just finished the game
botw and totk shouldve released together as a packaged deal to make it worth the total $70, like a chapter or part 1 and 2 kind of thing. i get making games takes time and you cant please everyone in the corporate world but still
gripes. annoyed you can’t find and wear gerudo vai clothes anymore, peeved they saved the data of your horses but not all your clothes, and the items you’d hung up on the walls of your hateno house (they honestly couldve just had bolson hold onto your stuff in storage for your newly bought house in totk). Ticked they didnt transfer over the data from your shiekah slate compendium to your purah pad, link should already know what all/most of the edible food stuffs, creature ingredients, and monster parts are if youve played botw on the same device.
something i hated but this extends to most japanese games: i wish we could skip cutscenes especially if they were the same animation x5. also didnt like the way they introduced the tutorials via shrines, mainly boring and sometimes frustrating. went into two of the temples not realizing i needed the characters to be there and say their dumb little comments before activating them. very handholdy and feels like theyre talking down to you, not trusting you to make the conclusions on your own/can’t pick up on where the designers are pointing to or where they want you to look or go
HATE HATE HATE how they made the dark skinned great fairy hypersexual that says innuendos constantly, double hate how some npcs have light lips that look a little too similar to jim crow art, its 2023, jesus fucking christ.
wish you could just summon the sage’s wills through a wheel or assigned buttons like in botw, having them out like that was clunky and the ai was not fun to work with especially the mecha and riju, turning em off is an option, and running around the same monsters all the time that riju and sidon can kill in 2 or 3 hits is also an option.
wish the depths were more spooky/scary or atleast darker in themes, more stuff to interact/look at, Something. skeletons laying around everywhere, gibdos even, maybe apparitions of the lost souls standing or laying around or in a fighting pose idk the entire place was pretty big but bland/lacked character. that can also be said for the sky islands too really.
storywise, it wouldve been cool to see past heroes and princesses coming together and teaching link and zelda stuff alongside rauru and sonia’s powers. wouldve been way more interesting to see the different heroes’ journeys and how they defeated their version of ganon/related event (that would then contribute to how to better defeat our ganon?) in times past, rather than the rehashed cutscenes with the powerstone holders or whatever getting decimated from each of their perspectives
the ganon fight cutscenes made me wish we were playing that game instead of running around looking for zelda. i did like the game, but only in the sense that i liked the artstyle, the ascend ability and the fact that the roads, strongholds, and towns feel a lot livelier. and i really liked the end fight with ganon, that was tense and fun (personalized opinion since i didnt have enough sundelion meals and was on 1 heart before the transition to the dragon fight); a major step up from botw’s ganon fight

part 4: turning over a New Leaf
New Leaf brought a MAJOR change to the Animal Crossing formula, where as in previous games the player moved into a town with the simple goal to make friends, in New Leaf the player is declared as the mayor of the town. As mayor the player is given much more control of the town, from getting to choose where their house is built to in-acting ordinances. Public works projects allow the player to fund outdoors decorations for the town to customize the landscape.
Numerous buildings were also added to the game further decorating the landscape.
the Roost: the coffee shop also seen in Wild World that is now an independent building form the museum.
Retail: the recycling shop where you can sell items to Reese and have furniture customized by Cyrus.
the Plaza/town tree: a plaza (duh) with a thee planted by the player upon their arrival which often hosts festivals and merchants.
the Island: a small island that Tortimer retired to which also appeared in the game cube games.
Tumblr media
The following new locations are found on mainstreet, an evolution of the city from City Folk. below is a map and a description of each new building from left to right:
Katrina's Store: the fortune tellers shop. Katrina can also be seen visiting the town in the plaza before her shop is open.
the Dream Suite: allowing players to visit each others towns without needing multiplayer by "freezing" the island in a dream that anyone can visit.
Club LOL: a night club run by Dr. Shrunk where the player can watch his standup and party with DJ KK.
Nook Homes: allows the player to customize the outsides of their houses and upgrade their homes with help from Tom Nook.
Nookling Junction: Run by Timmy and Tommy while Tom Nook works in nook homes this is the reincarnation of Nooks Cranny from previous games.
Gardening Store: run by Leif the store sells flowers and tree starters, once Nookling Junction is upgraded the shop merges with T&T Mart.
Kicks: a shoe shop run by Kicks.
Tumblr media
In the new game 125 new villagers were added to New Leaf, including two new species, hamsters and deers. This lead to a total of 335 villagers with each of the eight personality options having their own voice pitch! (its really hard to succinctly explain animal crossing dialog, just play one of the games) New Leaf also added 12 more bugs and fish for a total of 72, as well as the addition of deep sea diving.
New Leaf was the fist game released online through the Nintendo e-shop. This was advantageous to Nintendo as a year after the games release, in 2016, they added a free addition to the game Welcome amiibo. The add on would be available through the e-shop making it more accessible to players.
There is alot of merchandise released for this game, most of which is still available now. A few of my favourite items are the sticker book and plushies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this game also introduced isabelle, who i love soooo much for obvious reasons.
the entire history of Animal Crossing part 1:
In roughly 1986 Katsuya Eguchi moved from Chiba where he was raised to Kyoto where Nintendo headquarters were located. Eguchi found this move very difficult as he felt isolated in the much larger city but this loneliness would help him realize the importance of spending time with friends. Eguchi also had a harder time connecting to his wife and children as he was working late as a level designer on Super Mario Bros 3. He found that playpen video games over the same save files was a way for him to bond with his family despite their different schedules.
Eguchi would later take these experiences as inspiration as he, Hisashi Nogami, and Takashi Tezuka, directed the first Animal Crossing game (full tittle Animal Crossing: Population Growing or Dōbutsu no Mori) in 2001. The game was developed for the 64DD add-on to the N64 and was eventually released on a standard N64 cartridge. By 2001 when the game was released the N64 was declining in popularity as it was an expensive system and the game would be adapted for the GameCube (the tittle for the adapted GameCube version is Dōbutsu no Mori+).
The game itself followed the player as they move to a new town and befriend the six animal villagers influenced by Eguchi’s life. The game also used a unique file sharing system where each cartridge would only hold one town and multiple players would exist in the same village, a now infamous aspect of the series also inspired by Eguchi’s life. The game also worked off of a real world clock, which was very difficult to run on the N64 but allowed for multiple players to visit the village within one day and celebrate real world holidays in game. Although very open ended, the player is required to work for the local shop keeper Tom Nook to pay back a mortgage of 19,800 Bells (the in-game currency) and then incurred to continue working for Nook to upgrade their house.
Dōbutsu no Mori+ successful enough to garner a world wide release, released in North America on September 16, 2002, Australia on October 17, 2003, and Europe on September 24, 2004. The versions released outside of Japan were localized for western audiences, which would become one of Nintendos largest localization projects to date. Due to the efforts made by the localization team the western version of the game was rereleased in Japan as Dōbutsu no Mori e+ (the e does not stand fro English….).
Fun Fact: Dōbutsu no Mori (the N64 version) was released in China in 2006 for iQue Player. If you’re thinking “what the fuck is a iQue Player” you’re in for a story. The iQue Player was a hand held version the the N64 created by Nintendo and Taiwanese-American scientist Wei Yen as a way around Chinas bans on home video games as to prevent Nintendo games from entering the black market.
To company the games release Nintendo issues e-reader cards. These cards could be scanned and lead to intake outcomes, the outcome of a card depending on the card's type. Cards could be scanned the e-Reader on the Game Boy Advance by itself or, in Animal Crossing and Doubutsu no Mori e+ only, in-game by connecting a GBA with an e-Reader to the Nintendo GameCube.
I do not have a copy of this entry to the Animal Crossing series but below are images of the different releases of the game and its translation and my collection of e-reader cards

An update and RUMBLE WEEKEND!!
Hey everyone!
Its been a long time since I've posted to this blog but that's because I've been buisy getting life stuff sorted! My post-grad work is chugging along, I got a new job in my field and I'm learning to drive about 10 years late! But I've been playing a ton of pokemon in the mean time! I've got some full odds hunts in generations 3 and 4 on the go to get some fun playthroughs in before bank shuts down (Maybe in April?).
Tumblr media
Fig 1. Full odds hunts for Spheal/Snorunt in RSE and Chimchar in platinum!
My luck with full odds hunting has been atrocious until the day of writing this post though. I've put the gen 3 hunt on hold because I was overcome with an urge to play Platinum again and do some pokeradar chaining so I expanded out to 3 consoles and took up soft resetting for Wimpod on the side in Sun.
Tumblr media
Fig 2. Triple hunting Chimchar (My resets for Wimpod were done on the black and blue 2DSXL in the pile) ((I also cleaned up my desk finally, feels good))
Unfortunately I passed odds on Wimpod and a soft reset caused my 2DS to freak out and delete the entire game install, fortunately I was juuust in the time window to redownload it from the eShop so I'll pick it back up again some day! Until then though, the hunt for Chimchar continues.
I've also been slowly building up a collection of retro junk that's fun to tinker with! Meet my new CRT and VHS setup! (I'll get a tv unit for it the second I find an era appropriate one!)
Tumblr media
Fig 3. He just wants his swamp back
While we're on the topic of retro tech, let me tell you about my favorite latest project! My roomie had a spare wii that he didn't want so I took it, soft-modded it and dressed it up in a pretty see through shell!
Tumblr media
Fig 4. A top down view of the console and its first stickers!
Tumblr media
Fig 5. A side on view of the transparent shell
I've been using this puppy to catch up on all of the gamecube and wii games I've missed, mostly Colosseum, Gale of Darkness and Resident Evil stuff! However there is one other thing I've been loving~ Pokemon Rumble and its fan mod, Weekend Edition! The mod adds in gen 2 and 3 pokemon that were missing from the base game and there's even a roughly quarterly shiny hunting event called Rumble Weekend where you only hunt in Rumble! The odds are roughly the same as the gen 3 and 4 games (1/8192) but the encounters fly by so fast that shinies feel relatively common.
I participated for the first time this weekend and after only an hour or so of playing I had my first two Rumble Weekend shinies!!
Tumblr media
Fig 6. My first Rumble shiny!! A beautiful, healthy Manectric
Tumblr media
Fig 7. My second Rumble shiny! A lovely Ourple Swampert!
I wanna try and play more next Rumble weekend but I'm so happy to finally break my shiny drought with two gen 3 gems!! I plan on posting more now that I'm transitioning to a new job with a much less chaotic schedule, see y'all around! <3
