Dear Gus & Magnus,

After my dad died, I inherited a church pew from the Floyd United Methodist Church that Dad had apparently bought at some point. We kept it in the garage at the Randolph house, then we moved it to Ridgeway and kept it on the back porch. It's big and heavy. And uncomfortable -- we never used it to sit on as much as we used it to collect dust. We recently bought some proper patio furniture and so we planned to move the pew to the basement. But after lugging it halfway down the steps with Derek, I said, "Let's just carry it to the street." It was a liberating act.

That was yesterday. I figured it would get picked up fairly quickly because nothing stays on the curb long these days, but I guess heavy, uncomfortable church pews are an exception to that because it's still in front of our house.

Before I got home from work, Gus struck up a conversation with Margaret, who was walking by. Mom told me that just when Margaret was about to break free of the conversation, Gus said, "Don't you want to see how comfortable my bench is?" And she was nice enough to sit down with him and continue the conversation for a bit longer.

I'm thankful Mom took this photo. I can't think of a better way to document the pew's exit from our home -- and a sweet moment with our neighbor.
