Teammate One continued to scream and thrash against the restraints holding them to the gurney. It felt as if their blood was on fire and their skin was peeling off.

The soldiers wheeling them through the hallway were glancing uncomfortably at each other every now and again with Whumper taking up the rear.

"In here." Whumper directed, pointing to the room just ahead.

As they all entered single file through the door, the gurney wheeled between the two soldiers, Dr. Nova looked up from his microscope at the counter and turned to greet them.

"Ah, I see Teammate One is experiencing the enemy's serum…good, good. Place them there." He indicated the open space in front of the monitor and machines.

As the soldiers deposited the gurney with the still screaming and thrashing Teammate One, Whumper stepped up to Dr. Nova and handed over the dart gun.

"For the posterity of your work, you should know that they have two shots in their system. The first one didn't seem to be working effectively. That, or they just tolerated the pain a little to well."

"I saw." Dr. Nova indicated the security feed of the holding cells on his computer. "You simply did not give enough time for it to kick in is all." He drolled, though his tone held the faintest reprimand in it.

Whumper shrugged with an apologetic smile. "I'll leave you to your work, then, Doctor."

Truth be told Teammate One's screams, which hadn't let up yet, were beginning to grate on his ears. Not that Whumper didn't mind screaming in general, but it had already been several minutes now and he was bored.

Dr. Nova merely nodded as they injected something into Whumpee's Iv bag and walked across the large room, picking up the clipboard with Teammate One's notes from his desk, and began looking them over.

Teammate panted heavily, their eyes casting wildly about, their blood still on fire and their skin still feeling like it was peeling off their body layer by layer. Their throat was hoarse as they continued to scream out in agony.

"Yes…they truly manipulated my serum to be absolutely incapacitating…Tell me, what does it feel like?" Dr. Nova gently placed two fingers on Teammate One's pulse to assure themselves that it matched the monitor reading.

They mused mostly to themselves as they scribbled on the clipboard before going to the wall that housed a metal storage rack full of various vials and bottles and chemicals.

Plucking a small bottle from the middle shelf, taking next a few empty vials, Dr. Nova turned to the counter, opening a drawer and pulling out two clean syringes and removed one from the packaging. Their pace was unhurried despite Teammate One's obvious pain and they seemed rather unbothered by the continual screaming.

"This should counter it's effects, but first I need to draw some blood before I can administer it." Placing the instruments on a metal tray, he walked over to where the rolling cart was sitting and placed it on top.

Wheeling it over to their bedside, he picked up the needle and tapped with a finger to find a decent enough vein in their arm.

Teammate One's continued thrashing made it rather difficult, even with the restraints in place, but after a few minutes Dr. Nova was sure he was able to stick the vein as he quietly went about filling up the empty vials with his blood samples.

"Alright, hush now, I probably should have worn ear plugs for this." He mused as he prepared the antidote to the enemy's serum. Hopefully, it worked.

Jabbing it into their bicep he began cleaning up the tray and placing everything back in it's proper place, disposing of the packaging, and placing the blood samples on the counter next to the microscope for further inspection.

Teammate One began to slowly quiet down as the antidote started to take effect. The fire in their veins was beginning to cool finally.

Dr. Nova stood next to their bedside now that the screaming had stopped and they had begun to openly cry. "Walk me through the experience, Teammate One, what did it feel like? Use your words now."

They looked up tiredly, thoroughly exhausted and wanting nothing more than to sleep. But it still felt as if their skin was peeling off, itchy and uncomfortable to a degree they couldn't even begin to describe and it left them in tears.

"H-how is Whumpee?" They dared to ask while simultaneously hoping for information as to what Dr. Nova planned to do with them.

It seemed like the doctor was ignoring them at first as they put the clipboard back and sat at their microscope once more.

"They are recovering just fine. They are stable and resting, though I'm sure that aberration was due to a nightmare of some kind. It is common in subjects who have been through a psychological trauma." He half-answered, turning his back to Teammate One as they resumed their notes on their blood work.

"Interesting…" He murmured aloud, here and there as he continued to work the blood samples.

Teammate One had given up counting the styrofoam tiles on the ceiling and cataloguing every item on the doctors desk. Their skin still hurt and they needed a distraction.

2022/2023 Stash Clean Out

I decided to do a separate post for this, as I have a lot of expired products and items that I just don’t use or want to use anymore. I will be splitting this into 3 sections: Expired, Expired/Old Products that I Dislike, and Expired/Old Products that I Liked. Expired products are products that I have never opened and just went past their expiration date.

Expired

1. The Face Shop Ink Graffi brush pen liner: 02 Ink Brown 2. the Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer: 01 Clear Beige   - This was one of my favourite concealer back in the day. I bought this as backup and never got to using this as I just started using my cushions to conceal as well. This was also very inexpensive and matched my skin tone well. 3. the Saem Cover Perfection Ideal Concealer Duo: 01 Clear Beige   - I bought this because it was the same concealer but had the tip and stick which I thought would be handy, but never got around to using it. 4. celimax Underarms Brightening Pad One Step Body Brightening Pad 5. innisfree Wrinkle Science Spot Treatment Marine Double-Defense 6. Banila Co. sun+fic prime primer 7. 107 beauty Velvet Lift Cream Essence 8. 107 beauty Everyday Plump Hydro Cream 9. 107 beauty Chaga Jelly Low pH Cleanser 10. Anua 5-Zero Mild Sun Cream SPF 50+ PA++++ 6. essence extreme shine top coat 7. The Chemistry Brand Hand Chemistry   - This smelt kind of bad to me and it didn’t really moisturize my hands 8. Buxom Power Plump Lip Balm: Big O   - Was drying for my lips 9. Laniege Lip Glowy Balm: Pear 10. Kaja Mood Balm Color Change Lip Moisturizer: First Thing   - Was drying but did give a nice color 11. rom&nd Han All Lash Serum   - This irritated my eyes  12. all Natural Houttuynia Cordata Spot Solution   - Was an okay product but I have found something that does better 13. davines MINU hair mask   - This smells bad to me, to the point that I don’t want to use it anymore

Liked Expired & Old Products

1. Garnier Fructis Style Shine & Define Wax   - This was great when I had really short hair, pixie cut, and was really easy to use plus it smelled great 2. Tony Moly Mark Glitter Liquid Eye Shadow: 03 Moon Child Flash   - This was very pretty and the packaging is also really nice. Not sure if they still make this but I really liked it 3. A’Pieu Skinny Dual Mascara  4. Thank You Farmer Safe Sun Fluid age 0880 SPF 50+ PA++++   - I liked how this sunscreen applied and it was light-weight. I always had this in the back of my mind but I had to use other sunscreens before getting around to this one, which by the time I got to it was about 6 months before its expiry date 5. Hanyul Lip Balm: 03 Rice   - I liked how it applied and the color payoff was good too. It was moisturizing at times. 6. Laneige Water Drop Tinted Lip Balm: No.1 Pink Peach   - This was also another great lip balm with a light wash of color 7. Avance Lash Serum EX   - I started using lash serums when I started getting my lashes lifted and I stumbled upon this one which was pretty good. But I feel like a lot of the times these have more than enough product before it expires. But I only apply it at night. 8. mude inspire longlash curling mascara: Black 9. mude true eyelash serum   - This is my favourite lash serum and I have tried 3 other ones, but I just like this one the most so far. It is a little pricy, around $25-$30CAD. But I just like how the shape of the wand and plus I do see a difference in my lashes. Even my lash technician mentioned how my lashes seemed longer. 10. Maybelline Master Contour Face Contouring Kit: 10 Light to Medium   - I believe this was first ever face palette, I’ve wanted to declutter this on multiple rounds but couldn’t do it because it was a bit sentimental. However, it has gotten to the point that there is just so much fall out that I have to get rid of it and also to make room for possibly new items. But I really loved the highlight in the palette. The blush and bronzer weren’t bad but I prefer other ones more. 11. tarte Amazonia clay 12-hour blush: thankful   - This was part of the Sephora birthday gift. the quality and the color of the blush is great but it was a color that I never gravitated towards because it was too bright and pink for my liking. I think I may have another one that I’m just not ready to let go of yet. 12. By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water   - This had like black stuff at the bottom, but I did get a while ago but it hasn’t reached its expiry yet and it was always stored in a place without sunlight. It’s sad that I wasn’t able to use this as this is one of my favourite products.

That comes down to about 38 items I’m getting rid of, which isn’t too bad for the year. I have noticed that I do not really use face masks that often, and I still do have a bunch in my stash which I should try to cycle through them.

Just got home from my second chemical peel, which was a stronger version of the peel I got last time. Thoughts: 

If you want advice on writing opening lines, Zak “Actual Writing Major” Bird gave good advice. I find writing opening lines to be really similar to writing summaries, and you kind of have to play the same game with all of them.

I’m going to agree with basically everything he said, as I do the same thing - especially with the orientation, and then the cliffhanger. As Zak said, opening lines especially have to play many different roles. I tend to apply that ‘triple time’ rule to scenes, because I want every scene to play a plot/thematic/suspenseful/character-building role, but if you’re a better writer you can get it down to the lines. Here’s what I was typically trying to do with my opening lines:

1. Orient you in space and time. Where in the canon am I? Who is the point of view character? What’s going to be the problem we’re facing? This is doubly important because I tend to pretty much exclusively write AUs, so the first thing I want to establish is that it’s an AU. The BBC line establishes that Jon’s living at Georgie’s place pre-S3, and that something exciting’s about to happen that didn’t happen in canon. The NSBI opening line establishes that Jon is...living a happy domestic life, presumably with a teenager?. In Space Cadet, you get that this is when Melanie’s working at the Institute but...it’s boring? What’s going on?

(For a non-fanfic story, this kind of orientation would establish setting and character.  I also tend to do that, but it’s more important in fic that you’re grounded in where we are)

2. Establish that SOMETHING WEIRD IS HAPPENING??? My stories have a lot of ‘weird’ factor, or so I’m told, and I want the opening line to establish that. I often pull that ‘what the fuck is going on’ further into the story into the entire first scene, so I’m always hitting the ground running and waiting for the reader to catch up. Why is Jon standing over Daisy with a knife? What do you mean Martin’s the shadow director of the Institute? What does arson have to do with anything?! It’s a cliffhanger, and you’re already presented with this ‘question’ in the first line of the story. Evilcon’s a good example of a line that does 1 + 2: you understand immediately that this story is about Jon, who is probably a child in school, and that he’s having a very canon non-typical encounter with the supernatural. Same with Sucker’s Bet - the opening line brings up so many questions: we understand that we’re at a graveyard and probably not in canon, but Jon has a wife? His wife is dead? Why would it be a perfect day for a funeral?

3. Set tone. You can pretty much tell instantly from these lines which are comedy and which are not. The (relatively) serious ones start out with some kind of action or engagement - Martin’s walking down stairs, Jon’s waking up with a hangover, Jon’s standing over Daisy with a knife. In contrast, the more comedic ones kick off with a joke, some dialogue, or a relatively whacky moment. Crow’s Funeral is more thoughtful and atmospheric. My style of comedy is very machine gun and incessant, so when the story starts off with a joke and just doesn’t stop, then you know what you’re getting into. 

4. Just punchy. Don’t get too long, or too fancy, but make it sound good. I do typically try to get them to stand on their own in an interesting way. Maybe only half of them have particularly snazzy opening lines (which tend to get used in the synopsis), but typically I either open up the document with a snazzy line or a snazzy scene in my head. A lot of the time that’s all I got. 

Actually, I’d say that it’s super similar to writing synopses. A lot of these rules also apply to first scenes. I do remember a writing teacher when I was 20 telling me about a bunch of rules for opening lines but I don’t remember them. As usual I’m vibe based.
