his head dips down some to accommodate the newfound weight 'pon his shoulders where it's normally only carrying the weight of his own skull and brain, let alone a brainless idiot's recklessness and affection. "I say we get a drink, call it a day. We don't normally get this sort'a quiet. I'm almost tense." almost, not quite. he knows when not to look a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak.

"Honestly, I'm──" he goes to answer truthfully at first; he's so tired. he hasn't felt this tired in a long time, and it's a bone deep ache that settles into muscle, tendon, bone, even his spirit feels this. he's so tired, and yet he keeps moving because he has no other choice. he can't tell that to vash. ( poor guy would whine about self care, like he had a place to talk. ) "...forget it. Let's go get a drink somewhere."

"Knives," he corrected irritably. He loved his brother, truly. And he was glad Vash had seen sense, had accepted what needed to be done and come with him. But the least he could do was use Knives' chosen name. "My name is Knives, Vash. Use it."

A breath, as he tried to wrangle the anger down and away. It wasn't fair of him to be upset with Vash really. He was new to this–he'd spent the last five years trapped and being led astray by the humans. Led deeper into their madness. He'd need time to get used to the new way of things, to get used to addressing Knives by the name he'd chosen instead of the name she'd used–just. Time.

Knives could forgive him for the mistakes until he'd adjusted and gotten used to this new life. He was here, that was the important part.

He stopped, turning back to his brother to set hands on his shoulders as he leaned in to press his forehead against his brother's. "It's alright. It's fine, Vash. We're fine. We'll be fine." He hummed quietly, the tune half instinct, familiar to both of them. He couldn't remember if he'd learned it from Vash or if he'd always known it but it didn't matter–it'd always helped Vash calm down before so it should work now.

"I'll protect you, okay? That's what this is all for. To keep you safe. You and all our sisters. I'll protect all of you, no matter what. Trust me."

As for where they were going... Zazie, he supposed. The worms should be easy enough to find again, even if it had been awhile since Knives had seen them last. They'd surely be willing to take him in again and his brother, and from there he could ensure Vash's safety while he began his work with the Doctor in Julai. Vash didn't need to be a part of that; he could stay safely with Zazie, away from humanity. Away from things that might hurt him. Knives would only involve him when he needed him.

          Sitting on his hands long enough, gnawing on his bottom lip and sweating brow to chin, Vash finally spoke. "Nai," he started off, eye contact trained on his twin who was leading the way a few feet ahead. The back of his head was all Vash could see, and all he could see for the past few hours. He didn't know where they were going, what they were doing ─ he was totally left in the dark. "Can we talk?"

          Such a shaken, worried tone for such a dull, easy question. It couldn't be helped, and who could blame him? ( Besides himself. ) The silence brought no comfort. Perhaps his brother already knew what he was going to say. Vash felt extremely predictable, and extremely tiresome. "Are.. are we going to be alright?"

          With a notable emphasis, apprehension displayed clear across his face plain as day. The life Vash would now tread was promised with bloodshed, unfairness; the slaughter of the 'innocent' before his very eyes made that abundantly clear. If the death of a few parasites was all it took for Vash to see Knives' vision, how many would it take for the entire world to see it? The thought alone made his heart race, intense nausea overcoming him. "Nai, if we're going to be at this for God knows how long, the least you can do is talk to me!"
