A woman in her 50s was critically injured after being hit by a lorry in north London in the early hours of Monday. The incident occurred at the junction of Bounds Green Road and Wood Green High Road at 12.25am. Another pedestrian, a woman in her 60s, also sustained injuries in the collision, though they were deemed non-life-threatening or life-changing. One of the lorries involved did not stop at the scene, prompting a search for the driver, while the driver of the other lorry was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs. Road closures have been put in place, causing disruption in the area. The injured woman was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries, and her exact condition remains uncertain as she continues to fight for her life. Meanwhile, the second pedestrian involved in the collision, a woman in her 60s, suffered injuries that were described as non-life-threatening or life-changing. The driver of one of the lorries involved in the incident did not stop at the scene, leading authorities to launch a search for them. On the other hand, the driver of the other lorry did stop at the scene and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs. In response to the collision, road closures have been implemented in the area around the junction of Bounds Green Road and Wood Green High Road. These closures have caused disruptions in the surrounding area as authorities work to investigate the incident and clear the scene. As the investigation continues, witnesses are being urged to come forward and assist the police with any information they may have regarding the collision. Dorian Lynskey assina um interessante artigo no The Guardian sobre o fim dos tempos. Ou, para ser mais rigoroso, sobre as frequentes sensações de se estar próximo do fim do mundo, ou de um fim do mundo talvez, e sobre a proliferação de histórias sobre estes temas nos últimos anos - algumas com o mundo a acabar de forma literal, como Melancholia (spoiler alert) ou o recente Don't Look Up (idem), outras apenas com a sociedade a terminar tal como a conhecemos, mas com o planeta a seguir o seu caminho (The Last of Us, Station Eleven). É uma reflexão muito interessante sobre estas tendências.

Este será o primeiro de dois artigos de Edward Zitron que trarei aqui hoje. Este, o mais recente, aborda o tema quente da IA generativa a partir de uma entrevista recente e exasperante da CFO da OpenAI, Mira Murati. A tese de Zitron é simples: a IA generativa poderá bem ser um hype sem fundamento, pois aquilo que esta tecnologia faz neste momento não é assim tão útil - e, mais relevante, não é assim tão valioso (ou pelo menos não suficientemente valioso para justificar a valorização multimilionária da OpenAI e os milhares de milhões de dólares que a Google, a Microsoft e outras empresas estão a derreter nisto). Como tal, Altman, Murati e outras figuras tentam falar menos do que a sua tecnologia faz e mais do que aquilo que poderá - ou não - vir a fazer um dia. Como o autor também conclui, daria imenso jeito uma imprensa mais crítica perante estes discursos. E nem vamos entrar no buraco negro ético dos dados utilizados para treinar estas máquinas...

O segundo artigo de Zitron que li nesta semana foi este, que vem muito na linha de imensa coisa que o Cory Doctorow tem escrito nos últimos tempos (a teoria da enshittification, que aliás é referida no texto): a internet tal como a conhecemos está a morrer às mãos da ganância corporativa, da IA generativa (em modo IA Habsburgo, numa imagem especialmente feliz), e da "Search Engine Optimization", tornando as pesquisas progressivamente mais ineficazes à medida que os resultados são mais e mais "conteúdos" genéricos, artificiais e inúteis. É uma tendência que já vemos hoje, e que para mal dos nossos pecados só tenderá a acelerar.
