You can start this side quest at the beginning of chapter 3 but I think it's pointless to even bother until after finishing the sand castle, since you can't enter the lab of Snakemouth Den until then.
Leif doesn't really change over the course of the story per say, his arc is simply about uncovering the secrets of his past the the mystery of his own existence. And there are only two real tragedies in life: not getting what you want, and getting what you want.
The ending always hits me though. Leif reuniting with and meeting his family for the first time chokes me up. It's also rather unique to see a story that has this subject matter of an existential crisis due to not really being the person you thought you were, but deciding to reclaim the identity and affirm its importance to you regardless. And I love how all the characters handle the revelation in their own unique way. Vi is such a little brat lol. Kabbu acknowledges how there's truly no frame of reference for what they're dealing with but assures Leif of his value regardless. And it's only through their friendship that Leif is able to reach the conclusion he does. We can also really see how Vi has changed since chapter 1 in these scenes.
Finishing this side quest provides unique dialog from Leif in the final chapter of the game. It's kind of weird how this side quest is technically optional. The story really feels diminished and incomplete without it.
I think Muze's dad is meant to be Leif's son. The developers have stated that Muse was with child when Leif was lost. I'm not sure what the timeline is meant to be, but I feel like it probably matches up.
I love the way Vi smiles when Leif compares Muse to her.
This game is so good.
