In 1778, George Washington signed this loyalty oath while camped at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. These oaths of allegiance were taken by Continental Army line and staff officers.
The U.S. Army was established #OTD in 1775.

And the Army went rolling along.
Minute men, from the start,
Always fighting from the heart,
And the Army keeps rolling along.

As someone who has a father who was in the Marine Corps, along with two of his best friends, as well as a great-grandpa who was a Navy Commander, and two Uncles who served in the Army, thank you to those who serve our country. You are the reason that our freedom was established all those years ago. Thank you. As for the Marine Corps, Happy 249th Birthday. Your birthday is tomorrow, as well as those who served within, their other birthday. Happy birthday. Semper Fidelis.

Happy 249th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps!
In honor, here's a photo of a @USMC Douglas SBD-5 on bombing mission against Japanese targets on Rabaul, April 22nd, 1944.
Although, as far as I know, this isn't a photo of my grandfather, who served as an SBD gunner, he served as a Marine with the VMSB-244 at this time, but I haven't been able to find the units War Diary’s for the month of April.
Marine aviators flying the SBDs pioneered many new tactics during these years. The most impressive of which, in my opinion, were Close Air Support missions attacking target just outside the perimeter of their own airfield, supporting the Marines on the ground protecting the airfield.

Happy 249th Birthday to our U.S. Marine Corps from a Proud Marine Corps Veteran!
"In every battle since the birth of our Corps Marines have acquitted themselves with distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term Marine has come to signify all that is highest in soldierly virtue." - Gen. LeJeune

16th December - Jane Austen’s birthday
Today marks Jane Austen’s 249th birthday. A bit about Jane Austen - she was born in Steventon, Hampshire to George and Cassandra. She was one of eight children. During her life, she published four novels anonymously. After her death in July 1817, her brothers posthumously published her final two novels, revealing her identity as the author.
She is revered as one of the greatest writers of all time, and her work is respected worldwide. In 2022, I had the pleasure of visiting Jane Austen’s House in Chawton, Hampshire. This is the house where Jane spent the final 8 years of her life and where it is believed she wrote her novels. The house exhibits decoration and furniture of the time, but most exciting are the original pieces believed to belong to the Austen family, including a writing desk that belonged to Jane, where she may have penned her novels. The house also displays first editions of her novels and and a turquoise ring worn by Jane in her youth.
