Hey everyone, this is probably the last artwork before the year 2024 comes to an end. And, funnily enough, the first one I’m posting here on tumblr. But you can find all my stuff in my deviantart profile, if you feel like dropping by and having a look ;).
It was a good year, where I got back into drawing a bit more regularly (maybe not as much as I wanted or could have, but it was still better than all the years before) and I had a lot of fun doing it! Most of it was thanks to the inspiration provided by the 21draw course “Learn to Draw in 21 days”, by Mark Kistler. If you’re struggling with your art, feeling self conscious about it somehow, or just stuck in terms of creativity, I definitely recommend it!! That man is a well of positivity and encouragement!
So, without further ado, I give you my interpretation of the glaciers and penguins lesson from the course 21 draw - learn to draw in 21 days by Mark Kistler
Happy New Year everyone!!! Don't be afraid to take a leap of faith if that helps you reach your dreams and objectives 😉

This is my Guardian from Baldur’s Gate 3. I really love how her horns came out.
Tumblr media
I just finished my first class in 21Draw (Digital Drawing in Procreate for Beginners) and I’m so happy with how my drawing came out! 🥰 It’s the first time I’ve completed a drawing with this level of detail in such a short amount of time!

i keep seeing 21draw ads on insta and this dude is saying we won't believe how his new hobby (drawing) got him a raise at work and I wanna reach into the screen and shake him violently because what happened to having hobbies just because you enjoy them? What happened to having hobbies for hobbies sake? What happened to not monetizing every aspect of our lives?????

Learning Plan
The goal for this year is to strengthen my portfolio in commercial illustration, background art, and character design. I aim to define my artistic process by exploring and mastering different digital tools and media, participating in competitions, and connecting with industry professionals. This learning plan will focus on key areas such as skill development, techniques, and refining my creative process.
To enhance my skills, I plan to study online courses from platforms like 21Draw, Class101, and Skillshare. Some specific courses I have chosen include Neimy Kana’s Figure Drawing for daily practice and anatomical understanding, Isaac Jadraque’s Character Design Made Easy to refine my character development, and Kenneth Anderson’s Character-Driven Illustrations to improve my storytelling techniques. To deepen my understanding of light and shadow, I will study Aveline Stokart’s Mastering Light and Shadow and Maria Lia Malandrino’s Lighting and Shading: Make Your Art Shine!. Additionally, Simone Grunewald’s Digital Illustration with Procreate will introduce me to these subjects while strengthening my digital painting techniques.
For stylization and color theory, I will take Gummy’s Class101 course, Coloring Techniques to Create Your Own Unique Character and Art Style, which I see as a crucial step in developing a consistent rendering process and improving my character designs. I will also further my knowledge with Sarah Holiday’s Mastering Colour in Procreate and Yifat Fishman’s Exploring Landscapes: Travel-Inspired Gouache Paintings. Altogether, these courses will be a significant boost to my artistic growth and workflow.
In terms of process, I will experiment with various brush sets from the artists whose courses I am taking. These textural brushes for Procreate will help me develop a unique look for my work. While Procreate will be my primary software, I also plan to revisit traditional techniques like risograph and linocut, which I enjoyed working with in previous years.
I may have a couple of online friends who could be potential collaborators, but overall, I prefer working independently. My projects are personal and focused on my progress, so collaboration doesn’t feel essential. I once took on a commission for someone and didn’t enjoy the experience, so I don’t see myself pursuing that path.
Regarding industry progression, I plan to submit my work to competitions such as the Penguin Student Design Award, Macmillan Award for Illustration, and AOI World Illustration Awards. I also aim to create commercial work like prints and stickers for potential online sales. Additionally, if any interesting opportunities arise throughout the year, I will consider participating.
For research, I will use Pinterest for gathering references, Etsy and Gumroad to explore brush sets, YouTube for speed paints and tutorials, and various course websites to continuously improve my techniques.
I don’t anticipate any major challenges or the need for additional resources, as I have everything necessary at home to complete my coursework and projects without issue.
I hope this year will be productive and better than the last, allowing me to create a portfolio I can be proud of.

Squash And Stretch
Today I've been continuing my animation lessons in the fundamentals of animation, the lesson today covered 'Squash and Stretch'. The lessons I'm following are hosted on the 21Draw website and the course is run by Tom Bancroft. To learn these fundamentals, we used a ball again, though the same princple can be applied to character animation too. Here's a clip of the bouncing ball I did:
I also put these principles into practice by just drawing a character's face (not animated for now) using PhotoShop so I can see how this would work:
Tumblr media
This was the first time I've ever used PhotoShop and I have to say I struggled initially with the software. I didn't find it quite so intuitive to use as Procreate which is the software I've primarily used for all my art. I will continue my animation practice and also learn more about PhotoShop along side of it as this is industry standard software and I would like transferrable skills once I finish my Masters.

Penguins can fly!
*Quaaaaack????* - "Look, look! A flying penguin!" - "A what?" - "ohhhh....I wanna fly too!"
Turns out even penguins can fly. And the reaction of the onlookers diverge, but here you have it: a flying penguin. Hope he knows how to land safely 😁

The Dragon Beckons the Fish
Last month, I shared a pair of drawings; since I’m busy writing my Starling House review and don’t have the time to read or write my daily short story review, you get another pair of drawings! I continue to follow along with 21draw’s excellent lessons, taught by Mark Kistler. Oh no, I forgot to shade all the fingers!

Ta-Da! List: Friday - 11/17/2023
I have decided to take adhdjesse's advice and make a "Ta-Da! List" every day! I'm going to fill it out throughout the day, then remove the personal stuff. – Nov. 16, started the Beginner’s Guide to Graphic Design course on 21Draw – created today's Ta-Da! List Feature Image – made emails more manageable by unsubscribing from email lists – created the ending slide for WGS posts, inspired by…

Here's a website that I recommend if you are interested in art. It has a really competitive price and have a ton of interesting content related to art development.
This is not a sponsored post! hahaha
I made some of their courses and I really think it can help you with your own art. ;)
