Pitch Me your thing!
HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.
So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.
NOW WE’VE GOT SOME RULES FOR DOING THIS (which I mostly stole from Holligay, because I have no creativity this year). Please read them carefully! I’ll toss pitches that break any of these, and I’d rather your hard work not go to waste.
Pitch Me is open for your submissions from RIGHT NOW (22 December) through the very last day of this hellyear (31 December) at 11:59pm MT.
The thing you pitch must have come from what was nominated for THE GIFTENING 2020. (Full list of those nominations in every category below the cut on this post.)
Entries must be unsigned! I’m looking to chose based on the pitch alone, regardless of who submitted it.
The pitch itself must be 100 words or less. HAVE PITY ON ME I CAN ONLY CONSUME SO MUCH.
If you’d like to get some help, ideas, feedback, all that good stuff, the Discord is a FANTASTIC resource I encourage you to use.
HERE IS YOUR PITCH SUBMISSION LINK
And, as promised, below the cut you’ll find the list of all the nominees in every category you guys sent in this year. IT’S A LONG LIST HAVE FUN WITH THAT

100% forgot to post these on Tumblr on the correct dates-- so.. here they are.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nov 4-6 - Aria is one of the royal twins of Corelea. The only child that lived most of her life in the castle controlled by her father, where he cares less if she is around..
Nov 7-9 - Darien is the most admired Knight of two Kingdoms due to his looks, skills, and humanity. One of his major flaws would be his dedicated love for Raven.
Nov 10-12 - Valent is often 'vain' to his popularity, he is also headstrong but gets the job done if needed. He is the younger brother of Rexus.
Nov 13-15 - Inflicted with amnesia, Raven became a carefree spirit in the Obelus Guild. Partnered with Rexus, the two find themselves involved a journey, they never asked for.
Nov 16-18 - Rexus has been cursed into a beastly griffin. He takes the cowardly side but would always tries to be the best he can to Raven. He is the older brother of Valent.
Nov 19-21 - Claude is the strong silent type and can be a reliable ally if others did not fear him. He is clever and is better with archery than sword-fighting.
Nov 22-24 - Liam was cursed into blindness when he was young, he mastered his skills using his other senses. Liam guards and is a close friend to Tiberius.
Nov 25-27 - Ethan is a little cheeky to fend off his peers that look down on him, which lead him to lacking confidence when given leadership duties. He prefers to garden plants and adores his non-blood brother, Darien.

21st May 2020 - Kodaly
Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967)
Psalmus Hungaricus (1923)
 https://open.spotify.com/album/1N6yi3wFIMov52xnxsOUGs?si=rTeeZWiaQDqbpk8eTrApzA Tracks 1-3
‘K’ is a letter I have been excited about doing this project. There’s a few ‘K’ composers that I know have written good music, but I don’t know very well. Kodaly is one of those (Khachaturian & Kabalevsky being some others.) I programmed Kodaly’s Concert for Orchestra during my year as president of my university symphony orchestra but I’d only heard it because it came on an album from Oxfam with Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. It went down well, and I loved playing it, but I don’t know much other Kodaly. Given the honker of a vocal piece yesterday, I’ve chosen the Psalmus Hungaricus in the hope that I can review some good vocal music on this journey.
Tumblr media
Above - What this album artwork designed by one of the Hungarian Radio Children’s Choir? I hope so.
1. Mikoron David Nagy Busultaban – yeah that’s right, you heard. The opening is already dramatic and exciting. I want to hear the rest of this piece already, by the first few bars. Some woodwind solos then are interspersed with the major chord from the opening, which is a great effect. When the choir comes in, it’s amazing. So quiet and controlled, chant like (as you might expect from a religious choral work perhaps). The orchestra then return with a call-and-response type picture, leading into the first tenor solo. I mean, what’s immediately obvious is that Hungarian isn’t the nicest sounding language to sing in. The tenor sounds great though, and the accompaniment remains purposeful underneath, weighted towards the lower end of the orchestra. Another orchestral tutti flourish before some more tenor solo, now quite brooding. I think the passage between 4:21 and 4:26 shows Kkodaly’s skill as a composer, it’s 5 seconds of music, but there’s so much in that 5 seconds. It would have been so easy to put a few notes of orchestral filler in that few seconds, but this is brilliant. The next tenor passage is more intense. Then, the choir return, not so quiet this time. I struggle to hear the men here, which is a shame, but the orchestral part is arguably more interesting anyway. At 5:28, the staggered entries in the orchestral parts are really cool, and carry on to underpin the tenor solo again. We’re only halfway in and so much has happened!
6:30 is a climax, with the tenor really going for it with wordless women underneath. Oh wow 6:48 is amazing. Choir and orchestra really going for it and then ay 7:05 the orchestra drop out completely, and the choir diminuendo whilst retaining their rich sound. I love it. 7:40 sound like the end of the movement, but then there’s a beautiful wind and horn section to tell us that it’s not. As a rule, I prefer the choral sound to vocal soloists, and I think this is the case here. The tenor’s great, no doubt about it, but I’m more interested in what else is going on. Like the solo clarinet for example. 10:10 comes straight from Italian opera, but then is followed by the orchestra ramping up in dynamic and tempo. From 10:40 when we’re at full force again, it sounds amazing. The passing of the melody between the choir and tenor is a bit corny sadly. The end is triumphant, but also uneasy as it doesn’t sounds resolved. I think it’s going to attaca into the next movement and I’m excited for what comes next.
Tumblr media
Above - this comes up when your search for Psalmus Hungaricus on google. I don’t know what it is, but I like it.
2. Te Azert Lelkem – immediately we’re in a magical fairy world. The harp is loud enough, which is a rare thing to behold! Feel reminiscent of Daphnis et Chloe, but a bit more dissonant. It’s a complete change from the first movement, and great to hear. Contrast with good musical basis rather than just for the sake of it. Then around 1:45 there’s high winds over trombones glissing between chords. It’s a texture I’ve heard before (I want to say in Holst, although maybe more Ravel) but it fits well here. The Tenor sings quite an operatic aria here. This could certainly be from an opera, and feels like it is rather than from a sacred work, but it’s great. In this setting, I think I do prefer the tenor soloist as opposed to full choir. The chord at 4:11 is angsty, and lasts for a full 12-13 seconds, unchanged apart from a diminuendo until the end of the movement.
3. Igaz Vagy Uram – Well that’s certainly a change of mood. Kodaly has a great ability in this piece to go from something sounding really scary, to quite lovely in a very short space of time. The musicians do a great job interpreting this as well. From 0:44, the choir build, and introduce what may be a children’s choir, there’s a loud, full drone in the background I assume on the organ, and the effect is great. There’s quite an abrupt pause at 1:47, and the silence lasts a full 6 seconds, which feels like a long time. Then the choir come in again with an atmospheric plainsong-like passage, barely accompanied. 2:53 is a great moment, which then dies away fairly rapidly. I like this piece very much, but the mood changes quite quickly, and what I praised Kodaly for before is now becoming unsatisfying. I want a longer period of something whether that be melancholic and delicate, or wild and triumphant. 4:22 is great, very chanty, subtle arco double bass adds a great texture to the lower voices. Although actually, it’s playing the top line down a few octaves, interesting. This is the sustained mood I was hoping for, I don’t usually like a quiet, composed ending, but this is so dramatic and effective. Great work Kodaly.
Overall – 9/10. Some amazing moments in this piece. I have listened 3-4 times already, which is not what I tend to do with this list, as often I’m ready to move on. I would love this to be programmed more, and it’s a shame it’s not better known. I think in terms of orchestration, Kodaly hits the nail on the head. My only criticism (hence not 10/10) is I feel a bit unsatisfied with the length of the different moods in the last movement. Otherwise, flawless.

Wrapped round Château Frontenac, this 200-years-old picket promenade connects the leafy historic battlefields to the Outdated Metropolis and options a number of noteworthy sights, together with Russian cannons captured by the British military throughout the Crimean Battle in addition to the unique fortifications of the Higher City.
Château Frontenac
Sitting predominantly atop Quebec’s higher city, Château Frontenac is the capital’s emblem and most visited attraction.
However regardless of its considerably contradictory title, it was by no means a fort; the Nationwide Historic Web site of Canada was truly constructed within the late 19th century as a part of the collection of “château” fashion motels for the Canadian Pacific Railway firm all through Canada.
Whereas the now-Fairmont-owned lodge not gives guided excursions, it’s attainable to step inside for a drink or a meal – try make-your-own negronis at 1608 or the opulent brunch at Champlain Restaurant.
Place Royale
Place Royale
Set foot within the cradle of French Canadian civilisation by visiting the very place the place Quebec Metropolis was based in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain after having opened the very first buying and selling submit.
The small sq. is awash with historical past and is flanked by distinctive New France structure.
Morrin Centre
Previously a jail, now Quebec Metropolis’s flagship English-language cultural hub, the Morrin Centre is a surprising 200-year previous constructing crammed with historical past and obscure inmate tales. It additionally encompasses a Victorian-era library containing 25,000 books, an old-timey chemistry lab, and is residence to Canada’s first discovered societies.
It’s even attainable to guide a conventional afternoon tea, full with interval costumes and Victorian etiquette classes.
Maison de la Littérature
Maison de la Littérature
And whilst you’re at it, jump over subsequent door to Maison de la Littérature, a very renovated constructing with a Scandinavian really feel to it and infinitely sturdy Instagram recreation. It’s completely devoted to Québécois creativity, with an apparent deal with literature.
Citadelle de Québec
As one among Canada’s most historically-significant locations, the Plains of Abraham are to not be missed. That is the place the French and the British armies fought on a number of events within the hope of protecting their respective grip on the North American continent, till the decisive 1759 conquest.
The Citadelle de Québec – the most important British-built fortress in North America – is an completely fascinating stronghold encompassing over 300 years of army historical past.
Petit-Champlain
As soon as a tiny riverside hamlet, now a thriving vacation spot, this touristy but extremely quaint a part of Outdated Quebec encompasses probably the most picturesque streets within the province; assume multi-centennial vibrant townhouses and cobblestone alleys amongst cosy bistros and theatres.
Beer is not any laughing matter on this province. Québécois take their brews very significantly, which is actually why there are such a lot of microbreweries all through Quebec Metropolis. These are my favorite:
Griendel (195 Saint-Vallier Ouest)
La Souche (801 Chemin de la Canardière)
La Barberie (310 Saint Roch Est)
La Korrigane (380 Dorchester)
Noctem (438 du Parvis)
Quartier des Arts
As it’s usually missed by vacationers in favour of extra common Petit-Champlain, this portion of Quebec Metropolis may be very genuine and retains a powerful native really feel. Listed below are just a few solutions on the place to begin:
Stroll the streets of Montcalm proper as much as the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Superb Arts Museum) and historic Plains of Abraham
Marvel on the English structure and bourgeois really feel of the neighbourhood. Stroll alongside Braves Avenue and see the mansions as soon as constructed to accommodate ambassadors from all over the world
Step on Cartier Road and benefit from the epicurean retailers, superb eating places, cinemas, and indoor meals markets

Ile d’Orléans
One of many few benefits Quebec Metropolis has over Montreal (what can I say, a lady’s gotta symbolize) is its quantity. Being of a extra modest measurement, the capital doesn’t take as lengthy to go to and is less complicated to navigate, very similar to its neighbouring points of interest.
Listed below are just a few concepts:
Regardless of its previous age and timeless points of interest, Quebec Metropolis nonetheless is aware of tips on how to throw a rattling good, generally-free-of-charge social gathering.
Whether or not you favor musical occasions (Pageant d’été de Québec, Envol et Macadam), historic festivities (Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France), artsy shows (Loto-Québec fireworks pageant) or if you happen to’re courageous sufficient, winter celebrations (Carnaval de Québec), there’s undoubtedly a pageant that can tickle your fancy on this full of life, cheerful city.
Observatoire de la Capitale
Take an elevator (thank God!) to the 31st flooring of the enduring Marie-Guyart constructing, which gives unobstructed, 360-degree views of not solely each the decrease and higher cities, but additionally the mighty St. Lawrence River and even the Laurentians Mountains on clear days.
I’ve made it abundantly clear that Quebec Metropolis is now blessed with a really dynamic, rapidly-evolving meals scene. I get so many emails from readers asking the place they need to have a Québécois dinner, or whether or not there’s a brunch place value getting up early for. Beneath, just a few of my favorite eating places in Quebec Metropolis:
The third-wave espresso retailers have reached Quebec Metropolis, for the enjoyment of those that can’t stand Tim Hortons (not all Canadians get pleasure from it, opposite to common perception). If you wish to have a high-quality, masterfully crafted cup of joe, you’ll have to pay a go to to the St-Roch space:
Meals tour

An actual deal with for Quebec Metropolis connoisseurs.

Should you time your go to proper, you would possibly even be capable of go to, higher but keep in a single day, on the world-famous Hôtel de Glace proper outdoors Quebec Metropolis.
The one one among its sort in all of North America, the Ice Resort encompasses 500 tonnes of ice and 30,000 tonnes of snow masking simply shy of three,000 sq. metres. There’s a bar, loads of rooms, a spa, and even a chapel!
The lodge is simply twenty minutes from the town centre by automotive or through the Outdated Québec Excursions shuttle.
Musée des Beaux-Arts
Whereas the museum as such has been round for some time, what guests really can not miss on their go to is the glowing new Lassonde wing.

For the park’s 30th Anniversary celebration, Disney announced the addition of a table service restaurant, Roundup Rodeo BBQ, in Toy Story Land and an array of Toy Story 4 pop-up merchandise locations.
The evening finished with the premiere of “Wonderful World of Animation”, the all-new projection show in Center Stage.  Projected onto the Chinese Theater, the show chronicles the journey through 90 years of Disney and Pixar animations and includes blasts from the past and rarely seen characters as well as new favorites and classic stories.  The show replaces the “Movie Magic” projection show, which you can find in SamsDisneydairy Episode #99 – The Wonderful World of Animation will lead to the always popular “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular”.

Manga the Week of 6/27/18
SEAN: 65 titles. Sixty. Five. Titles. Next. Week.
MICHELLE: Holy crap.
ANNA: Yikes.
ASH: That’s amazing.
SEAN: Ghost Ship has a 5th To-Love-Ru Darkness and a 2nd volume of Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs, thus continuing to be the “Shonen Jump Titles Too Hot For Viz” publisher.
J-Novel Club has the 6th volume of If It’s For My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord.
Kodansha’s got a lot. Print-wise we see some series we haven’t seen for a looooooong time. Air Gear (last seen one year ago) finally comes to an end with its 37th volume. L
Tumblr media
DK (last seen 10 months ago) has its 11th volume. And Missions of Love (last seen 13 months ago) has a 15th volume. This doesn’t seem to be “caught up with Japan”, so who knows why it’s been so long.
ASH: Oh, Missions of Love! I guess it has been a while, but I do find the series addictive.
SEAN: Other print volumes include a 4th Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, a 10th Fire Force, and theoretically the print debut of Tokyo Tarareba Girls, though this isn’t on Kodansha’s own site, so don’t be surprised if there’s a last minute date change.
ASH: I’m very excited for the print debut of Tokyo Tarareba Girls, so I hope there won’t be much of a delay if there is one. I’m still reading Clear Card, too, even though I think the original Cardcaptor Sakura is the stronger series at this point.
SEAN: On the digital front, there’s another debut with the wonderfully titled The Quintessential Quintuplets (Go-Toubun no Hanayome). It’s a Weekly Shonen Magazine series about a kid who has to tutor… well, you can probably guess. Expect comedy.
And there is Ace of the Diamond 12, Beauty Bunny 6, Liar x Liar 3, My Brother the Shut-In 6 (this is a final, I think), The Prince’s Black Poison 6, and Tsuredure Children 10.
MICHELLE: Someday I’ll read My Brother the Shut-In, but predictably, it’s Ace of the Diamond that I’m most excited about.
SEAN: Seven Seas rarely buries us in piles of titles in the same week. Next week is an exception. We’ve got the final Captive Hearts of Oz (Vol. 4), a 13tth volume of A Certain Scientific Railgun, the 2nd novel of Clockwork Planet in print (digital from J-Novel Club), a 3rd Devilman Grimoire, Freezing 21-22, Magika Swordsman and Summoner 9, Mononoke Sharing 2, My Monster Secret 11, Not Lives 9, and NTR – Netsuzou Trap 5.
ASH: It’ll be interesting to compare Devilman Grimoire to the classic Devilman manga now that that’s starting to be released in English, too.
SEAN: Not only that, but also several debuts! The big one is Claudine, the classic Riyoko Ikeda 70s shoujo manga. Complete in one short volume, it’s a fantastic read.
MICHELLE: I believe I detect a pick of the week contender!
MELINDA: Ooooooooh, yes, this.
ANNA: YAY!!!!
ASH: It’s one of my most anticipated releases of the year!
SEAN: Getter Robo Devolution is another take on the classic Getter Robo series. It runs in Bessatsu Shonen Champion, and is by the team responsible for the Ultraman manga.
If you like the How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord novel but wished you could see more of the fanservice, good news for you! Here’s the first volume of the manga adaptation.
If you love Monster Musume so much it drives you to create, then even better news – Monster Girl Papercrafts is coming out next week, presumably featuring designs from the ever-popular series.
ASH: Huh. I didn’t know this existed!
SEAN: And if you’re an old-school fan, enjoy a license that frankly no one was expecting. True Tenchi Muyo! is a series of three light novels that expand on the extended universe of the Tenchi OAVs that were so popular with your parents’ generation. (I know, shut up, Sean.) This first book focuses on Ayeka and Sasami’s parents.
On to Vertical. Speaking of novels, they have Hanamonogatari: Flower Tale. This is the 2nd book in the series not to be narrated by Koyomi Araragi. This story is narrated by Suruga Kanbaru, and has her dealing with a devil.
We have a 3rd omnibus of The Flowers of Evil as well.
Viz has a 4th digital release of The Emperor and I.
And the rest is Yen, but don’t even think that we’re done. Digitally we have a 6th Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, a 17th Corpse Princess, and a 7th IM: Great Priest Imhotep.
Yen On has two debuts this month, both spinoffs. If you like Sword Art Online but wish it didn’t star Kirito and were written by someone else, I have great news. Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a new spinoff series by the creator of Kino’s Journey, and focuses on original characters playing the game introduced in the 5th and 6th SAO books.
MELINDA: I wasn’t really interested until you said Kino’s Journey, and now I’m like… MUST HAVE.
ASH: That does add some promise!
SEAN: The other is Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon Familia Chronicle: Episode Lyu. This focuses on the elf with the tragic past we’ve seen in several books of the main series.
Speaking of DanMachi, we also have a 6th volume of the Sword Oratoria spinoff novel that looks at Loki’s group.
And there’s also a 14th Accel World, an 8th Irregular at Magic High School, a 4th volume of The Isolator, and a 7th Re: Zero, which should be a whale of a time. (I’m sorry.)
Yen Press also has several debuts this month. Caterpillar Girl and Bad Texter Boy (Imomushi Shoujo to Komyushou Danshi) is complete in one volume, and stars a boy who has trouble communicating and the girl he rejected, who is now a caterpillar. I must admit, I want to know more.
MICHELLE: That is quite the concept.
ANNA: Hmmmm.
ASH: My curiosity is piqued.
SEAN: Hatsu*Haru is a long-running shoujo title from Shogakukan’s BetsuComi, about a popular boy who finds himself falling for someone for the first time. Anna should be very interested, I expect.
MICHELLE: My ears always perk up when Yen Press releases some shoujo.
MELINDA: I’m interested too, I think.
ANNA: A shoujo manga about popular boy falling for someone for the first time????????!!!!!!!!!!!!
SEAN: Little Witch Academia is best known for its popular anime. Yen has licensed the manga, which runs in Shonen Ace. This is being marketed as part of the children’s line, but should also definitely appeal to manga fans.
Shibuya Goldfish is a pure horror title from Square Enix’s Gangan Joker. If you think the world being eaten by goldfish is a silly premise, this book will soon set you straight. It looks creepy as hell.
MELINDA: Wow.
ASH: That’s right up there with some of Junji Ito’s concepts; I guess we’ll see if it’s executed as well!
SEAN: The Strange Creature at Kuroyuri Apartments (Kuroyuri-sou no Henna Wikimono) is also supernatural, but this falls more into the pure comedy end. A demon needs life experience. A young landlord needs to not be bored. Can they get along?
Stupid Love Comedy (Rabukome no Baka) is an omnibus collecting all three volumes of this shoujo series from Kodansha’s Aria. It’s a reverse harem series, this time starring a manga writer.
MICHELLE: Hm.
ANNA: I sure do enjoy reverse harem.
SEAN: Think we’re done? There’s also ongoing Yen titles! On the ‘spinoff of light novel’ front, we see only two contenders next week: Goblin Slayer’s 3rd manga volume and Kagerou Daze’s 10th.
But there is also Aoharu x Machinegun 11, As Miss Beelzebub Likes 2, Big Order 5, BTOOOM! 21, Bungo Stray Dogs 7, The Elder Sister-Like One 2, Horimiya 11, Mermaid Boys 2, Monster Tamer Girls 2 (final volume there), One Week Friends 3, Prison School 10, Silver Spoon 3, Smokin’ Parade 4, A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School 3, Though You May Burn to Ash 2, and Today’s Cerberus 9.
MICHELLE: Yay for Horimiya and Silver Spoon!
MELINDA: Silver Spoon! Silver Spoon!
ANNA: Wooo!!!!
ASH: I’m following quite a few of these series, but Silver Spoon is the one that I’m most looking forward to reading this time around!
SEAN: Assuming you haven’t aged to death after reading all that, are there any titles you’re getting? One? Two? Twenty-five?
ASH: I’m afraid to count.

The Nongambler's Guide to Las Vegas
If you plan to take a pass on the glitzy casinos on your next trip to Las Vegas, you’ll have plenty of company. Splashy shows, upscale shopping and restaurants owned by celebrity chefs are just a few of the attractions displacing casinos as the big draws on the Strip. In 2016, 52% of Vegas visitors said vacation or pleasure was the primary purpose of their trip, and only 4% named gambling, according to a survey by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. “As gaming expands in other parts of the country, it’s not a novelty to play the slot machines or blackjack anymore,” says David G. Schwartz, director of the Center for Gaming Research at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

At the same time, downtown Vegas is emerging as a destination for local art, offbeat attractions and diverse cuisine. Plus, Vegas is only a few hours’ drive from several national parks and natural wonders, including Red Rock Canyon and the Grand Canyon. In other words, there are more — and probably more-rewarding — ways to spend your money in Vegas than placing bets at the craps table.
Kiplinger’s sent a couple of reporters to Las Vegas to see what’s afoot for visitors who have little or no interest in gambling. We discovered that you can enjoy the Strip no matter your budget, escape to museums and restaurants in the revitalizing downtown and avoid the crowds, or explore the beauty of the surrounding desert. If you’re determined to try your luck in the casinos, we offer some tips.
Living large on the Strip
Because my reputation as a gambler and a gamer is well known among my Kiplinger’s colleagues, my editors assigned me to be a sort of Vegas sherpa for this story — someone who knows his way around town, even if I had never seen much reason to abandon the outdoor pool or the free drinks at the craps table. My partner in crime, Miriam Cross, who covers the travel beat, was the perfect foil because she was more interested in soaking up the sights than soaking in the hotel hot tub. (However, it helped that I used my casino membership to book a free stay.)
The Strip offers no shortage of sights, shows and sensations — with plenty of ways to spend a small fortune. First, the restaurants: The eponymous Joel Robuchon at the MGM Grand features French cuisine from the chef whose restaurants have more than 30 Michelin stars among them. The nine-course, 17-dish tasting menu will run you $445 per person and includes the likes of langoustine ravioli in foie gras sauce and flan made from sea urchin. (Our limited expense account didn’t allow us to sample the food personally.) Elsewhere on the Strip, you’ll find offerings from such world-renowned chefs as José Andrés, Tom Colicchio and David Chang.
Feeling sporty? Book a tee time at Shadow Creek. A round of 18 holes at the course that’s ranked 16th on Golf magazine’s list of the 100 best public courses will have you chipping out of pine forests onto lush fairways in the middle of the desert (but will set you back $500). If golf isn’t your thing, splurge on shopping and a day at the spa. Start at Crystals, a 500,000-square-foot shopping and dining district in the Aria resort, where you can browse the high-priced merchandise at Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Prada, as well as Tom Ford, Stella McCartney and Lanvin. The on-site concierge at Crystals (call 702-590-9230) can help you book personal shopping sessions and after-hours appointments.
Across the street is the Sahra Spa & Hammam at the Cosmopolitan hotel. The full-service “Moroccan Journey” experience in the spa’s luxurious Turkish baths costs $450 for a 130-minute exfoliating and cleansing with a full-body massage. Or you can rent the spa penthouse suite, which comes with a living and entertaining area with a TV and a wet bar, private spa accommodations, and butler service. Rates start at $95 per hour, with a minimum of $500 spent on spa or salon services.
But you don’t have to spend like Ivanka Trump to do the Strip. Art buffs will roll their eyes at the faux Bernini sculptures at Caesars Palace, but they’re just a few doors down from exhibits that wouldn’t be out of place in the Guggenheim. James Turrell’s breathtaking light installation Akhob is in the back of the Louis Vuitton store (free, but call 702-730-3150 for reservations at least a month in advance). Rotating exhibitions at the Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art recently included paintings by Picasso and the photography of Yousuf Karsh. The current exhibition, I Am the Greatest, which runs through September 30, was well worth the $18 admission — at least it was for this avid sports fan. The collection documents the life of Muhammad Ali through art, artifacts and rare film footage.
Spectacles and thrills. If you’re looking for spectacle, start with the free fountain shows at the Bellagio and the Mirage. Illuminated jets of water rocket skyward at the Bellagio every half-hour during the day and every 15 minutes in the evening, with changing music and choreography. A percussion soundtrack composed by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart accompanies the show at the Mirage, which features an assortment of flamethrowers who sit in a fountain beneath a roaring “volcano.”
Las Vegas ballrooms have played host to world-class performers since the Rat Pack era, and the Strip still boasts a diverse lineup of shows — Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Donny and Marie Osmond, and, of course, Wayne Newton, with new artists blowing through town every month. You can catch one of six Cirque du Soleil shows on the Strip, or enjoy the magic of Penn & Teller or Criss Angel. For tickets, head to Vegas.com/shows. If you’re shopping for last-minute tickets, compare box office prices with those at one of the 10 Tix4Tonight booths that dot Las Vegas Boulevard.
Vegas has plenty of options for thrill-seekers, too. For example, you can test your mettle driving a high-performance car on a 1.2-mile, 10-turn racetrack with Dream Racing at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The basic package (five laps) in a Ferrari 430 GT will run you $550. Vegas Indoor Skydiving, located just off Las Vegas Boulevard, allows would-be skydivers to experience the thrill of freefall without, you know, jumping out of a plane. Divers don flight suits and hover over a giant wind tunnel. Tickets start at $75. The more daring can try the SkyJump at the Stratosphere, an 855-foot “controlled freefall” from the hotel’s 108th floor. Rides cost $120. —Ryan Ermey

Off the Strip
As Kiplinger’s travel writer and, on my own time, a budget-conscious traveler, I can’t understand why anyone would spend their vacation cooped up in a casino or shopping mall, dropping wads of cash that could be spent instead on new sights and experiences. (Prior to Vegas, my one casino experience involved winning $24 Australian at the slot machines in Melbourne and then calling it a night.) So after a couple of hours of wandering the maze of hotel lobbies on the Strip, I was bored.
Just a few miles north of the Strip, downtown Vegas (as well as nearby neighborhoods) promises a more authentic and less crowded experience. To start, there are a number of museums where you can learn about Las Vegas’s strange and seedy history. The Mob Museum ($20.95 in advance online) weaves together the rise of the mob in the U.S. with its presence in Las Vegas through interactive exhibits and delightfully grisly artifacts (including part of the bullet-ridden St. Valentine’s Day Massacre wall, where seven gangsters were shot). Ryan joined a tour of the Neon Museum ($19 by day, $26 at night), where an enthusiastic guide led his group through the outdoor “boneyard” of vintage Vegas signs, explaining the rich histories of the places where they had once hung.
We didn’t have time to visit the National Atomic Testing Museum, which traces the history of nuclear testing in the Nevada desert ($22), the Las Vegas Natural History Museum ($10) or the Pinball Hall of Fame — not a museum per se, but a collection of restored pinball machines that you can play for as little as 25 cents each.

The burgeoning arts scene downtown is visible in empty blocks and parking lots enlivened with colorful murals that are left over from previous Life Is Beautiful festivals. Now in its fifth year, the festival features musical acts, comedy, art and more. We arrived too late in the day to see much activity at the Arts Factory, a collection of artists’ studios in the 18b Las Vegas Arts District. (The name refers to the 18 blocks that make up the neighborhood.) But as the chatty staffer at Jana’s RedRoom gallery explained, the area is hopping on the first Friday of every month, when food trucks line up and street performers entertain attendees who wander the galleries until late at night. (The preceding Thursdays, known as Preview Thursdays, are aimed at collectors and offer a more low-key opportunity to mingle with the artists.)
Fremont Street East (not to be confused with the kitschy Fremont Street Experience pedestrian mall) and surrounding blocks are sprinkled with restaurants and bars, including Le Thai, where we sampled curries in the backyard patio ($9.95 for a meal and drink during lunch). At the Downtown Container Park, a collection of restaurants and boutiques housed in shipping containers, we chowed down on delicious burgers and fries at the Perch (entrées start at $13). The airy second-story restaurant overlooks a performance stage and “treehouse” with a 33-foot-tall slide snaking out of the side. No matter where you eat, leave room for the artistic desserts at Sweets Raku ($12 each). We devoured a white chocolate cup stuffed with pie crust and strawberry mousse, with a sorbet-filled strawberry candy on the side.
Also on tap in Vegas: You can tour the headquarters of online shoe retailer Zappos ($10), which includes play time in the ball pit and testing your problem-solving skills on a mock customer-service call. (Zappos runs several other tours, including one that focuses on downtown hot spots.) Or you can amble among the remains of the city’s first permanent, nonnative settlement at the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort ($1), tucked among nondescript streets. Beyond that is Springs Preserve, a 180-acre space with miles of walking trails, a desert tortoise refuge, botanical gardens, archaeological sites and museums. Admission is $18.95.
Leaving Las Vegas. The craggy peaks that ring the city hint at the dramatic landscapes that lie beyond. We chose Red Rock Canyon, a half-hour drive from the Strip, for a morning escape ($7 per vehicle). You can take it easy, as we did, by cruising the 13-mile scenic loop through the conservation area, parking at lookout points to take in looming clusters of rock. Or you can stop to hike on one of the many trails or climb the sandstone outcroppings. On our way back to Las Vegas, we stopped by Spring Mountain Ranch, a surprisingly lush property once owned (but never lived in) by Howard Hughes ($9). We skipped the nearby Bonnie Springs Ranch, but kids might enjoy the re-created Old West town, complete with cowboys and saloon, as well as a petting zoo.
If you want to delve deeper into the natural wonders around Vegas, head to the Valley of Fire State Park ($10 per vehicle), an hour away from the city, for ancient stone etchings and spectacular rock formations. Escape intense summer heat by hiking Mount Charleston, which is consistently cooler than the city, or splashing around in Lake Mead, a large reservoir on the Colorado River where you can boat, swim and fish, or explore the remnants of an old town that has reappeared as water levels in Lake Mead recede.
Hoover Dam offers tours of the power plant and passageways within the dam. Death Valley and Zion National Park are less than three hours away from Vegas. Getting to the visitor’s center of the Grand Canyon takes more than four hours by car, but helicopter and bus tours from Vegas can take you there and back in a day. —Miriam Cross
When to Go
Las Vegas doesn’t have a “slow” season because conventions and events take place all year. The weather is nicest in the spring and fall, when days are hot (but not blistering) and nights are cool but comfortable. If you’re trying to reduce costs, keep these points in mind:
Airfares. Flights to Vegas are cheapest in January, when the median round-trip airfare is $205, according to data from Kayak. You can typically find the lowest price when booking two months out.
Hotels. The lowest hotel rates appear in November and December, with a median price of $123 per night, according to Kayak. You may see rooms going for less than $100 a night on travel-booking sites, but resort fees can run up to $40 per night, says Christine Sarkis, of SmarterTravel.com. Many out-of-the-way hotels offer free shuttles to the Strip.

We saved money on our accommodations, thanks to Ryan’s Total Rewards membership, which covers casinos and resorts including Caesars Palace, Harrah’s and the Linq. Members at all status levels receive offers for free or discounted hotel stays. Ryan found a comped room at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino for himself and snagged me a rate of $35.50 per night. But we couldn’t escape the $34-per-night resort fee. —Miriam Cross

As I was considering the title of this post, the term “settling in” was one of the first things that came to mind. It’s what us English teachers call a phrasal verb: the combination of a specific verb and preposition in order to express a unique idea. It literally means to become familiar with somewhere new, such as a house, and to feel comfortable and happy there. (Cambridge Dictionary)
I suppose I’ve been settling in these past few weeks; almost one month to the day now. I still pinch myself sometimes as I look around me to be sure this is all real. This may not be the most beautiful house in the world or the greatest place on Earth, but it’s my dream. For so long I fantasized about living in an old cascina, or farmhouse, in Italy, surrounded by flowers and forests and mountains, and here I am. I simply cannot contain how excited I am to start this new chapter in my life.
As a kid I was fortunate enough to grow up with not only a backyard, but a whole backwoods to myself. And I thought that’s what life was: running around in the woods until dark (with some school in between). I’ve spent the last ten years living in apartments around Italy and I have to say it’s been pretty awesome. City life is grand; it’s electric; it’s coffee shops and bars and boutiques and all your favorite people in one place. But I’ve felt a change growing inside me this past year. I realized that I wanted the woods again. I wanted rustling leaves and towering pines and annoying forest animals that mess up your front lawn. I wanted bird’s nests and muddy boots and a hammock tied between two trees. Most people told me “oh, that’s an American ideal. You can’t find that here in Italy.”
Home sweet home.
Well, if I believe in anything it’s this: if you desire a dream strongly enough and put all you energy into it, you will make it a reality. Visualization is real. Just look. The dream has become a reality, but now I’m left with the task of managing that reality.
First there was the matter of unpacking boxes and finding a home for things, which I found cannot be done in a day. It takes time for some objects to find their place. Maybe a rug that was perfect in the old bedroom doesn’t really work in the new one; framed photos need to find new nooks and corners to be placed in. I don’t think one can just make a nook out of nothing. It needs time to grow. So this house and I have been doing just that over the past 30 days. We’ve been getting to know each other. It has it’s history and I have mine. During one of our first walks in the surrounding woods, my husband and I joked that this would be the perfect start to a great horror movie.
Young, happy newlyweds move into old house in the woods.
Strange, unexplainable things start to happen.
They end up killing one another.
It’s our nervous little joke. I have to admit that I was a little scared my first night here alone. Those big beautiful pines can seem ominous and a bit terrifying in the darkness of night. Every creak and squeak made my heart pound, and I felt ridiculous for it. A few days ago Davide was away on business, again, and I decided to face this stupid fear. The sun had already set, but the driveway lights were on, so I put on my jacket and walked out into the night. Walking down the path surrounded by blackness was only scary at first, because after a minute, after my eyes had adjusted, I realized that the forest had its own beauty about it even at night. The stars shone bright and cool, dark air swirled around me, and I understood that there was nothing to fear out here.

The days are slowly getting a little longer and the nights a little warmer. Piano piano, this house is starting to feel like home, but I still need time. Until then, candles have that magical ability to make any place cozy.
I’m still getting used to the changes. The house is twice as big as the last one, some I spend twice the amount of time cleaning (cat hair, every where). I hate carrying my phone around with me every time I change rooms, so often I’m running upstairs or downstairs to answer a call or a text. In the living room, but need my wallet? Have to go upstairs to get it from my purse. In bed, but want a glass of water? Have to go downstairs. Bathroom? Upstairs. Tennis shoes? In the storage room out next to the garage. I know, these are petty first-world problems, but they are the subtle, unexpected changes in my day-to-day life that have made settling in just a little bit more complicated.
And it’s not just the house that’s taking some getting used to; there’s the garden, too. I’ve never been a gardener, and neither was my mother, but both my grandmothers had amazing blooms growing around the property, so I’d like to think I’ve got a green thumb somewhere in there just waiting to come out. I began by simply pulling up some weeds and ended up unearthing a forgotten stone patio that had been completely covered by grass and moss.
It took me more than a week of back-breaking work on my hands and knees, but I’m searching for the right words to convey the satisfaction and primitive joy I felt after spending hours just digging my hands into the earth. These stones are more than just history; it’s the primordial ritual of turning over new dirt and setting down one’s roots. This is my way of saying “Here I am. This is home.” The old house, the big forest, the rose bushes half-eaten by wild deer: I am theirs now just as much as they are mine. We’re all living together now in this little ecosystem. I find myself listening to music a little less than I used to, just because I don’t want to disturb the sacred silence in this blessed place.
THE FRONT MEADOW.
The art of slow living.
I look from the upstairs window at the stones I liberated from the ground. Haphazardly placed together like a jigsaw puzzle, they form a circle, and I’m constantly asking myself where that circle came from. What does it mean? Who made it? Why was it forgotten? I think the circle is symbolic. It symbolizes the journey I’m making, that we’re all making perhaps; this path that leads us out and around and then back to where we started, here in the woods. And if we’re not careful, weeds will begin to grow over and we’ll end up losing sight of the big picture. Well, what was once just a stray stone under a lump of grass is now complete, and I plan on having many happy memories inside that hallowed ring for years to come, if I’m lucky.
Actually, we’ve already made a few, celebrating Easter with family and Labour Day weekend with friends. Eating until our stomachs hurt, drinking until our heads spun, and laughing into the night. Good memories are made of this. I’m beginning to feel comfortable and happy here, so I suppose that means I’m settling in.

I get way too much happiness from good food.
#gallery-0-24 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-24 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

I’m so grateful for this beautiful life.
Can I just stay here forever?
Settling In As I was considering the title of this post, the term “settling in” was one of the first things that came to mind.

20+ Amazing Things To Do In Quebec City [Summer 2019]
As the official capital of the province of Quebec and one of many oldest settlements in North America, Quebec Metropolis requires little or no presentation.
In actual fact, I get a number of emails about guests planning a day journey to Quebec Metropolis from Montreal – however each time, my reply is similar: keep in a single day. Not solely are the prepare and bus schedules relatively restrictive for day journeys, however the metropolis is simply magical after dusk and really deserves much more than a rushed, quick-let’s-move-on-to-the-next-place few hours.

Dufferin Terrace
Take a breath of contemporary air within the luxuriant Jardin Jeanne d’Arc
Meals tour
Should you’re really a foodie, then this second meals tour of Quebec Metropolis will certainly be up your alley. Specializing in the up-and-coming St-Roch, which is vastly completely different from Outdated Quebec, this Quebec Metropolis meals tour tackles six of one of the best eateries whereas acknowledging the historic sights and up to date developments alongside the best way. An actual deal with for Quebec Metropolis connoisseurs.
localfoodtours.com
Extremely trendy and extremely interactive, it hosts an considerable assortment of greater than 38,000 works surveying the historical past of Québec artwork focusing particularly on modern items.
