Nutrients During Pregnancy

Micronutrients

Recommendations:

-be mindful of folate, vitamins B12, C, D ,A, calcium, zinc, iron, sodium, iodine

-prenatal multivitamin and mineral supplements are recommended with good diet

-over 90% of pregnant women from a 2020 study were deficient in calcium. iron. zinc, and folate

Folate:

-is required for cell division, critical in first 28 days for neural tube development

-400ug/day for sexually active women, 600ug/day for pregnant women

-reduces the risk for neural tube defects.

Vitamin B12:

-regenerates the active form of folate

-2.6ug/day during pregnancy

Vitamin C:

-production of collages/connective tissue, deficiency = preterm births -85mg/day during pregnancy

Vitamin A:

-needs increase by 10% in pregnancy to 770ug/day

-excess performed vitamin A can cause fetal abnormalities, heart/facial defects

-supplementation not recommend because it may become toxic (excludes betacarotene)

Calcium:

-same for pregnant/non-pregnant women 1000mg/day

-calcium absorption is more efficient in pregnancy

-Aim for 1,000 milligrams daily

-Calcium is key to help your baby build strong bones, teeth, muscles and nerves.

Vitamin D:

-Recommended amount doesn’t increase in pregnancy, supplementation advised if sunlight exposure or milk consumption is low

-prenatal vitamin supplements of 10ug/dose

-excess can cause developmental disabilities in newborns

-It helps calcium do its job and keeps your immune system strong

-You should get 600 IU daily.

Iron:

-increased need for red blood cells increases iron need by 50% to 27mg/day

-You need nearly twice as much iron during pregnancy, or 27 milligrams daily

-Iron is the mineral used to make more blood that carries oxygen to the fetus

-fetal need for iron increases in third trimester

-iron supplements are prescribe during last 2 trimesters

-iron stores of mother are depleted to support fetus, so anemia is common

Zinc:

-critical for making proteins, DNA, RNA, protein synthesis

-needs increase 38% during pregnancy to 11mg/day

Sodium:

-needed for fluid balance, same for non-pregnant women is 1500mg/day

Iodine:

-need increases a lot to 220ug/day, can come from salt

-it promotes brain and nervous system development

DHA:

-An omega-3 fatty acid, DHA plays a role in your baby’s brain and eye development

-You need 200 to 300 milligrams per day.

Macronutrients

Energy (Calories)

-An additional 350-400 kcal/day is needed in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters

-Nutrient dense foods are essential for all nutrients to be obtained while calorie intake is met

-maternal dietary intake is a modifiable risk factor for adverse outcomes, and both dietary excess and inadequate intake can be problematic

-many pregnant women are overweight or obese, but lack adequate protein and fat intake

Proteins:

-1.1g/day/kg of body weight (additional 25g/day of protein)

Carbs:

-at least 175g/day of carbs

Fat:

-% of calories from fat shouldn’t change

-fat is needed by the newborn for energy and temperature regulation

-consume rich sources of DHA, an omega-3

Fluids -increase to 3L/day for increased maternal blood volume, temperature regulation

-for production of amniotic fluids to protect and cushion the fetus

-combats fluid retention, constipation, UTIs

It’s a good day to be alive.

I’ve jut returned from an Easter weekend in London. Tripped with Aj and his friends for the first time, 220ug of absolute madness. However, despite being in a wholly unfamiliar environment,  I felt an amazing wash of contentment over myself as I realiased I am incredible happy where I am in life. I have no complaints, I’m not homeless, addicted to drugs, broken or sad. I’m a little worried about what path I might choose to go down but I am fundamentally content.

Despite this, I just forgot my fucking surface on the Eurostar!! So I’ll be up early to hope it turns up. Life happens, & it stops for no man!
