i am revising my 2024 writing goals as i exceeded the ones i set for myself earlier this yr

get 2–3 pitches accepted at publications i admire

my goal was 4 pieces out in 2024 but i’ve already hit that (uk arts magazine in print!!!, american newspaper, 2 online literary mags)…and i just submitted a draft on the wednesday that’s a piece for a us literary mag, also will be in print!!! so i think something like 4 pieces out in the first half of the year, 4 in the second half could be nice?

12–24 more substack posts, aka 2–4 per month, and posting to substack notes like 5x a week

earlier this year i set a goal of 2k substack subscribers (all free i haven’t turned on the option to pay money, and i don’t think i want to paywall anything anyway…it’s just not why i am writing? i have my other career to make money…)

but i’m at 3k ish now which is quite surprising, it feels like something about my writing is resonating with people and i had one article that went viral ish which helped. but you can’t guarantee or set goals around things like that! i suspect that if i keep on posting, i’ll get to 5k by the end of the year but who knows really. i’m trying to focus on the quality and quantity of what i write, rather than anything else

finish one really good personal/critical essay, make lots of careful revisions, and start submitting it around

this is my big summer project and i can’t tell how well it’s going bc it feels like such a complex project. i am going to at least commit to 2 very serious hrs a day towards working on it, 5 or 6 days a week.

i can’t tell if the pitching will distract me from this project. and if i should just focus on this plus the substack. haven’t decided yet.
