underwing challenge - day three
Who is your main cast? Describe as many of your OCs as you can cram into one post.
time to meet the gang from a kingdom betrayed!! (both helen and cory have actual intro posts which i'll link lol,, i still need to finish the others)
MAIN CHARACTERS
Sir Helen Mast: [she/her | 24 years old | asexual lesbian]
Helen is the narrator! She's been a knight for six years now (she became a squire when she was 12, and was knighted when she was 18) and has been employed at the palace for three years! Helen's parents died when she was very little (their town was raided) and she was raised by her father's best friend. She's loyal, protective and hard working BUT tends to have a very black and white way of thinking and has some issues letting others take charge in a situation. She has a Shire horse named Whiskey! He was a gift from her foster father when she was knighted
Cordelia "Cory" Langston: [she/her | 25 years old | bisexual]
Cory is a gardener at the palace and Helen's best friend! Cory's mother worked at the palace, so she and her brother grew up in the palace! Cory's brother moved out when he turned eighteen to move in with his then boyfriend (and later husband) but Cory stayed with her mother. She started working under the head gardener when she was 14 and fell in love with the job! Cory is optimistic, outgoing and knows a lot about nature. But she tends to be impatient, stubborn and blunt. Cory also has the tendency to adopt any animal that crosses her path, especially if they're injured.
Moss Pennbrook: [they/them | 24 years old | nonbinary bisexual]
Moss is our resident bard! Their parents were apart of a traveling theatre troupe, so Moss was pretty much destined to be a theater kid. They grow up traveling all over the kingdom, which Moss loves because they get to see so many different places!! They strike off on their own when they're 20, and continue to travel. Moss ends up helping Helen and Cory out of trouble, and asks to join their quest because they want to go on an adventure!! Moss is smart, good in a fight and witty. However, they tend to jump headfirst into situations without bothering to think about the consequences (what do you MEAN there are consequences for your actions??) Moss can play several instruments, but their favorite is the violin :)
Tabitha "Tabby" Fairburn: [she/her | 27 years old | trans lesbian]
Tabby is the seventh daughter of a seventh daughter, and a very powerful witch! She lives with her mother and several of her sisters in a cottage near the outskirts of the kingdom. She's the official "protector" of her town, having taken over after the last protector disappeared into the mountains. Tabby's passionate, quick thinking and protective of her friends/family. She's also very good at improvising, and uses her magic in very creative ways to get out of trouble. She has trouble trusting newcomers; as the town's protector she's always on alert for potential attacks. Her familiar is a ferret named Felix! Tabby found him in town when she was younger and they've been inseparable ever since :)
SIDE CHARACTERS (that are still important to the plot)
Emory Warren: [she/they | 22 years old | trans fem nonbinary asexual]
Emory is also a knight at the palace! She's pretty new and has only been working for a year or so. They were recruited to the palace guard around the same times as Helen, and the two became quick friends. Emory is promoted to the prince's personal guard halfway through the novel, as the old guard was pretty much all killed in the attack which is a huge promotion for her! They become an important player in the second half of the book. Emory is a very positive person, and is usually very cheerful. They're also pretty good at healing. Their mother was a nurse, and taught Emory everything she could. Emory has some trouble fighting with weapons; she's far more skilled at hand-to-hand combat. Emory ends up teaching Levi how to fight, because he desperately needs lessons.
Prince Levi Sherridan: [he/him | 17 years old | gay]
Levi is the only son of the king and heir to the throne! He's attacked at the very beginning of the novel, and it's this attack that kicks off the events of the novel! He becomes an important player in the second half of the book. A lot of his time is taken up by learning everything he can about being king (all about the justice system, the economic status of the kingdom, how to work with other countries, etc) but Levi tries to take time to actually visit the different towns in the kingdom so he can see for himself what's going on. He's soft spoken and genuinely tries to be the best ruler he can. He's book smart, but that's pretty much it. He has no clue how to hold his own in a fight, but he still has time to learn :)
#underwing challenge#underwing challenge day 3#wip: akb#my ocs#levi and emory were supposed to be background characters#but as soon as i started writing they suddenly became much more important jvfbhfv#i love them both so much#i also realize i didn't really describe what they physically look like??#i have picrews for the main four if anyone is interested#tbh all you need to know is that both helen and emory are short#cory makes fun of helen all the time#even tho cory is only like two inches taller#also tabby holds all the brain cells in the group

Woman flees court as fiancee jailed after stabbing homophobic woman
A heavily pregnant bride-to-be left a court in tears as her fiancee was jailed for five years for repeatedly stabbing a ‘homophobic’ woman with a pen knife after she allegedly yelled ‘ugly dyke’.
Jade Madden, 21, who had only just come out as gay, was with 22-year old partner Megan Madden when they got caught up in a fight with two other women over comments made towards them near Manchester’s gay village.
During the assault, Jade, who claimed she had been targeted with the homophobic slur, grabbed Adele Riley by the hair before teetotal Megan, who works a bouncer, delivered repeated strikes to the victim’s face and neck with a pen knife.
Jade Madden, 21, (left, outside court yesterday) was with 22-year old partner Megan Madden (who she is with on the right – Jade is on the left of that photo) when they got caught up in a fight
Mother-of-two Ms Riley, 30, who had earlier been ejected from a bar, suffered two superficial injuries and three wounds to her head which are feared to have left her scarred for life.
In a statement, the victim said the trauma of the attack on January 1 last year had left her unable to walk home from work on her own or go into Manchester city centre.
At Manchester Crown Court Megan, of Old Trafford, was jailed for five years and ten months after she admitted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and having a bladed article.
Jade, from Fallowfield, sobbed as she walked free with six weeks jail suspended for a year after admitting using threatening behaviour. She is due to give birth in two months.
The incident occurred after the couple encountered Miss Riley on Portland Street in the city centre during New Year celebrations. The victim had been in Bar Rogue but was thrown out after a confrontation with Shannon Smith, a friend of the Maddens.
Alexandra Sutton prosecuting said: ‘The confrontation on the street continued with Smith arguing with Miss Riley’s cousin who then punched Miss Smith.
‘Miss Riley intervened but she was clearly agitated and was shouting and gesticulating.
‘Whatever was said clearly angered the Maddens and they were immediately involved in a scuffle grappling with one another.’
Jade, (pic) who claimed she had been targeted with the homophobic slur, grabbed Adele Riley by the hair before Megan, who works a bouncer, delivered repeated strikes to the victim’s face and neck with a pen knife
Jade then went over to Ms Riley and pulled her hair before holding her as Megan hit her, the prosecutor said.
She continued: ‘The evidence is Megan pulled out a knife, possibly a pen knife and there were two bursts of stabbing.
‘Shannon Smith was also seen delivering two blows to Miss Riley. Megan then strikes a further blow to Miss Madden and then puts an implement into her pocket.
‘The three then got into a taxi to flee the scene.’
The court heard the couple were traced via Facebook.
In mitigation for Megan, defence lawyer Dan Gaskell said: ‘She is clearly an intelligent young woman who has acted entirely out of character this particular night – a serious one off that is going to have significant consequences for her and her partner and their child.
‘She became involved because her partner was involved in a fight with another woman.
‘Her subsequent actions were entirely despicable and she has had many months to reflect upon that.’
For Jade, defence lawyer Philip Mahoney said: ‘The victim can be seen shouting and gesticulating towards Jade Madden calling her an ugly dyke.
‘This is a young lady that has never been in trouble before and she is pregnant due to give birth in a month or so.
‘Prior to the commencement of her relationship with Megan Madden she was in an abusive relationship with a male.
‘That relationship left marks on her in terms of her psychological wellbeing, she would flinch at sudden noises and excessively apologise to Megan.’
Mr Mahoney said Jade only came out a couple of months before the fight and was worried about how people would react.
‘She was the one who went over to the victim at that stage, she holds herself responsible for what occurred thereafter,’ he said.
‘The person who has been the most constant support for her has been Megan, and now her principle source of support is now going to be gone and Jade holds herself responsible for that.’
The judge said it was disturbing that Megan (seen on the left with Jade – but in the right of that photo – and on the right in a police mug shot) was carrying a knife and was prepared to use it
Sentencing Judge Alan Conrad QC said: ‘This was serious group violence at night, in public, on a crowded street.
‘The incident was taken to an altogether and more serious level by Megan Madden using that knife to stab the victim repeatedly to the head, face and neck causing wounds of which she is actively conscious of and causing her to be fearful of going out in public.
‘I accept that there was some provocation but you all continued to be involved none the less.’
Turning to Megan, the judge said it was disturbing she was carrying a blade and that she drew that in a violent situation.
‘The carrying of a knives are matters of great concern,’ he said. ‘You face for this a significant custodial sentence.
‘A stab wound to the neck can quite easily result in a fatal injury and you could have been spending at least 25 years in prison.’
Former trainee nursery nurse Shannon Smith, 24, of Moss Side, Manchester admitted a public order offence and was ordered to complete 100 hours unpaid work as part of a two year community order.
