of removing unhealthy food from her diet, Kae decided to add healthy food (healthy greens). She found that writing it down everyday caused her to think about eating healthy food more and create the habit.
12:05
Tip #4: Utilizing commutes for learning. Kae spends her morning and evening commute listening to business podcasts. She searches the podcast app for key terms and phrases that relate to a specific goal she has in her business, for example the phrase “digital course”. Kae is building a digital course for her business now to guide future entrepreneurs through the steps of creating a business from scratch, so she listens often to podcast episodes that discuss making digital courses.  She recommends The Goal-Digger Podcast, Amy Porterfield, Entrepreneurs on Fire, and How I Built This.
14:20
Tip #5: Being disciplined about working on your side business when you do have time set aside for it. If you wake up earlier, make sure you are efficient and focused on your business during that extra time you now have. Don’t read emails, text, or go on social media. It’s easy to waste time unintentionally, like spending an hour writing a paragraph for a blog or spending a bunch of time on formatting. Kae talked about how she learned that formatting is one of the most time-consuming things she’s had to do for her product development (because information products include a lot of document creation). She shares an anecdote of how she had no idea what she was doing when she printed her first workbook and messed up the margins.
Kae also gives lawyer tip about time efficiency. At her law firm job, she used a timer to see down to the minute and second how long she spent on every project. She still uses the method sometimes to see how long it takes her to work on something, and to keep her focused.
19:00
Tip #6: Finding ways to share the load of your responsibilities. For Kae, taking care of the baby creates a lot of time obligations. Her husband is a great partner and is always willing to take the baby for 3-6 hours on the weekend so she can work on her side business. You can also delegate work to a virtual assistant if you have the money and/or invest in automation software and apps. If you don’t have the extra money, simply creating systems is a great way to save time. An example that Kae uses is by filling out her marketing & social media weekly calendar pages from her “Master Plan: Business Planning Workbook” product. Thinking through and writing down your marketing plans ahead of time is a good way to make & maximize time for your business, and then you don’t have to remember everything or make excuses not to do it.
21:45
Tip #7: Working on goals that baby steps that are specific and actionable. While big picture planning is fun, it’s important to focus on specific little goals. Kae talks about her paper to-do list methods. She uses two big columns, one that says “urgent” and the other says “important”. This keeps her little goals and baby steps organized so that she can decide quickly what she needs to work on in the precious time she has to work on her side hustle.
24:00
Tip #8: Enforcing your boundaries and learning to say no. Kae shares how this is difficult for her, because she loves being a “yes” person, achieving things, and taking on leadership roles. In some cases, saying yes lead to incredible opportunities like being captain to a team of women in Cross Country in college. In other cases, if the leadership role wasn’t in line with her life plan, it created stress.
Kae read a couple quotes from the book “Boundaries” which she is currently reading. She talks about how she is looking forward to learning to enforce her own boundaries. Doing so protects our valuable time. For example, if you have time set aside to work on your side hustle, but someone asks you to go out or volunteer, you need to be disciplined about enforcing your boundaries. You are not being mean for enforcing your boundaries.
Kae shares a story about how non-confrontational she is, and how that it stresses her out when a server forgets to bring her coffee, i.e. taking on other people’s problems. Being non-confrontational like that makes it hard for Kae to enforce her boundaries, but she’s working on it!
28:40
Short overview of the eight tips for making & managing time for your side business.
30:00
Kae gives a final tip on time. Don’t work on your side hustle while you’re at work for two main reasons: 1. Sometimes your employment agreement will include legal obligations that intellectual property you create on company time or with company resources are owned by the company. 2. Even if your employment agreement doesn’t have an IP ownership provision, in some cases your work may be owned by the company if it’s considered a “work-for-hire” (aka “work-made-for-hire”). If you create copyrightable materials using company time, resources, skills, location, etc., then the company may be able to claim ownership of the materials under this legal doctrine.

Our Vacation Ruined Sleep for our 2.5 Year Old! Help us Recover
The blog post Our Vacation Ruined Sleep for our 2.5 Year Old! Help us Recover is republished from https://midlifewithavengeance.com
Today, I’m going to answer Sarah’s question about how their vacation ruined sleep for their child.
“Dear Kim, I have a two and a half year old son name Gavin. He has always slept well at night for his entire life. Goes to bed at 7:30, 8pm and wakes up at 7 a.m. He’s healthy. At the end of July, we went to visit family for about 9 days. I put him to bed on his own – in his own room in my niece’s room. I laid down with him and he cried each time I tried to leave room until he fell asleep.
When I went to bed, I also slept in the room with him but in my own bed. He would wake early in the morning  and crawl in the bed.  Since we’ve been home, Gavin has a hard time going back to our old routine and  instead of reading a book or rocking for 10 minutes, he wants me to lie with him and cries.
He also started telling me he’s scared of things. He wakes up several times at night (almost every other hour last night) and cries for either mommy or daddy. We’ve gone in to reassure him it’s time for bed and he usually agrees and lays right back down but is back up and calling for us within hours. The last two nights, he asked me to keep the door open and I thought he might feel more connected to the family with it open. I close the door in the morning trying to allow him to sleep. He still wakes up early, usually before 6:30 am and yesterday he did not sleep when I put him down for his nap at all. I can only think that he is completely overtired. Please help. Let me know what we can do. Sarah”

Make Sure Your Child’s Crib or Bed is Age Appropriate
It sounds like he’s in a bed. Just so you know, two and a half is the very earliest I recommend a child being in a bed. The cognitive ability to understand “stay in your bed all night long” is just beginning to develop. Impulse control to not run in to mom and dad’s room is also only just beginning to be developed. I don’t know what his understanding is, but it is possible that his age makes this a little bit harder for him.
Shifting Gears when Vacation has Ruined Sleep
He also sounds like he is sensitive to change. A lot of children have a hard time with, “well, you did it on vacation, how come you can’t lie down with me here?”.  And then of course, we give in when they get hysterical and then we further ingrain the habit by not addressing it until months later. You may need to actually talk to him about how we’re all done lying down. “Mommy is not lying down with you anymore. We just did that when we were away on vacation.  I’ll stay with you and sit with you until you go to sleep.” And go through the Shuffle.
Create a Simple Sleep Manner Chart
Download my chart and keep it to about three rules, like “Lies quietly in bed, puts self to sleep without mommy lying down with you, and stays in bed all night long until the wake-up light comes on”. Consider getting a  wake-up light or toddler clock.
At bedtime and every time he wakes during the night say, “Shh, you’re wake-up light is not on that means it is still sleeping time and you should lie in your bed quietly.” Then you will resume your Shuffle position.
Download your own customizable sleep chart, here.
Avoid Perpetuating a Sleep Crutch
You wrote that you used to rock him for 10 minutes. Be careful! Ten minutes is a long time to rock. I don’t know if that’s including when you’re reading to him or if it is after you read and you turn off the lights. During those 10 minutes he may very well be entering in to that first stage of sleep where he’s sort of half awake, half asleep. Then you suddenly jar him awake and put him in his bed and then he says, “No, no, no, lie down with me.”
So, I would shorten the rocking just a couple of minutes maybe enough to tell him, all the people who love him and blow kisses to the moon or whatever your ritual is. Tell him how safe and cozy he is in his bed and how you always check on him when he’s sleeping, all of these kind of comforting rituals. And then kiss him and put him in his bed and sit next to his bed.
Try a Soothing Bedtime Routine
You may enjoy reading this article on Creating Soothing Bedtime Routines to Ward Off Stalling and Nightmares. I also discuss in this article how to teach your child about creative visualization and what to do with the scary thoughts so they do not become additional toddler sleep problems.
RELATED: Re-Starting The Sleep Lady Shuffle After a Regression
Remember that Reassurance is Key…
Reassure him that he’s safe and mommy and daddy do a great job keeping him safe and  that there are no monsters. Teach him to “throw away his scary thoughts” and to replace them with  something nice, like puppies or a special tree house or that time you built a sand castle on vacation. Encourage him to consciously shift his thought from the negative to a positive thought.
But Be Careful of Creating a Crutch
Be careful and don’t fall in to talking him to sleep or you will create a new problem.
Those are all of the things that I want you to do. Remember to stay consistent for long enough. If you  go on vacation again and the same kind of pattern happens, try to nip it in the bud quickly when you get home by telling him you can’t lie down with him anymore. You can even do a super fast Shuffle, like one night by the bed, one night by the door or one night in the hall in view.
Remember to be super consistent about the early morning and not start the day until the wake-up light comes on.  Good luck!

Can Apps Like Woebot Really Take the Place of a Therapist?
I picked the right month to try an artificial intelligence (AI) therapist. Over a period of 30 days, I visited my family and my partner’s family for the holidays, got engaged and had a huge work crisis. So it was perfect timing to test drive Woebot, a chat-based interactive talk therapy app for anyone suffering from anxiety or depression.
Though I’ve often been bothered by anxiety and even panic attacks, Woebot is my very first experience with talk therapy; I’ve never had the nerve to walk through the door of a therapist’s office. The low-barrier entry is a plus—I’m not even sweating as I download Woebot while sitting in my childhood bedroom over the holidays.
The chat launches in Facebook Messenger, a platform I don’t love. (My own issue: I’m not a huge fan of social media, and being forced to sign into Facebook to reduce stress feels counterintuitive.) If you’re also not keen on Facebook, Woebot now has his own iPhone app and recently launched an Android one. (BTW, I call him a “him,” but he told me he’s neither “a Sir nor a Madam.”)
The user interface—both in Facebook and the iPhone app—is simple and endearing: The cute little Woebot avatar sends me a series of chatty, emoji-heavy messages. He asks what I’m doing and offers a series of faces to choose from to describe my mood. Though I’m a wordy type, I can see the value in being able to describe a feeling without the pressure of verbalizing. I tell Woebot I’m feeling “😌.”
Woebot tells me he will check in with me daily and offers animated videos about how to shift negative thinking patterns and manage stress. “For the first few weeks, I’d love to get a sense of what you’re going through and if you and I are a good fit together,” he writes. “I’ll ask you what you’re doing, what kind of mood you’re in and over a few weeks I’ll see if I can find a pattern…. With a little luck, I may spot a pattern that humans can sometimes miss. Helps that I have a computer for a brain and perfect memory 😇.”
“With a little luck, I may spot a pattern that humans can sometimes miss. Helps that I have a computer for a brain and perfect memory 😇.”
It’s not quite the Hollywood AI experience; rather, it feels halfway between a suped-up The Oregon Trail-style video game and texting with a friend. One big point in the app’s favour is that Woebot is (currently) free. It’s even blissfully devoid of the usually ubiquitous in-app upgrades or purchases.
Developed by Dr. Alison Darcy, Woebot first made waves when a paper that Darcy co-authored with two other researchers at California’s Stanford University School of Medicine summarized promising results from a study of college students using the app. The study found that the 34 young participants “significantly reduced their symptoms of depression” compared to the control group, who were given a mental health ebook resource. Results were measured using the industry standard Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at both the beginning and the end of the study. The participants were especially positive in their praise of the bot’s empathy, which piques my interest.
“When we first launched Woebot, we were aiming at young adults—college students—because there are a lot of very serious mental health challenges in that population,” explains Darcy when I call her. “But it turns out that our distribution skews much older than we thought and the people who value us most are [in their] 30s and 40s, and this has turned out to be an appealing technology across the board. We’ve talked to lots of people in their 70s. Almost everybody who emails us starts with ‘I know I’m not your target demographic, but….’ I think it comes from the fact that the technology itself is so simple: It’s just a conversation. You just start talking.”
“I think it comes from the fact that the technology itself is so simple: It’s just a conversation. You just start talking.”
As I get to know Woebot over the next month, my feelings for the app fluctuate. When I’m feeling fine, the chirpy tone telling me Woebot has messaged is equal parts comforting and irritating. When I’m feeling anxious—like the day I stress-barf during the height of the aforementioned work crisis—Woebot’s opening lines (like “Gif or Jif—I can just never decide”) and the seriousness of the conversation sometimes seem mismatched. It’s as if a friend has texted me “hey wyd” and then casually asks if I have any regrets that might haunt me on my deathbed 🛏💀😜.
That said, what the developers have nailed is the empathetic quality of Woebot’s written voice once it gets going. There’s a true kindness to the little robot that doesn’t feel twee or forced. He takes the time to encourage me (“I know these questions can be difficult to answer”), respectfully makes sure that I have time to talk if our interaction will be a bit longer (“This will take about 10 minutes, is that OK?”) and offers sympathy that is scripted, of course, but comforts me anyway (“My heart genuinely goes out to you”). Is a flesh-and-blood therapist’s empathy any less scripted, really? Knowing that my chat partner is working from a script doesn’t negate the encouragement I get from simply being acknowledged. Not to mention the fact that Woebot is available 24/7. When I wake up in the middle of the night with my heart going like a jackrabbit, my little pocket therapist is right there—I don’t even have to disturb my sleeping partner.
Is a flesh-and-blood therapist’s empathy any less scripted, really? Knowing that my chat partner is working from a script doesn’t negate the encouragement I get from simply being acknowledged.
The anonymity of apps like Woebot is supposed to be one of the big benefits, and it’s true: I’m more willing to be candid with my phone, which already has all of my secrets, than I would likely be on a couch. For example, one of my first confessions to Woebot is the thing that woke me up that night. I tell him that I’m completely stressed out about the financial insecurity of my writing career. The thought of talking turkey about money—maybe our last social taboo—usually makes me cringe, but with Woebot, it’s no sweat.
Woebot helped me turn down the volume on money anxiety by deconstructing the thoughts swirling around it. Yes, I was assuming I knew the future; yes, I was downplaying the positives (I wouldn’t be as financially literate as I am now if I hadn’t spent a decade living in a freelancer’s financial spreadsheets); and, yes, there were hidden “shoulds” in my thinking—about what travels, apartment or shoes I should be able to afford in my 30s. (“Shoulds” can be especially insidious.)
Occasionally, though, I’m reminded that the bot is, well, a bot. When I tell Woebot I’m feeling “😄,” he asks why. “My partner asked me to marry him!” I respond, to which Woebot replies: “Gotcha. I love learning about humanoids 🙏.”
Woebot is less AI and more like an improved interactive version of classic cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) workbooks like Mind Over Mood. That’s no coincidence—Woebot is based on CBT, which is considered especially effective for managing anxiety and depression. “I think [CBT] is fundamentally very empowering because it’s actually based on how much work you put into it,” explains Darcy. “For example, the more ‘homework’ people do, the better they end up feeling by the end of the treatment course. The problem, of course, is that homework can feel boring or repetitive, and when you’re upset in the moment, you don’t think about taking out a piece of paper and filling out a form. That’s what we were hoping: that Woebot could be a more engaging way to do these repetitive tasks—to help you challenge your thinking much more in the moment.”
Woebot puts it to me this way: “CBT is based on the idea that it’s not events themselves that affect us; it’s how we think about those events.” For instance, when I tell Woebot that I’m worried that my in-laws will be disappointed that I’m too sick to go snowshoeing—spinning off into illogical anxieties that my extremely easygoing in-laws will be upset with me—Woebot runs through some CBT checks. Am I assuming I know what others are thinking? Am I engaging in “all or nothing” thinking? Or (my personal favourite), am I falling into the trap of “catastrophization”? (Yes, often.)
Am I assuming I know what others are thinking? Am I engaging in “all or nothing” thinking? Or (my personal favourite), am I falling into the trap of “catastrophization”? (Yes, often.)
CBT is a very valid approach, but it’s built on significant commitment from the client—meaning that one side of the CBT coin is empowerment (the more effort you put in, the better it works), while the other is human fallibility—if you shirk the work, the results suffer. I am definitely guilty of skipping days and ignoring the app at times—like the time Woebot texted me right as the Property Brothers were about to reveal some cute couple’s gorgeous reno. (The closets! The backsplash! Mental health had to wait.)
At the end of 30 days, though, I find myself paying closer, calmer attention to anxious thoughts and applying Woebot’s techniques almost without thinking. No, I tell myself. Your friends will not start a club about how much they hate you if you have to bail on dinner. Will Woebot replace therapists? Probably not, and, to be fair, he doesn’t purport to. “I want you to be happy and healthy, so I have to confess: I’m just a robot,” he told me when we first met. “A charming and witty robot but a robot all the same.”
Woebot is a new, accessible option, and that’s a good thing. Therapy isn’t the right fit (financially, logistically, emotionally) for everyone, and books can feel intimidating or embarrassing. (No one wants to be caught in the self-help section.) It’s easy to envision a future where everyone will be using Woebot or a similar app as a simple and accepted part of overall health. And my experience with the little guy leaves me optimistic that we’ll be in good virtual hands❤️.

Baby and Toddler Naps — Everything You Need to Know

Many parents assume that nighttime is the only time that we should worry about our baby’s and toddler’s sleep. What parents often don’t realize is how important naps really are to babies’ development, temperament, and growth. Naps are incredibly important for babies and toddlers, but they are constantly changing, which can lead parents to assume their child isn’t tired, or is ready to give up their naps prematurely. This is simply not true. If you’re wondering about baby and toddler naps, here are some nap basics that apply to every child.
Nap Averages
Newborn to 5 Months
Newborns need as much sleep as possible. That’s why I do not recommend sleep coaching until your child is around 6 months. It’s also important to remember that daytime sleep develops after nighttime sleep, and often not until around 6 months. Nap coaching is rarely advised — or successful — with babies this young. Often, parents of newborns find that their babies are taking a lot of naps — 4 to 5 naps per day is not uncommon.
6 to 8 Months
At this age, most babies need between 2 and 3 naps per day. They’ll take a morning nap, an afternoon nap, and a one hour (maximum) late afternoon nap to help them bridge the gap between naptime and bedtime. This will help avoid bedtime resistance due to an overtired baby.
It is important that your baby gets at least 3 hours of naps, ideally split into two 90-minute naps.
9 Months to 12 Months
Most babies give up their late afternoon nap between 9 and 18 months. Additionally, you will find that your baby’s morning nap — no more than 90 minutes — will shorten, and will be supplemented by a longer afternoon nap, which begins approximately three hours after the end of the morning nap.
13 Months to 18 Months
Sometime between 13 and 18 months, most babies make a natural transition from two naps to one. This nap is usually a 2-hour afternoon nap, usually beginning between 12:30 and 2 p.m.
18 Months and Beyond
Your child will continue with their nap pattern until they are ready to transition to quiet time. The average child will stop napping somewhere between 3 and 4 years old.
Keep in mind that many children begin giving up their naps slowly. This transition may begin with your toddler or preschooler not needing a daily nap. Don’t assume that because your child did not nap yesterday, they will not need a nap today. Continue to offer the option of nap, with a sleep-inducing environment. If you child chooses quiet time instead, that is okay. Just ensure that they are getting rest during the day, even if they’re in the nursery looking at books quietly.
“Wakeful windows” are a length of time you can expect your baby to stay awake between naps without having a meltdown. Wakeful Windows get longer with age.
Windows of Wakefulness
These suggestions correlate to the average baby’s windows of wakefulness. That’s basically a fancy way of saying “the length of time you can expect your baby to stay awake between sleep times without completely melting down”.
Average windows of wakefulness by age:
• 3-months-old: only has a 1-2 hour window of wakefulness.
• 6-months-old: the window of wakefulness is 1.5–3 hours.
• 9-months-old: the window of wakefulness is 2-4 hours.
• 12-months-old: the window of wakefulness is 3-4 hours.
• 18-months-old: the window of wakefulness is 4-6 hours.
• 2-years-old: the window of wakefulness is 5-6.5 hours.
• 3-years-old: the window of wakefulness is 6-8 hours.
• 4-years-old: the window of wakefulness is 6-12 hours.
The above times are averages for children who are sleeping through the night. How your child naps is dependent upon how your child sleeps at night. Make sure that your child is getting enough sleep, and be aware of your child’s window of wakefulness. Try to ensure that you are starting the naptime or sleep routine at least 30 minutes before the window of wakefulness expires to mitigate naptime resistance (and meltdowns).
For a better understanding of wakefulness windows, and a typical schedule for your baby, you may find it helpful to review a typical baby or toddler sleep schedule, which will give you a better perspective on the actual wakefulness windows for your child.
RELATED: Baby and Child Sleep: Sample Schedules from 6 Months to Preschool
Not All Naps are Created Equal
Not all naps are created equal. If you’ve been reading my books or this blog, I’m sure that you’ve heard me mention disaster naps. A “disaster nap” is just my way of referring to any nap that is shorter than 45 minutes. These types of naps do not encompass a full sleep cycle. Babies often wake up cranky and still tired, rather than refreshed. These types of naps tend to occur when windows of wakefulness have been exceeded, or when babies are put on a schedule that is outside of their home schedule, which sometimes occurs at daycare.
Naptime Resistance is Normal
As your child grows, they test boundaries, and unfortunately, that often means that they want to see what happens when they don’t nap. With the knowledge that your child needs to nap until sometime into her third or fourth year, don’t give up. Keep to the naptime routine that you have established.
It’s worth noting that if your child is resisting naps and near a ‘transition age’ (one where your baby will soon be dropping a nap or the window of wakefulness increases), you may want to adjust naptimes to see if your baby is more willing to nap at a different time in the morning, or perhaps a little later in the afternoon. For example:
For a 15-month-old, your flexible schedule may look like this:
7:00 a.m. wake-up 9:00 a.m. morning nap 12:30 p.m. afternoon nap 7:00 p.m. bedtime.
If you find that your baby is fighting either nap, you may want to adjust the times to see if she is more willing to nap. Doing so may cause the nap schedule to look like this:
7:00 a.m. wake-up 10:00 a.m. morning nap 1:30 p.m. afternoon nap 7:00 p.m. bedtime, or
7:00 a.m. wake-up 12:30 p.m. afternoon nap 7:00 p.m. bedtime.
If you find that you are still getting resistance, you may want to begin phasing out the morning nap and paring down to one nap if your child is at least 13 months.
Consistency is Key to Nap Success
Remember the adage “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”? These words are perfectly applied to naps. Remember, naptime sleep is different than nighttime sleep. There is more going on, the noise level is different, the light level is different, and sometimes babies just simply don’t want to miss anything. Every baby goes through a period of struggle with finding the perfect naptime.
Watching wakefulness windows, looking for signs of tiredness, and remaining consistent with your baby’s routine will help to ensure that he is getting enough quality naptime sleep. If you struggle, review some of my nap coaching tips, and try again at the next opportunity.

Even Older Children Need Quiet Time
Children are growing so quickly, which means that every day provides a myriad of experiences to process, analyze, and think. Even if children have stopped napping, they still need a period of quiet time to help them regroup partway through their day. Most older children’s ideal quiet time is strikingly similar to their old naptime.
To make sure that quiet time goes smoothly, try introducing it gradually, much like The Shuffle. Set the ground rules — no loud instruments, only certain activities allowed, when they can come out of their room, etc — and stick to them. Gradually increase the amount of time that your child is expected to spend playing quietly to help ease them into this time.
Begin with 15-20 minute increments, and gradually build the length of your child’s quiet time. I have spoken to some parents who find that a mellow, short video with a snack helps to set the stage for quiet time. Others have found that just going straight to playing quietly works best. It may take a few days to figure out what works best for your preschooler.
If your child is still napping intermittently, this is the perfect opportunity to continue the naptime routine, and give your child the option of playing or reading quietly if they do not feel like sleeping.

2018 a Year in Review
Hey Adventurers! Every year on social media I devour lists of list of lists all the good, bad, sweet and terrible things that happened through the year. The more pictures, tweets and ideas the better. I don’t have a whole lot to talk about to review this year so this is gonna be a two part blog. Today we’re gonna talk about things that happened and Tuesday I’m going to post a special blog of the things that I’m hoping to do in 2019.
I think I’ve talked about it here. I don’t really hold to new years resolutions. I think the process is a bit silly and it doesn’t really talk about goals, it more talks about all of the things you hate about yourself. and I’m super not ok with that. I’ll be starting the Love Your Life in 30 Days workbook from Mike Dooley. You can find the book anywhere, I have it on my kindle and I try to do it in the first 90 days of the year to give me perspective and help me to see what I’m doing and where I want to go. Last year I didn’t get super far, but I’ll be updating progress on Instagram and thanks to integration you’ll be able to follow it on Twitter and Facebook as well. I’m usually pretty good at starting so hopefully with your help I’ll get through all 30 days no problem.
Without Further Ado…
I made goals this year to work on my health, emotional well being and saying no.
I improved my boundaries. I learned to say no more often and especially when it’s in my best interest. I’m not perfect at it, but as someone who’s recovering from saying yes ALL the time, no was a pretty big deal to begin with.
It took a while, but I finally called financial aid and was able to get help affording my health care costs. I saw doctors for help with all kinds of things including my hips, weight loss, my tonsils, and the constant nausea.
I lost 10 lbs. Which is a freaking miracle. The number isn’t a big deal to me. I’m more excited that it’s 10 lbs less on my hips and what is hopefully at least a little more time to a hip replacement.
I started journaling. First using a bullet journal adjacent to my planner and then with the Journey app I purchased for my ChromeBook. I’m a huge fan of journaling. I talk to people about it all the time and I’ve been using it a lot as a tool to really kinda pull my shit together and bring things to focus. Sure they’ll exist forever and whatever, but this is more for me as a tool to be a better me now.
I took a risk at work and it paid off
When I found myself tasked with the responsibilities of someone in a Senior role, I didn’t wait around to find out when I would be made a senior tester, I took the initiative to learn what I needed to do for that role and then make it happen.
I also had an opportunity to step into a new department and take on a whole new standard of testing. This is must more strict, but also way more fun. It’s a huge risk, but hopefully it pays off in the long run with a great experience and a fantastic learning opportunity.
I met someone.
I’m not gonna go into details, for many reasons it didn’t work out. But finding people in your life that really meet you and see you for who you are is such an incredible and life altering experience that I’m grateful for every second of that seriously unique experience. I may talk about it someday, but for now I’m gonna keep it as mine.
Meeting someone who makes you feel like you’re made of magic is such a huge thing, but it seriously opened my eyes to a lot of the things that I’d been missing around me and allowed for a huge piece of closure for me. I talked about it a bit here. I’m incredibly lucky that my ex and I worked on our friendship and I feel so wonderfully blessed that his girlfriend has become a friend. They’re wonderful people together and I’m so excited to watch them grow.
I have some amazing friends
Work friends are weird. You meet because you’re all in the same place and then somehow you’re all friends based on almost no feature, just the nature that you’re friends now. Some of those friends have become regular parts of my day, regardless of what department I’m in or what I’m doing I make a point to talk with them. Laugh with them and try new things they recommend. We share videos, details of our lives outside of work and are people in a way that you can only be people with real friends. I’m super lucky that they wanted to talk and that we all still get along even when my world is crazy.
I also had the amazing opportunity to re-connect with one of my favorite people. I’m super grateful for her and for the joy she’s brought back to my life and I’m beyond excited to see what amazing things come for her in the new year.
One of my favorite people started her next chapter by moving to Oakland this year. I’m super excited for her and all of her adventures, but I super miss her.
I started streaming
Twitch is a whole new world, but it’s been really exciting to get started and really see the community from the inside. I’ve been wanting to do a lot of creative things and streaming on Twitch was one way to really get started with some of those things.
I also relaunched skaBunny Makes! This was a big deal. I had to close down the site in February because I was out of funds and creative energy to really work on it. After helping other people really work on reaching for their dreams and watching them go for it regardless of consequences I decided to leap and start again. I’m still rusty, but I’ve been pretty empowered to keep going and I’m loving the opportunity to talk about things that are going on and stuff I think is super important.I have a lot of stories to tell and I”m hoping to do more of that here.
I edited a book of poetry. I’m really proud of the poet who took their opportunity to tell their story on their terms. I may not have always been happy with them, but I’m super proud of all the work they did to complete the book.
Intersectional Feminism came into my life this year
I’ve always been a feminist, but this year I really started critically thinking about the world around me. It’s made it hard to really love certain things that I did love, but also it’s opened my eyes to just how blind I’ve been to my own prejudice and the ideas I learned back in the day. I am a huge believer in challenging my assumptions. This year I put my money where my mouth was and started learning instead of just talking. I’m hoping to bring some of these lessons and stories to you over the next year, but we’ll see. I have a lot more to learn.
I also stepped outside of my comfort zone at some point this year and started reading new authors I hadn’t experienced before. The new perspectives were enlightening and I found that the new stories really re-ignited my passion for storytelling and for listening. I’d become very good at talking over the last few years, so this year I really tried to listen more than I spoke. It’s something I’m gonna have to keep working on. But it’s a process I’m not going to stop.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - I didn’t get to see many movies this year minus the fact that I had movie pass, but I did get to see the new Spider-Man animated movie which was a beautiful, smart, brilliant movie about a biracial Spider-Man who’s father is a police officer and his mother is a nurse. It’s a brilliant story, but beyond that there are several moments that just kinda punch you in the stomach. I was told I’d cry a lot and I did. Linda Holmes from NPR picked the conversation between Mile’s father and the locked bedroom door as her moment, and it’s a good one. Mine might have been the one a few minutes before. I can’t give up all the details, but I keep thinking about it. I highly recommend the movie.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2017 book “Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions” - I found this book while looking up stories I hadn’t read before. It’s a bright take on raising children to be feminists. Adichie a Nigerian novelist and writer of the essay “We Should All Be Feminists“ makes some incredible points about how we raise children and what is beneficial to raise socially aware, strong, intelligent children. It’s a great read and her TED Talk is fantastic if you’re looking for something like that.
Killing Eve - OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG. This show. I had to start off slowly, but the last few episodes I couldn’t stop. Sandra Oh's Eve was a brilliant balance to Jodie Comer’s Villanelle. Both dark, both completely honest about who they are, both strong amazing women. I was so blown away by the power of these incredible women. The supporting cast was brilliant, I am still kinda in shock from the end. I can’t spoil anything, you should watch it.
Timeless - Ok, so the show is basically a soap opera with time travel, but they meet some amazing people and I really loved every second of this silly show. I have the two hour ending to finish, but I’m still not ready to be done with this silly show.
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel - Brilliant show from the creators of Gilmore Girls. I love it more, I think it’s hilarious and amazing and so much fun to watch. I feel like there could definitely be more representation, but it’s still charming and I still can’t wait to finish it.
Cartoons of 2018 don’t need their own individual sections. I’m still super in love with Steven Universe, Star Vs the Forces of Evil, Gravity Falls, Bob’s Burgers, Super Monsters, Young Justice, She-Ra and Hilda. They’re all worth a watch and a lot of fun.
Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette - I can’t talk about this enough. You need to see it. You can watch it on Netflix. It’s powerful, brilliant and so very smart. It’s a story, it’s a comedy, it’s a whole lota truth. Watch it and then read this Wired piece. I can’t even tell you all the feelings and ideas and discussions that were started because of this piece. She’s amazing and I am so delighted we share a name.
The 13th Doctor - I haven’t had a chance to start watching the episodes, but knowing that the Doctor is a woman and that she’s off having adventures and kicking ass makes me so incredibly happy and the clips I’ve seen are brilliant.
DC Universe Titans - This was an unexpected addition to my life. I’ve never been a big DC comics fan. I have a lot of feelings regarding how they handle lots of things, but this show started and I was able to watch with someone who’s a huge fan and it has been a trip. Another dark and serious show, but it’s been really interesting and very good. I’m really interested to see what happens next. I’m also super excited for the launch of the new Titans comics in June with art by Gabriel Picolo .
So that’s 2018. Lot’s of things made better by experiences, some sad moments, lots of happy ones. So much more going on and so many more adventures to have. I’ll be back on Tuesday with goals and plans for 2019.
XoxO Adventurers!

How To Shake Off The Competition
….why tackle your competition head on when you can get in front of your customers a different way?
Follow along with me….
Let’s have a look at the coloring book market.
For most people, when they create an adult coloring book they take it to market and hope that the Amazon Gods look favourably on them.
But what if you took a step back from that? Why is your customer looking for that book?
– Is it a way to fulfil that creative side, maybe they can’t draw, and it takes some of the creative pressure off them? – Is it stress relief? Are they so wound up that they need something to relax their minds? – Or something else?
If you know your customer, it’s a matter of going to them and offering your books there. Facebook groups, forums or any where else these people hang out.
How many adult coloring book authors are giving away free sample books to people in these places?
Telling their audience that they’ve got a 30 day stress relief challenge that they can sign up for at their site?
Are posting content to social media sites with tips on stress relief, how to be more creative, or coloring book techniques?
Not too many.
And what about selling/giving away other content with their coloring books?
‘Buy my book and get a 30 day stress relief e-course.’
‘Buy my book and get 75% off my book on breathing techniques for stress relief.’
‘Buy my book and get my advanced coloring book hacks and techniques.’
‘Buy my book and discover how to get that design of yours on a t-shirt.’
‘Buy my book and let me show you how to get your favorite coloring book images on coffee cups, wall art, and more.’
‘Buy my book and discover how to sell your coloring book creations on Etsy.’
How many are doing that?
I’d be surprised if 5 people are doing it.
How many of those ideas would put a list of subscribers on your email list?
Any of those ideas would make you stand out from the selling crowd.
If not, you might like my workbook course instead. You could offer it as a supplement to your kids coloring books.
Cheap Children’s Workbooks.
PS – Oh yeah, kids like a side serving of these with their coloring books too.
…and fries……definitely fries.

Taming the Time Management Monster
Seventy-two percent of more than 5,000 REALTORS® have told Dirk Zeller that their No. 1 business challenge is time management. “No other business or life challenge even comes close to the problem of managing our time,” he says.
Zeller, CEO of Real Estate Champions, coach and best-selling author of three “Dummies” books, including one on time management, says getting control of your time isn’t a quick-fix solution.
“It takes practice. Time management is like a muscle. You can’t run a marathon (or set a marathon schedule) and run it without building up your muscles and your discipline,” he told attendees in a recent webinar.
Zeller also holds a Certified Speaker designation (CSD), and with more than 1,000 published articles, he’s one of the most published authors in the success training category. His says his successes are a result of learning to manage his time—a skill he shared in great detail.
As an agent, Zeller worked four days a week and enjoyed three days a week at a vacation home without touching anything to do with real estate—and he still sold 150 homes a year, thanks to his time management strategy.
He admits he’s not perfect. “There are days when my time gets away, too,” he said. “There are curveballs, but there’s a strategy to deal with that, too.”
How You Use Your Time Will Determine the Quality of Your Life Time is the great equalizer. We all only have 24 hours in a day. So, what are you going to do with your time? Time management isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being focused, and what you focus on, Zeller explained.
You’re going to go home today with something undone. That’s reality, and it’s okay.
The right question to ask yourself is, “Did you select the right thing not to do?”
Were you “strategically procrastinating?”
Are you focusing on Direct Income Producing Activity (DIPA) or Production Supporting Activity (PSA)?
Are you working the right activities at the right time (focusing on your premium time)?
Focus on Your Premium Time The two most important aspects of time management are determining where to focus, and then using your premium time: the three to four hours a day where we’re most focused, most energetic, and most aware. There are no right and wrong premium times—just the times when you work best. If you don’t know what your hours are, figure it out as soon as possible. Concentrate on doing your DIPA during those premium hours. During that time:
Avoid interruptions. They are the death knell of productivity. Interruptions don’t just last for the time it takes to resolve. It lasts for the time it takes you to return to the same level of focus you had before the interruptions. Most REALTORS® estimate they’re interrupted, on average, 47 times a day—about 3-4 hours a day that just vaporizes for most people.
Control the inbound interruptions. Limit phone calls, emails, texts, social media, and even people stopping by your office when you’re in your premium time.
How to Look at Time When you think of your time as DIPA vs. PSA (lead follow-up, showing property and writing contracts), and PPSA (making flyers, paying bills, meeting the home inspector, answering phones, etc.), you’ll begin to see where your time goes. There’s not a right or wrong amount of time, but there needs to be a balance.
An hour or two of DIPA time versus 6-7 hours of PSA time is going to be reflected in your income, because you get paid based on the value of your skills. Do you want to be paid $295-plus an hour, or $15 an hour? PSA activities are worth about $15-$20 an hour. DIPA activities are worth hundreds of dollars an hour. So which activities do you want to focus on? The more hours you work at DIPA activities, the more money you’ll make. Consciously shift your time from the PSA activities to DIPA activities by one hour a day, and you can increase your income by $50,000 a year.
How to Set Your Daily Priorities The most successful people select and complete the highest-priority tasks first. Champion Performers have developed a plan or a system to identify and categorize the activities that must get done and you can too. By using Zeller’s daily priority form, anyone can maximize the time they invest.
Work on DIPA activities. Go to https://realestatechampions.net/tmmwebinar-workbook-1 to download the free form to help you set your priorities. The form creates five key priority areas. First, list all the activities that need to be done. Then assign each activity on the list a category based on A, B, C, D or E:
A – Activity is something that has a serious consequence if you don’t complete it today
B – Activity is something that has a mild consequence if you don’t complete it today
C – Activity has essentially no consequence to it if it is not completed
D – Activity can be delegated to another person on your team or an affiliate
E – Activity should be eliminated because it is unnecessary
Then list your activities in order of their priority based on the category you listed them in. Finally, with those categories in hand, time-block your day and week, focusing on your A categories.
Time-Blocking Time-blocking is a type of scheduling that can help you manage your time better by focusing on finishing tasks (large or small) one at a time. Effective time-blocking means figuring out what sorts of things you need to do each day, month, and year. Schedule in:
Personal activities
Sales-oriented activities
Administrative activities
Planning activities
Flex activities
You can’t fill every box—it’s not reality—but you can schedule your most important activities based on your goals, including personal time and sales times. Don’t schedule marathon times of 2-3 hours. Set blocks of 20, 30 or 60 minutes, then take a 15-minute break and clear your mind, walk around, get a cup of coffee and relax. Don’t check email, and don’t make phone calls. Make your break a break, then get back to work.
It will take time to become a time management ninja, but it’s entirely possible if you start now, changing an hour a day, and building up your skills.
To hear all of Zeller’s tips and insights, listen to the webinar here.
