Laurent Garnier - 33 Tours Et Puis S'en Vont - I keep thinking I don't particulary like techno, but I like this a LOT (though I suppose it's actually "progressive tech house"?)
Laurent Garnier is one of electronic music’s best-known acts, a pioneering household name responsible for decades of clubland classics. From experiencing the acid-house movement first-hand as a DJ at The Haçienda through to timeless hits such as the breakout ‘Crispy Bacon’ and the enduring ‘The Man With The Red Face’, his tireless enthusiasm has permeated the dance music landscape via six celebrated albums, numerous singles and a relentless touring schedule.
On ‘33 Tours Et Puis S’en Vont’, Laurent Garnier’s first solo LP in 8 years and his most dancefloor-oriented yet, a total mastery of House, Techno, and beyond is on full display. Club-leaning cuts from ‘Liebe Grüße Aus Cucuron’ through to ‘Granulator Bordelum’ all distil his years of warehouse, club, and festival experience into thrilling expressions of musical tension and release. Vocal-led tracks tastefully borrow from a range of genre influences; from the Hip Hop inflected ‘In Your Phase’with 22Carbone, an incendiary number that will be firmly burnt into the memory of any attendee of Garnier’s recent DJ sets, to the Punk of ‘Saturn Drive Triplex’, which features vocals from the late Alan Vega, of influential duo Suicide notoriety. Elsewhere, sprinklings of broken rhythms appear in the leftfield downtempo cut ‘...et puis s’en Va!’ and Drum & Bass experiment ‘Sado Miso’, offering listeners a further view into his wide-ranging taste. Across 2022, Garnier released five EPs, each containing a special hidden code referencing a fairground ride from his childhood, alluding to the album. Now presented through various mediums.

I have chosen to look at the manufacturing and distribution of cell phones. Both a positive and a negative of cell phones is the constant development of them.
Every year we see new models of iPhones or Samsung Galaxy's’ being developed by their respective companies, with only the minimum amount of technological advancement in the new phones compared to older models. So while the difference between an iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 is miniscule, due the the nature of human desire and people convincing themselves that they need something, we constantly upgrade to these newer models. This desire for new products is further encouraged by cell phone companies who include in built obsolescence into their products, forcing consumers to upgrade.
This constant loop of buying a new phone and then throwing it out for a slightly better model has had many repercussions on the world around us. In a single year more than 152 million phones are thrown away, being one of the largest contributors to landfills and in turn, climate change.
Not only are cell phones resulting in environmental issues but also social problems. Cell phones companies regularly use sweatshops and child labour to mass produce their products due to the low cost, or they get they get their raw materials from conflict mines. Rather than using their position of influence to support ending child labour and conflict mines, head people of these technology companies would rather spend less money so they can go home and buy another private jet.
This is due to human’s being greedy. It is within our nature to want more, justifying that we need it. Human needs are simply food, clothing and shelter. We don’t need all these materialistic items but yet this was how we were raised, with a innate desire to want more. Some could say this this is the nature of Capitalism, but even if we were to change to different social structures such as Communism, the same would apply. Those at the top would want more than the rest, making it so they were more equal then others as said in Animal Farm. So at the heart of it all, the assumption that we need more, that we need the newest model of cell phone, has lead to humans exploiting others and the world around them for their own benefit. Yet, even if we try to change, that innate desire will still haunt us for many future generations to come.
