Do you have any recommendations as alternatives for TMBD? For me this has been my comfort series, one of which’s protagonist, setting and narrations I related to on so many levels and made me feel seen, especially the non-human and rejecting being human aspect, but after seeing your post and realizing the problems with the books (and author)’s attitude towards racism and ableism, as well as eugenics, it’s become clear to me this might not be something I want to emotionally invest in too deeply. I’m trying to look for something new but I don’t know how to find books with similar themes or focuses

It mostly depends, what are the specific parts of The Murderbot Diaries do you like best?

If you like the style of the narration, you may like this Public Domain story from 1960: The Lost Kafoozalum, by Pauline Ashwell. You will probably be astonished.

It's funny, it's got action, drama, and only one easily fixed flaw right at the very end. (you'll know it when you see it, and see why it's so easily fixed it may as well be a joke)

It is public domain, meaning it has no more copyright, so it's free to read at all times, and you can even publish it yourself or create continuations and publish those. Think of Dracula, Frankenstein, and most recently and famously, Mickey Mouse.

(Edit: You can now read The Lost Kafoozalum on the Internet Archive as well. It will probably take 30 minutes or so to load, but when it does you'll be able to listen to an automatically-generated audiobook too. I'm adding this link in when this post is 40 minutes old for the record, so it should be ready when this post is 2h old)

And I found that there's also more stories in this series, the first of which, Unwillingly to School, can be found in this book that you can borrow from the Internet Archive)

For one of the things Martha Wells read and was inspired by to create The Murderbot Diaries, there's The Imperial Radch series, by Ann Leckie, which is free to borrow from the Internet Archive.

It's everything The Murderbot Diaries wants to be but isn't because of Martha Wells' bigotry.

It's about many things. Gender. slavery. the right to self-determination. imperialism. and more.

It is much more...linguistically? complex than The Murderbot Diaries, though. TMBD is very light reading, and this actually requires paying strict attention. This mostly applies to the first three books, the two standalone novels are more relaxed.

Also my twin @walks-the-ages says that "everything I ever wanted from The Murderbot Diaries is actually in Transformers fanfiction and has been for decades". So they recommend literally just looking for Transformers fanfiction even if you haven't watched any Transformers.

If there's specific genres you like, I can try to think of other recommendations.

In general I just highly recommend checking out Project Gutenberg , Standardebooks, The Internet Archive, and Librivox.

Free books, audiobooks, and books you can borrow. Everything on Project Gutenberg, Standardebooks, and Librivox is public domain, aka no copyright, which means you can share and download as many times as you want and publish your own versions or sequels.

The Internet Archive also has a ton of public domain stuff, but also lets you digitally borrow books from their library.

yH ("Waiha") - Sentinel Surety Character Story

In another branch, on a less lonely moon... He is one of the 7 to 8 YoRHa models stationed at the moon base. Tasked to monitor, document and organize weapon stories he finds himself reading countless accounts of humanity's folly - much to the dismay of the easygoing Pod assigned to him who can't bring himself to scold him for taking far too much time.

Ashen Confidence - Light Staff Weapon Story

The Pod I work with behaves in weird ways. He keeps making references to a non-existent girlfriend - that I should hide her when he comes into the room. Why would he say that?

Working through archival data I understand it to be a customary greeting male authority figures use towards younger male relatives. For some reason they seemed to hold great pride in the relationships of their young.

I asked Pod who he thought my girlfriend was and he just replied he was joking and that I shouldn't take what he says so seriously. Another time I told him that I could just as well have a boyfriend but he ignored hearing me say that.

xH ("Exha") - Sentinel Shepherd Character Story

In another branch, on a less lonely moon... She is one of the 7 to 8 YoRHa models stationed at the moon base. Beloved by all of her colleagues she tries her best to fill their days with smiles. Though nobody has ever seen her work the disorganized Pod assigned to her has yet to scold her for any sort of laziness. In her private quarters, away from the other androids, she harbors secrets.

Ashen Alliance - Light 2H Sword Weapon Story

"She has brought over some cookies again." "I wonder how she has the time to bake for everybody. I can't even stop and eat between work units without Pod telling me off."

"Last month's report says she has the most work hours." "I don't believe it. I never see her work. If it wasn't for this Pod I would follow her around all day to know how she does it."

"She told someone off for trying to come into her room." "I tell you, she's hiding something in there. I'm pretty sure her room is bigger than ours, too. I bet she works with the Pods behind our backs."

Notes

I called them Shepherd and Surety because of JESUS CHRIST (no but really, if the cage contains "humanity's sin" then 10H died for our sins - she IS the savior)

I gave them pieces of Hina and Yuzuki's Mechanical Outfits, yH has Hina's sleeves and xH has Yuzu's belts and cape

xH's is also to some degree inspired by the YoRHa Girls 1.1a uniforms

I started these before 10H came out, so that's one of the reasons they barely resemble her uniform

Their weapons are Ashen versions of the respective Virtuous/Cruel weapons. I wanted to call them after the things Papa and Dark Mama 'provided to' Hina and Yuzuki (Confidence // Community -> Alliance)

I haven't decided yet if: a) Bebi is Babe's true form and he can't talk irl (=the Babe in the cage is actually just a dog talking) or b) Bebi is Babe's corporeal form and the dog can talk (=his voice is really deep) both are equally as hilarious to me

Initially I wanted to give them all the costumes 10H gets, but then EoS happened and now... welp

I don't really have a hang of xH's hair yet, it doesn't really look like how I wanted it to look and it's even harder to figure it out while also trying to evoke an existing art style - but I will keep trying!!!

Rendering is so fcking hard. How do people do it. I start and my brain just stops thinking and just does whatever and what I'm left with is a mess. I hope you still like it because I kind of don't, but without it it looks even less like the reinkane style

Only area left to do now is Ariandel. Seems like I could rush Freide without having to go through the whole area but I’m gonna wanna check for added content anyways

Despite the MLGS looking so cool, its actually weaker than the Aquamarine Dagger in my experience in so far

Found more weapons with unique movesets, Alonne’s Sword uses Freide’s scythe swings in 2h, does the Black Blade R2 into a fast UGS swing (if you buff with the WA the Shimatsuken does a Black Serpent pyromancy)

Chikage is actually nothing like Chikage and is a paired weapon of Chikage and the transformed version which uses the cut WA from Onikiri and Ubadachi. Beast Cutter actually has its moves, of all things, pretty sad they couldn’t do the same for other bloodborne attack animations.

Thorned Greatsword is a greatsword with a UGS moveset, complete with lightning spear sword beam

Trial of Perseverance is too hard, enemies hit way too hard for how aggressive they are, you pretty much have to use an ultra weapon to avoid getting overrun and are constantly backpedalling. Enemies constantly respawn a la Old Dragons from Sekiro, but I was hoping it’d have been more like SW Jedi Fallen Order where there was a fix amount of enemies so you could slowly push the offensive. Interesting mode though

Of the 10 waves, I’ve never made it past Wave 2

They seem to have a suggestion box so I’m gonna do a write up and send it somewhere that they’ll hopefully read when I finish my first playthrough. They locked a lot of rings

Literally everything about this game is more DS2, right down to things like including Red Crystal Lizards

For including BB items, the Hunter Set isn’t in the game, really baffling.

Spells have an increased effect once you totally max their upgrades (which involves rechallenging bosses with special global debuffs of your choosing)

Loyce Set is in the game, but no Loyce Sword, very upsetting.

Rings are like DS1/DeS levels of powerful, and some with up to +3 variants (Chloranthy +3 is +50 sta/s, normal speed is 45/s, +3 in vanilla is like +12 lol, for example, but you need it with how much more stamina you use in this mod)

Halflight’s goons are total cunts that can poise with just painting guardian set somehow and have like 10k hp, you wouldn’t even normally play this in multiplayer I don’t get why you’d make this this way.

NG+ exclusive enemies are a thing, as well as a separate mode that adds extra minibosses to certain areas.

Some areas are stupidly densely packed with enemies lacking in forethought of enemy placement you’d get in the vanilla game. Archives bridge is like Boletaria bridge on crack. I find it really insulting that some areas are setup that taking damage is inevitably no matter how well you try to play, and I feel the same way about passive poise vs invaders with fast weapons and spellcasters.

All in all, still would highly recommend for being able to replay bosses whenever, but hope that they sharpen some of the edges on the product
